Listen everyone, we have to stay dedicated after all these years, one day, one day he'll mention the fossil he chose to us and it'll be amazing when he does, I can't wait to know!
For Steven Stone, since this is Gen 3 you had access to Heart Scales, something you tend to rarely use in your challenges I feel! In this instance you could have relearned Iron Defense and I think completely trivialized the fight by setting up against the Skarmory, maybe this would even have been possible without extra levels! Some Heart Scales are easy to get too, like just hidden on the beach at Lilycove. Relearning moves is such a good thing that the later gens added that add some nice moveset variety, I'd like to see you try to use them to weave around different fights!
It's a good idea, but he doesn't know about those game mechanics, he's just realizing that rock-types aren't weak to ice-types, it's a neutral attack, the weird confusion of many of the 1st generation, believing that just because Onix, Rhydon, and Graveler are weak to Ice-types, they're also Ground-types. Now you ask this guy to go to the recall move, with a certain item, he doesn't know that.
MDB (bless his heart) really doesn't know a lot about these games. His post game fights usually consist of him overlevelling until his head breaks the brick wall, rather than coming up with a cool strategy. One example that comes to mind was his Kecleon (fairly sure it was that one) run in Emerald. He gave up after a couple tries of losing to Steven. Instead of taking another look at his learnset and coming up with a better strategy, he just gave up saying it wasn't going to happen. I loaded up my Emerald save, tried with a different move set and proceeded to clean up with ease. Again, love MDB, so I'm not hating by any means.
I love Mawile too. But as a kid when I first saw it, I was very confused by it. (I played Pokémon Ruby, when it came out). That's the reason I never used it bevore and so never saw the back sprite. But after finding out how Mawile actually looks like and it's backstory. It grew an me! :D (I think this was while I was playing Pokémon X)
Mawile! One of my favourite Pokemon, but also one of the crappiest in it's debut game. *OK maybe that's a bit too harsh, but still:* - it learns _literally no STAB moves_ (unless you count Hidden Power Steel); - most of its level-up moveset consists of Dark moves (which run off its bad Special Attack); - it's weak to two somewhat tough gym types - Fire and Fighting, the latter being _literally next to where you first find it_ - as well as Ground, two of these being popular among the ever-present Team Magma; - its only good, non-gimmicky physical moves are Brick Break, Return, Sludge Bomb and I guess Rock Tomb. It doesn't even learn Earthquake!; - it's slow :v +- it's stats are... alright, actually, though nothing too outstanding, since it has just 380 base stat total; + its typing is pretty darn good, somewhat common weaknesses aside; + its abilities are great - Intimidate for more bulk, and Hyper Cutter to block enemy Intimidate :) And lastly, while it's not releavant to this video, in later generations _it still doesn't learn any STAB until 30s or 40s depending on the game_ (outside of Fairy Wind, but that's a special move) I'm not saying it's gonna be absurdly hard, since you've managed to win with much weaker Pokemon. I just wanted to vent my frustration over GameFreak wasting such a great design on a very mediocre battler.
That's actually where I am too XD I suggested a mawile run cause It's literally one of my favorites, then I decided to go back and have a second look at it's debut moveset. Oh gods. OH GODS what were they THINKING
@@JaxtalMK2 I'm surprised it wasn't a Steel/Dark (or even just Dark - it doesn't look very steel-y to me) type to begin with. I mean, just look at all those Dark moves! It even learns Fake Tears, which despite being a Dark move, no Dark type learns it in Gen 3. Mawile would've fixed that if it was Dark.
Me: "Wow, he got to the Fighting Gym REALLY early. Did I nlank out most of the video?" Also me, 3 seconds later: "Oh, right. This is Hoenn, not Johto. At least he doesn't have to fight Jasmine."
Wanted to say thanks for your honesty with the Khimyra sponsorship; because you've always been so upfront with how you handle sponsorships and only vouch for products you yourself enjoy, I went ahead and got myself some of their sweatpants a few weeks ago, and they really are as comfortable as you said they were. I'm glad the sponsorship has been working out so well, and keep up the good work on the challenges and lps!
Emerald slots always remind me of driving home from vacation when I was maybe 13-14 years old and I somehow got the exact timing down to hit 777 every time. I imagined people cheering and their cheers essentially peeking when it was the correct moment. I bought a Porygon.
