- This week's Big 4 Drum Cover is DAMAGE, INC. by the mighty Metallica!
1986! What a great year!! A lot of people will hate on '80's music. No way! The 80's produced some of the greatest Metal bands on the planet!
When Master of Puppets dropped in March '86, the world was treated to one of the greatest Metal records of all time! MOP! Changed my life!
I'm so fortunate I got to see them perform live in the Summer of '86 (opening for Ozzy) with the late great Cliff Burton.
One of the greatest pieces of Metallica's music in my opinion is the intro to DAMAGE. So it was only appropriate that I pay tribute to the man who was such a huge contribution and large part of Metallica's sound.
RIP Cliff. Never forgotten...

Although Lars can't play it this well anymore it makes you realize he created some amazing drum tracks. Love the intro tribute. Great cover.
Lars never actually played what you just saw.
@@user-ll9bq8hv3sliterally go watch them play this in footage from the Damaged Justice tour. He does this but faster.
Lars still kills it with song.
@@user-ll9bq8hv3s brother, you think the drums just magically appear on all of metallicas albums?💀😂😂
@@user-ll9bq8hv3sYeah he definitely did. Master of Puppets was the last album to actually feature his live drumming in one take on tape. It was only during Justice, St Anger, Death Magnetic, and Hardwired that all his stuff was sadly spliced. Not sure why people are making it up as if it was always edited and he will forever be awful but yeah
That breakdown/bridge from 3:13 through 4:53 is one of the underrated masterpieces to this day, every bit of those arrangements through there are pure gold.
Underrated by who?🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's one of the most loved songs in metal, what the hell are you talking about?
@@Hell-Awaits people talk about Master of Puppets, Battery, Blackened, etc. Damage Inc gets overlooked sometimes.
Yeah, and double bass verse too
Kirk wrote that riff.
@@Hell-Awaits true, is not underrated at all, the whole metalcore scene was based on that breakdown.
The photo slides at the beginning of the video are really moving, great tribute 🤘🥁🤘
I thumbed on that as soon as I saw it.
Excellent drumming!!
Lars was a fantastic composer👍🏼
@Ted's Exotic Cacti nope .
"Was" is the key word
still is numbnuts!!
@@JayCord00
Yes.
@@JayCord00 So I take it I won't see you at the shows in August then?
After 20 years of metal drumming, I wish I could play with at least half of the mastery of this man. That wasn't a cover, that was a studio take.
Dude you just killed my will for playing drums
Oh man. What a drummer. Also lefty like me. Was a joy to watch. Cliff'em all!
1:54 A little wink to Dave Lombardo on War Ensemble Live there with the bell! Great drumming of course!
I heard a band called Tankard do this song on a compilation album and the drummer did that bell at that exact same spot. That's who i thought of. Pretty good cover btw. You should check it out.
Ahhh...1986. Puppets forever changed my life at 14!
Stellar job, Jon!!!
Beautiful tribute to Cliff \m/
Ill never forget the day I first heard of you... Soundwave Australia 2013.. I thought who the hell is this guy never heard of him.... then you filled in for Anthrax and Slayer.. well needless to say I never forgot who you were after that... absolutely killed it!!! Both sets of two killer heavyweights.. you are the boss!!!!
I heard the entire show from an AUD tape. I was floored bc I couldn't believe the attack on the drums. Dette made that show.!
That double bass run during the last of the song gets my heart pumping every time I hear it no matter who plays it!!
4:52 - The double bass kicking in is just glorious...
Rest in peace Cliff, you fucking Legend on the bass. Nice tribute, Jon! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
That section coming out of the solo at 4:35 is so cool.
The transition back into the verse is so down to business
Damn. Jon has more power in his right drumstick than I have in my whole drumkit... I love that "pling" at 1:51
That was unbelievable... Jon has a great sense of humor to boot.
All time favorite Metallica song!! Thanks Jon!
