Silas, you crack me up, we know you can't go to any auction and not buy anything. I'm surprised your wife doesn't put a shock collar on you and go with you to the auction just to keep you from bidding!
Hello once more Mr Silas. Thumbs up and away we go. Seventy one and I feel like a child in a sweet shop. My thanks to your family for letting your man show people like me and many others from around the world, old US cars and other cool stuff from Kansas.
For a man who didn't want to spend any money you sure splashed out a bundle but will surely reap the benefits in the long run . The Chevelle is going to prove to be the wisest move of them all as no matter how you dispose of it will be a bread winner . Thank you for a very interesting video and a peek into the life of a scrap dealer on a roll . Take care , till next time , Stuart in Canada ..
Those modular 4.6/5.4 engines can go at least 600k miles with nothing more than regular oil changes. From the looks of it, this one has plenty of life left.
I finally went to a local swap meet that people kept telling me I was missing out on. Well I didn't miss out on anything because the prices people were asking was insane. Looks like a lot of deal there for sure.
Yeah, that sucks, I guess they don't mind hauling it back home. There's a large swap meet in Portland Or. Every April Portland International Raceway...
I stopped at 6:32. I think the fact that you found those headlight thingies is pretty cool. If that arrow was reasonable I would have picked that had I been there. I see where one of the days in your home town it will be a high of 39....YIH! Too cold for me. Thanks for sharing this little adventure.
The old radios can be converted. A place called Ricks Radio Conversions does them up to look like factory, but updated to have bluetooth and usb or I pod. He has a RUclips and Facebook page.
Very glad you put this on your main chanel. Maybe the next auction or swap meet you should start saying you are going to spend a ton of money. You will still end up buying the same amount but feel great you spent so little. Great video as always. Bart from Soth Africa.
"failed at that mission", dropped my coffee lmao. I appreciate the adventure here man. Havent been to a swap meet since the early 90s. Just not around here anymore. Miss those days, and being able to walk around salvage yards to window shop or treasure hunt.
I had one of those Edelbrock crossram intakes back in the early '70s, except mine was side-by-side, not offset like that. I had thought those offset carbs were original Chevrolet, and the side-by-side carbs Edelbrock aftermarket. I had that intake on a '65 Vette 327 with a '69 4-bolt main later model bottom end & solid lifter cam (remember those?), I think Hooker headers that curved out to meet the factory sidepipes, and in front of 3:08 gears. Between Rantoul, IL & Oil City, PA I could get about 20 MPG @ 80 MPH just cruising. I filled up with $0.19 regular gas a few times during a gas war & then was about empty when arriving home where I would fill up with Sunoco 260 for the weekend.
You do a great job videoing going to swap meets and auctions I enjoy them so much and your knowledge of older Auto Parts is amazing thank you for sharing the prices you pay and sometimes the prices you sell them for it is very interesting
Recently while watching another RUclipsr channel, he showed just the outside of the Kansas Aviation Museum in Wichita, Kansas. Looks like an interesting place to show us on the second channel.
I've really enjoyed this one Silas, I absolutely love going to swapmeets and auctions here in the UK. I very rarely come home without something interesting. David in the UK.
I also tend to spend too much at swap meets although I bring a shopping list. The ones here like Tri-State I’ll go early, get what I’m looking for, bring it back to my truck and go back in to socialize. I also usually go alone and that helps with concentration on what I’m looking for
Wow Don Silas, you have everything there in Kansas. Those items were gone from here at least 10 years ago. It seems though, its like Maine, you can't get there from here! I'm two days drive from you here in Western NY. I don't know how you do it all. Church, Family, Filming, editing, yard work and all. I'd forgotten about my 2 speed bicycle as a kid.
Silas = I will buy nothing - but can't help myself - wow - Tons of great Smalls - super Great and that very Interesting Malibu ! You bought some very Cool Stuff - really Enjoyable Video - very Interesting to Watch ! Many Cheers from Australia !!!! PS - the Malibu was my Favorite Item for sure !!!!
A bit of history Silas. This what I've read as a classic car buff. When Chevrolet installed the 396 big block into the 201 65 Chevelles as part of the Z16 Package, only one was a convertible. Many Bowtie fans consider it the Holy Grail of all the Chevys produced. The lone Z16 convertible was said to have been obtained by a top GM executive shortly after it was built. Unlike it's two door brothers, the convertible was never seen in public and it's whereabouts are not known to this day.
These z16s only came with the rarest L78 375 HP 396 made. 11 to 1 forged, square port heads, AND with the only 375 HP hydraulic cam that GM ever made. EVERY other 1965 396 was rated at 425 HP solid lifter. 1966 thru 70, they advertised L78 at 375 hp solid lifter, rated at a lower RPM, even tho it was exactly the same as the 425HP. Also the rare 1 year narrowed 12 bolt.