One idea that might have helped in the fight against steven stone : Learning protect to protect every 2 turn on pokemon that don,t really setup. That can basically double the recovery from leftover. It doesn't seems like return was any help in that fight anyways
I still like the idea of doing a challenge where you can only use the move Assist. Would make it interesting to have to figure out what movesets you have on the other pokemon in your team
i mean he d prolly just have a bunch of assist mons + 1 other mon on the team the whole time and rotate the team member out. although this certainly would make an interesting elite 4.
Just having prankster purloin and dive in moveslots. Whenever you are using assist, you can get first move but during attack turn you go last. It broke the game so much that devs had to nerf it in X and Y. 😆
I thought Mawile was Steel-Dark for a while, and when XY came out and made it Steel-Fairy, I was like "why did they ditch the Dark type" before learning it was actually pure Steel before then
A run with my favorite Pokémon! Oddly enough, I did two Mawile only runs (one on Ruby and the other on Sapphire) before you got to this run. Honestly, I was comparing notes. I'm surprised you didn't think to keep Crunch for both the Psychic Gym and Phoebe. That probably could have saved you some time. I just didn't use Ice Beam until Drake as there was no real need for that thanks to ANOTHER move that could have saved you time. Brick Break. Aggron most likely wouldn't have caused you any problems if you had Brick Break due to the x4 weakness. I'm glad you did this run, and I hope you actually enjoyed it.
gen 2 rival team sounds awesome, just remember that there's an extra fight with him in mt moon in johto where his team is fully evolved...so maybe for the kanto section it'd be fair game to turn haunter into gengar etc.
Totally understand your lack of spring weather lol. Where I live we don't *directly* skip from winter to summer but it does vacillate back and forth really quickly instead of having proper spring. Looking down at the quick weather report and seeing "85 degrees, winter storm warning" is an experience for sure!
One of my top 5 favourites albeit for an unusual reason. While Roserade was Gen 4 and Gardevoir was Gen 6, Mawile was Super Mystery Dungeon. Not as strange as Froslass, but still unusual.
Cool to see you tackle a solo run that I've also done in the past. Gonna take note of any significant differences in approach that come up. First, I think I had an attack-boosting nature on my run, so that no doubt changes things up a fair bit given the necessary reliance on Fake Tears and special moves. Second, definitely recommend using the Roulette in the Game Corner instead of the Slots. The table on the right gives out triple rewards, and the most efficient approach with that is to just select the first slot and either get it in four of six rolls or soft-reset and try again. It builds up coins very quickly and without needing to pay much attention. I'd also say for this run that it was essential, as I got around level 36 without Flamethrower and still wasn't close to beating Wattson (so Game Corner was probably no slower than just grinding out more levels until it was winnable). For the Elite 4, I pumped loads of money into the Game Corner for more coins to get more Flamethrower and Ice Beam TMs, partially for PP conservation but also to give me more flexibility for each Elite 4 member and the champion. By that point in a solo run, I always find that I have way more money than I know what to do with so that seemed optimal. Also for the Elite 4, I made sure to keep Crunch on my moveset at first to help with Phoebe, because with Mawile's low Special Attack having the super-effective buff was very important. I think I actually by this point in my run ended up getting rid of Return entirely to focus on having more coverage and focusing more on Fake Tears. And, as expected when you've been doing these runs far longer than I have (this was only my third ever solo run when I did it), you beat the Champion at a lower level than I did. I was Level 83 by the time I did it and even then it wasn't easy, so fair play for getting it done five levels earlier. I'm hoping that I'll manage to beat one of my solo runs below level 80 one day (I've got as low as level 81 twice with Emolga in White and Houndour in SoulSilver (although in the latter I only go as far as Blue, not Red).
First Pokémon I thought might be a challenge would be Luvdisc, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's done it already, and I just missed it. If not, though, I'd enjoy seeing it done, because I usually regard it as a rather boring 'mon.
Hm. Early prediction but this shouldn't be too bad. If I remember it has intimidate which ought to absolutely help in some capacity on top of its steel type. I don't think it's move pool or stats are that could which could be the struggle but overall this shouldn't be brutal.
I must deny the having Patreon since before I started watching joke. I’ve been around since your Pokémon Creepypasta reading days. Still love listening to the one about Eevee and the Black Stone.
you make every challenge entertaining, binged loads of vids back to back during lockdown and haven't missed a video since. Keep up the great content mate, props from the UK!
You're always saying that using stat changing moves will just let them rain more shots, but in context, dropping their defense by even one stage is almost always more effective than just hitting them twice. Think about how effective just one Leer/Tail Whip would be against Brock in Red/Blue if he didn't have defense curl on everything. If they're strong enough defensively that you think it'll be good, it probably is.
