Nice one Basil. Neil Young is an absolute Legend, that has been rocking longer, than most any of us have been alive. Paired with another super group such as Pearl Jam, and magic happens. I love that Eddie Vedder, has done so many colaborations over the decades. This one rocks.

You sort of had to have been there to really understand. The song is simultaneously extremely topical and connected to the time it was released in, yet prophetic in ways that were completely predictable to anyone paying attention.
The meaning of the song is kind of laid out in the first couple of lines about people "shuffling their feet" and "sleeping in their shoes." Neil was talking about the decadence and arrogance of our society, and our willful blindness to it. He was talking about how the rot had begun to set in and most people could smell it but were just ignoring the things that were happening all around us and continuing to bop along "rocking in the free world" This was released a couple of years before the Soviet Union suddenly evaporated overnight. It was a time when we saw everything about ourselves in comparison to the Soviet Union and the Warsaw pact countries as well as China and their sphere of influence in Southeast Asia. But that wasn't the only barometer of our world. Things were not going right here in the United States. We had largely just disengaged with the Middle East and put it out of our minds after the Iran hostage crisis. But the middle-east hadn't forgotten about us. The shadows of 9/11 (only twelve years down the road) were all around us but we weren't paying any attention. Much of our country was still preoccupied with the greed and consumerism that so typified the 1980s. But all around us crack was devouring entire communities. The Styrofoam boxes being produced by the millions for our convenience food was literally destroying our only protection from being scorched off the face of the Earth by the Sun. Whereas before, homelessness had been mainly confined to people with serious substance-abuse (primarily alcohol) now there were more and more people homeless because the social safety-net had been stripped in order to give free money to the wealthiest amongst us. We had George Bush the first running for office talking meaningless nonsense about "a thousand points of light" whilst at the same time "a man of the people" (Jesse Jackson) was encouraging us to "keep hope alive."
This song was Neil Young screaming at the top of his voice two words to America: "WAKE UP!!!"
This song was very topical and tied to its time but it was screaming accurate prophecies at a deafening volume...
    And we still haven't listened!!!

Bush1's "Kindler, Gentler Nation" speech was also mocked in this song.

This version has always been my favourite. Sound quality isn’t the best but you just had the feeling that it was so loud. I remember hearing this a couple of days after the mtv awards on a VHS copy and I was obsessed!

I was watching the show as it aired. I was in bed as I had to get up very early for work..but I was waiting for PJ to perform. Well..they woke me the F up that was for sure. Couldn't sleep after that. It's one of my fave versions cos it's very raw.

That's a good performance of this song. You're on the right track with the meaning, I think. To me it's talking about all the issues we face in America. With all our power and might we can do anything we set out to do. However, we don't seem to care about real issues affecting the people. There's homeless sleeping in their shoes, drug addiction killing the future of our youth that get tossed away like trash and pollution killing the planet. We just keep rocking on oblivious to it all. Pretty good lyrics. We'll done to you as well.

I remember when this was broadcast, and we recorded it on vcr, as you did back then.
I was just a teen (old person reminiscing noise) and very into metal like death metal and thrash... But I watched this, kinda jaded like, yeah rock whatever... Then Neil has his seizure and my entire world view changed. I was like, wtf was that? After the show was over I watched that solo so many times... Absolutely jaw dropping.
Guys like him have shaped my entire sound. Guys who just make these sounds come from the guitar that aren't guitar noises... Neil Young, Roland S Howard, Akira Yamaoka, Jim Jarmusch, Blixa Bargeld... I sound nothing like any of them, but they made me appreciate approaching music from a different angle that wasn't about technicality but about sound.
Anyway, the end of the performance completely encapsulated what everyone thought of awards shows.
We all knew MTV was a complete sham at that stage.

This was best MTV music awards show had Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers all in this one show. I think it was 1993. This should have been last one.