The most valuble part on that Chevelle is the cross ram intake. I can't remember ever seeing one for a big block Chevy. Pretty goofy that someone put a double pumper and a vacuum secondary on it. I can't imagine that it ran very well. Probably doesn't even have a proper cam to work with the dual quad. You did well to get rid of the whole car and not mess with parting it out IMO. '64s are just not worth the big bucks.
I watched a video of a car show /swap meet in spring, in Iowa or Ill. or ? Must have been a table with a hundred stainless headlite rings $2 ea. Next time I'll pay more attention for you. You probably could have bought the whole table for $1.50 ea!
Pump each cylinder with a mixture of pb blaster and atf fluid and let it set also drain the oil 🛢 and fill the base with cheap atf also and let it set.
You can find 65 chevelles a lot of them. To me the 64 is the better looking year out of all of them. I wish I had the money because I would offer you $5,000 for it but I just don't have it right now. But that car could be a wicked Street machine😊
As a 75 year old geezer, who owns a 66 drop top, and one of my sons had a 65 , 427, ( now a 67 Nova with a LS) the first generation is more boxy looking ( as is the Nova’s) ….it’s all good ….
Last time I went to a Car Parts auction/yard sale type event, I too went with good intentions of not buying anything. I told my wife, "Just going to look, honey!" And by the time I left I was a $1,000.00 lighter! It happens to the best of us. 🙂 🙂
I love how he says he bought too much, but gonna walk around one more time to see if there’s anything “he needs”… Spent $50 on some covers he don’t even know what they go to… reminds me of my old man.
GM did this because of the emissions standards and if the engine was less than 400 cubes it had to have catalytic converters and emissions charcoal canisters and leaner tuned carburetor and timing set back on them to detune for emissions and GM figured out that if they took the 396 which was actually closer to 402 in cubes and called it a 402 like some trucks were badged they were able to sell them without the emissions on them and skate by the emissions crap .
@peteloomis8456 I'm not aware of any truck ever having a 402 badge, if they had the 402 engine the badge said 400, if you know of any please show me. I'm not saying they never did just saying I've never seen it but we learn new stuff all the time.
Silas you tickle me, I think you jinx yourself saying you're not going to buy anything. But you find a bunch of cool stuff. I'm wondering what that trailer went for you were bidding on. You can't hurt yourself buying a trailer at the right price. Folks seemed to be friendly, good to visit with folks. I have to stay away from auctions, I love them and buy more than I need. Always enjoy your auction videos. Stay safe and GOD bless
You got alot of goodies there ,those old Ford & Chevy 3/4 ton hubcaps was a good find ,i sold those Chevy caps for way more & i had several NOS of the Ford hubcaps & they got sold to a overseas buyer for way more than you paid for the set ,sometimes i rent those types of caps & old police car hubcaps to a motion picture car company near me when they need them
Whew... I love following you along with your impulsiveness, there's a couple things that we hold in common... lol. KUDO'S for keeping me in it till the end! Respectfully, Seth
Silas, nice haul. The 396, 402,427, 454 all share the same rods and heads but the crank and bore are the difference. 396 with a 454 crank is a 427,. Most of the sizes are just interchanges of bore and stroke .a 402 is a .060 over 396.
Silas the 4400 truck on the trailer reminds me of a dealership in New York. I was there the day the took photos of a Mercedes-Benz that was in a wreck. The dealership took photos of the good side for advertising. The cars was a total.
What was your favorite item that I got in this video?
The swap meet
🤔
The galvanized gas can.
the 64 ss To bad it was not a 65 Z16
I used to go to that swapmeet and sell but it's always to cold and I stay with my stuff
The Chevelle's my favorite I see you sold it. .327 would gone really nice into that car. I'm a small block guy.
Bought your own stuff back , I've done that too!! 😅😅😅
"I don't like pricing other people's stuff".... I love it and I'll have to remember that one. Good job Silas.
Ya don't want to insult, but don't want to offer too much
Silas, you crack me up, we know you can't go to any auction and not buy anything. I'm surprised your wife doesn't put a shock collar on you and go with you to the auction just to keep you from bidding!
Why, he makes $$$$$

I love the swap meet videos because it gives me a chance to see all the school old stuff. Keep them coming.
Fun Fun Fun! Love going to auctions with you! Thanks for keeping us old guys entertained.
Nice grab on that Chevelle! That one was a definite money maker for you. Thanks for another awesome video!
Nice to see cash is still king at swap meets and local auctions.

That Chevelle is super cool! You got a good deal on it.
You got quite a deal on the Chevelle. It is a limited edition. worth a lot more!
Great video, thanks for taking us along.
I'm in love with the chevelle. I would love to hear that thing running.
Who ever got that ford pickup, that was behind your car, for 5,500 got one hell of a deal.
5250 actually, they were asking for a 5500 bid and didn't get it!
what year and miles on it

you are correct about the bbc 402 engine being factory bored 396 and Chevy did that and called them the 400 big block for passenger cars and trucks
