One of the rare instructors who actually understand where speed comes from. Anyone saying the body is the key to speed does not undersrand how angular momentum works to generate speed. No doubt, the body It is a critical component in "building" the proper sequence to allow speed to happen, but the arms and hands are the engine that delivers it to the ball. Great video sir👍👍
Fluidity….is a word seldom used by instructors but, if you watch Freddie Couples, Ernie Els, Tony Finau…they ooze fluidity. There’s no stiffness, no rushing, seemingly no effort and that can only come from relaxed muscles and premium timing. I often forget the value of being relaxed but you’ve given me a timely reminder, cheers coach!

Enjoyed this video because on 4/4/23 had open heart surgery. I am on the road to a very good recovery. Luckily, my followup cardiologist is a golfer. So, he advised, I could not touch a club until I was 8 weeks out and then it was only chipping and putting. (Not bad, that part of my game needed work anyway). Then, at 12 weeks out, July 4th, I could swing easy and only a 3/4 swing. I was told it would not be a bad idea to keep the 3/4 swing for the rest of this season. So, that's what I have been doing. I cannot believe how much improvement I have notice in my ball contact and even though, I have only played five 9 hole rounds my ball striking and accuracy has improved and I have shaved off a couple of strokes off the 9 hole score, due to the 4 weeks of chipping and putting and now better contact. Your video feeds right into my whole rehab program. I forwarded this video to the Cardiologist and he responded that he is going to pin it for more heart rehab patients to view and use. Keep up the good work.

excellent. this all resonates with my experience (took up the game this year, 5 days a week at the range, lessons, full immersion, few rounds, learning focus). first instructor was all about aggro hip twist right from the top of the backswing. all it did was hurt my back and got me out of synch. this lesson reinforces all the details and timing that when they come together for me, make for brilliant straight shots. i'm getting there.

Yep, similar experience, not as intense. Major focus on hips from my instructor. A bit older so not as flexible. Watched B Langer in slow motion -- my instructor would be all over him for his less than optimum hip turn. This articulation of the wrists immediately gave me not only more length but more consistent shots -- still need the body to do its part -- lots of moving parts to get in sync under pressure.
Thank you. Even though I have played for over 62 years, I need to go back and do these drills. In particular, keeping the hands facing the way you show may help overcome my tendency to create excessive side spin left. It may not ruin a wedge shot, but if I hit an 11 wood or 9 wood off a tee to a 150 or 160 yard par three it can produce a shot that is high the way I want, but that comes down 20 yards or more left of the entire green.
this is timely for me. i'm glad you acknowledge that there seems to be some disagreement in the pro instructional community. there are a few who advocate a very firm arm structure and never discuss the wrist at all (i've watched hours of their material) and some who base their entire approach on hinge and rehinge! i've recently come across Pete Cowan working with various youtube teaching pros, and he's the most confusing of all! he seems to advocate for no wrists, which strikes me as very difficult. i also appreciate that you recognize some aspect of timing can't be simply taken away from the golf swing just through body mechanics.

Andrew, how do you speed up your arms in the downswing to go from hitting at 50% to 75% to full out? It's my understanding that you should not "pull down" in the transition, so what is the feeling you have when you're speeding up for more distance?

Dang this guy is for real! He gave me two things to do and I’m hitting irons further with a slight fade or draw, coming from a slice all day. I’m working on one of his tips to keep it a draw( knuckles slight down on the down swing) Your videos are priceless!!!
Andrew outstanding instructions for every HCer out there, the key is you have to listen to what your saying, I love the way you have to explain your concepts so the know it alls so they don't throw there 2 cents in and correct you lol , I read alot of comments in golf instructions and some people who think they wrote the book on the golf swing have to correct or give there opinions lol It's insane, anyway I'm ranting, this video is right to the piont and excellent for every type of golfer, I'm all about forces in the swing I'm not crazy about mechanics, when you were talking about tention in your joints I believe could be the most important concept to a good golf swing! and I loved the way you said not your hands how they need to be firmly on grip, and the right grip hands on the sides ,stay the same at setup all the whey thru till you contact the ball,,,. very very important for me to hear this things again, such a great video ,Thank you for being honest about how to create power!!

Have watched many golf teaching idea's and viewed the positive comments that follow via RUclips. I have to say this is the one for everyone,so forget all the other methods you have tried and give this a good go.Not only will you improve using this relaxed method,you are not putting pressure on your body to swing the handle so back problems in the past.Try with a neutral grip because your hands are more relaxed and if you need to strengthen a little.

