Really great video Jeff. I’ve watched a lot of your content and made some tweaks to my serve motion. Can’t believe these small adjustments have made so much difference. Thank you.
Great lesson Jeff... i learnt to juggle many years ago and ONE of the key lessons I learnt was to begin with a single ball and toss/release this from your hand and keep your hand open (like the flower petals). The ball should go up and down and fall BACK into your hand (try not to look at the ball either, as you are trying to create spatial awareness which will be important as you add 3,4, 5 etc balls to juggle) and do this as part of a serve drill (hold the trophy pose) and toss/release the ball and ENSURE it falls back into your hand, catch it and repeat. If you can do this you are going to have a repeatedly ball toss, PLUS your opponent will not be able to guess your serve based upon this type of toss/release.
GOAT of a ball release lesson, Jeff. It took me 3 years to discover tips 1-4 on my own through trial and error service practice. I will focus on tip 5 with my next baskets. Thanks!
Amazing! I have a very good, powerful serve but only when I have a good toss. Now I know how I can make it happen consistently. I’ve been playing tennis for over 20 years, and now improved a lot from your video on the serve and one handed backhand lately. Thanks a million!
Hi Jeff. Great video (as always). Just one observation: the last tip (face de palm of the hand to the lateral fence instead the back fence) you say (at 8:10) that you can achieve this with "the rotation of the shoulder" (instead of referring to the "pronation of the arm").
Hi! Jeff Thanks a lot for the good explanation. I can correct my misunderstanding toss scheme. To extend my arm further, I got it from you. Thanks again.
Absolutely agree that it’s more important to improve yr motion to load and unwind b4 u can determine when to release e ball in your toss during services.
Hi Jeff great video and great tips. I've been waiting for this video:) Another problem with my serve is I find I'm using my shoulder to much just like I'm throwing a baseball. So a video of how to use the proper kinetic chain and a drill of how to get the elbow goung up on the throw would be great. Stay well my friend:)
Thank you Grant! Glad you enjoyed this video. Check out this video, I'm sure it'll help you out ruclips.net/video/6fXuh--XQqU/видео.html Keep safe and strong ;) Jeff.
Thank you again this tip with rotation looks very good. I am going to try im my garden against the wall / courts are closed/. What works good for me on top of all you advise is to go with tossing/placing/ arm first down and up. This completely relaxes my tossing arm.
Great video Jeff. One thing l found is that the tossing arm must stay up just a fraction longer to allow the necessary time for a server to fully load before he/she goes upward to hit the serve. If the tossing arm drops too fast it basically ruins any chance to get power/direction and chances are the serve ends up going into the net.
Try spinning the ball with top-spin out of your hand so that when you hit the top-spin serve you will have something extra on it (called the Magnus Force). It is simple physics. The faster you spin it you will be surprised with the result. As the physics professor, I know plenty of stuff you might try. Spin also stabilizes the toss out of your hand.
What if you hold the ball like a glass of water?, and still use the fingers. If you hold the ball as if you were holding a glass water, and the shoulder would stay in a proper way where the ball would land in front of you. What your thoughts on what I am saying? Great video my friend.
I liked the video. Very useful. I would like to see a video to improve my attention on the ball and eye coordination. I once saw in a tournament that the player was with the coach doing some exercises in which the coach threw the ball at him and the player grabbed it with his hand. I think that's what I'm talking about. What other exercises can be done to improve my focus on the ball?. Thanks for your videos.
You were even faster when I had playback set at 125% of normal. :) I tried tossing the ball holding it in my fingertip. One of the fingers often nudged the ball in a direction other than straight up. I have a better toss if I start with the ball in the Palm of my hand. That kind of makes sense because that takes about 3 joints out of the equation. You're the pro and I could keep working on a toss with the fingers, but if I'm already consistent lifting from the palm, what do I gain from a fingertip grip? Strangely, I didn't have much trouble with a fingertip grip before I dinged my right hand and had to switch to my left.
Great video, I always felt the finger grip tends to spin the ball like a cricket bowler. Ive always Palmed the ball and can toss a pure knuckle. Varies for everyone I guess.i got short stubby fingers
Thanks for the video. i've just one question. Why is a J toss inferior? If I understand correctly, J toss ensures amature players that boll goes into court, not just up-and-down on the baseline. With your toss that can happen if done unatentively. Any other reasons?
So truth many junior tournament players don’t listen never get better in serve because they don’t realize this secret no matter how many times they watch Sampras serve.
Jeff - Ideally, where should the toss be at contact in relation to your body/shoulders/head? If you were to toss and let it land on the court, where should the ball land? For reference, If your head is 12 o'clock where should the ball be? Plus, how far in to the court should the toss be? Thanks.
I think it depends on the type of serve: flat, slide, or kick. For kick serve you should toss the ball over or behind your head... flat serve at 45 degrees and slide is more to the right of the tossing arm...am I wrong? Using the clock would be 12 for flat, 1 for slide and for kick?
Excellent tips. Except I imitated Palm turn to side fence incorrectly! You are LEFT handed, so when you turn your palm to left fence, that is equivalent of right hander turning left palm to right in video, your tossing palm turns to left fence. My bad!
Toss is definitely the wrong word to use. How about LIFT? Release is a word that describes the end of the action. Lift the ball then release. How’s that? Let’s all stop using toss.

