Brilliant, clear and concise video on Rekordbox. As someone who had never used it before, I wanted to say thanks for saving me a lot of time and hassle!
Interesting ideas, I do around 100 weddings/corporate events a year and the majority are mainstream due to the diverse age ranges of guests. My playlists in Rekordbox are organised 50s,60s,70s,80s,90s,00s,10s, I also have a few playlists that narrow down the very best songs I know will work from those decades plus a latest charts folder, within those folders I then categorise all the songs into genres. The genres I mainly work with are Disco/Soul, R&B/Hip Hop, House/Deep House/Electro House, Motown/Soul/Funk, Rock/Alternative and Pop. The main problem for me at these type of gigs is that as much as you try and set up a playlist running order in advance of the job essentially you have to be versatile and adapt to whats going on on the night taking on board guest requests in the process ...rather than at a club where you can do more your own thing, so you need a good system where you can access a varied range of music quickly rather than sticking to the same songs. With playlists set up in the way I have done it I've found you have to be very strict with yourself in organising ...and can only have the songs in there that there is a chance you will definitely play, but even after the narrowing down process there are still around 500 mainstream songs from the densely populated 80s,90s,00s and 10s eras, so at these types of gigs its very time consuming scrolling through the cdj2000. Although a lot of the work I do is governed by client requests in the event planning process there will always be times in the night where I will need to fill in the gaps and my own personal areas of choice are 80s/90s Hip Hop stuff like Back by Dope Demand/900 Number/Rob Base etc/90s UK Garage and all the good house stuff from the late 80s onwards. I've probably spent a year organising and reorganising Rekordbox to suit how i have worked since I started using this software but Im wondering if what you have done by BPM may be better. So before I start spending the time consuming process of re-organising again I just wanted to put this to you to see if you think your method would be a better way forward for wedding and corporate events ...but with the chance that I will be able to get on a roll of playing from across those genre playing preferences that I mentioned. Like you also said, there will always be particular songs that I enjoy playing but I'd like to keep the sets varied as I am doing so many gigs and want to keep it as fresh in my own mind as possible. One other thing, I have noticed several times now that I have searched for a song on my cdj/sd card and it doesn't display, however if I then search for the artist it will show up, any ideas?
Hi Phil, This is what I'd do - start with folders as per your genres: Disco/Soul, R&B/Hip Hop, House/Deep House/Electro House, Motown/Soul/Funk, Rock/Alternative and Pop. Forget decades, you'll sound like a compilation CD. I know I used to. Then decide which way to divide each genre (I use the key system). For example, all your house will be around the same 120 - 130 bpm bracket, so split them in to separate playlists by genre. For example, I call house with an urban crossover vocal, like Rihanna or Flo Rida, 'Techno House'. With a more pop / rock vocal, like something by Example or Avicii, I call 'Electro House'. A music producer might laugh at my labels but I don't care as they are for me and I instinctively know the difference. Label them in a way you're happy with. Motown / Soul / Funk I'd put in to BPM along with Disco & Soul, and I'd have Nu Disco and re-edits / remixes thrown in there to keep it fresh. Rock / Alt / Pop - personally I just throw in together (Rock in one, Pop in the other). Just a case of scrolling through and playing one you think your audience will like. Maybe have a 'last hour' playlist of crowd-pleasers like Sex on Fire, Living on a Prayer etc etc. Meanwhile with Hip-Hop, definitely use my system of bracketing by BPM. Works like a charm. One last note - you can't go wrong with the Camelot key system for any kind of dance music (not hip-hop). Not just for the music sonically 'fitting' but as a logical way of sorting your house tracks.
Hi Brett Thanks for taking the time to post that. Since I saw your video I have since pretty much done everything you suggested with the exception of the chamelot key. I havn't really looked into that as I've always been more a bit old skool. How exactly does that work? ...and is there any quick way of sorting it all, like I said not looked into it so not 100% how its working. I understand the concept but not how to organise and label the songs, I currently have my house the sdame as r&b/hip hop, by bpm folders. I understand what your doing with your genres ie techno house as you do need to quickly be able to tell the difference, its been playing on my own mind for a while how to split the urban dance from the proper house, electro house is right for guetta, harris, swedish house mafia etc, cant imagine anyone knocking you for using that label. With Rock and Pop I have them seperate but have had to put them into bpm folders as theres around 500 of each and I need to whittle down the folders. Im not a huge fan of playing pop but as you know its unavoidable sometimes. What I have done is use colours for songs that work well first hour and last hour and funnily enough the last hour includes the likes of Mr Brightside, Sex On Fire, Reef etc etc etc you know the score. Good idea re NuDisco and ReEdits. What I find is that I don't seem to ever play a great deal of funky house and I'm wondering about putting them into the 70s/80s Disco Soul Playlist as they are just a modern twist on that genre anyway. Stuff like Freemasons etc All in all the system is already working better for me since I saw your original video, maybe just needs a bit of tweaking with the chamelot system so if you can shed a bit more light on that would be great. Cheers Phil
DJ Phil Webster Hi there and thanks very much for your positive feedback and comments. The Camelot system is explained at mixedinkey.com - I find it really easy to use and simple to organize. You can drag your tracks in to the mixed in key window straight from iTunes, hit 'analyze' and it will label everything according to the Camelot system in the comments tag. These appear in Rekordbox so you can select the same key easily and just drag in to the right playlist. I find it works really nicely - tracks mix very, very well with each other. Have a look on the site and you'll see anecdotes of full-on, world famous dj acts using the camelot system in their setlists - says it all.
