  • In todays lesson I talk about MAXIMIZING ARM SPEED so you can create MORE SPEED with LESS EFFORT!
    Long hitters create a lot more speed with their arms early in the transition while short hitters TRANSITION SPIN which means they tire their arms to their body and attempt to SPIN their bodies to more speed! This of course creates TENSION which slows the club head down!
    In this video I talk about how to marry the arms to the body to improve your swing sequence! I start with the THROW DRILL and then use a simple SPEED PROGRESSION DRILL. These drills allow the golfer to FEEL their arms swinging freely in the transition.
    If you keep your back to the target and GLIDE into your lead side as your arms drop you’re going to see a huge improvement in DISTANCE & CONTACT!!

    I have watched a "zillion" videos over the years and I have gleaned little nuggets from many, but these videos really fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle for rme.

    I’m now in my late 70’s and was taught golf by an old Pro over 60 yrs ago who was an ‘arm swinger’. He got me down to a single figure hcp but I foolishly followed the trend of the ‘body swingers’. Didn’t do my back or my swing any good. Many thanks for reminding me of the ‘arm swing’ - I hope to enjoy my golf again over a few more years.

      As we get older the body does a lousy job as a leader! Swing your arms freely and allow your body to naturally multiply that speed by sending that momentum to the finish of your swing!!

      That’s a non negotiable for integrating a new pattern. Full swing full speed after 10 minutes will not allow you to adhere a new skill. You gotta feel it!!

    Love your teaching style Andrew! A perfect balance between explanations and demonstration. This type of release is definitely what I've been searching for. My club pro has been trying to teach me to hit it longer by having a wider stance and more rotational speed, and it works great for him, but not so much for me.       Rotational body speed is wasted if it’s not married to the swinging motion of the arms and the articulation of the wrists! You’re left with a ton of effort, no more speed and a bad back!!

    I just subscribed, Andrew not only you're doing a great job in explaining how all those channels looking at PGA pro's swings pose an ambition level that is too high for the average golfer that is not as flexible anymore, but as a mechanical engineer I do really dig into your explanations/demos on swing mechanics. I consider myself pretty fluent in English, but for non-native speakers it's so valuable to explain something, and then immediately show how not to do it (e.g. shallowing the club the wrong way)

    Andrew, again spot on . As someone who got so tired of seeing my arms trailing my body at p6, I have been really working at getting my arms moving faster from the top. My thought right now is fast arms and hands and slow body. It does work.

    Hi Andrew I've played golf on and off for 30 odd years loads of lessons always been not a bad golfer (9) but frustrated at lack of power.
    I've watched 3 of your videos and learnt 30 years of frustration clarity your explanation is second to none.

      Hi Wayne, thank you for your comment. My goal has always been to counter the ‘one size fits all’ tour swing that is saturating the golf learning industry. I’m as aware as anyone of course that the body plays a significant role.
      But it’s important to understand that the vast majority of golfers lack education in their hands and arms! When a golfer relaxes their joints for the first time and starts swinging the club feely ‘through‘ the ball. The body very often responds dynamically and a marriage between the arms and the body soon follows!
      I’ve no doubt that you, alongside so many other subscribers to my channel are realizing that adopting a golf “swing” as opposed to a body “spin” is the way to go long term!

    like I always said, thanks a lot for all your help Andrew, with your tips the last 9 holes that I played I did 39 in a 36 stroke course, I mean +3, all pars, 1 bogey and 1 double bogey.     Would you have a video on the trail wrist in transition? I found my wrist is my internal move on downswing which caused a pull/pull hook at impact and face to path angle left with club path and have been working on "feeling" of wrist roll under but would like your guidance if you have on trail wrist move on downswing please sir 😊

    Do you find as you approach impact and the butt end it facing you can that have a tendency to not flush it. It may be due to not getting the shaft lean or glide of the body. Your thoughts. Thanks for the video.

      The degree of trail wrist extension @ impact will vary depending on the golfers grip! Release patterns for sure are not a one size fits all! But I think it’s worth noting that transferring trail wrist extension to flexion through the ball transfers significant energy to the club head!! All tour players do this. Chips, pitches and of course putts require a more ‘supported’ release pattern - maintaining trail wrist extension past the collision point.

    I have been trying to get more clubhead speed for the past year without much success. I am going to work with your lesson and see if I get better results. I am struggling to get my ball speed with a driver past 150mph. I am strong and flexible and have felt frustrated with that I can't increase it to even 155mph. I have been having lessons for a year, and although my swing is smoother and I am hitting the ball straighter, I can't get any more than 230 yards carry with my driver. I know that I have more in the tank. I am going to work with your instructions. Thanks.

    Great video Andrew…I have a question on somewhat “passive arms” vs. active arms. Are you pulling your arms down aggressively as you start the downswing/transition or are you just going with the momentum of the weight of the club and letting the club almost fall? I have a problem when I try to aggressively pull down..like a DeChambeau does, and my swing gets out of whack with mis-hits (pulls and fat shots) and face impact issues. What effort feel with your arms are you feeling in transition?