This wrist hinge thing has been most confusing - as you state some folks say its all hips -- started going with the 'articulation' and its made a big a difference and seems to make the hips move more naturally also -- yes, like this video have to work to get it working together is sequence. My first experience with golf was as a kid 11 and 12 years old with my grandfather.Im naturally left handed and I started learning with rt handed clubs.I never changed to lelf handed clubs and it feels perfectly natural to play rt handed.I do believe it was easier for me to learn to swing on a good plane because I don't over use my rt arm.Timing is everything .To get the club to quare up at the rt time in the swing takes some consistent practice . I primarily swing the club with my left hand dominate gripping with the last three fingers of the left hand.Grip pressure must be consistent through out the swing.The more relaxed the for arms and the joins in the hands the more centrifical force you can generate.Iv been playing off and on for over three decades .Iv had years when I played exstreamly well and a few years when I played bad.The years I played bad I wasnt doing what this teacher is trying to get across to the golfer thats trying to play the game better.Iv experimented with my rt arm and side and Iv found you can release the club with either.I couldn't tell much different trying to use my rt verses my left.I will say when I'm feeling I'm controlling the club with my left Iv played much better golf day in and day out.I had to practice alittle daily to get the timing down.Im actually playing my best golf now and I'm in my early 60s.Iv not lost any distance at all.I had some problems with my eyes wer I could not see the last several years so my heart just wasn't in it.I had surgery on both of them and now I can see as good as I could in my 20s.Golf has become fun again.this teacher is explaining something that took me along time to really under stand.I feel that my arms are slighty ahead in the golf swing when I'm driving the ball good.I feel this with all my clubs rather they are or not that's what I'm feeling.I under Stand what he is teaching here.We cannot consistently play this game well or have a chance to play well if we do not have the knowledge and understanding .Be for I got to playing better after I started back trying to play the game again I really wasn't able to pull it all together until I worked on my alinement.If you are consistently tugging the ball left or hitting it out to the rt.you can't begin to fix that until you fix your alinement.The brain does some funny things to the swing Say if your always lineing up left and tugging the ball over there with your irons your brain is probably not going to let you swing at your target.It going to swing left.Anyone that has good balance and weight transfer through the ball can take the things this teacher is EXSPLAINING and play there best golf with out going to the range all the time.Afew minutes every day will do alot more than going to the range once a week to improve your game because it timing.A person that plays an instrument understands if he is trying to memorize a song he's going to work at it a few minutes every day.He is not going to practice the song for two hours once a week because he knows it evolves timing.The 15 or 20 mins every day is going to give the musician timing.The golf swing works the same way.

Thank you for improving the audio 😄of your videos. This series of simple drills is terrific. I saw an immediate improvement in my swing speed. These drills can be added to just about any golf "system" without contradicting that system. Some so-called tips or drills make your swing worse before it gets better. Not these drills. For those people who flip their wrists (who? me?), the split hand drill goes a long way to eliminating that speed leak. Thanks Andrew.