Thanks for the tips on creating playlists m8. Iv just last night taken delivery of my xdj-r1. My project now is to make my 8000 or so downloaded tracks as efficient as possible on rekordbox for my ext hard drive so i can play them hassle free at the bars/ clubs. Your vid has helped a huge lot!!!
Great to hear Richard. It's a hassle to start with, but well worth organizing using folders - you'll be glad you did as your collection grows. Assuming this is your first Pioneer piece of kit, be aware that Rekordbox has suffered with some pretty bad stability issues in the past - especially revolving around the all-important library file that stores all your precious tagging and beatgrid info. These days Rekordbox is much more stable - but please make sure you go to file/library/backup on a regular basis when you're slogging through 8000 tracks. One other thing - when your budget allows I highly recommend fast usb's instead of a hard drive for playing your tracks. Much more reliable, fast, comparatively cheap and you can carry a backup of your music hassle-free. They fit nicely inside your pocket too! Have a look at Patriot sticks - I had mine recommended to me and they are still going strong 3 years on. If you're going to play in clubs / bars with Pioneer kit, it's very impressive to management when you turn up with headphones and pull a usb out of your pocket, ready to play. You'll look 10x more professional than the guy that turned up with a laptop and hard drive under his arm. Have fun!!!
Dj Brettski yeah i feel the same about that subject, it's way cooler if you only play with your cdjs (with usbs) instead of an laptop with extra software etc, it's like bringing an extra wheel to your ferrari ;)...the cdjs are made for that and have a lot of features already inside
k♪bah I know some guys that sue Serrato so need the laptop which is fair enough, but if you're using CDJ's as easy to use as the Pioneer's you owe it to yourself to leave the computer behind. I'll play gigs to a certain audience where young guys (always guys, never girls) will hear a good mix, grin and lean over my desk expecting me to be using Traktor, ready to take the piss. When there's no laptop they have to shut up. For vinyl guys it's funny that CDJ's are seen as 'real' DJ'ing but that's how time has moved on. Regardless of image, using USB's instead of a laptop is cheap, portable and best of all reliable. I very, very rarely have Pioneer decks crash on me, they usually keep playing even when they do - and I always have a spare USB of music... not that one has ever died at a gig on me either.
Hey. This video was really helpful. What version of rekordbox is this? For some reason on 4.1.0 I cant create subfolders within my playlists like you have it. For example how you have 'Mainstream' ..then within mainstream you have hip hop / reggae , mainstream 120 - 140, wedding disco and drumbass / dubstep?
+Sunny Badwal You can create folders within folders, not within a playlist. A playlist is like a piece of paper with songs on, a folder is just that, something to put those lists in to. You cant put a folder inside a piece of paper, if you see what I mean.
tHANK YOU! Fuck... All this time I've been using playlists only...I didn't even knoe you could have folders. I had 128 playlists of all different genres, was driving me insane! Thanks so much.
@Dan TheMan - if I understand you correctly, your music is on a laptop and you have purchased a bigger USB stick so want to start again. In that case just make sure you've got your folder structure right like in the video and drag over to the new (formatted FAT) USB stick. Maybe keep the smaller one as your spare for gigs ;-)
Thanks a lot for the video Brettski. I had one query. I mostly play House and wanted to know if this order of arranging music would work? 1. Genre (Deep,Tech,Prog etc) 2. BPM 3. Key Thanks again for the video!
Hi - before I comment I should say that what 'works' is what is the the most logical system for YOU. Like I said about genres and the correct label for tracks, this isn't about anyone else but your usability and what makes life easiest, not sticking to anyone elses conventions. With that in mind, I'd agree that genre is the right top 'level' and then I'd say that you'd sort according to key first, like I have so a load of playlists in each key, and then each one of those playlists in BPM order so you can progress down them. If you did it the way you're proposing, you'd have everything near each other in terms of BPM but you're going to have a nightmare hunting for compatible keys in your BPM range while you're playing. Hope that makes sense?!? So yeah lol. Genre (folder) / Key (playlist) / sort Key playlist from lowest to highest BPM.
