Wow... I am overwhelmed by the support this has gotten! At first, I wasn't sure if people would be interested to the point where I'd be making more videos, but after seeing this positive response from you guys, It's safe to say more is on the way. Stay tuned! Peace and Love ✌
Hey, someone will need to pick up the slack now that Couch Tomato isn't doing it (if you had heard of that channel, it was one CinemaSins shouted out 9 years ago)
I like the idea that Ben Stiller was in the recording booth and thought to himself "What if Alex the Lion was a childless dickless Hollywood actor forced to do bootcamp training for Saving Private Ryan and just mc-frickin-lost his marbles"; and that resulted in an Oscar-nominated masterpiece that got him death-threats.
Okay, leaving aside that these types of scripts follow a predetermined structure, you managed to convince me, I will never watch one of these movies again without comparing it to the other one.
Shrek 2 is also, to some degree, a deconstruction of Beauty and the Beast. (And Little Mermaid, especially as the wish-granter is voiced by someone who originally auditioned to be Ursula) Although I'd love to hear how it's like Get Out.
That's brilliant, it would make sense for directors to have skeletons of scripts they can adapt to any genre but everything really lines up here. Thanks for making a video on this, I'd never be motivated enough to scour reddit boards and find this naturally. You have a good clear voice and the editing really ties everything together well. Best of luck if you decide to make another comparison video!
I did not expect to see this as the first video on the channel, I went through the first 12 minutes thinking this was any other upload from an already established channel. Your quality is on par with well established channels. I hope your stuff comes up on my feed more often
Well for a first video i can say there’s easily some reasons you got wrong as to why Madagascar and Tropic Thunder are the same movies. In fact, there are many reasons as to why Madagascar and Tropic Thunder are two different films. For starters, the plot’s different. While both Ben Stiller movies are about characters getting stranded in the wild, that’s the only similarity between the two. Tropic Thunder’s about a bunch of washed up celebrities who‘a doing a Vietnam biopic in order to make a big comeback for each other, but gets stranded after losing the director of the movie as well as getting separated from the Demolition expert and a novel writer. Madagascar tells the story of what would happen if Zoo Animals gets stranded on the Wild. With the characters getting adjusted to the Wild and assumes it’s this perfect paradise, until they start to realize that the Wild isn’t all cracked up to be. Even the characters & themes are different. Tropic Thunder pulls a meta commentary on how celebrities get controversial, then make a comeback, and how Hollywood movies can be very problematic for an actor. Madagascar explores the basic lessons that home isn’t a place, it’s the people you care about. Tropic Thunder’s characters are mostly broken people who just so happens to be celebrities & filmmakers, and executives. Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder is just a guy who desperately wants to win an Oscar after being in a Oscar Bait as well as losing his popularity after making crappy action movies. Robert Downey Jr.’s a Method Actor who doesn’t know who he is, Jack Black’s a former comedian who hates how people think of him as the funny guy… and Tom Cruise’s an angry studio executive. There’s also a group of terrorists who holds Ben Stiller hostage for ransom. Conversely, Madagascar’s characters all bring something to the table in the first movie (Yes there are sequels to Madagascar, now shut up.). The Penguins are spy characters that serve as the important plot devices that are the sole reason why the movie started in the first place. But they also act as a slight contrast to the main characters, as their subplot is parallel to them. The Lemurs are just people who want to party a lot, and they need help from warriors so they could be freed from predators. Jada Pinket Smith plays the tough as nails hippo who’s also the voice of reason. David Schwimmer’s the worry some giraffe who eventually becomes brave in the climax. And the Chimps… are just there for some reason. The only similarities between the movies are just that they’re movies starring Ben Stiller, and they both have him interact with another celebrity. In Tropic Thunder it was Ben & RDJ, in Madagascar it was Ben & Chris Rock. Chris & Ben we’re already best friends by the time Madagascar starts, and the whole movie centers around their friendship and how it started to shatter before they patch things up in the end. Tropic Thunder had Ben & Downey as Rivals throughout the movie, who were both crazy in their own areas, before they regained their sanities in the end. That’s it. All in all, interesting video, but as a Madagascar fan, and as someone who loves Tropic Thunder… I just disagree with this.
This is a great essay & I love the conclusion that that's okay. I get that people like variety, but it makes me laugh when they constantly go to the same well & expect something drastically different. One point worth adding is that writers only get 2 - 3% of the budget & they are often constantly having to do rewrites all the way up until the final cut goes out. They show up first, leave with the team after final wrap while having all the unique qualities whittled away. If Etan Cohen & Justin Theroux found a way to paint by numbers, I'm glad for them. It's not like the average person does anything excitingly new in there day to day grind
I’m not sure how I was already subscribed to this channel despite it only having one video. I’m not mad, but I’m not disappointed either. I don’t know how I got here, but I’m glad I’m subscribed

This is fun to watch, but you can do this with a lot of movies. There's only so many tropes, character concepts and story arcs. It's all just reskins and retelling with mildly different presentations. You could do endless numbers of comparisons if you want to make this a series.
This is a first video? You could easily do one about how Fellowship of the Ring and the first Hobbit movie are the exact same movie, though they're not just the same genre, but of the same universe. The parallels are endless

Doesn't hurt that both main characters snapping are played by Ben Stiller
