Mastering SWING SEQUENCE (2 SIMPLE Drills!)

  • To excel in golf, mastering a seamless swing sequence is paramount. However, with numerous moving components, this task is easier said than done. In this instructional video, I introduce two straightforward drills that harmonize WRIST articulation with ARM motion and BODY dynamics.
    In my view, many golfers tend to prematurely engage their bodies during the transition. Elite golfers typically SLIDE their legs out from underneath them which traps their arms behind them as they approach impact causing PUSHES and HOOKS! On the other hand, weekend warriors often resort to a transition SPIN, initiating upper body rotation too early which throws the arms out and over the plane causing PULLS and SLICES!
    While these issues manifest differently, they share a common requirement: the body must momentarily stall for the arms to catch up in the downswing. This, in turn, leads to an EARLY RELEASE, negatively impacting contact and control.
    For effective sequencing, I recommend two drills:
    1. *FEET TOGETHER* This drill is exceptional for helping golfers stabilize their bodies, allowing their hands and arms to swing freely.
    2. *RIGHT FOOT BACK* This drill not only addresses swing path but also encourages proper weight transfer to the lead leg. Many golfers tend to hang back through impact, but this drill promotes a balanced shift to the lead side.
    Practice each drill with a few swings, then integrate the same sensations into your regular swing. Focus on SHIFTING your weight into the lead side as your ARMS DESCEND during the transition, and smoothly connect your TRAIL ARM with your TRAIL HIP during the follow-through.
    Remember to BRACE your lead leg and allow your trail side to turn into it, as opposed to trying to move your left hip out of the way. These adjustments will improve you SWING SEQUENCE and enhance your performance.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hello Coach A,
    Due to life events, I've been playing golf off and on for decades. Early on, I wasted my money on golf instructions from a bad instructor; and I've been self taught ever since. (There are not many instructors in my area.) When I needed help with my swing, I turned to RUclips. Let's just say that, some are better than others.
    Now that I am retired, I am playing more and trying to improve my game. Thankfully, I recently stumbled upon your channel. I've searched for years and this is the best video that I have found on the principles, goals and timing of a simple, yet very effective golf swing. Very well done Sir! Please keep up your great work of sharing your wisdom of the golf swing with us. Thank you once again...

    Excellent explanation of moving the back hip into the front side….into a braced front side for a stabilized brace to sling the club at the target. I have been trying, as you described, to rotate the front hip back but have been pulling a lot of my shots left and a bunch of toe strikes. I tried your explanation and immediately got 10+ years of carry with a push draw ball flight with much better contact.

    Ive watched tons of videos, but this is by far the most most valuable one Ive seen for "my swing". I have begun the downswing by spinning the shoulders for a long time. The drills shown here are helping me to unlearn that. I'm making better contact and have improved my distance and control doing these drills.

      You’re not alone, so many golfers transition spin because they’ve been told to use their body to square the club face! It’s essential to understand how to sequence your arms with your body and I’m glad this video helped you understand this concept!

    Brilliant Instruction Andrew. When I took up golf many years ago, the leadbetter idea of a body orientated swing with passive arms was the thinking at that time. You are spot on in that this has lead to most of us lunging at the ball with our shoulders to get power. ' let the dog wag the tail' sounded like it made sense. Unfortunately it just doesn't for most of us. Carry on the good work.

    Good video. I'd add that optimal angular momentum of the clubhead comes from effective implementation of the double-pendulum. Getting this right negates squaring the clubface with the hands at impact.

      @@AndrewEmeryGolf Thanks for your reply. If you get the pendulum mechanism right you will feel that freedom you speak of in your forearms. The clubhead swings or orbits around the hands as if without effort. The key reference for this is CB Daish 1971 The Physics of Ball Games.

    How close to your body should your hands be during the downswing and as you hit the ball? How low should they be, also, for example at waist level or above or below? Thanks....good video.

    • @AndrewEmeryGolf
      @AndrewEmeryGolf  10 месяцев назад +2

      Hand Path is critical but is influenced greatly by the movement of the body and arms. Certainly in the transition your hands should remain close to you. At impact your hand position will vary depending on your grip strength and club face orientation! Stronger grip - hands further forward and higher at impact. Neutral grip hand less forward and lower at impact. One size doesn’t fit all!!

      For sure in the transition! Linear Momentum comes from the hands and arms applying force against the grip as the club changes direction. From there that energy is traded for angular momentum as the wrists unhinge and re-hinge. ⛳️🏌️‍♂️🙏🏻

      It’s likely you’re transition spinning and then over rotating the club at impact. Keep your back to the target longer. Start with the club face aimed a few degrees “open” at address. And, keep your hands to the side of the club as you exit. You don’t want your trail hand on top of the club at the point of collision! 💥

    Very confused! So are you teaching to pull down to hip height using just the arms and then using a rapid rollover release to gain speed instead of using the hips to drop the arms then releasing the hands?

    • @jjaynes72
      @jjaynes72 8 месяцев назад +1

      Love your teaching style by the way. I’m 59 yrs old with a bad back and have been trying to find a way to get the speed using my hands instead of firing the body but the challenge for me is doing it without throwing the hands from the top or pulling the arms down without feeling the body involved. Both have led to awful results (very inconsistent contact)..

    • @AndrewEmeryGolf
      @AndrewEmeryGolf  8 месяцев назад

      Like everything in golf. It’s not all hands, arms or body. It’s a harmonious marriage between all three. I think possibly what’s missing is an attention to tension in your arms as you swing. The arms want to drop, the toe of the club is lighter in mass than the heel and ‘wants’ to rotate!
      Most golfers unfortunately don’t allow their arms to drop and the club to rotate - instead they ‘transition spin’ which leads to a myriad of problems!
      There is no ‘rapid rollover!’ It’s not an open to closed release pattern, rather the club ideally remains square or slightly closed to its intended path! Work on your cadence and I think you’ll start to improve your swing sequence!
      Less effort (body)= more speed (hands & arms!)
      Best, Coach A. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️🙏🏻
