After The Gold Rush is a great album. FYI.

There are some pretty time period specific references in the lyrics. The thousand points of light and kinder, gentler machine gun hand were direct shots at George HW Bush's (Bush 1) campaign slogans.

I had tickets back in 1990 to go see Neil on this tour but never wound up going... What a regret.

Neil can be a beast and also the opposite. He's amazing in concert. Loved him since I heard his Harvest album in early 70s.

The song is featured on the album Freedom, released in 1989, and is one of the anti-system anthems that left their mark on the history of the late 20th century. An unforgettable riff!
Neil Young drew his inspiration for the song from George Bush's (father) campaign slogans, using his promises and extracts from his introductory speech to the White House in a sarcastic way to criticise him and his administration.
But like Bruce Springsteen's Born Is The USA, the song has been misused on several occasions by pro-Republican parties, most recently when Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the White House. Neil Young has always quickly retorted and protested, pointing out the rebellious aspect of his lyrics.

RUST NEVER SLEEPS & WELD are both excellent live albums featuring neil playing on electric guitar w/ a full band@@TeezMcGee

@@TeezMcGeeFreedom is similar to Rust Never Sleeps (from about 10 years prior) in that the primary theme is played acoustically to open and then electric to close the album. Also the album is approximately 50:50 between acoustic and electric songs. The electric ones are some of his absolute best...El Dorado, Don't Cry, No More...and there's a wild jazz tune called Crime in the City that will blow you away. One of his greatest songs and few know it.