Thank you for a most informative video - you are a breath of fresh air - coach John Jacobs must be cheering from above👍👍👍 Question please, I have lost the use of the last 3 fingers of my lead hand so can no longer grip the club in an orthodox manner. HIn your teaching have you encountered this in your reaching career and if so, have you any suggestions so that I can keep playing? I add that I am an octave durian golfer so physical limitations are an accepted golfing way of life but limited use of the lead hand is proving a real challenge. Currently busy with expediting with balancing the handle with the thumb and forefinger of thr lead hand (in my case left hand) and then trying to get the handle pivoting around the trail hand as dominant hand. Hi Bill! Thank you so much for your kind words-it means a lot to me that you found the video helpful. I'm sorry to hear about the challenges you're facing with your lead hand, but I admire your determination to keep playing. You're on the right track by focusing on balancing the handle with your thumb and forefinger and using your trail hand as the dominant force in your swing. I’d suggest experimenting with larger grips and lighter clubs, such as those from XXIO, (it’s worth the investment!) lightest possible is huge! In addition to that, I recommend training by hitting balls with just your right arm. I've worked with a golfer who was paralyzed entirely down his left side after a stroke, and he was able to hit high draws using only his right arm-you’re already ahead of where he started! How timely. 🙂 At 70, finally committing to overcoming "standing up/early release". So many psychological roadblocks to overcome. Had recently made to the point getting some balls heading in the right direction without noticeable hand/wrist/forearm manipulation, but with side tilt and without the head popping up. Permission to work the wrists this way is *so* welcomed! I *promise* I won't over-do it! That left heel thing *may* help me get through this last roadblock of the "hip bump/left foot pressure/left knee bend" *followed* by the left hip up and back thing. The timing seems impossible. Wondering now if maybe thinking of the left foot pressure thing might be via a different part of the foot and have it "married to" the following heel stomp. Wishful thinking? Misunderstanding that sequence?
Salient points, thank you! Try and stay out of the weeds if you can. The game is hard enough without too many swing thoughts. You know how that ends up on the golf course! Having said that think of the transition as a smooth change in direction with your arms dropping as you front load. It’s like a dance! Feel the marriage between the two. The biggest thing is NOT to ‘transition SPIN!’ Or, have a violent disruption from the top! It’s essential that you STALL the spin phase as you change direction. Golf instructors are HELL BENT on getting golfers as open as possible at impact and it’s not helping the vast majority of golfers that early extend when trying to do this! Simply keep your back to the target as LONG as possible when you change direction! Your arms will drop down in front of you perfectly. There is of course timing which you mention in your comment. That part is/and will always be unavoidable! But once you start to feel the marriage between your arms and your body you can start to think less and feel more! ..at 11:16 coach demonstrates the forearm Xshape, if you use a baseball grip for a day and try to achieve the forearm X you’ll end up releasing properly, for me this was the most important pattern to build into my swing, everything else then needs to conform to this release, thanks coach A
Interesting concept. A neutral/weak grip would be able to handle a more 'active' wrist thru impact - but someone with a stronger grip (3 knuckles, or more) would might suffer dispersion issues if the wrists are too active. As a strong grip player - I found I play my best golf when i have "quiet" hands thru impact.
A very salient point! Find the release pattern that works for you Salvatore!!! If you have a stronger grip you’re going to want to release your speed into lead wrist extension more than rotation!! I work with a lot of elite golfers and almost ALL my high speed players with strong grips hit fades!! Really enjoyed this video and the drills. I have injuries to my wrist so struggle with full wrist flexing...e.g. I can only do press ups on my knuckles. Getting older as well so rotation becomes more limted resulting in loss of yardage. Any tips would be welcome.😊
Please don’t try and over flex your lead wrist! If you get a little steep trying to do this you can injure your wrist. If you missing right then simply strengthen your grip at address! Make sure the club isn’t to high in the lead palm. And allow your forearms to rotate “tension free”. Don’t force your shoulders in the transition because you’ll be playing catch up later in the swing with your wrists. Allow the club head to work freely. So stronger grip, aim the face a little right (where you want the ball to start), align the body a little further right and play some little soft draws! A wonderful presentation,wish you were closer for a in person lesson.I am curious about your opinion as to what happens and when the bow in a golf shaft straightens during the swing and does it add head speed.Also is head droop a factor.
Hi Randolph, I haven’t done a ton of research on shaft dynamics to be honest. I have club fitters that handle that side of things for me. My only advice there is to go as flexible as you can reasonably control! The right shaft will definitely add club head speed - If you haven’t been fitted then do so!! If its just a drill, that is one thing. But if it is meant to be incorporated into a normal shot this becomes very important and an added difficulty to re-align to the ball in the downswing. Schaun- great question! Set up to the ball normally and simply elevate your arms. Do NOT extend your upper body! (maintain your posture). Then swing the club forward and keep the arms elevated slightly above the ball as you swing to the top of your backswing. It takes a little practice but you’ll re-establish your radius after a few tries! Start with a tee first (no ball), and then graduate to a ball on a tee! Hope that makes sense!? Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Terrific video. I agreed with you right up to the fast twitch muscles in the wrists. To my view the wrists can act as a free hinge in the kinematic chain. They add speed because just like a (loose) leather thong in the old agricultural flails.
@@AndrewEmeryGolf Now that I think about it you are right in what you say for the swing you describe. One can imagine fast twitch fibres definitely are in play where there is a deliberate and very rapid squaring of the clubface aka the release. The swing I mention is more like what was in vogue in 1850-1910 when the hickory shafts were quite flexible and less responsive to being controlled by the hands. Like cracking a whip as some have described that old action.
Very good …close to what I learned 35 years ago .. almost all the pros were “ Hands “ players…good on you I teach this method to this day … I will though argue with the first point about your hand being on the side -s of the golf club … For my money the are as the should be on the top of the golf club . That the way to “ strike “ a descending downward swing plain …. Don’t spank it… and not saying you would suggest that … Strike … Ok let’s proceed to the rest of the video …
Andrew one of your best thus far great drills I also like how Marcus Edblad on his YT channel explains the circle of speed. You two are the go too guys on YT.
Andrew, I am finding your verbal imagery to be really helpful. At around 15:10 you discuss the left heel, left knee, left quad pushing into the ground to create the "firm left side" that the right side can push against and fire and generate speed. Doing this while keeping the pelvis from moving closer to the ball is also key. Question: I feel (think) I have to get the arms moving down a fraction of a second before I crush the bug under my left heel sequence. Starting with the body rotation and then moving the arms will tend to throw the upper body out and over the top...I think?
I have the feel, mainly on driver, that I throw the clubhead towards the ball to start the downswing. Not start it with any lower body movement. But it's just a fraction of a second before the lower body moves.
The legs are 20percent of the power.20 percent of 250 is 50.250 pluss 50 is 300.He is teaching something that is absolutely correct .The legs do play a part in distance and so does the shoulders but unless you are doing exactly what he is teaching the legs and shoulders aren't going to help you get longer.
I really like the video and your swing makes it look so easy but when I've tried it in the past I end up flipping is it because I'm not turning through?
Colin - I talk about body dynamics at around 13mins. You likely need a more ‘supported’ release. IF you’re ‘rolling’ OR over (rotating) your forearms too much then you’ll have a problem. Anything can be overdone as you know. Ideally you should keep both hands to the side of the club through impact. But if your grip is VERY strong then you should feel like your lead wrist is pointing up more as you release the club! I hope that help! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
In the back swing if the right palm is facing downward why does there need to be any rotation on the way down. It should come down the way it went up. Or did I get it wrong?
The trail palm actually should feel like it’s facing up more at the top which keeps the club face more stable. It’s a good idea to feel like the trail palm is pointing down in the initial part of the backswing because so many golfers roll the club open early! The forearms rotate in the backswing, this requires re-rotation on the way down in order to square the club face and of course engage angular momentum. Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
I admit I hate the concept of releasing the club, the golf club will release naturally because the club head is heavier than the grip end. As golfers we tend to fall into one of two camps: those that try to "assist" the release which usually ends up with flipping the club or rolling the wrists, and those who do the exact opposite and try and stop the release which usually ends up with a horrible chicken wing look in the follow through. Andrew's drills are great as long as you approach them with the idea of letting the club do the work - don't try and assist it or restrict it

