Always wanted to know how exactly to hold the tennis ball for the service toss but were never sure?
One of the questions that I receive often is to explain how exactly one needs to hold a ball for the serve toss.
So recorded a video for you with some close ups so that you'll see exactly how I place the ball in the hand and how I keep it steady.
You'll also see two drills that help you calm down the hand as it's the erratic hand (and fingers) movements during the toss that cause inaccuracy.
And finally, I also share an idea of an integrated toss and how the tossing motion is initiated with body movements and not with an isolated arm movement.

What I can really take away from all tennis instructions on the Internet is to try and do things how it feels more natural to you and your body. I followed a course by Agassi on Udemy and he was advocating for holding the ball between your finger tips in order to avoid rolling the ball with your palm when you're tossing, thus adding unncessary spin or inconsistent placement. Now, I found Tomas's way more natural to me, rather than Agassi's, we can't say this way or that way is the only way to hold a tennis ball in order to have a consistent ball toss. I would recommend taking time to figure out what works best for YOU and practice, practice and more practice.

I’ve never commented on a video before, but had to after this video completely fixed my very very broken ball toss. I was having to catch my toss probably 4-5 times per service game and often hit terrible tosses which stressed my back and took mph and placement off my serve. Tried this technique last night and went an entire set without catching one toss. I’m a baseball player naturally and was gripping the ball with my fingers which caused my wrist and figures to have a very wild and inconsistent toss. I tried other techniques from other videos and nothing worked until I found this. Simple and intuitive explanation of the toss and where the failure points of players tosses are. Thank you!

Hi Tomas. Another great video. Thank you.
May I add 3 things which I use with my students regarding the toss?
    1. Keep your tossing arm straight all the way.
I use a ‘rail’ strapped across the elbow to prevent the arm to bend.
    2. Release the toss after you are finished shifting the body weight to the back foot.
    3. Hugely important!
LIFT THE HEAD and lock your eyes upwards before the ball is released.
It’s hard to control the toss when you wobble your head upwards at the same time.
You did all this perfectly, but it wasn’t mentioned.
You were giving so much good advice, I guess you couldn’t fit everything in.
    All the best, brother.

The toss is so important in order to have an effective serve. It all starts with a consistent toss. Until I saw this video I was never sure how to hold the ball & had a lot of inconsistency with my toss.. Most videos deal with the toss and where to place it but neglect to specify how to hold and release the ball, which is the most important first ingredient to a consistent serve. The proper technique is detailed very well in this video.

I use the term placement instead of toss. You place the ball in the optimum position to hit the serve. The service is the only shot that you are allowed to place the ball where you want to hit it. Also I believe in teaching the release should happen when your arm is near shoulder high. I also drill a release a catch. You swing both arms but do not swing the racquet. Allow the ball to fall back into you extended hand that held the ball. If the ball is placed properly it will drop straight back down into your extended hand. So many players have to move around catch the ball. Next I have them repeat the same drill standing at the baseline but we allow the ball placement to hit the court. It is interesting to see where it lands. Just a few additional ideas that have worked for my players and students over the years.

I have watched numerous videos on the toss and the serve. Your toss and serve methods are the best for me. I have tried tossing the ball from the palm and release fingers (5-fingers holding, like the knuckle ball in baseball), keep fingers on the tip of thumb-index-middle fingers and let go (3 fingers holding), and his method which is keep the ball in the palm (or around the palm) and holding the ball with 1 finger (the thumb). His method is the best and makes sense because during the toss only my thumb releases, which minimize effect on rotation/direction/angle of the ball in the air. Think about it, 5-finger holding, 3-finger holding, or 1-finger holding, at the end all the fingers have to let go and that's when the rotation/direction/angle comes into the toss.
Great video. Just like the "serve" video, it worked for me.
PS. I am an older, beginner tennis player for 4 months and finally learning the serve the last 2 weeks. I tried with 5-finger first for a week and then 3-finger for a week with very inconsistent results. At about 5% to 10% consistency on the serve. After watching your 2 videos (toss and serve), I was able to serve (not perfect yet) with 50%+ consistency after one 90-minute practice on my own. Thanks.

Always tossed with my fingers and my toss is generally ok. Sometimes I lose it completely though. Once I was serving up 5-0 after winning the first set 6-2. All of a sudden I just started flicking the ball over my head and couldn't get it back for the life of me. Thought about switching to an underarm serve but didn't think I could show my face on those courts again if I did that. Sure enough, I lost in 3.

I use three fingers to hold the ball - thumb, index and middle. During the ready position, my arm is straight and the racquet rests on my ring and little finger. I find that holding and releasing from three digits eliminates any unwanted rotation of the ball during the toss - I am sending it straight up or a little over to the left.

  • @NamesAreRandom
    @NamesAreRandom 2 года назад +1

I think the key is when you release nothing should happen to the ball - no change in direction, no spin - it just keeps going as it was. Hence we need to hold it in a way that even if we get excited and release aggressively nothing much happens. This means taking the fingers and the wrist out of the equation as much as possible, which is why that base of the fingers with fingers open is a good option. The other is holding it like a glass of water as even aggressively opening the fingers won't move the ball and the wrist doesn't bend much in that direction so it's hard to involve it.

Hello, first of all thank you for your videos, they are always full of interestring tips.
I have a question about the right time to let the ball leave the hand. Some coaches say to toss the ball when you finish to charge your weight on the back leg, some other say to toss when you make the weight transfer and shift the back foot with the front one (I use a pinpoint serve stand). What is your advise regarding this?
    Thank you in advance

The ball leaves your hand at around your head height as you are lifting. The weight transfer process is a different story and needs a separate video. Can't explain with a few words here.

Hi, my daughter has issues with tossing the ball. Should she still try to hold the ball in the middle of the hand?

Thumb the ball in the middle of Palm is pretty tricky advice, but integrated tossing is more hard to practice, it will cause timing issue and toss breaking problem, I would say it is not easy to handle