Dj Brettski I've have all my songs analysed with MIK but when I connect to my CDJ's the keys are not normal they are showing A#, B#, FM# it is very messed up. New decks. How can I get it to show 1A, 2A, 3A ect when I use sort by key? I've always used MIK and have no idea how do it any other way.
foghaze So you're getting confused with actual real musical keys and the MIK labelling process based on the Camelot wheel. MIK labels the files in the comments section of the songs metadata, not the key. So you need a CDJ that can sort on comments. Never heard of one that does. That's why you need to build playlists for each Camelot key and search through your playlists.
Great video! Very Helpful. I am new to rekordbox this week and in the process of setting it up on a macbook then transferring the files to USB. My question: once you have prepared a USB with files but have perhaps added new cue/loop points to them on a laptop, how does rekordbox treat that? I notice you mentioned that it recognizes if the files already exist on the USB but will it update the new information (ie. cue/loop points). Thank you very much.
dformd13 Hi there, I honestly couldn't say, but if you Google that question with the keyword 'rekordbox' I'm sure a few have asked the same on the Pioneer website. Glad the video was helpful, cheers!
Hi brett. gret video.. I've being using rekordbox on and off for a while . Once I set up my playlist I have not been back on it.. Now I have a bigger usg and want to start again.. When all the mp3 are only on the PC.. How to I transfer them onto the USB so that Rekorbox will find them in the playlist etc ? Cheers
Hi Brettski, I'm looking at the new Pioneer due out in February but unlike most here I'm permanently on the Wedding & Party curcuit after 48 years of djing, mostly as a full-time DJ but my question is that I take out 2 copies of my HD with over 100,000 trax and fear that I'll be dead before I ever get them into Rekordbox. Any thoughts ?
Hey Paul, good question. Importing songs in to Rekordbox isn't actually that time consuming - Rekordbox analyses each track for BPM info etc but that's it. Indeed, if your music is already sorted in iTunes you can look at your iTunes playlists in Rekordbox already. Of course 100k songs is a huge library so if you do import over you'll still be leaving your computer running for a long time (no idea how long - overnight?). The part that's laborious is transferring from Rekordbox to media, such as a USB, hard drive etc and that's where I think you should scrub the idea of sumping 100k tracks in to Rekordbox and instead look at using your laptop as your library. I were you my workflow would be as follows - I'd have playlists of a few thousand songs that cover everything I ever get asked for, r'n'b, pop, dance, wedding classics and so on. Nice as it is to have a massive library, I bet out of those 100k you actually get to play a fraction of them. So get playlists made of the tunes you need, in Rekordbox and ready to rock. I'd then export these to USB sticks to plug in to the Pioneer gear you're buying. USB sticks are great as they draw virtually no power and are quick and disposable. Way better than hard drives in my opinion. The rest of your library I'd have on a laptop in iTunes, or maybe on one of your external hard drives plugged in to the laptop. If you get a request that's not on your sticks, it's a case of looking it up in iTunes and making a playlist, say 'Requests' and dragging it in. When you've got a few in there, maybe 4 or five, drag that playlist in to Rekordbox, let it analyse and then update your USB's on the fly. The other advantage of having the laptop to hand is that if you get a request you don't have, you can download it on the spot as well. After the gig you can sort those new requests in to the correct playlists for future use. I use that exact system and it works great for me. Hope that helps.
is there a way that when i plug my usb into the cdj and open a playlist my music comes up alphabeticlly? it only comes up in the order ive put them into rekordbox cheers
Cool tutorial mate ... Without stating the obvious .. As i havnt been able to watch all the video .... You have to burn a pre built set to two usbs right ????? The same set on two USB sticks and then just go down one track per time as you mix from track to track ?
Wow, thank you very much for sharing these tips ! Question : I currently bring my controller, but seeing that most clubs use more or less the same CDJs, i am thinking to start using the club's equipment from now on. So, if i add my cue points ,and transfer the playlist into USB or sd card, will all Pioneer CDJs definitely read them, or should i carry cds with me too ?
+Zeena Christy Hi Zeena, Pioneer gear is great, if you build everything in Rekordbox then all modern Pioneer CDJ's will read them. Thinking back I have used some pretty old CDJ's in the past that have had no probs with my Rekordbox-formatted sticks. I actually find cue points to be unreliable no matter what system I'm using so I usually just cue manually at gigs - so if that's a big deal look in to how to get those nailed with Rekordbox. My workflow these days is to take sticks and headphones to clubs, a controller and laptop to parties for portability (I'm on a motorbike). FYI, Serato and Rekordbox play fine with each other i.e. you can drag and drop between them.