YAY!! Go Mawile!! One of my favourite pokemon being able to solo Steven, even if it has to be level 100 really made my weekend. Love your challenges, they're great both to watch and to have playing in the background when I'm working or just in my own free time.
At 21:55 You say “drops us to about a quarter health.” You might want to check your math on that one again. 75 is over 1/3 of 201 LMAO Love the vids keep it up!
The best way to gamble in gen 3 is the roulette table, you're basically guaranteed payout just for hitting A. turn on turbo on your emulator, turn up the speed, walk away for a few hours.
Mawile is one of those Pokemon that make me believe the physical/special split was supposed to happen in gen 3 but got delayed. It has good attack and bad special attack, but because it mostly learns dark moves it has a mostly special moveset and no STAB because steel attacks were basically limited to Iron Tail, Steel Wing, and Meteor Mash (and Doom Desire but that's Jirachi exclusive).
"I was worried it might be too strong" For what it's worth, I don't think that's something to worry about as far as audience interest is concerned. I enjoy these videos because of *you* MDB, not because I want to hear someone raging over spending hours grinding. Even if a pokemon has a relatively easy time, I'll still probably enjoy it. After all, if every pokemon is ballbustingly difficult then it becomes normal. Having different difficulty runs makes the super hard ones hit more powerfully.
Ok so actually you could’ve gotten dog armor from the attack dogs and equipped it on to Mah-Wile to boost your defense and special defense to sweep through Steven Stone’s team.
Kabuto clan here early. Gotta keep my boy from being forgotten. When given the choice, you almost always choose Omanyte. Just move left one tile and show my boy some love. This disrespect has gone on long enough and I'm taking a stand. I will settle for nothing less than a full team of Kabutos for an episode. If my terms are met then I will support your channel with endowed fervor. If not, I'll start my own channel with blackjack and Kabutos. The success of my channel will be so overwhelming that you retire from RUclips due to the sheer awesomeness of my content. I warn you, you are on a Kabutops edge here. Please stop doing Kabuto dirty and choose him more. Lmao. Do it.
RIP Katya the Magikarp. You'll forever be remembred as the sacrificial lamb for the mandatory doubles battle against Tate and Liza in the Mossdeep City Gym. Splash on, little Katya!
Gotta love the good ol’ flamethrower HM! 😂😂 great video as always MDB. It’s fun to look out for these silly little not important mistakes throughout the scripts of your runs
Had a suggestion for the Tate and Liza fight. You could give yourself a ditto at the same level as Solrock or Lunatone, and transform into your single Pokemon on the first turn. That might make it so you don't need to grind as much for this one battle, and you'll be at a lower level for the remainder of the game.
Time is precious. Use the rare candies to grind. I find it's an even trade off as you don't get the evs you would get while grinding (if you aren't maxed out yet). As long as you don't get too high a level that it isn't a challenge anymore, I'm sure no one would mind terribly.
Thank you for finally uploading a Mawile run in pokémon Emerald! You should make a video using gift pokémon from Johto. Pokémon fusions are really interesting. I definitely remember when there were videos of them. They even inspired a fan game containing only pokémon fusions. Of course, they use specific pokémon fusions.
10:44 I nee to go to bed becase my 23 year old sleepy child brain heard "Butt Fur" and saw the Mightyena on screen then proceeded to giggled as if I just got done smoking a brick of Soop Dogg aprooved weed like Butt Fur is most likely going to be my forever nickname for that poor mon lol
It's interesting to see how much Mawile is struggling, given how terrifying and dangerous the youkai (ancient Japanese folklore monster) it is based on was
i just realized that, after all these years im still tilted that the overworld Sprite never matched the "Trainer would like to battle!" sprites @13:24 is a prime example of it, where a guy with blonde hair & a red tracksuit challenges you, but the sprite for a Cool Trainer has green hair/orange track suit
I am missing some of the Bethesda runs, like oblivion and Skyrim. Maybe the next one? Skyrim with only conjuration maybe?like Just Summons, that would be cool.
Thank you for the video. You should do a run with Blastoise, Octillery, and Golem. XP (No really, go for it!) If you don't know, then you haven't watched enough of the mystery dungeon playthrough.
