Love your analogies - elevator, dinner plates etc. The J toss is gonna be a game changer for me I reckon. As usual, some great stuff that I'll never hear anywhere else. Cheers!
You are awesome. I like every tips you showed. You are so kind to share your secrets to everyone. May God bless you. I hope you will a lucky life for what you offered to tennis fans around the world.
really good, thanks! I've been doing the elevator toss and yes, its about 50% consistent, the J-Toss looks much more fluid. Thanks for the great visualizations!
This has been great. I've been struggling to come up with a consistent serve for years. It seems to have clicked now, using the 3-step process (turn-place-hit), the slow motion of the toss, and not too high of a toss.
placing a ball in the air, raise your arm slowly, and keep the tossing arm up after releasing the ball, all critical points ! Many thanks to master Ryan to clarify my tennis train !
Very nice, comprehensive video, Ryan! Where should the toss land if you're hitting a kick serve? Was it you who suggested placing the hopper in front, instead of on the side of you, when you're practicing serves, so that you naturally fall into the court? - I've used that, and it was a surprisingly effective easy tip.
Thanks for the great video. Enjoyed it immensely and you are spot on related to how to throw the ball. I now understand what I am doing wrong during my toss and understand where to focus on.
The Complete Book of the Tennis Serve Ball Toss by Ryan. It could be a best seller. One unrelated question: Your back foot is just slightly pulled back pass the front. Your legs are almost in line and perpendicular to the base line. Opposite of this would be John McEnroe (extreme). Do you recommend your set up or is this just your style? Could be a future video topic.
Tossing into a ball basket is good idea. The placement of the basket will depend on your height, how high you lift off, etc. Any idea where Federer's first serve toss would land if he did not hit it? I am the same height but only lift off a few inches and estimate the basket for me will be 3.0 to 3.5 feet into the court.
These are good tips. I've said this in the past but I would add that the problem you have with not reaching high enough on your toss stems from a lack of tilt back in your trophy position. Every pro I have seen tilts back to get more shoulder over shoulder action. You have little tilt back and so you don't need to get the arm that high and your body is fighting your attempts to move the arm higher. Also, I actually have my wrist between palm up and palm to the side when I toss. I think Fed does this too if you watch his grip on the ball, you can clearly see his bottom fingers which means there is a slight tilt on the wrist. I find that palm to the side makes it difficult to consistently toss into the court. I don't do a J toss because it's too complicated for my shoulder motion, I want to keep my toss as simple and relaxed as possible.
Good video, Ryan. Question: it seems your toss is on the lower side where you’re hitting it right at its apex (and thus more still), as opposed to the ball falling. Did you time yourself from release to strike to see if it falls in your time zone you’ve said in other videos is the ideal height? Your motion just feels fast to me by naked eye. Thanks!
Yes. My toss timing is “too low”. It’s .53. It’s what feels best for me but I wouldn’t force others to use it. My toss is like Oscar Otte. Really low. But it’s how I feel most comfortable. Thanks!!
I am that guy that does everything wrong you mentioned. I put spin on the ball once tossed, my arm goes up too fast, and I release the ball too early causing the ball to go too high. I will try to fix all these things and try the J toss as well. All really helpful tips.
it is actually 12 minutes instead of 2. Not sure what your YT analytics say about Average view duration, but in these times of tiktok clips, people seem to have lost the patience to go further than 2-4 minutes. Personally I stopped the video several times, went back, replayed,so I spend more than 30min on your course.😉 Thumbs up. I would add that for beginners, until the movement is automated, it helps following the ball with the eyes
It depends on what type of serve you are trying to hit. This toss that he explains here is going into the court, this is mainly for a Flat or Slice serves. Most second serves are hit with Top Spin so your toss would want to be more behind you than into the court. Most of his tips will also apply though, glass of water grip, place the ball gently, continue moving your arm up after ball release, etc…
Hi Ryan! Great video as per usual. Question. Do you think the height of your toss influences your ability to keep lifting the arm? It almost looks like if you held your arm up longer, you would end up either hitting your own arm or having to rush the delivery to the ball and curl that arm in super quick. My own natural toss height tends to be on the lower side, and I find it to be an issue for me. If I toss a little higher, I am able to keep the toss arm a bit slower, smooth out the motion and keep lifting the toss hand. Of course, my serve is nowhere as good as yours 🤣🤣
One issue that was not addressed is how much to coil shoulders away from the net before releasing the toss. Some players toss first and then coil away. Others fully coil away first before releasing the toss. Others are 50/50.
My toss is so unpredictable that I would start just by thinking in #1, #3 and #4. The J (which leads to tossing into the box) seems a bit unnatural to me right now.
hmm, not the greatest technique I've seen. tips are ok, just not complete. 1st.: when your tossing arm goes high, your legs should go low and you are coiling away from your target. 2nd.: transfer of body weight from the back leg to the front leg. 3rd.: parallel tossing. 4th.: relaxed tossing and the hitting arm. and so on and so on.
I get it…You didn’t like the video or my serve. I never mentioned that I had the “greatest technique you’ve ever seen” nor did I say I was the best coach or player. I’m just willing to make content day in and day out (which most people aren’t willing to do). Thanks!!
Boris, could you elaborate on the so on and so on? Seems a bit vague and not complete., Just send Ryan a video of your serve and the correct technique. I am sure we can all learn from you.