I’ve always felt that speed comes from a symphony of motions ‘throughout’ the body!The dynamic movement of the body, the swinging motion of the arms and of course the articulation of the wrists! This resonates with me. I'm 70 and haven't really played for 15 years. Was about a 10 HC, but now ... Had lumbar fusion about 2 years ago. Been trying some of these drills and feel they are pretty body friendly. The L to L drill really seems to create decent speed without trying to generate a lot of power with my back and also seems to help with rhythm. And combined with the feet together drill promotes solid contact.
If it’s used at the right time absolutely! But it should be noted that the gals on the LPGA have faster hip speed on average but hit the ball a great deal shorter than the guys on the PGA Tour! Food for thought! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
If you are in gaging you quadsracepts you are like a fader of the ball Ala Brooks Koepka … The reason one would early extend or hump the ball come over the top or loose their balance is lack of sufficient pelvic tilt … Conversely proper pelvic ingaging your glutes and hamstring ( leg bicepts ) reduces humping early extension and loss of body ballance … [ See Dr. Greg Rose work at online Titleist performance Institute T.P.I. ] Let’s carry on shall we…

In my opinion the L to L drill and the split hands drill are the only way beginners should learn to swing the club. They should hit about a 1000 balls each with those 2 drills and even play that way on the course. If I had done that I wouldn't have wasted 4 years just trying to learn to get the ball into the air reliably when it's not on a tee. The top or skulled shot is the most frustrating shot there is in golf bar none - and these 2 drills eliminate that.
If you have any pain you should consult a Doctor. You’d could be gripping it too tight, you may also be very steep which can stress the wrists but you shouldn’t have wrist pain! Be well! ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

I think you're a great teacher and I really appreciate the balance as in "of course I'm not suggesting the body isn't involved", etc. I'd like to relate a recent "ah ha" moment for me that fits well with your point (maybe others have / had the same problem I did) that we need to get rid of the tension in our hands, arms, and shoulders. We hear a lot about "a one-piece take away" where we maintain the triangle while turning our shoulders around the spine at the start of the backswing. Sure, technically that's good advice. However, one day I watched several PGA Tour swings that were already in slow motion, but I played them at 1/4 speed. It was then obvious that on every swing I watched it didn't take very long in the start of the backswing before the clubhead and shaft started to outpace the hands and arms, and also early on the arms started to outpace the shoulder turn (primarily I think because of lack of tension in the shoulder muscles and the ball and socket joint that connects the arms / shoulders to the body). Of course we need to maintain good structure (spine angle, shoulder angle, weight within the foundation and not swaying, etc.) and we don't want to become on overcooked wet linguini noodle, but once I realized the subtle difference between what was really happening in the take-away vs. a rigid solid-steel triangle I was able to release the tension much better. I also realized I was standing a good half inch too far away from the ball at address because of all that stiff tension. Thank you again for relating your emphasis points to other things happening in the overall swing. That is very helpful to me. Edit: Don't mean to imply whipping the clubhead and shaft to the inside by the "outpacing" comment. Just allowing the weight of the clubhead to naturally start doing its thing early on (lack of tension in the wrists) while staying on plane. Some others like me might be so "literal" that my comment could be misinterpreted that way.
Very salient points! The backswing has a sequence, as does the downswing! Dragging the club away is a misconception - If you do that your shoulders will meet their destination to early, and of course the hands and arms will meet their destination too late! Use the MOMENTUM DRILL to help you sequence your backswing. The club head has a lot further to travel to the top - so it needs to travel faster!! Get after it! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

Flex is equally important because your speed through impact will influence the amount of force you place on the shaft. Too soft generally will increase spin and accuracy, too stiff will require too much work with low flight, low spinning shots. Les, I totally get it!! In the past few years coaches have been obsessed with stabilizing the club face and pacifying the hands. When 85% of golfers slice and struggle with distance ask yourself if that makes sense?!? If you’re an elite golfer, phenomenal athlete of Tour Player that struggles with hooking the ball and controlling their (plentiful) distance then stabilizing the club face would be helpful right! I like the message and ams dont use their hands very well but…..you’ll notice anytime somebody demonstrates how fast the hands are they demonstrate with a stick and not a driver……..Its a cheap parlor trick to get the message across not the reality.

If you have seen that new training aid called the GEM with the weight on the bottom of the club, it is designed to orient the club so the toe always point up. That's how the club moves with the top of the club always pointing up and your hands on either side of it.
Next point and you can research it …. Sir Nick Faldo advocates a chicken wing method to talk five yards of the total length of the shot and control trajectory and spin whin needed or it become practicable …⛳️🏌🏻♂️👀 Let’s carry on to the remainder of the video …..
My gosh, as you know - there are so many ways of releasing Jeffrey. Release patterns are all about match ups - grips of course dictate what release works best. I’ve never felt like one size fits ALL! When I’m on the lesson tee I’m obsessed with finding what works best for the individual that’s in front of me! Having said that - The artistry is in the hands for sure, bend one from left to right around a tree and that left elbow is working up for sure. Low hook would be the opposite! A little hold off fade, a high draw, a stinger (cut) then (draw). It’s where imagination and feel/artistry meet! But I’m sure you agree - you need to build good fundamentals first. One of the rare instructors who actually understand where speed comes from.
Anyone saying the body is the key to speed does not undersrand how angular momentum works to generate speed. No doubt, the body It is a critical component in "building" the proper sequence to allow speed to happen, but the arms and hands are the engine that delivers it to the ball.