      Hi Jim, great question! I think most golfers conflate “pulling” with effort!! That effort usually adheres the arms to the shoulders through tension, leading to transition spins. The trick is to keep the arms relaxed and the hips and shoulders closed in transition. Some golfers gravity feed the club while others “work” the club more with their arms.       @@AndrewEmeryGolf I feel like I am more pulling the club down , but I believe that is causing me to open/spin my shoulders….but when I feel like they are passive, I lose about a club length in distance. I’m a 9 hcp and am 59 y.o, my 8i goes about 150yrds and my driver carries about 240yrds (club head speed avg 96mph).I know there is more distance in my swing, I just can’t access it. I can get my hybrids 100-105 mph….something is amiss with the swing.

    I have enjoyed your vidoes. I used to be a body swinger and would just fire my hips and the arms came along for the ride. And I was pretty good at it. Mid single digit handicap. But I am now apporaching 70 years old and my body just does not work that way anymore. So I have altered my swing to be more arms first. It is taking time but I am getting it. My question is related to a feel. Is there any difference between a feeling of pulling down with the hands and arms or more of a pushing motion using the right shoulder (right handed golfer)? For me right now, i like the feelilng of replacing my left shoulder with the right shoulder. I literally feel like I am thowing my right shoulder at the ball. I don't even think of my hips any more. As long as I keep my spine angle and don't early extend, it seems to work farily well. Still getting used to it.

      Feels are all relative! I wouldn’t typically recommend throwing your right shoulder at the ball because it could encourage a transition spin and steep AOA. However IF firing the trail shoulder is helping you hit it better and further than you should keep doing it!!
      The longer I coach the less I’m surprised with how different feels work for different people! The key is finding what works for YOU!

    Andrew, when do you start to rotate the forearms or switch directions with the club? Is that something we need to practice with each club depending the length?

      This is a great question! Most golfers do not rotate their forearms soon enough as they approach impact. Rather, they drag the handle which leaves the face open and requires a rapid (ROC) Rate of Closure at the ball! I would suggest a gradual rotation as you approach waist high at constant rate through the ball! For the Driver I suggest that you start rotating even earlier!!

      Hi Chris! Thanks for the comment. I believe that most golfers would be well suited to a single plane swing which simply put means that the lead arm at the top remains parallel to the shaft plane at address.
      I like to see more “depth” as opposed to elevating the lead arm “above” the plane line and then dropping under it in the transition which you see in a two plane swing!
      Having said that - it’s important to note that the lead arm still has to work UP across the chest in the backswing - And, down the chest in the transition, even for a single plane swing!
      In my opinion - Lowering the arms as opposed to shallowing with the wrists or body keeps the club as close to a single plane as possible!!

      What an awesome question!! All depends on the level of golfer! If the wrists need educating then, yes! The artistry lives in the wrists so it’s immensely important.
      Elite golfers feel the club head and adjust release patterns with their wrists to hit different windows with their ball flights. Of course, hanging on and being tight or “controlling” with them is not what you want! You want to feel the release slowly to start and then sling it by letting go as you build confidence! Get after it!

    I am an avid 77 year-old golfer who has had to put my play on hold because of some horrid lumbar spine issues. Had been trying to play a modern body rotational swing. Too much side bend and lower body torque has done me in. I am relatively pain free, but have weakness in the left leg and cannot put much weight into it. I think their can be a hands and arms swing with the right leg being the center point, and the left leg only used for balance. I am too old to take up playing left handed. What do you suggest?

      Play the ball back in your stance and do just that!! You have to find what works best for YOU! The modern swing requires tremendous mobility and places significant stress on the joints in the hips and lower back! It’s not a swing for life that’s for sure!     When u “drop” ur arms what muscles are u using? Or are the arms literally completely limp when dropping the arms?

      I wouldn't say limp. Keep the pressure a 5 out of 10.

      The key is keeping an even tension in the arms as you change direction. If you go completely limp you’ll lose structure and grip integrity! The arms want to shallow but most golfers transition spin because they get tight! Thanks for the comment!

      There's a really good 4 part video from the AMG / Gears guys on RUclips called "Blazing Arm Speed" (it's the Internet... so marketing = hype words....whatever). Anyway, it breaks down what you really need to do with your trail arm to create the most speed earlt (as Andrew states). Andrew does an excellent job explaining and showing. The AMG guys will give you even more detail on this one key move. For me, exending/releasing the trail right arm AS IF I AM CLEARING TO A SPOT 3 FEET BEHIND THE ACTUAL BALL has been transformational. Esp in my iron game. Also, check out the words "Malaska release" to understand this in more details. Also amazing to think that the club needs to TIP OUTWARD to create natural speed in the downswing. I never knew this. Think "hands in / club head out and down as you swing from the top". Amazing results. Great videos from Andrew, AMG guys and Mike Malaska here explaining all of this IN LINE WITH what Andrew teaches. Awesome to see the same thing explained multiple ways as something might resonate more with the way each of us processes information.

      @@AndrewEmeryGolf if your a big guy like koepka and dont need distance learn to hit a high fade,if your smaller or a female learn to hit a draw.Hit buckets withnyour right hand only in to out exagerated.I am 62 hit my driver approx 265 and my 9 iron 140 only 5 ft 8 170 lb.You might need to do this for months to learn the correct feel.

      @@briggs13aI’m a big guy and can hit the ball a long way even though my body is breaking down. Thank you genetics. I’ve never chased a fade my swing and athletic personality has always hit a draw. I can work the ball both ways but my stock shot is a draw. I play to a +2 and have had coaches try to force me into a fade but I just couldn’t do it.