+Dj Brettski Thank you for your help.Cue points are important to me, because i play a lot of dark progressive, the oldschool type, which has loads of melodies and very little instrumental parts to mix in the next track. But as you say, i should look into how to get the cue points nailed with Rekordbox, or try to do them manually. Many thanks again for your time :)
Hi im doing my first gig using usbs tonight, i exported a playlist from rekordbox to usb, but it put each track in its own folder rather than one folder with all the tracks in the playlist, is this normal? how will it look on the cdjs? wlll they all be in one list on the cdjs or will i have to manually go through each folder to get to the tracks? Thanks
You've done your gig by now so will have found this out, but a Rekordbox-organized USB does not look like a conventional one in terms of file structure if you open it through an operating system like Windows. Look at the structure in Rekordbox ('Devices') - that's how it will appear on a Pioneer deck.
I was worried about the same issue! When I would look at my usb screen on the mac, it would show each song in it's own vortex of folders- and I thought "oh no! How am I going to have time to go through each and every folder every time??" thank you.
GjestarOfficial It's worrying when you see it for the first time - apparently it's the reason Rekordbox is so slow to write all that stuff to your usb... :-/
I have a question, I was trying to have my tracks analyze through Rekordbox but it will take 232 hours to complete. That's over 9 days. Is there another way?
Thnx for the video was really helpful man, only I don't get the clone from windows for a extra copy of your memorystick. You were right about the copy I did and it failed, can you explain the easy way? Thnx cheers.
It's not a flaw in Rekordbox, it's your USB flash drive that is slow. Buy one with more read/write -speed and it works much better both for Rekordbox to write onto the drive and for the CDJ's to read off the drive while you're in a venue playing.
Would it hurt for Pioneer developers to add a 'track pairs' (for tracks that transition well together) playlist that allows you to drag tracks into and separates them as pairs? I thought a 'track pairs' playlist in Rekordbox could be useful. You can do it with a regular playlist but I'm sure the developers could simplify it.
Well explained video Bret it has helped a lot, maybe you can help me out.? If you import 2-3 folders of music which have a lot of the same music files, what would be the easiest way to separate and remove the extra files you don't need..?? Thanks in advance..
Hey Brettski, So i have a common problem that i face, i like to see the wav files on my CDJ's whenever i'm playing (Read: OCD's) But i'm never able to see the wav(Graphic representation). Any advise on the subject?
+Jai Dev Gupta okay a bit off topic but here's my 2p's worth - sounds like an inherent issue with WAV's / the CDJ's you're using. Personally I'd just convert to 320kbps mp3. Can you notice a discernable difference in sound quality between the two? More importantly can your audience? Is it enough of a difference to justify not being able to see the waveform? Your call until Pioneer come up with a firmware update to solve your issue.
Aaah. Nice. The audience out here in India is very much used to hearing crap sound. Not so surprisingly. But I figured a way out. Through a few tutorials. Understood where I was messing up. Thanks a bunvh
For anyone else reading and curious of the solution. What likely happened here was your playlists were not properly exported to the USB. If you have are using the latest Rekordbox with the DJ add-on make sure you are in the "Export" view and NOT "Performance." this would be in the top left. If you haven't activated the new DJ add-on through trial or paying for the upgrade then disregard that. Next to insure proper exporting you can right click (PC) or Command Click (Mac) your playlists and "Export playlist to X:" With X being the drive letter of your USB or SD card you are wanting the tracks on. When missing this step you may still have the tracks on the flash drive but technically it is what I would call a "Vanilla" folder and not a "Rekordbox" folder. A "Vanilla" folder can be navigated to on a CDJ but will not have playlists, saved cue points, or the much needed WAV form display
Is it possible to just analyze my already existing tracks on my USB? So that the information is correct on my cdj's? I don't want to sit and empty and refill my usb sticks, just... analyze what I have
+Abusive Sloth I know what you mean but the short answer is 'no' and I think it's pretty risky to just keep your music on a stick anyway (more on that in a second). CDJ's will read your sticks of course, Rekordbox is more about analysing the BPM accurately, labelling, creating playlists etc. Think about it like you're using iTunes and you want iTunes to analyse your library on your USB rather than your hard drive - not really the idea. Either way, I think it's highly risky to have your music just on a USB stick - they can and do fail. Even if it's just for backup, get your stuff on your computer. While it's there, maybe let Rekordbox take a shot at analysing it... maybe even put back on your USB... ;-)
As far as I'm aware the beatgrid info Rekordbox stores is for the use of CDJ's; you'll have to do it again for Traktor. Worth checking on the NI support site though, lovely idea!
@Andre Konings : Google is your friend, but here's a free image writing program www.osforensics.com/tools/write-usb-images.html and if you need to make the image before using that to write here's a free image creation program - www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html - see how nice am I to you guys???
Is this really the best way to filter tracks by BPM and key? I recently got a Pioneer XDJRX and it seems there isn't a way to simply view all tracks by BPM (like how traktor can by simply clicking BPM at the top of the playlist). It's alphabetical, and that's it, unless I'm missing something....