Fluidity….is a word seldom used by instructors but, if you watch Freddie Couples, Ernie Els, Tony Finau…they ooze fluidity. There’s no stiffness, no rushing, seemingly no effort and that can only come from relaxed muscles and premium timing. I often forget the value of being relaxed but you’ve given me a timely reminder, cheers coach!

Enjoyed this video because on 4/4/23 had open heart surgery. I am on the road to a very good recovery. Luckily, my followup cardiologist is a golfer. So, he advised, I could not touch a club until I was 8 weeks out and then it was only chipping and putting. (Not bad, that part of my game needed work anyway). Then, at 12 weeks out, July 4th, I could swing easy and only a 3/4 swing. I was told it would not be a bad idea to keep the 3/4 swing for the rest of this season. So, that's what I have been doing. I cannot believe how much improvement I have notice in my ball contact and even though, I have only played five 9 hole rounds my ball striking and accuracy has improved and I have shaved off a couple of strokes off the 9 hole score, due to the 4 weeks of chipping and putting and now better contact.
Your video feeds right into my whole rehab program. I forwarded this video to the Cardiologist and he responded that he is going to pin it for more heart rehab patients to view and use. Keep up the good work.

excellent. this all resonates with my experience (took up the game this year, 5 days a week at the range, lessons, full immersion, few rounds, learning focus). first instructor was all about aggro hip twist right from the top of the backswing. all it did was hurt my back and got me out of synch. this lesson reinforces all the details and timing that when they come together for me, make for brilliant straight shots. i'm getting there.

Yep, similar experience, not as intense. Major focus on hips from my instructor. A bit older so not as flexible. Watched B Langer in slow motion -- my instructor would be all over him for his less than optimum hip turn. This articulation of the wrists immediately gave me not only more length but more consistent shots -- still need the body to do its part -- lots of moving parts to get in sync under pressure.

Thank you. Even though I have played for over 62 years, I need to go back and do these drills. In particular, keeping the hands facing the way you show may help overcome my tendency to create excessive side spin left. It may not ruin a wedge shot, but if I hit an 11 wood or 9 wood off a tee to a 150 or 160 yard par three it can produce a shot that is high the way I want, but that comes down 20 yards or more left of the entire green.

this is timely for me. i'm glad you acknowledge that there seems to be some disagreement in the pro instructional community. there are a few who advocate a very firm arm structure and never discuss the wrist at all (i've watched hours of their material) and some who base their entire approach on hinge and rehinge! i've recently come across Pete Cowan working with various youtube teaching pros, and he's the most confusing of all! he seems to advocate for no wrists, which strikes me as very difficult. i also appreciate that you recognize some aspect of timing can't be simply taken away from the golf swing just through body mechanics.
Very salient points, thanks for the intelligent feedback! Like all things the truth lies somewhere in between the two extremes in my humble opinion. It’s just that the vast majority of golfers would be better served by mobilizing their systems and articulating their wrists correctly! When you consider how many golfers (80%) lack club head speed and slice that makes sense!
While ‘high speed’ guys have already learned to do that and require are more supported release! I get it! The problem lies in suggesting that one size fits all. It doesn’t!

Andrew, how do you speed up your arms in the downswing to go from hitting at 50% to 75% to full out? It's my understanding that you should not "pull down" in the transition, so what is the feeling you have when you're speeding up for more distance?
Andrew hit the ball well for the most part. Your drills are really helped me but it seems like I still have trouble holding my finish. What do you think the problem is with that?

Andrew outstanding instructions for every HCer out there, the key is you have to listen to what your saying, I love the way you have to explain your concepts so the know it alls so they don't throw there 2 cents in and correct you lol , I read alot of comments in golf instructions and some people who think they wrote the book on the golf swing have to correct or give there opinions lol It's insane, anyway I'm ranting, this video is right to the piont and excellent for every type of golfer, I'm all about forces in the swing I'm not crazy about mechanics, when you were talking about tention in your joints I believe could be the most important concept to a good golf swing! and I loved the way you said not your hands how they need to be firmly on grip, and the right grip hands on the sides ,stay the same at setup all the whey thru till you contact the ball,,,. very very important for me to hear this things again, such a great video ,Thank you for being honest about how to create power!!

Have watched many golf teaching idea's and viewed the positive comments that follow via RUclips. I have to say this is the one for everyone,so forget all the other methods you have tried and give this a good go.Not only will you improve using this relaxed method,you are not putting pressure on your body to swing the handle so back problems in the past.Try with a neutral grip because your hands are more relaxed and if you need to strengthen a little.

