I still remember the first time I listened to this tune, the day I bought the CD...I knew some other songs like One and Harvester of Sorrow from AJFA but this one was unknown to me until then...then came this part and something happened inside me I can't describe...I was alone in my room and just wanted to scream like 'Oh my God!!!' such climax this song proportionates... I keep Lars in my heart as a drum teacher, influence and musician, although I totally quit listen to Metallica from Reload on.
DividedHalo8426 a lot of James solo riffs are pretty sick on this album. One super simple but very under appreciated riff is how heavy the one he plays in the first half of the Blackened solo. Just adds so much. He is the riff master after all
Just like Josh Steffen said in the comment that the hardest part was to remember all the fills and random strokes, the same Lars Ulrich said so in an interview. He doesn't really want to do such things anymore, because the portfolio of songs just keeps getting bigger and he is only getting older. So playing simpler stuff is not only physically easier for long live performances but it reduces the brain load to remember all the "random strokes" and accentuations. He added that he likes to go with gut feeling more now. And I fully understand this approach, even though it breaks my Metallica fan heart a bit.
It goes into a 6/4 but I was always expecting straight 4/4 and got so thrown off when the guitars came in. It's not confusing for me now but it sure was
+Nicole S I love how this guy nails the drum fill before that middle gallopy riff and Lars failed it onstage which resulted quite possibly the worst drum fill iv'e ever heard
I agree! Lars was one of my studies around age 11/12,I walked 3 1/2 miles to buy k em all! He got paid, got lazy! Go see Priest or testament good show,GUARANTEED!
@@yeetfeet1878 Nope. Absolutely NOT. People can make mistakes, but NO ONE makes as much mistakes as lars. At least since they came bavk he has been spot on...
4:00 say what you want about Lars but that’s might be my favorite Metallica moment ever Lars was a beast shame he didn’t keep playing like he did in justice
I’ve been drumming in a band for about 4 years, from no formal lessons but learned how to keep a beat from Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Metallica has always been a band in my radar, and I had normally known them for being shred masters, but I’ve only recently begun to realize how unique of a style Lars has. It is really, REALLY, fucking hard to learn a Metallica song on drums. But you, Josh, tear this shit UP. Power to you man.
Love your vids dude (specifically the Metallica covers). Puts a smile on my face each time I watch one, and you really nail the parts - so good. As a fellow drummer, I can appreciate how much work goes into getting all of the intricacies learned and memorized (for each specific song) and then being able to play them back in one take as well as you do. Great work dude :)
Oh Josh is a genius and yes he nailed that drum part at 4:01 spot on but that just goes to show you what a genius Lars was back then to come up with those fills you can knock anything you want about him today I don't think he cares he doesn't have to care but it's still iconic to this day and not easy to do
I do a few system songs. Look for a collab I did with a buddy of mine. Look up Achokarlos and find Toxicity. That's pretty cool. Have you seen my cover of Shortest Straw? I'm 30 and grew up listening to Metallica, and was a big reason why I started playing drums in the first place.
Josh, man I've seen many of your videos but this to me is the tightest!! You cannot squeeze a needle in there!! I love the fills, specially the cool one at 4:00, but what I love most is your hi hat hand!!! I play gutar but I spend more time watching your videos than LambChoppers!! And I love that guy. Awesome dude, thanks!!!
You killed it Josh! That's my favorite song on the Justice album. I love that drum part at the very last 10 secs of the song, freaking awesome! And of course you nailed it! 👍
Fill at 4:03 perfect bad ass..what is your favorite metallica song? To play or listen to.... And what is his most hardest to play/ complicated.. I know this is an old vid lemme know tho please! I love your lars impression vids to you know his style so well even down to the China hits "holy lars" is the best one....thanks for hours of entertainment Josh!
Damn this is the most perfect drum cover of a song i´ve ever seen on the youtube! and i´ve been watching drum covers of all kinds of songs for several years. Congratulations and thanks for uploading those videos, will check out the rest of your channel.
My favorite/best album..Regarding Lars-this is his most aggressive drumming ..He's a f**kin beast on this ..Blows my mind-album is soo tight ! That's why sick ass drummers like Josh cover it \m/
dude I'm so impressed with your attention to detail, I for one no how difficult that song is! I dig how you look at the camera wen you nail a choP! You kick ass!!!!!!
liking before i watch!! you’re too good seen you’re other vids i love this album and you nail it! my favourite drums and beat ever on an album. in all genres of music
I saw Metallica do this in England a few years ago when Rob was still fairly new to the band but they messed up and stopped at some point after the first chorus. James came back down to the mic and admitted they perhaps should have rehearsed it first! It all seemed pretty funny like it wasn't part of the set list but they gave it a go! The drumming on this track might just be Lars' finest. Really great job dude
so good! im a huge Metallica fan and i dont see any flaws in that. looking forward to you trying some more metallica and try some stuff off death magnetic judis kiss is a great dum song have fun with it
James always did a general drum track on his Foster guitar demos, so when compiling the songs Lars could easily find the off beats and stuff, and play off the existing stock beat
Showoff. I have a hard enough time playing this song without the extras. Love it man. This and Shortest Straw are the best two songs on the best album in my opinion. We must be about the same age, cause you seem to be a Metallihead like me. I don't know a whole lot of younger dudes that dig their old stuff like I do. Anyways, great stuff brother. Would love to see some Suicidal, Sevendust, and System.
Those fills toward the end are amazing, If Lars only had a tutor during the Justic recording he could have made these song just a little bit sweeter. This album is in my top 5 of all time. But its the little things that add so much. I know those are your own snacks because I've listened to this album 1439 times. \m/
Great Scott, man. That was,GREAT! Makes me wanna go buy a pack of string for the plank, tune that sucker up to metallica standads and play along with this.
I mean, why should he? A single bass Bass drum with a double-pedal serves basically the same purpose... The only good reason to add another one is so you can maybe tune it differently, which would destroy the function of double-bass... The only good setup I could think of are one "main" Bass-Drum with a single-foot double-pedal (yep those exist) and one tuned differently with a single pedal... Other than that, 2 bass drums are practically useless...
This proves that Lars is an amazing composer. The whole And justice for all album is full of great druming.
+Enrique M. Agreed
And very unique too. I love it!!!
Its my all time favorite album and their best ever made imo
@@MrRobcix1 Same
Great composer and at one time a great drummer....pro tools ruined Lars' playing...but his writing ability was always top notch.
Okay, Lars is such a genius. The fill at 4:00 is perfect. Could be the best moment in any song. The build up.. the way it's written... I love it.
A beast through the 80s and 90s , thousands of 3-hour concerts playing as hard as he did, legend I reckon.
Unfortunately he himself can't play it XD
@@fabiantomac1772Look at the performance of this song in Finland on May 28th 2014.

Simple. Just going off beat then back on. I love the way it sounds too.
5:10 my favorite riff in this song, I don’t know why, it just sounds so good
i came here only for the 4:03 fill. Fuckin ace man!
Perfectly played! As much flack as Lars gets nowadays, those drum patterns are still amazing. So weird and unorthodox yet very cool :)
Agreed!
Jasper Manning that's why Lars is awesome
Always thought that Lars is actually damn good. Have no idea why he gets so much hell.

Because hrs lost a lot of the ability he once had. Listen to him then them listen to him now. You'll see a big difference.