People are free to have their opinions on how rough mawile can be, and i dont deny that, especially in the old games. But right now I’m playing through Oras with a Mawile bred for Sheer Force (not for stats just for the hidden ability) and it completely makes up for everything. Having dark type moves that are always boosted, combined with the rock tomb TM, makes Mawile such a great attacker to cover types that might be tricky, notably hitting a lot for neutral where others cant early on. Given it the quick claw which pops super often and its been very reliable. If only most Pokemon got their hidden abilities all the time, Mawile is just one with trapped potential.
You know what, considering your twitter profile image, I think you should do a Gengar solo run to make a quick video for a week if you're busy. Whatever game will do I guess, but Gen1 should be the quickest.
I'm commenting this before I finish watching the run, but Mawile is one of my favorite 'mons, and I am losing it over MDB pronouncing it M'wile. Like, it's a Maw! A big ol' mouth! Anyways, it's been a minute since I've watched an MDB video, and I'm glad to be watching again. Thanks, MDB!
Run request: Pokemon Red/Blue with a team of only glitch Pokemon. You beat it with Missingno.; how hard can it be with a team? 5:14 I will HAPPILY watch EITHER of those runs. 13:08 Epic sweep. 22:28 Yeah, you must have pleased Arceus. 25:26 That WAS weird.
‘I have a Patreon. I probably had one before you started watching.’ Me who remembers the premiere of Pokémon Red with only in-game trades: *I BEG TO DIFFER*
idk how possible it would be but i would love to see more challenges based on moves. maybe single type moves, so you can have a full team of anything you want but you can only use dark type moves. might be interesting to see who can learn what and if stab is more important than stat changes etc
i think a fun challenge would be beating the pokemon games with just the eeveelutions introduced in the generation (Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon for Red and Blue, Umbreon and Espeon for Gold and Silver, Leafeon and Glaceon for D/P/P and Sylveon for X/Y)
Id love to see an Emerald Kaizo-Run with only Psyducks. Only youre Starterpsyduck would be allowed to evolve into Golduck and if i could wish for it you name your Starter Torwel. Love youre Challanges MDB! :)
24:20 if you needed just a sliver of extra health to finish this fight, using fake tears on aggron as the 1st move would have been better than flamethrower. Aggron would still eq on its first turn, and you'd still ko it on the next turn, but you'd also get the shell bell benefits from aggron being at full hp instead of less than half.
rare candy is a good idea, nothing is really all that different from just fighting endless random battles for the same experience, it doesn't change the mechanics of the challenge
I have a theory on how to improve the Steven match, but you'd need a cheat for Battle Points. Get Swords Dance from the tutor, then teach Brick Break and keep Return and Flamethrower. It's a bit spotty, but you can live an Earthquake, as well as Brick Break circumventing Reflect.
Dude! Noway! i'm currently doing a gen2 gift pokemon only run! (well i'm doing it in HGSS, but it's technically the same overall game) I'm not a youtuber so my runs are just for my own fun. I had to make up a bunch of new rules for myself becasue Gen2 is notoriously under leveled, but i'm legitimately happy/surprised to see a poketuber doing the same challenge i'm currently doing for fun! :D good luck!

Mawile is my absolute favorite, glad to see this run!
you make every challenge entertaining, binged loads of vids back to back during lockdown and haven't missed a video since.
I just realised why Mawile was a highly requested run. It has pretty nice Hoenn Dex number ;].
2:07 The irony, Mawile’s other ability is intimidate
At this point the kymara ad is just as exciting as the fossil or youngster Joey bits; I love it
Mawhile has bad special defense, but shes got perks in other places, should be interesting
At 21:55 You say “drops us to about a quarter health.” You might want to check your math on that one again. 75 is over 1/3 of 201 LMAO Love the vids keep it up!
Mawile been my fav mon since i first played the game hyped for this
Best. Pokémon. Ever.
The best way to gamble in gen 3 is the roulette table, you're basically guaranteed payout just for hitting A. turn on turbo on your emulator, turn up the speed, walk away for a few hours.
Finally my favorite Pokémon get a solo run! :')
Great job dude!
For a future run you should name the pokemon "Griff Garrison" in the game but only ever refer to it as "jungle boy"
Hey, you're wrong though, dogmeat can totally get armour in fallout 4!
One of your best ones!! The ones with alot of struggle and close fights are the best
I came to the live premiere! I always have a good day when I watch your videos! Keep up the awesome work!
You could've saved yourself a lot of trouble in a few points by learning Crunch. There's a reason it has that big jaw on its head.
6:20 that one frame of nothing where i though he put a hidden message xD
This was a fun run! Also excited for next week! It's always nice to see a fuller team from time to time.