+David D Personally I use CDJ's but I assume it's the same. I access playlists, which are contained in folders as you see in the video. I don't get the the equipment to do any of the sorting (filtering) for me, as I've already arranged it all myself.
+STRANGE CO. Hi! You've probably sorted your playlist with the wrong column. Try clicking on the number column, usually on the far left. I've had the same issue when dragging / dropping the other way (R'box - Serato).
+DEE JAY GENTO Check on the forums, tech stuff like that is answered and kept up to date (so long as you only delete the app should be fine but like I say check)
hey, I had the old Rekordbox , and now my library just went all messed up !! My question is i have a USB with all my playlists !! can i export it to my playlist on rekordbox ?
I'm Using Rekordbox 4.2.2 i have my own playlists. my question is that i'm not able to export my Playlists to an External Toshiba Hard Disk Drive 500GB with NTFS format. Rekordbox can't read it as device. can you help me to solve this Problem. thank you
A bit off-topic Charbel, but for the record I always format my drives as FAT when using external devices, whether CDJ's or BluRay players or whatever. My Mac also plays nice with FAT; I suggest reformatting and trying that.
sorry for bothering again, the hard disk drive after formatting it to FAT 32 it works fine with Rekordbox, but when inserting it in the CDJ 850 K version 1.12 it read it but while accessing the playlists & songs it dosen't load it and gives me error... can you help me with this case if happens to you... thx
Charbel Zreiby Sorry you'll have to go to the Pioneer forums, sounds like a firmware error on the 850's maybe?? I've only ever used USB sticks on my CDJ's.
Hi Mac, are you using CDJ's? I'd Google that question and check out replies on the Pioneer forums for your respective gear, but for me I always use USB sticks, not hard drives that need to draw power and don't like things like power cuts, accidentally being knocked out of their USB sockets etc. Use your hard drive as your library and take USB's to gigs, maybe with your laptop as backup if you're taking requests and want to cover yourself. Like I say though, if you really want to go that route check out the Pioneer forums.
Great vid!! will hopefully help me in my record box understanding . But i still don't get why Pioneer couldn't develop software you just right clicked on the usb with all your music on and just analysed it then its done , the whole record box concept to me fails BIG TIME , it does both things badly! It makes organising your music MUCH more complicated than it needs to be and at the same time totally more effort to just get the most out of your CDJs? which i think should have this software built in the player itself. For the money we pay for them its CRAZY.
Hi GREAT VIDEO BUT I AM HAVING PROBLEMS. I AM USINF A 32GB SANDISK USB STICK WITH REKORDBOX 3 ON A WINDOWS COMPUTER i HAVE A XDJR1 AND HAVING PROBLEMS TRANSFERRING MUSIC ON TO IT. I HAVE TRIED ON A NUMBER OCCASIONS WITH NO LUCK. AT ONE POINT I DELETED THE USB STICK, FORMATTED IT AND PUT THE USB BACK IN TO COMPUTER AND TRIED TRANSFERRING THE SAME MUSIC ON TO. IT THEN SAYS ON SCREEN FILE ALREADY EXISTS ON USB. THIS CAN NOT BE RIGHT AS THERE IS NOTHING ON IT. WHEN I DO TRY AND TRANSFER IT COMES UP ON LAPTOP SCREEN CREATE LEBRARY, FAILED TO WRITE TO USB AND THIS IS COMMON FOR ME AND I HAVE USED A FEW DIFFERENT USB STICKS WITH NO LUCK.. IT THEN SAYS PLEASE DISCONNECT THE USB DEVICE. CAN YOU HELP PLEASE JOHN
***** just format your USB as FAT, plug in to your laptop and use the 'sync' facility in RB3. For technical issues with the XDJR1 you'll have to go to the Pioneer forum on that one bud ;-)
how do u get songs onto rekordbox from a website? do you have to pay for every song you want? that sounds expensive Can you make a tutorial on how to transfer songs to rekordbox program from a website? please. that would help a lot.
Hi Raymond - you import songs on to Rekordbox from your hard-drive, just like iTunes. It's not expensive at all - I spend $10 - $30 a week on new tunes, which even in Thailand is less than you earn for 1 gig. I personally like to drag in to iTunes so I know it's copied to the right location (and I'm covered in case Rekordbox has a fit, which it can), then drag from iTunes in to Rekordbox. Easy.
Okay, just this once. Google - "XDJ-R1 rekordbox cannot see folders only playlists" 1st Hit - "[SOLVED] Rekordbox on a usb using XDJ-R1" Link: forums.pioneerdj.com/entries/25135763--SOLVED-Rekordbox-on-a-usb-using-XDJ-R1 Answer: Fully format the USB using Disk Utility to FAT32 (ensure you have a back up of whats on the USB if you don't have a local copy). Then re-export the data to the USB stick from rekordbox. How nice am I to you lot? HOW nice??
yeah I use very quick Patriots, actually find that things are slightly improved in the new version of Rekordbox to be fair (3). Still in no way practical if in a rush before a gig!!!
