5 Drills For Better Serve Rhythm And Timing (Tennis Lesson)
•
1. Put ball basket inside court so you’re forced to move forward during your serve to get the next ball
2. Say “1-2-3” or “turn-toss-hit” to keep a beat while serving
3. Practice the “figure 8” serve motion to keep your serve loose and rhythmic
4. Hold on with only 3 finger tips to force a loose and smooth motion
5. Serve with your eyes closed to groove the proper serve rhythm and timing (toss lower
to make it easier)
•
You got this!
That’s a crazy low ball toss. I love it. I’ve actually never seen anyone who can hit the ball while it’s still on the rise or at apex of the toss like you do there. Even the quickest servers like Kyrgios, Dolgopolov or Ivanisevic.
I saw this on my instagram feed the other day. I also thought kyrgios tossed higher too. instagram.com/p/CQ0Qs33DIVf/?
Closed eyes and practice rhythm toss up are great. A little bit rush for me thought. Thanks for posting it.
Mind blowing. 👍👍👍👍. What a Great tip Just keep Ball hopper inside the court.
Wow. You are too good Ryan! Putting basket in front will definitely help to go front while serving. You are amazing Sir!!
1 Next ball Serve in
2. Turn toss hit or 1 2 3
3. Figure 8 serve
4 3 Finger serve
5. Blind Serve
Dude I am forever indebted to you! I have a pretty good 4.5 serve but I’ve been struggling with consistency really badly lately. I watched your video last night and decided to implement the turn, toss, hit cadence into today’s match and I without a doubt had my best serving match ever! I wasn’t turning!! 🙃 absolute game changer! Thank you thank you thank you
Dude that’s amazing!! Thank you for telling me! Thanks for trying it. You got this Thomas!
Subbed :) great tips coach.
lets gooooo
Where is your toss placement btw? It appears to be almost parallel to the baseline? I'm thinking of doing that because I normally toss 45 degrees in but I'm just not consistent. thanks
The toss is into the court when practicing serving with the basket in front of you. When doing figure 8 it’s within reach so that you don’t move. The others it’s in front as well.
I don't wanna be that guy...but this video is over 8 minutes
Love the basket tip. However that ball toss is way too low for me...I would just feel rushed. Counting is still a good tip though. (For anyone who like me needs a higher ball toss, I still count, but my count starts at 1 when I release the ball and ends on 3 when I hit the serve)
That low toss has been uncomfortable for me too, because I learned to play tennis before the internet. No one ever taught me to push the ball up lower than I did for forever. I'm just going to work on this until it becomes second nature. It just seems to work for Ryan in this lesson so I want it to work for me. Happy hitting!
Hey Ryan! The idea on the ball holder in front to force you to move your weight forward is very nice! And the eyes closed. Wow. Thank you man.
Also, how would you compare the sensation on contact, between your Wilson Ultra and the Bab Pure Drive?
Talk about good timing! Exactly the lesson I needed today! #MuscleMemoryGo!
Any advice for rhythm once you add a knee bend in?
Colin send me video of your serve. My email is ryan@2minutetennis.net
basket position is good tip. holding the racket lightly is another. closing eyes is voodoo crap. We cannot toss the ball that consistent. I'll try the counting and figure 8 move. It sounds promising.
I can't believe how it work out for me, the great Turn Toss Hit really helped out to build my rhythm! Also three fingers grip for the relaxed motion in the drill! Thank you Ryan !
Just noticed that this was a 13 minutes video, instead of two minutes
You are correct!!! Thanks for the comment!
I have inconsistent serves and rhythm, especially on my ad side. Definitely gonna try this! Thx again Ryan!
As usual, the most unique and comprehensive tennis content out there!! I usually don't subscribe, but finally giving in :)
Wow thank you so much. I greatly appreciate your kind words, support, and trust. Thank you Rashid🎾😊👍
Hey Ryan...great stuff as always...I've experimented with serve grip pressure actually holding the grip tighter and I feel as though I release all that stored energy thru contact...next time give it a try and would love to hear your feedback ...thanks
Great lesson, Ryan! I love turn, toss, hit because it reminds me to coil as I toss ball. Thanks!