My first experience with golf was as a kid 11 and 12 years old with my grandfather.Im naturally left handed and I started learning with rt handed clubs.I never changed to lelf handed clubs and it feels perfectly natural to play rt handed.I do believe it was easier for me to learn to swing on a good plane because I don't over use my rt arm.Timing is everything .To get the club to quare up at the rt time in the swing takes some consistent practice . I primarily swing the club with my left hand dominate gripping with the last three fingers of the left hand.Grip pressure must be consistent through out the swing.The more relaxed the for arms and the joins in the hands the more centrifical force you can generate.Iv been playing off and on for over three decades .Iv had years when I played exstreamly well and a few years when I played bad.The years I played bad I wasnt doing what this teacher is trying to get across to the golfer thats trying to play the game better.Iv experimented with my rt arm and side and Iv found you can release the club with either.I couldn't tell much different trying to use my rt verses my left.I will say when I'm feeling I'm controlling the club with my left Iv played much better golf day in and day out.I had to practice alittle daily to get the timing down.Im actually playing my best golf now and I'm in my early 60s.Iv not lost any distance at all.I had some problems with my eyes wer I could not see the last several years so my heart just wasn't in it.I had surgery on both of them and now I can see as good as I could in my 20s.Golf has become fun again.this teacher is explaining something that took me along time to really under stand.I feel that my arms are slighty ahead in the golf swing when I'm driving the ball good.I feel this with all my clubs rather they are or not that's what I'm feeling.I under
Stand what he is teaching here.We cannot consistently play this game well or have a chance to play well if we do not have the knowledge and understanding .Be for I got to playing better after I started back trying to play the game again I really wasn't able to pull it all together until I worked on my alinement.If you are consistently tugging the ball left or hitting it out to the rt.you can't begin to fix that until you fix your alinement.The brain does some funny things to the swing Say if your always lineing up left and tugging the ball over there with your irons your brain is probably not going to let you swing at your target.It going to swing left.Anyone that has good balance and weight transfer through the ball can take the things this teacher is EXSPLAINING and play there best golf with out going to the range all the time.Afew minutes every day will do alot more than going to the range once a week to improve your game because it timing.A person that plays an instrument understands if he is trying to memorize a song he's going to work at it a few minutes every day.He is not going to practice the song for two hours once a week because he knows it evolves timing.The 15 or 20 mins every day is going to give the musician timing.The golf swing works the same way.

Thank you for improving the audio 😄of your videos. This series of simple drills is terrific. I saw an immediate improvement in my swing speed. These drills can be added to just about any golf "system" without contradicting that system. Some so-called tips or drills make your swing worse before it gets better. Not these drills. For those people who flip their wrists (who? me?), the split hand drill goes a long way to eliminating that speed leak. Thanks Andrew.

Question please, I have lost the use of the last 3 fingers of my lead hand so can no longer grip the club in an orthodox manner. HIn your teaching have you encountered this in your reaching career and if so, have you any suggestions so that I can keep playing?
I add that I am an octave durian golfer so physical limitations are an accepted golfing way of life but limited use of the lead hand is proving a real challenge. Currently busy with expediting with balancing the handle with the thumb and forefinger of thr lead hand (in my case left hand) and then trying to get the handle pivoting around the trail hand as dominant hand. Any suggestions?? Thank you

Hi Bill! Thank you so much for your kind words-it means a lot to me that you found the video helpful. I'm sorry to hear about the challenges you're facing with your lead hand, but I admire your determination to keep playing.
You're on the right track by focusing on balancing the handle with your thumb and forefinger and using your trail hand as the dominant force in your swing. I’d suggest experimenting with larger grips and lighter clubs, such as those from XXIO, (it’s worth the investment!) lightest possible is huge!
In addition to that, I recommend training by hitting balls with just your right arm. I've worked with a golfer who was paralyzed entirely down his left side after a stroke, and he was able to hit high draws using only his right arm-you’re already ahead of where he started! Keep experimenting and stay positive; I have no doubt you'll continue to enjoy the game.

How timely. 🙂 At 70, finally committing to overcoming "standing up/early release". So many psychological roadblocks to overcome. Had recently made to the point getting some balls heading in the right direction without noticeable hand/wrist/forearm manipulation, but with side tilt and without the head popping up. Permission to work the wrists this way is *so* welcomed! I *promise* I won't over-do it!
That left heel thing *may* help me get through this last roadblock of the "hip bump/left foot pressure/left knee bend" *followed* by the left hip up and back thing. The timing seems impossible.
Wondering now if maybe thinking of the left foot pressure thing might be via a different part of the foot and have it "married to" the following heel stomp. Wishful thinking? Misunderstanding that sequence?
Salient points, thank you! Try and stay out of the weeds if you can. The game is hard enough without too many swing thoughts. You know how that ends up on the golf course!
Having said that think of the transition as a smooth change in direction with your arms dropping as you front load. It’s like a dance! Feel the marriage between the two.
The biggest thing is NOT to ‘transition SPIN!’ Or, have a violent disruption from the top! It’s essential that you STALL the spin phase as you change direction.
Golf instructors are HELL BENT on getting golfers as open as possible at impact and it’s not helping the vast majority of golfers that early extend when trying to do this!
Simply keep your back to the target as LONG as possible when you change direction! Your arms will drop down in front of you perfectly.
There is of course timing which you mention in your comment. That part is/and will always be unavoidable! But once you start to feel the marriage between your arms and your body you can start to think less and feel more!