Dj Brettski pleased someone is having luck i cannot get mine to link up on 3.0,2 even with checking everything i dont know whats the matter with it !!! firewall seems fine ive got these listed psv nfd.exe ,psv linksysmgr.exe, ebd streamed.exe and the record box 3 symbol any idea or not a clue lol.
jason rutter Sorry Jason I don't understand your question, what's the problem? Try the Pioneer Rekordbox site for techinical stuff, great site and helpful community.
Great tips, does anyone knows How to Delete all songs from Rekorbox, not from The usb,sd card etc,FROM REKORBOX,I can delete one at time,I would like to delete them all, clean Rekordbox,if anyone knows please share the secret.,Thanks Great tips.,
+Dj Brettski Fantastic,Thank you very much for your Help,I'd like to add,How it worked for me instead of CTRL-A I've used COMMAND-A my computer it's a Macbook, somehow changes a Bit,and It Worked just fine.,Thanks again man.,
Dude, arranging hip hop in bpm and house in key... changed my life. you're magical
JOPLN Wicked mate really good to hear. Thanks for taking the time to say so as well.
Brilliant, clear and concise video on Rekordbox. As someone who had never used it before, I wanted to say thanks for saving me a lot of time and hassle!
+saintlysimon Great stuff thank you and glad it helped!
Very helpful and clearly explained. I just started using Rekordbox and this helps me "get my head around" how to organize my music. Thank you!
Amy P my pleasure and thank you for the positive feedback, means a lot!! :-)
Wow this is 1 of the best and most comprehensive videos on RUclips and makes me think of rethinking how I have my folders thanks v much
Paul Mcfadden No problem Paul, glad it helped :-)
Great tip, I'm new to using Rekordbox and you broke it down easy for me
Cool happy to help :-)
Hi Phil,
This is what I'd do - start with folders as per your genres: Disco/Soul, R&B/Hip Hop, House/Deep House/Electro House, Motown/Soul/Funk, Rock/Alternative and Pop.
Hi Brett
Thanks for taking the time to post that.
Stuff like Freemasons etc
All in all the system is already working better for me since I saw your original video, maybe just needs a bit of tweaking with the chamelot system so if you can shed a bit more light on that would be great.
Cheers
Phil
Dj Brettski just checked that out looks impressive, I'm converted lol thanks for your tips :)
did you write the camelot numbers (8A,..) manually? Because in my rekordbox there arent numbers there are things like Gm, Fm, Abm and so on
Thanks for the tips on creating playlists m8.
Have fun!!!
Dj Brettski
yeah i feel the same about that subject, it's way cooler if you only play with your cdjs (with usbs) instead of an laptop with extra software etc, it's like bringing an extra wheel to your ferrari ;)...the cdjs are made for that and have a lot of features already inside
k♪bah
I know some guys that sue Serrato so need the laptop which is fair enough, but if you're using CDJ's as easy to use as the Pioneer's you owe it to yourself to leave the computer behind.
Dj Brettski
yeah, i would be way to scared that my pc/mac crashes. I also have a spare usb stick in case of failure, but I've never had to use it
wow- easy the most informed rekordbox vid to date... big help !!
thanks mate
Really pleased to hear that - no idea when you make these things if they'll be useful so it's great when I get positive feedback. Cheers!
I'm using Rekordbox for the first time and this video was an amazing help!! Thank you :D I was going insane....
Really glad it helped you, thanks for the feedback :-)
Hey your video is old.. your system is perfect! I really feel enlightend... and reliefed (im sorting out all my music these days ) :D
+Oussama El Guezbari yeah I know old video now but still relevent and still seems to help people. Glad it works for you!
One of the better vids Ive seen mate, nice 1.
I love the way uploading a tune to a usb stick is a bitch, thanks pioneer!
tHANK YOU!
Fuck... All this time I've been using playlists only...I didn't even knoe you could have folders.
I had 128 playlists of all different genres, was driving me insane!
Thanks so much.
Josh Murphy Yep, been there haha, folders are the way ahead. have fun!
Thanks for the help Brettski!
My pleasure, cheers for the feedback :-)
enjoying the tips would come in handy setting up for the first time ,thanks
@Dan TheMan - if I understand you correctly, your music is on a laptop and you have purchased a bigger USB stick so want to start again. In that case just make sure you've got your folder structure right like in the video and drag over to the new (formatted FAT) USB stick. Maybe keep the smaller one as your spare for gigs ;-)
Hello DJ Bret Turner
Thanx for this video. It was really helpful to me.
Thanks for the tips,
Greatings Yvo Flapper
Thanks a lot for the video Brettski. I had one query. I mostly play House and wanted to know if this order of arranging music would work?
