Something about the first season just hits different. In some ways it feels like a different show than what came later. It's far more focused on parodying sci-fi cliches than on making fun of itself. The structure is much more intricate and there's less intentional deus ex machina. The pop culture references are subtle and aren't shoved in your face nearly as much, and most of Rick's meta moments could just as easily be dismissed as drunken ramblings. It's still cynical but in more of a playful and subversive way compared to the... for lack of a better word bitter feeling of a lot of later episodes. Season 1 is definitely my favorite in the show.

I'd disagree about Jerry. Seasons 1 and 2 were the ones only ones where Jerry was not simply a punching bag, but a regular guy, who gets thrown into this world of wackiness and danger by his father-in-law without his consent.

Season 1 and 2 felt like a fusion of Simpsons and Futurama, you had some continuity, but was mainly a problem of the week show. And the focus was actually on being funny and kept the surface level nihilism class moments few and far between. As soon as the writers added that self awareness in season 3, and firm continuity with the divorce plot line, the charm was gone.

For some reason s1 and s2 were just so fresh. It was mostly a parody of sci fi tropes and it didnt want you to take it very seriously, it just wanted to be funny and entertaining. Then the serious moments hit that much harder. But after that it became something else, it started taking itself way too seriously and trying too hard while at the same time appearing not to try? Its a bit paradoxical but this seems to be the energy of latter seasons

The writing was so good because the stakes were pretty low for Dan and Justin, and they were having a blast with it.
It’s more than just sardonic wit, the 1st season episodes had such subtle nuance to dark comedy. Somehow, they created a comedy vehicle for both existential dread and fart jokes, interwoven with epic banter. Anytime comedy is able to make me feel ashamed for laughing so hard, BRAVO!

10:11 so part of me thinks this is the time frame on when Evil Morty took out his Rick as it is when we see our Morty first stand up to our Rick
The time line would match up nicley too meaning that while in this episode is a nice moment between our Rick in Morty now with the benefit of Season 7 Hindsight we know it is also a focal point for what could have been.
If Rick hadn't let Morty have his adventure and given him a win in the end Morty could have easily been another Evil Morty
A classic episode that is only better now that we have season 7!

I always wondered if this shows downfall was that it started with such a high-note of seasons and it was just so hard to write for. Not sure if this is comparable. But I always felt it was the same thing with "Invader ZIM". The first episodes were so genius. But the right balance was just so hard to write for. Even the not finished episodes were kind of underwhelming. But the first episodes were also silly but in a "lighting in a bottle" kind of way :/ If you read out loud both premises of R&M and Invader ZIM you would not guess which episodes were dissapointing.

OK, I love this review. You talked about everything good about the first season and weren’t afraid to criticize everything you didn’t like about the first season, which I commend you for. However, there’s one mistake: I need to point out what you made. You said he never took responsibility for his actions in the Love Potion episode. I completely disagree with you. He did take responsibility for his actions. I’m not saying that just because I’m biased with my being a Morty fan; while I’m a big fan of his character, I believe you’re right about criticizing him in this episode. Though I think this episode is a deconstruction of a love potion, most people don’t believe it’s messed up until the implications of a love potion are brought up, like Morty in this episode. Anyway, I think you were wrong because when Morty called out Rick for causing this apocalypse, Rick ripped into Morty for having him make the love potion and called it a roofie. Morty was shocked and horrified by Rick’s words, and as I pointed out, he took responsibility for his actions; he stated that he caused this mess and he was going to take responsibility, and all he wanted was for Rick to take responsibility because as Morty pointed out, he chose to make the potion anyway, even though he knew it was a roofie, mixed up a bunch of nonsense and made a serum that transformed the humans race into monsters. Morty took responsibility for his actions in this episode, and all he wanted was for Rick to take responsibility for his actions as well and for him to fix the problem the two of them caused, which Rick refused to do both and just ran away to another dimension where a counterpart of his dig fix the problem.
I just wanted to point that out, and I say again, great review. I am happy to have watched it, and I can’t wait to see your reviews on the show's future seasons.

@@workinprogress1987 I remember in a fantasy series how love potions were treated as, I wouldn’t say right, but not a big deal. I liked that the implications were not ignored in that episode. I agree that love potions are messed up, and I’m glad that Rick, of all people, brought up the implications. You were right about criticizing Morty, and to his credit, I believe that when Rick called it Roofie, Morty realized the implications of what he did and was horrified. But yeah, it was a creepy thing to do, even if most people ignore or don’t realize the implications. Again, I love watching the video.