..at 11:16 coach demonstrates the forearm Xshape, if you use a baseball grip for a day and try to achieve the forearm X you’ll end up releasing properly, for me this was the most important pattern to build into my swing, everything else then needs to conform to this release, thanks coach A

A neutral/weak grip would be able to handle a more 'active' wrist thru impact - but someone with a stronger grip (3 knuckles, or more) would might suffer dispersion issues if the wrists are too active. As a strong grip player - I found I play my best golf when i have "quiet" hands thru impact.
A very salient point! Find the release pattern that works for you Salvatore!!! If you have a stronger grip you’re going to want to release your speed into lead wrist extension more than rotation!!
I work with a lot of elite golfers and almost ALL my high speed players with strong grips hit fades!! You need a slower (ROC) Rate of Closure - Put some thought into the type of shot shape that will SERVE your needs as a golfer!

Whoa - like accentuate the "hip bump" with the back still to the target? Could see how that might aid with getting my hands to start more "down" rather than the "towards the target line" that they'll do if not supervised. 🙂
This a a huge problem! You have to stall the spin phase in the downswing. 80%+ of golfers do not! They’re facing the ball too soon and then have to play catch up with the hands and arms through impact. Thanks for watching and get after it!

Really enjoyed this video and the drills. I have injuries to my wrist so struggle with full wrist flexing...e.g. I can only do press ups on my knuckles. Getting older as well so rotation becomes more limted resulting in loss of yardage. Any tips would be welcome.😊
Please don’t try and over flex your lead wrist! If you get a little steep trying to do this you can injure your wrist. If you missing right then simply strengthen your grip at address! Make sure the club isn’t to high in the lead palm. And allow your forearms to rotate “tension free”.
Don’t force your shoulders in the transition because you’ll be playing catch up later in the swing with your wrists. Allow the club head to work freely. So stronger grip, aim the face a little right (where you want the ball to start), align the body a little further right and play some little soft draws! Try the feet together drill to get a feel of swinging the club freely and go from there. I hope that helps!

A wonderful presentation,wish you were closer for a in person lesson.I am curious about your opinion as to what happens and when the bow in a golf shaft straightens during the swing and does it add head speed.Also is head droop a factor.
Hi Randolph, I haven’t done a ton of research on shaft dynamics to be honest. I have club fitters that handle that side of things for me.
My only advice there is to go as flexible as you can reasonably control! The right shaft will definitely add club head speed - If you haven’t been fitted then do so!! There’s nothing worse then a shaft that’s not optimally fit to your swing.

Excellent. 1 QUESTION. in your momentum "drill". How do you get past the ball to swing forward first? Stand up more? Or bend elbows? Or pull arms in from shoulders? If its just a drill, that is one thing. But if it is meant to be incorporated into a normal shot this becomes very important and an added difficulty to re-align to the ball in the downswing.

Schaun- great question! Set up to the ball normally and simply elevate your arms. Do NOT extend your upper body! (maintain your posture). Then swing the club forward and keep the arms elevated slightly above the ball as you swing to the top of your backswing.
It takes a little practice but you’ll re-establish your radius after a few tries! Start with a tee first (no ball), and then graduate to a ball on a tee! Hope that makes sense!?

Terrific video. I agreed with you right up to the fast twitch muscles in the wrists. To my view the wrists can act as a free hinge in the kinematic chain. They add speed because just like a (loose) leather thong in the old agricultural flails.

@@AndrewEmeryGolf Now that I think about it you are right in what you say for the swing you describe. One can imagine fast twitch fibres definitely are in play where there is a deliberate and very rapid squaring of the clubface aka the release. The swing I mention is more like what was in vogue in 1850-1910 when the hickory shafts were quite flexible and less responsive to being controlled by the hands. Like cracking a whip as some have described that old action.

Andrew, I am finding your verbal imagery to be really helpful. At around 15:10 you discuss the left heel, left knee, left quad pushing into the ground to create the "firm left side" that the right side can push against and fire and generate speed. Doing this while keeping the pelvis from moving closer to the ball is also key. Question: I feel (think) I have to get the arms moving down a fraction of a second before I crush the bug under my left heel sequence. Starting with the body rotation and then moving the arms will tend to throw the upper body out and over the top...I think?

I have the feel, mainly on driver, that I throw the clubhead towards the ball to start the downswing. Not start it with any lower body movement. But it's just a fraction of a second before the lower body moves.
The legs are 20percent of the power.20 percent of 250 is 50.250 pluss 50 is 300.He is teaching something that is absolutely correct .The legs do play a part in distance and so does the shoulders but unless you are doing exactly what he is teaching the legs and shoulders aren't going to help you get longer.

Colin - I talk about body dynamics at around 13mins. You likely need a more ‘supported’ release. IF you’re ‘rolling’ OR over (rotating) your forearms too much then you’ll have a problem. Anything can be overdone as you know.
Ideally you should keep both hands to the side of the club through impact. But if your grip is VERY strong then you should feel like your lead wrist is pointing up more as you release the club! I hope that help!

In the back swing if the right palm is facing downward why does there need to be any rotation on the way down. It should come down the way it went up. Or did I get it wrong?
The trail palm actually should feel like it’s facing up more at the top which keeps the club face more stable. It’s a good idea to feel like the trail palm is pointing down in the initial part of the backswing because so many golfers roll the club open early!
The forearms rotate in the backswing, this requires re-rotation on the way down in order to square the club face and of course engage angular momentum.

