Unrealistic, you can clearly hear the bass. If this truly were on AJFA, there wouldn't be any, yet it still does sound accurate and I love it.
I won’t even listen to the studio version of Justice anymore. I listen to the ones with the bass turned up.

There wouldn't be any bass. This is St. Anger, and Jason had already fokking left the band!
Imagine if they came up with this just right before the numetal era. They would have pioneered it.
In all fairness, they did start to record St. Anger in '01 while numetal was in its infancy so in theory I guess you could call them a pioneer similar to when they did load/reload just as the grunge movement started to take off in the early to mid 90s.
Evolution in infancy
Nu metal wasn't in its infancy in '01 LOL. @@theblackenedone1366 RATM, Korn, and even Primus were creating the sound in the late 80's and early 90's. Coal Chamber was '97, and it is around that time when some fool came up with the term "nu metal". In '01 the fad of the genre was already dying. People were moving on to metalcore.

Never will I ever understand what people see as being Nu Metal on this album and especially this track.
If anything it draws way way more from sludge than anything (not a surprise given that this is when James was spending quite some time with Pepper from Corrosion of Conformity).
Think about it, what's Nu Metal about this album? The riffs are repeated ad nauseam, the production is way dirtier than Nu Metal usually was, the songs are extremelly long with pursposely little variations, there's no intervention of any single hip hop or industrial elements, no unorthodx instrument, the high gain is muddy and bassy and the infamous drum snare has no correlations at all to the Nu Metal polished sound.
This is pretty much sludge in a nutshell. Even the darker themes in lyrics fit more to that style.
The only reasons why people tagged it as "nu metal" is because it was the "in" thing at that moment and because there was downtuning and no solo. But even on the downtuning aspect, it's not the 7 strings of Korn and it's not like other styles of metal did go in that territory outside of Nu metal. To me, it's the marketing team that failed at broadcasting this album for what it really was.

If this was released around 1994, right after their Live Shit: Binge & Purge album and it sounded like this? They would have been gods of metal as far as status. Back when they were still at their prime.

Back in the day , I used to pray that Metallica would re-release St. Anger with proper snare sound and Justice with bass. I don't pray for it anymore because i got it thanks to talented fans like Alex Murphy.

Godsmack has always been a copycat of the "bad" era of Metallica. That's the hilarious part. Metallica gets all the critcism, but Godsmack gets generally neutral feedback.

@@cobrakai9969 I feel like a lot of it has to do mainly with the principal of the sound, not the actual sound or song structure itself. Like Metallica had cemented themselves as this great, founding member of thrash, a very specific sound. But when they changed what they sounded like and what music they were making, is when the fans started hating it and not really giving the music a chance to show its value. That's where Godsmack comes in; they make pretty good music, and from what I've heard, they've kept a relatively constant sound.

The mix and voice all sound fantastic, I do think the structure of the riffs doesn't lend too well to the song being more interesting, but I definitely think one could tweak the riffs to make them more Metallica esque for the And Justice time.

Let's just all be honest with each other for a second. Was St. Anger really that bad of an album? I mean, I didn't like the snare drum in it, but they made the no solo thing work somehow, in my opinion. I liked the album. I won't listen to it every day, but it's ok.

these could easily be great nu metal, post grunge songs. The key element was missing, a syncopated drums and moving off 4/4s timing signatures. If by any chance real nu metal bands did covers of these I´m sure the arrangements will gravitate towards it.