MDB: surely Wally must have some good attacks
Me: no, and don't call me Shirley
Great Pokemon choice on my Birthday, MDB! Glad to see the consistency and enjoying your content.
Also, I gotta know what fossil you picked 😌
Happy Birthday!
On the psychic gym, I'm wondering why he did not use ice beam on the Xatu? It is part flying type.
Lmao. Do it.
Wait he tells us witch fossil he took? I always ask in the comments; it's good for the algorithm.
RIP Katya the Magikarp. You'll forever be remembred as the sacrificial lamb for the mandatory doubles battle against Tate and Liza in the Mossdeep City Gym. Splash on, little Katya!
Your Pokemon nicknaming game keeps getting stronger, I love it lol
Gotta love the good ol’ flamethrower HM! 😂😂 great video as always MDB. It’s fun to look out for these silly little not important mistakes throughout the scripts of your runs
Had a suggestion for the Tate and Liza fight. You could give yourself a ditto at the same level as Solrock or Lunatone, and transform into your single Pokemon on the first turn. That might make it so you don't need to grind as much for this one battle, and you'll be at a lower level for the remainder of the game.
I like the gift runs because you get the added challenge of sometimes they don't listen to you
Time is precious. Use the rare candies to grind. I find it's an even trade off as you don't get the evs you would get while grinding (if you aren't maxed out yet). As long as you don't get too high a level that it isn't a challenge anymore, I'm sure no one would mind terribly.
Sweet 4 challenges a month is amazing I love these especially when you do gen 5 and gen 2 games
This was actually the first challenge run I ever did. I got inspired by watching these vids and decided to try my hand at doing a challenge run.
Mawile is my favorite Pokemon, so I'm so happy to see you doing a run of it!
i love whenever i hear maxie i hear maxx "c" lmao keep up the great content!
Mawile is Pokemon number 69 think that is why so many people wanted him to do this run. NICE!!
In my first winning nuzlocke in 2012 of Ruby, Mawile was incredibly clutch with fake tears + ice beam in the elite four.
It's interesting to see how much Mawile is struggling, given how terrifying and dangerous the youkai (ancient Japanese folklore monster) it is based on was
i just realized that, after all these years im still tilted that the overworld Sprite never matched the "Trainer would like to battle!" sprites
@13:24 is a prime example of it, where a guy with blonde hair & a red tracksuit challenges you, but the sprite for a Cool Trainer has green hair/orange track suit
This is the first time i saw him beat steven
I am missing some of the Bethesda runs, like oblivion and Skyrim. Maybe the next one?
Skyrim with only conjuration maybe?like Just Summons, that would be cool.
Thank you for the video. You should do a run with Blastoise, Octillery, and Golem. XP (No really, go for it!)
If you don't know, then you haven't watched enough of the mystery dungeon playthrough.
Mawile, my favorite pokemon !!!! Thank you MDB, after all these years of following you 🤩
You know what, considering your twitter profile image, I think you should do a Gengar solo run to make a quick video for a week if you're busy. Whatever game will do I guess, but Gen1 should be the quickest.
Om nom nom.
Requesting Pokemon B2W2 With Only One Chinchou.
It would have been cool to do this challenge on ORAS. Cause you could of had Mega later
‘I have a Patreon. I probably had one before you started watching.’
Me who remembers the premiere of Pokémon Red with only in-game trades: *I BEG TO DIFFER*
Mawile is one of my favourite Pokemon so I'm super glad to see this run!!
the steel pokemon that can't learn steel moves in this game (not counting iron defence). good job game freak
I've literally been using the slots in Fire Red right now because I'm doing a fire type only challenge and need flamethrower
i for some reason always seemed to think mawile was dark type dunno why
Glad that im not alone.
As someone also from Ontario I feel that pain with the weather, you only get winter or 8 months of summer
idk how possible it would be but i would love to see more challenges based on moves. maybe single type moves, so you can have a full team of anything you want but you can only use dark type moves. might be interesting to see who can learn what and if stab is more important than stat changes etc
Thank you for this. Next to Gardevoir, Mawile is one of my favorite gen 3 mons
i think a fun challenge would be beating the pokemon games with just the eeveelutions introduced in the generation (Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon for Red and Blue, Umbreon and Espeon for Gold and Silver, Leafeon and Glaceon for D/P/P and Sylveon for X/Y)
This is one of the best Pokémon that's highly underrated
We’ve been waiting mAWHILE for this one.