I admit I hate the concept of releasing the club, the golf club will release naturally because the club head is heavier than the grip end. As golfers we tend to fall into one of two camps: those that try to "assist" the release which usually ends up with flipping the club or rolling the wrists, and those who do the exact opposite and try and stop the release which usually ends up with a horrible chicken wing look in the follow through.
Andrew's drills are great as long as you approach them with the idea of letting the club do the work - don't try and assist it or restrict it

I’ve always felt that speed comes from a symphony of motions ‘throughout’ the body!The dynamic movement of the body, the swinging motion of the arms and of course the articulation of the wrists! This resonates with me. I'm 70 and haven't really played for 15 years. Was about a 10 HC, but now ... Had lumbar fusion about 2 years ago. Been trying some of these drills and feel they are pretty body friendly. The L to L drill really seems to create decent speed without trying to generate a lot of power with my back and also seems to help with rhythm. And combined with the feet together drill promotes solid contact.
Does your lower body movement increase for more distance.
If it’s used at the right time absolutely! But it should be noted that the gals on the LPGA have faster hip speed on average but hit the ball a great deal shorter than the guys on the PGA Tour! Food for thought! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻

The reason one would early extend or hump the ball come over the top or loose their balance is lack of sufficient pelvic tilt …
Conversely proper pelvic ingaging your glutes and hamstring ( leg bicepts ) reduces humping early extension and loss of body ballance … [ See Dr. Greg Rose work at online Titleist performance Institute T.P.I. ]

In my opinion the L to L drill and the split hands drill are the only way beginners should learn to swing the club. They should hit about a 1000 balls each with those 2 drills and even play that way on the course. If I had done that I wouldn't have wasted 4 years just trying to learn to get the ball into the air reliably when it's not on a tee. The top or skulled shot is the most frustrating shot there is in golf bar none - and these 2 drills eliminate that.

If you have any pain you should consult a Doctor. You’d could be gripping it too tight, you may also be very steep which can stress the wrists but you shouldn’t have wrist pain! Be well! ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

I think you're a great teacher and I really appreciate the balance as in "of course I'm not suggesting the body isn't involved", etc.
I'd like to relate a recent "ah ha" moment for me that fits well with your point (maybe others have / had the same problem I did) that we need to get rid of the tension in our hands, arms, and shoulders. We hear a lot about "a one-piece take away" where we maintain the triangle while turning our shoulders around the spine at the start of the backswing. Sure, technically that's good advice. However, one day I watched several PGA Tour swings that were already in slow motion, but I played them at 1/4 speed. It was then obvious that on every swing I watched it didn't take very long in the start of the backswing before the clubhead and shaft started to outpace the hands and arms, and also early on the arms started to outpace the shoulder turn (primarily I think because of lack of tension in the shoulder muscles and the ball and socket joint that connects the arms / shoulders to the body).
Of course we need to maintain good structure (spine angle, shoulder angle, weight within the foundation and not swaying, etc.) and we don't want to become on overcooked wet linguini noodle, but once I realized the subtle difference between what was really happening in the take-away vs. a rigid solid-steel triangle I was able to release the tension much better. I also realized I was standing a good half inch too far away from the ball at address because of all that stiff tension.
Thank you again for relating your emphasis points to other things happening in the overall swing. That is very helpful to me.
Edit: Don't mean to imply whipping the clubhead and shaft to the inside by the "outpacing" comment. Just allowing the weight of the clubhead to naturally start doing its thing early on (lack of tension in the wrists) while staying on plane. Some others like me might be so "literal" that my comment could be misinterpreted that way.
Very salient points! The backswing has a sequence, as does the downswing! Dragging the club away is a misconception - If you do that your shoulders will meet their destination to early, and of course the hands and arms will meet their destination too late!
Use the MOMENTUM DRILL to help you sequence your backswing. The club head has a lot further to travel to the top - so it needs to travel faster!! Get after it!

If gravity is giving speed the club weight must be important not the shaftflex
Flex is equally important because your speed through impact will influence the amount of force you place on the shaft. Too soft generally will increase spin and accuracy, too stiff will require too much work with low flight, low spinning shots.
It’s always a good idea to have a professional club fitting to find out what works best for you!

Les, I totally get it!! In the past few years coaches have been obsessed with stabilizing the club face and pacifying the hands. When 85% of golfers slice and struggle with distance ask yourself if that makes sense?!?
If you’re an elite golfer, phenomenal athlete of Tour Player that struggles with hooking the ball and controlling their (plentiful) distance then stabilizing the club face would be helpful right!

I like the message and ams dont use their hands very well but…..you’ll notice anytime somebody demonstrates how fast the hands are they demonstrate with a stick and not a driver……..Its a cheap parlor trick to get the message across not the reality.

If you have seen that new training aid called the GEM with the weight on the bottom of the club, it is designed to orient the club so the toe always point up. That's how the club moves with the top of the club always pointing up and your hands on either side of it.

My gosh, as you know - there are so many ways of releasing Jeffrey. Release patterns are all about match ups - grips of course dictate what release works best. I’ve never felt like one size fits ALL! When I’m on the lesson tee I’m obsessed with finding what works best for the individual that’s in front of me!
Having said that - The artistry is in the hands for sure, bend one from left to right around a tree and that left elbow is working up for sure. Low hook would be the opposite! A little hold off fade, a high draw, a stinger (cut) then (draw). It’s where imagination and feel/artistry meet! But I’m sure you agree - you need to build good fundamentals first.
