He has played this on several live shows and they all rock. He does this on a Saturday Night Live episode and I mean he really tears it up. Can’t go wrong with Neil.

“Kinder gentler” and “thousand points of light” are references to GW Bush. The man of the people” saying “Keep Hope Alive” is a reference to the Jesse Jackson presidential campaigns of 1988 and 1992

Saw him perform this song live when he was touring with Crosby, Stills and Nash around 2001. There were 12,000 people in the arena and every one of them was on their feet. That arena was ROCKIN'! It was the last song before the encore. He also sang Harvest Moon all by himself with an acoustic guitar in that show. Neil can do it all.

For some more great Neil Young Guitar Solos, listen to - 'On The Beach,' 'Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black),' 'Cortez The Killer,'
'Like A Hurricane'. 'Down By The River,' 'Cinnamon Girl, ' 'Cowgirl In The Sand.' My personal favorites are 'Cortez The Killer' and
'Like A Hurricane'. The Album version of 'Rockin' In The Free World' is a must to check out, too. Thanks for all you do to bring us
It has outstanding music and insightful commentary. Neil Young - The Godfather of Grunge.

Besides the music, the best thing about seeing Neil Young in concert is watching him stomp around the stage, especially on a heavy rocker like "Rockin' In The Free World", a Neil original of course. Neil doesn't perform too many cover songs, he has enough of his own. He is "The Godfather of Grunge". There is a version of this song from a concert in England, where he goes on for about 12-15 minutes, and he just won't stop, and the crowd won't let him stop, so he continues. Classic Neil.

I was at that Seattle show on February 21st of 1989 in the Paramount Theatre up in the balcony. Neil had the lyrics on a music stand so that he could read off of them. I also attended Neil's show in Portland, Oregon the previous day (2nd row of the orchestra pit!). Both concerts were AMAZING!!! 🎸

I literally saw Pearl Jam open for Neil 2 days after they played this at the MTV music awards. They played this song again on that night and I can't come close to telling you how great that was. For me this is the best thing I have ever seen (or heard,) on television.

Epic recording, and he was nearly 50 at the time! Fun reaction, too. The original studio recording is great, too, but you don't get to watch Neil be a monster on stage while listening. Someday, you'll want to check out Neil and the band Crazy Horse doing the song Cinnamon Girl from his first album after Buffalo Springfield broke up. It was grungy in 1969, decades before grunge was a thing.

Kinder gentler was a George Bush I line. Might mean a less harsh version of his boss Reagan. This song was the ignition point of Neil's amazing second half. I thought it was Godfather of grunge. One of his best rockers

Neil can do anything. He was once sued by his record label for failure to attempt to make commercial music. He did a hard rock album, followed by an electronic album, then a 50's style door wop album, then a hard core country album from 1981 to 85, soon did a blues album

I saw Neil Young around this time (mid-late 90s) and it was an over 3 hour show. He did about 12 songs. He had quite a few 10-15 minute improvised solos, where he just starts rockin back and forth and gets lost in the sauce.

Neil Young rocked out with several young musicians and artists that were coming into their own during this time period. He played alongside one of Willie Nelson's sons "Lukas Nelson" it's amazing how much Lukas sounds like his father singing (crazy) and Neil Young looks to be having the time of his life playing alongside these young artist's knowing half of them look up to him as their guitar hero, incredible. Anyway, here's another song from a live performance, if interested. "Neil Young - Promise of the Real - Powderfinger (Live at Farm Aid 2018)" (by the channel: Farm Aid) Lovely reaction I love to see your excitement as you discover these artists and their beautiful music. peace out

Yes, Neil went back to grunge on the freedom album, but he was grunge back in the '70s too. Check out live rust and rust never sleeps for examples of early grunge that earned him the nickname the Godfather of Grunge

I always get a kick out of younger people thinking someone in their 40's rockin' this way is special.Trust me, I'm pushing 70 and can still kick it..Neil's a pup here. He's a rocker, and I don't mean with a chair. No sweat, for him!..I saw McCartney about 2 years ago, and the guy lit the place up for about 3 hrs.! What is he 80/81?!..Look at the Stones!..Man, they counted these guys out so many times over the years it's become a joke!..These dudes were born during WWII!!