great tips as always - thanks very much
Great video. You deserver way more views and subscribers.
@@davegallo8790 thank you so much!!!
Great tips! Wish we weren't in lockdown here so I could practice. Might have to do shadow swings.
I tried this and practiced it in a city league match and it worked. My serves just reached a new level!
Nice tips . Excited to try them out soon.
placing a ball in the air, raise your arm slowly, and keep the tossing arm up after releasing the ball, all critical points ! Many thanks to master Ryan to clarify my tennis train !
Excellent lesson!
Wow thank you Jay!
I do a couple of dummy swings and look at and memorise where the racket would make contact. This helps me to toss the ball in the right place.
Great advice
awesome lesson
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing!
So glad you liked it!
Great video,,, The palm has a nice loose in it may too loose and bends maybe too much still a great serve Vic Braden style
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all your videos and content. Btw, where is your ball hooper/basket from?
Tanks for the video!
Q: How do you throw the ball to the right when your arm is arcing to the left? My toss is often to far left aswell.
Teacher Ryan, I have been reaching some progress with your classes. Thank you so much. Regards from a Brazilian student.
Thank you so much for doing this video! This has really helped me a lot. I also like your shoes- I like that color.

Should I be hitting the ball on the way up? On the way down? At the apex? Thanks
Nice tips!! I did however, REALLY want to see that toss drop in the basket😂
Love it. Like and Subs! Thanks Ryan.

I love the letter J concept.

@@andrewhwang8951 yes. But I didn’t know how old you are so I mentioned someone on your bow.
Looks like the J arm ball toss is a good tip. Have been tossing straight up over the baseline & half the time the serve is not very effective.
Отлично 👍

is the J toss only effective on only the flat serve? it seems like it wouldn't work so well, on the top spin or even a slice.
maybe, his J toss isn't as extreme as he demonstrated with the basket. it is more vertical vs in to the court
it is actually 12 minutes instead of 2.

Thanks for watching Tom
One concern the serve is a one-move with ball hit on a rise, so it might be hard to control serve spots
First serve toss vs second? Is it the exact same? Thank you!
I am curious as well. I think it is tho

Is the ball toss same rainbow path with kick serve ?
It’s a rainbow toss but in over your head instead of into the court.
08:18 is for kick serve. Thx @@2MinuteTennis

I like that your toss is not extremely high.
I think you've been watching me my entire tennis career in our club. Am I your model for an inconsistent toss ?
holding the ball sideways takes some getting used to
It absolutely does. Only do it if you have an inconsistent toss. Once you get it though your toss almost never has to be caught.
@@2MinuteTennis is that why pete sampras used it very successfully
how is he not running out of ideas LMAO

Just give it time and allow yourself to be flexible, find what’s right and works for you.
Show me one professional tennis player who tosses a ball like this.
Which tip specifically?
If you mean Point 1, Karlovic is the only one I'm aware of.
