A consistent toss into the right location is the basis for a great serve.
If your toss is inconsistent, then you have no chance of developing a great serve!
A key factor on the toss is where you look while you toss the ball up.
In this video OTI Instructor Nadim Naser shows you a key aspect of this that is rarely discussed and he also shares his toss target drill with you that has helped many players!

On a correct toss where should the ball land on the court if I do not swing?

Interesting that I never thought of this, just unconsciously followed the ball up. Thanks!

But weight transfer happens from back to front during loading, so does not rthym and dynamics changes with rocking motion ???

Years back I had a coach stand behind me while I practiced my serve because sometimes I would chase after an errant toss. If he saw an ' off toss ' , before I started swinging, he would say " No ". It helped.

Ray Jenkins thanks for your input. Yes, some students do indeed like this method. Others however can’t seem to stop in time. Looking up before throwing the ball “there” is one way I find many students like because it calms them down during the toss motion.

This made me laugh... if it's not a good toss don't hit it... this is rec tennis the majority of players have horrible tosses. Should they work on practicing it ? Yes... do they most don't..., good tip though don't follow the ball. I've always been taught visualize where you want to the ball to land in the box.

Thanks Nadim really useful suggestion! I have Florian's service course, it's great and no doubt there are many aspects to a good serve. BUT ... to FM's point in his comments, assuming you have a decent "throwing" motion and an OK rhythm to your serve, I do think the toss placement and keeping your eye on it the whole time (i.e. not looking to where you want it to go right before hitting it) is the key "missing link". I know my toss is the bane of my serve, so I will try to really focus on the toss placement and keeping my head up during the entire swing. I tried that today in my clinic and when I did my serve was much improved, when my concentration and toss wavered ... shank city lol. As far as Nadim's suggestion, he's got me thinking of something I've tried before but think I will do again, get a bucket, put it where the ideal placement of the toss should drop, and toss a number of balls while in a service stance, and see if both the height of the ball looks right, and the balls drop into the bucket. After that, proceed to Nadim's most excellent drill. :)

Okay, so I watched the video and went straight to the courts to try this out. WOW!! All I can say is what a difference in my serve consistency as a result of NOT, absolutely NOT trying to hit a badly placed toss. I hit 50 serves before my tennis practice. During practice games immediately following, I swung at only one bad toss, and then I realized - Oh, I forgot and had lapsed back to my old technique. That was the last of my old toss technique and the beginning of much improved serve consistency. Thank YOU!!

Thanks Nadim for such a great tip. It is a game changer and works immediately about 90+ % of the time. Never expected such effective and rapid success. Cam

This is one of the very few things I've managed to figure out for myself and so this video makes absolutely perfect sense to me. I have also found that it improves my toss accuracy, for some reason that I don't understand. Before I had this idea, like everyone else, I'd follow the ball up with my eyes and the toss was all over the place, even when I knew to keep my tossing arm straight. But when I tried looking up to the target area first, my toss consistency improved.

I have started making sure I clearly see my tossing hand release the ball, which indicates I am looking up early.

The toss has always been a struggle. You mentioned tossing the ball too far in front of you, but my problem is tossing often over my head. Any tips for a chronic bad tosser?

@@OnlineTennisInstruction Any tips to releasing ball earlier? Muscle memory works against me, and even when I concentrate on an early ball release, still often releasing late. Thanks, Jason

Jason Evans what may also help is thinking of slowing the toss motion down and making your arm “travel” all the way up; in other words, completing the toss motion...I’ll be positing more toss videos in the future. I’m sure if you look through our videos here on our channel, you’ll see several more toss related videos you could use to help you with your toss. Best wishes