John Dette is the perfect thrash drummer! So powerfull!!!
The last frame of the video, shows what is like to be a true fan of a band ,the happiness of playing drums and what metal music gives to us.
Great drumming as always!
Breathless....it's the most faithful and genuine version of the piece....nice work Jon....the memory of Cliff is admirable....Fire, Power and Fury 🔥🔥🔥💪💪💪🔝🔝🔝
Incredible playing!! What a great tribute to Cliff 🙏
That intro is mind blowing. Hauntingly good. 🤘
It was 6 weeks before their first show in Tokyo, 1986, I was a high school kid and had the ticket, listening to the only heavy metal program of Japanese radio those days, starting at 3am every Saturday, the DJ of the show started telling us that Cliff was killed by an accident. Metallica decided to visit Tokyo with a new bass player and we all appreciated it.
Holy!!!! Molly!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
R.i.p. Cliff!! ❤❤
This track is absolute killer and your performance was flawless!! 🔥🔥🔥
AWESOME drumming! Cliff is very happy with this tribute!
WOW! 🚀
So damn tight!!! Love the bell hit in the intro before it really kicks in!
Diggin all your covers ! All of your videos are Awesome!🔥🤘👍
@1:54 Love the way you rang the dinner bell..lol or maybe …”and here we go at the Garden, round 1!”
I love all in this video. Thanks so much
Ting! Lol Flawless, hard hittin, awesome! Dude didn't even break a sweat!
The last ride hit was killer. :D
All the Lars haters tend to forget he composed and played some of if not the most iconic and awesome drum tracks in Metal History!
Lars IS AWESOME!!
Great job.
Awesome, having a lot of fun
1:54 *ting* - trying to keep a serious face, hahaha brilliant!
Best years of my life , he was driving crushing power of Metallica. Never Forgotten
Absolutely amazing....
Wicked! Love the "ding" on the ride before the first verse and at the end, and thanks for the montage photos of Cliff.
as always great #drum performance by #johndette and as always said, John deserves to be in a huge band as a permanent #drummer hope 2023 it´s yours John #kickass
Love seeing a fellow lefty drummer!
That little bell ring at the beginning was funny😂
Sup, Jon. My very first concert was Slayer (with you on drums) at the Whisky a Go Go in 1996 when I was 14 years old. I was bummed when Bostaph came back because you were definitely the better drummer. My rehearsal studio is Slayer's old room, over on Parker St. in the city of Orange. Anyway, that's about as solid as it gets for a drum cover. Nice that you've honored Lars' parts. As much shit as I've talked on his drumming skills and issues over many years, he was decent in his prime. Legends of that generation like Lombardo, Hoglan, Menza technically obliterate him, but Lars had a distinct that style was perfect for James. His drum parts were very well-written to suit the music and was an incredibly energetic and passionate showman on stage. He also had one of the most iconic drumkits - his black and white Tama Granstar/Artstar II Justice kit. Keep the drum covers coming.
Yes I agree! But wasTama Art-Star Light Blue from "Justice Tour" & White Kit in "Black Tour" 😎
You forgot to mention Benante with the other drummers
,..U choose the best ones.. Figth & Damage,..for me ,..always wanna see this ones played like this. thankz ..and U are the best ,..incredible great,.. Would like to ear Lars on this,..for sure he must feel proud and happy like me to watch this. Gracias Jon ...Saludos from Valparaiso,. Chile. hope U do some more of this ,..feels really really great to watch & hear your playing.
Well done.
I was there, the very last night that Cliff ever played. Will never forget.
What a performance Jon.fu*****great!
Excellent job Jon my friend 👍🎼🥁🎼👍🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍!!!!
Fucking spot on! First we had Dave Lombardo on Battery, now we have you on Damage Inc. Hell yeah!
You sir, are a Metal Drummer! Very well done!
Thank you, man. Greetings from Colombia
Cliff 'em all!!!!
that ending with full DB is so fcking awesome!!! it makes you get speed tickets!