1,2,3 is excellent tip, I also use 1,2 rhytm where 1 is looooong and 2 is hit, works for me.
what speed are those balls when you serve?
Thanks
From korea.
Placing the ball hopper inside the court is a clever tip.

Awesome tips! Will practice in this way next time on the court! Thank you!!
You R really genius! Thanks a lot 🙏🙏🙏
Wow thank you so much!!!
This is a great drill, I've done this with my students in the past before. Great stuff!
the 3 finger was cool ! :) I watch your videos to ""steal"" some coaching methods. I've already picked up on a few. :)
Leaving the courts today, I stopped to gab with a friend, who complimented me on my serve. I said, “it’s a 2minutetennis serve.” She asked me to watch her serve, consistent but soft & floaty. I said I used the “turn, toss, hit” tip. She tried it and was ecstatic to get better power on her serve!
U always say nobody ranked watches your videos but I always send these videos to one of my friends who play on varsity w me who compete at a very high level with multiple d1 offers and he LOVES THEM!! I think it stems from everyone can always learn new things no matter how good they are. Why else does novak Rafa and roger all have coaches 😉
I try your tips next games Thanks!
Thanks so much!!! Keep me posted how it works for you. 🎾😊👍
Hey Ryan, fellow Ryan here, idk if this is a weird question, but I was curious of how tall you are, I know height helps with angle and power ability of your serve, and was wondering your height in regards to the height of your toss, thanks!!!
I’m about 5’9” tall.
Hi Ryan.do you bend your wrist before you serve?best regards
The wrist is loose and relaxed through the whole motion.
Some great tips here Ryan. Can't wait to get out on the courts to practice.
Awesome! Keep me posted. ✅😊😊👍👍
buenas tardes!!! podrías por favor dar la posibilidad de subtitularlo en Español?, muchas gracias, saludos!!!!
I often forget to include BREATHING as an element of my serve rhythm. Inhaling as the service motion begins allows me to exhale as I make contact with the ball. Holding my breath robs me of significant power and tension release.A conscious decision to breathe includes making vocal noise at impact so that you'll have feedback of this rhythm enhancement.
The wiggling the racket impression was fabulous 🤣
Fantastic good again, as always! Thank you, Ryan! :) I am also playing for 37-38 years... :)
Excellent video !
Great tips !
Coaching the Service with your eyes covered is the best argument I've ever heard for sending the ball lower !
Very useful tips and examples to follow. I only had to adjust my grip differently due to my injured arm, but all the rest works well. But... how tall are you? It seems to me that the ball passes easily the net, even if you don't jump when you hit. Another thing: I use your video also to practice listening to English, as your pronunciation is very clear and understandable ;)
Thanks so much I’m only 5’ 9’’ tall. I’m a little taller than Diego Schwartzman.
Ryan is not only teaching great tennis but English as well :) Great going coach !!
Thank you , Ryan! Very helpful! Will try it!
Sir, where is this court location? Is that the club house on the other side? Or a home? Looks beautiful.
Thx for this! It would help us a lot to explain how to use our feet to serve
If I’m ever having a bad day, I’ll listen to your intro to cheer me up! Time to get the ball hopper out…
Wow loved this lesson no balls on the net except when you forced the error😀👍🏻
wow the 1st one was big brain that was very original
Great Drills. Can't wait to try them out. Thanks Ryan. As always you are a huge help.
Thanks for super drills.
as allways, very usefull drills !!
Thanks you so much!!!
Makes a lot sense. Tq for the lessons.
i say..."am ster dam" 😄
Great stuff 👍👍
Great tips!
I have just mastered the 3 ball toss n serve! At last I have the right timing thanks to your serving lessons.
Good job. thats not easy to do!
Ryan, I find that lower tosses (as your recent video promoted) do not provide for the full rhythmic serve sequence.
Also, so many women on WTA have high tosses - 100÷ mph on 5'5" tall gals.