1. Genre (Deep,Tech,Prog etc)
2. BPM
3. Key
Thanks again for the video!
Thankyou for sharing. Excellent presentation. Love the accent. Cheers man..
No probs mate, thank you for your feedback glad it helped :-)
great video my friend... quite helpful and very simple
+Manish Patwa Great stuff thanks for the comment :-)
amazing! really clear and well thought out. thanks man. big ups!
Cheers - I know it's demonstrated on an old version of Rekordbox but glad to hear the advice is still relevent :-)
Really informative this upload, thanks!
No probs, thanks for taking the time to say so :-)
very useful video, thanks
My pleasure glad you liked it, happy to help!!
Ok, thx very much! :)
Hi brett. gret video.. I've being using rekordbox on and off for a while . Once I set up my playlist I have not been back on it.. Now I have a bigger usg and want to start again.. When all the mp3 are only on the PC.. How to I transfer them onto the USB so that Rekorbox will find them in the playlist etc ?
Cheers
How do you clone a USB on Windows as opposed to copy and paste? Do I need software?
some amazing advice thank you!!
GREAT VIDEO
Quick question. What's a good site or pool to join to get music. I'm new and I think I want to go Dutch house and soulful house.
Thanks for the video man.
+Alex Robertson No probs
What do you do when a track has multiple artists or featured artists?
Hope that helps.
is there a way that when i plug my usb into the cdj and open a playlist my music comes up alphabeticlly? it only comes up in the order ive put them into rekordbox
cheers
Nice! Tnx for sharing this video!
+Furest ZD No probs glad it was useful!
Cool tutorial mate ... Without stating the obvious .. As i havnt been able to watch all the video .... You have to burn a pre built set to two usbs right ????? The same set on two USB sticks and then just go down one track per time as you mix from track to track ?
Jamie Vorne Ignore that my sweet child .... I have just watched the video all through :- )))))))))))))))
Wow, thank you very much for sharing these tips !
Question :
I currently bring my controller, but seeing that most clubs use more or less the same CDJs, i am thinking to start using the club's equipment from now on.
Dj Brettski Yeah cheers it worked out perfect, was just worried because my cds were stolen so i had no backup, thanks :)
I was worried about the same issue! When I would look at my usb screen on the mac, it would show each song in it's own vortex of folders- and I thought "oh no! How am I going to have time to go through each and every folder every time??" thank you.
pissdrunk1988
No problem :-)
GjestarOfficial
It's worrying when you see it for the first time - apparently it's the reason Rekordbox is so slow to write all that stuff to your usb...
Buy one with more read/write -speed and it works much better both for Rekordbox to write onto the drive and for the CDJ's to read off the drive while you're in a venue playing.
no its rekordbox which is fucking slow, i bought a fast flash drive
Then explain how I had very long exporting times before, but very short after I bought an sandisk extreme 64gb.. :)
compare exporting 100 tracks with rekordbox and the same 100 tracks with the finder on your mac or pc
thx! one question: are you really playing music which is lower than 320kb at a gig??? (just wondering)
;)
Would it hurt for Pioneer developers to add a 'track pairs' (for tracks that transition well together) playlist that allows you to drag tracks into and separates them as pairs? I thought a 'track pairs' playlist in Rekordbox could be useful. You can do it with a regular playlist but I'm sure the developers could simplify it.
I'm running into many issues for cloning my usb
I spent hours trying to clone my usb on mac el Capitan and ended up having to export it manually again
Great vid mate
Can you explain how/where you clone the flash drive on a Mac please ?
Cheers.
Well explained video Bret it has helped a lot, maybe you can help me out.? If you import 2-3 folders of music which have a lot of the same music files, what would be the easiest way to separate and remove the extra files you don't need..?? Thanks in advance..
Which version of rekordbox is it?
Hey Brettski,
So i have a common problem that i face, i like to see the wav files on my CDJ's whenever i'm playing (Read: OCD's) But i'm never able to see the wav(Graphic representation).
I don't want to sit and empty and refill my usb sticks, just... analyze what I have
+Abusive Sloth same problem ...
While it's there, maybe let Rekordbox take a shot at analysing it... maybe even put back on your USB... ;-)
Great vind, thanks, but one problem, i see THE playlists. But, i can't find my folders in remotebox app.
Can I use this software to place cues and beat grids for my music and transfer them into Traktor Pro 2.6.8? Thanks I appreciate the help!
TOO AWESOME! :D
Thanks bud! :-D
Hello Brettski!
Can i export a ordered tracklist with rekordbox?
I export but the tracklist is disordered :/
What can i do?
Thank so much!
+STRANGE CO. Hi! You've probably sorted your playlist with the wrong column. Try clicking on the number column, usually on the far left. I've had the same issue when dragging / dropping the other way (R'box - Serato).