It's great!!!!!!!!! Excellent, man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*Ding....* Loved it!
Heard Kerry King said this is the metallica song he wish he wrote
Wow just wow awesome
Just discovered the channel. great to see another lefty! Excellent job brother
Beautiful Jon, R.I.P Cliff
That half time break down is killer.
MOP is such a great record.
Amazing as always! Had fun working on this one
this is awesome, a good drummer covering a bad drummer's song. love it!
SUPERB!!!!
The initial riff is divided in two tempo sections, after the fill (uneven) it goes from a downbeat to an upbeat rhytm, and snare and pedal are inverted. This doesn't happen here. BTW great cover, i just wanted to see if anyone else liked this figure in the original drumming, that was super cool to me.
El hombre es una bestia en Bata,,..version fiel . gracias Jon
Just Awesome 🤘🤘
Thank you John…amazing drumming as always…
Flawless!
One of things that makes a great drummer is stage presence and the amount of energy given off by the performer. Not many drummers can demonstrate this from behind the kit. You, sir, are amazing. I watch one of your covers or videos every day just to watch you have so much fun behind the kit.
My fellow left handed drummer in the house!!!!
Great job! Lots of hard work went into that no doubt
Jon you are a beast awsome bro🤘🤘🙏
Awesome! Great Cover and Sick Kit!! Id love to see that in a right handed Config!! Tight playing !!
On spot👌
amazing,cheers keep them coming
Damn, that is brutal!!!!!!
Awesome!
Great job, Jon Dette is an awesome drummer! Good to see he stayed in shape and in the gym also as he said he would. It's easy to gain unwanted weight in your 40s and 50s!
Damn this song is sick, fucken love Damage Inc. Your playing was sick too love the enthusiasm.
Awesome cover ,my friend...!!
Stay thrasher!! My admiration from Seville (Spain).
🧔🏻👍🏻🇪🇦
🥁
Absolutely killer!
Good job man! Excellent timing and feel....Too many drummers out there who just don't get the feel/groove part of it
So well said! Without the groove or swing its just.......it loses its heart and soul
Ufff... thank U 4 this my man... so precise... so clean and respectful... not even Aquiles play it so well... congrats & have your like with my respect.
Que falta de respeto!
Ni punto de comparación con Aquiles Priester !! 😂😂😂😂
I love the ding on the Ride Cymbal before the first verse kicks in, and at the end of the song. Don't know how Lars would feel about that though.
the best metal album of all time.simple.dude i saw you with slayer in 96
I personally would have liked to seen this guy stay with Slayer back in the day. I know my drummer in my band was always talking about this "leftie" that was drumming for Slayer and I was like, "Bullshit" . But he kept telling me to check this dude out. So I watched a video from 96 of "Gemini" with Dette on drums. It was fucking killer. Great fucking drummer.
The guitar tone is just fkn crushing on Damage INC. Jon is crushing this cover. Rawk🤟
Nailed it!
the like button went automatic since your intro at your video...much love brother
Well done Jon!!!!!
Greetings from Greece
This sounds amazing!!
Keep 'em comin'🤘🏿
Phuckin killed bro!
Was amazed at your left handed style!
007
Nailed, as usual! Great drumming and great tribute, have a brilliant 2023 Jon, you deserve it 🤟🏻
Oooooh boy! I love it, brings a lot of memories to my mind. Man, you are damn impressive and have played pretty much on every of my favourite thrash bands, once you are done with The Big Four I would like to hear some Testament. Correct me if I am wrong, but you did the Live At The Fillmore with Testament on that tour? Dog Faced Gods would be really cool to see!
this man went tf off
John Dette folks. Mama - there goes that man again. 🤘🏻
Awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AWWWESOOOMEEEEEEE...
Outstanding performance! Mr. Dette you are nothing short from marvelous!!!
Killer🔥🔥🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿tight n power
