    Captain it is sad to hear this. I told my wife a month ago with the price of Crabs being $400 to $500 a bushel and people paying it, that the state will step in and start cracking down. It’s just too much money involved now. And then you hear shutting the season down for two weeks in August, which no crabber would want. They dangle that to get you to agree something on the other end that doesn’t seem as harsh. Also remember once they take something, you won’t get it back. I will never get to trotline at night again or on Wednesday that does not have a holiday attached to it. I am all for the conservation of our crab population, but also want to see a system that looks at all the aspects and gives back when able. I understand this is your livelihood and I respect your opinions. Thank you for sharing.

    Interesting seeing such an educated crabber. You understand that the issue is society at large affecting water quality. Run offs from fertilizers used on farms is also an issue in Virginia as it creates algal bloom and dead zones.

    • @CrabdadCJ
      @CrabdadCJ  2 года назад

      I am an anomaly. I have a Bachelors in Marine Science. Worked at Md DNR for 3 years as a water quality biologist before becoming a crabber. Farms can be an issue but when you look at the cleanest part of the Bay it's the rural areas. Getting all the sewage treatment plans to remove Nitrogen is the Key to truly Saving the Bay.

    I'm sorry man but truth is commercial crabbers are killing populations, those guys on the eastern shore catch crabs by the tons everyday, and this has been going on for over 20 years. They even have youtube pages showing the process of how many crabs they pull in a day. So to blame the rec. crabber or weekender is absurd I watched this take place 1st hand with the rockfish/ striper populations and oysters.

    • @cumminsbayou
      @cumminsbayou 2 года назад

      What a load of crap. It is absolutely the guys that wanna go out for “fun” that are killing off the population. Let the men work

    • @CrabdadCJ
      @CrabdadCJ  2 года назад

      I would say it's neither. We all need to stop blaming each other and look deeper into what is going on. Science proves that recreational and commercial are not taking too many. There are other issues like dirty water that are the real problem.

    Captain c.j. down here in South Carolina they're catching giant blue females and giant blue male crab it slows down in the winter time like it does anywhere else. But crabbing down here in the south is booming do you think maybe the crabs have moved to saltier water. In the lower part of North Carolina the crabbing is doing very good. But our weather down here in South Carolina has been very hot the past week and a half

    • @CrabdadCJ
      @CrabdadCJ  2 года назад +1

      Hard to say what's going on. All the females go to the lower Bay to spawn. Then the larvae go into the Ocean. Could be getting pushed further south. Nobody knows.

    I think the crabs are moving north. We have an enormous amount of them in Rhode Island now. As an old Back River crabber, I get my fill all summer here in new england. Plus the water here is clean and salty. The crabs taste incredible.

      It’s the cheapest way politically to look like action is being taken. Maybe instead of billions going out of the country, it could be spent improving the water quality of ours? 🤷‍♂️ The benefits would be immeasurable.

    This issue is definitely a multi-variable problem. But since the imagined over-harvest is the easiest to manage, the government is of course taking the easier route. I think cat fish and white perch population in the bay contributes quite a lot a well. From now on, I am gonna take a catch and destroy to all cats.