That´s awesome Keith! Thanks for sharing!
This video already helped my toss more than any lesson I’ve taken through the years. I was king of the J-toss, Doctor J! Great video!
Amazing! Thank you for watching.
Thanks Jeff.
I'm from Brazil and I really appreciate your videos.
You're welcome Sergio! Glad to have you here ;)

Great idea to turn the hand in the end of the tossing motion! So simple and so effective... it changed radically my serve! THANKS!
You're welcome Adriano! That's amazing to know.
Awesome video Jeff. Many will benefit!
Thanks Jes!

You're welcome!
Another good tip
Thanks Carlos ;)
Hi! Jeff
Thanks a lot for the good explanation. I can correct my misunderstanding toss scheme. To extend my arm further, I got it from you. Thanks again.
Hi Jeff. Thanks for great tips for toss. But i wonder why j toss should be avoided. It is helpful for not to back over the baseline
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. If it works for you than use it. I have found it causes more problems with toss consistency.
Jeff.
HI Jeff. There was a tip about lifting the ball with your weight more on the back foot. It made more control for me because of rushing factor. Thanks
Great tips on the toss!
Thank you Ken!
Great lesson on the fundamentals of ball tossing, explained very clearly and understandable. Very good and worth the watch
Thank you Jonathan! I appreciate your feedback.
Hi Jeff thanks for this video. Regards from brunei

Excellent lesson!
Thank you Jay!

Hi Jeff, like to flower bloom tall release and that you don't do the J-toss, will give it a go and try and change my current tennis habit.
I found this advice useful. Thanks Jeff.
You're welcome Laurence! Glad you like it.
Stay safe and keep strong.
Jeff.
Thanks Coach Jeff, You're Great Coach

If the tossing arm drops too fast it basically ruins any chance to get power/direction and chances are the serve ends up going into the net.
Thank you Gregory! That's correct, I agree.
Great video Jeff. I keep tossing the ball low and when i aim for higher it just goes south.
Thanks, hope this video helps you improve that!

As Pat Rafter once said: „It all comes down to toss and spin!“ (mental side)
Good one. Thanks for watching ;)

I like the “release” instead of the inappropriate toss.
Thank you Jes!

Hey Sean. Thank you for watching.
It depends on the type of serve you are hitting and your level. 12:30 or 12 is good.
Jeff.
Does Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin use "J " toss? Her serve is different than any other also using no look toss.
Is it more difficult for a left hander to master the kick serve?
I don't think so as long as you follow the right instruction.
What are some good tactics to use on someone who cheats way in on your serve?
a serve right at the body....
Was the palm turn the start of hitting
Thanks for watching. Hard to answer that.
Jeff.
Nice tip. I wish you can make it in 5 minutes or less though.
Could you name the tennis coach you referred to.... one Chris ?????? What’s his name please.
My toss has as much spin as a Nadal forehand. So frustrating.
N N let your hand bloom ;)
Watch my toss lesson and practice the finger tip trick:)
It WORKS!!! Thank you so much!
That's awesome! You're welcome ;)
Excellent tips. Except I imitated Palm turn to side fence incorrectly!
You are LEFT handed, so when you turn your palm to left fence, that is equivalent of right hander turning left palm to right in video, your tossing palm turns to left fence. My bad!
Thank you Frank, great awareness on your end.
Give it another go and let me know how it works out for you ;)