Thank U! ;)
Is there any way of highlighting tracks to drag over to playlist instead of doing them one by one ?
Ctrl or Cmd + Click on all the track you want to drag in the playlist
Thx man.if i unistall rekordbox and reinstall again do i have same playlists that i had before? is there any way to have it like i had before?
+DEE JAY GENTO Check on the forums, tech stuff like that is answered and kept up to date (so long as you only delete the app should be fine but like I say check)
Having problems reloading tags so i can have mixed in key analyze all my traks and have them all ready for me in Rekordbox can you help
Yeah I have MIK write the key to the comments tag, occasionally it doesn't and I do it manually but I find it works for about 95%.
oh ok cool thanks will try that
Thanks Victor, that's an interesting idea I'll see what I can do :-)
hey,
I had the old Rekordbox , and now my library just went all messed up !!
My question is i have a USB with all my playlists !! can i export it to my playlist on rekordbox ?
Iyad Sayes Hi Iyad, sorry I missed this. Did you manage to transfer everything from the USB?
Hey Dj Brettski can you help me out? How do you rename your folders? :/ Btw great vid man thanks :)
+Shane Mc Grath just click on the text, should highlight and re-type.
hey its reallying amazing video but can you tell me how to make folders and playliset into that for eg hip0-100 100-110 etx ???
I'm Using Rekordbox 4.2.2 i have my own playlists. my question is that i'm not able to export my Playlists to an External Toshiba Hard Disk Drive 500GB with NTFS format. Rekordbox can't read it as device. can you help me to solve this Problem.
thank you
A bit off-topic Charbel, but for the record I always format my drives as FAT when using external devices, whether CDJ's or BluRay players or whatever. My Mac also plays nice with FAT; I suggest reformatting and trying that.
yeah thank you for your help. it works on FAT. thank you for your tips
Charbel Zreiby
No probs
sorry for bothering again, the hard disk drive after formatting it to FAT 32 it works fine with Rekordbox, but when inserting it in the CDJ 850 K version 1.12 it read it but while accessing the playlists & songs it dosen't load it and gives me error... can you help me with this case if happens to you...
thx
Charbel Zreiby
Sorry you'll have to go to the Pioneer forums, sounds like a firmware error on the 850's maybe?? I've only ever used USB sticks on my CDJ's.
Hey DJ bretsky can I use my 2 TB hard drive?
Hi Mac, are you using CDJ's? I'd Google that question and check out replies on the Pioneer forums for your respective gear, but for me I always use USB sticks, not hard drives that need to draw power and don't like things like power cuts, accidentally being knocked out of their USB sockets etc. Use your hard drive as your library and take USB's to gigs, maybe with your laptop as backup if you're taking requests and want to cover yourself. Like I say though, if you really want to go that route check out the Pioneer forums.
Thanx!
Great vid!! will hopefully help me in my record box understanding .
For the money we pay for them its CRAZY.
thank you!
+tsewang gyaltsen My pleasure glad to help
Hi
GREAT VIDEO BUT I AM HAVING PROBLEMS. I AM USINF A 32GB SANDISK USB STICK WITH REKORDBOX 3 ON A WINDOWS COMPUTER
i HAVE A XDJR1 AND HAVING PROBLEMS TRANSFERRING MUSIC ON TO IT.
CAN YOU HELP PLEASE
JOHN
Easy.
Sorting folders by bpm never mades sense to me as that can be sorted in the columns, but got ur stuff neater that i do.
good video thanks
Oscar Roberto Brouwer Thank you happy to help :-)
can you please show me how to delete playlist and songs off rekcordbox
Delete button, pretty sure ;-)
This doesn't work on the XDJ-R1, I can't see the subfolders on my R1, I can only see all my playlists!
Okay, just this once.
Google - "XDJ-R1 rekordbox cannot see folders only playlists"
1st Hit - "[SOLVED] Rekordbox on a usb using XDJ-R1"
Link: forums.pioneerdj.com/entries/25135763--SOLVED-Rekordbox-on-a-usb-using-XDJ-R1
Answer: Fully format the USB using Disk Utility to FAT32 (ensure you have a back up of whats on the USB if you don't have a local copy).
Then re-export the data to the USB stick from rekordbox.
How nice am I to you lot? HOW nice??
thought about using faster usbs for music transfer there brettski try scan disc extreme pro very fast upload speeds .
yeah I use very quick Patriots, actually find that things are slightly improved in the new version of Rekordbox to be fair (3). Still in no way practical if in a rush before a gig!!!
Dj Brettski

jason rutter Sorry Jason I don't understand your question, what's the problem? Try the Pioneer Rekordbox site for techinical stuff, great site and helpful community.
Also I don't know why you'd sort folders/playlists by BPM like you've done when you can just press "menu" on CDJ and then "sort by BPM" :)
