Per Wikipedia Benie Taupin's lyric refers to a time in 1968, before John was popular as a musician, when John was engaged to be married to girlfriend Linda Woodrow. John and Woodrow were sharing a flat with Taupin in Furlong Road in Highbury, London, hence the opening line "When I think of those East End lights." John did not love his girlfriend, and felt trapped by the relationship. Feeling desperate, John contemplated suicide, and even made a half-hearted attempt at asphyxiating himself with a gas oven in his home.[5] He took refuge in his friends, especially Long John Baldry, who convinced John to abandon his plans to marry, in order to salvage and maintain his musical career. His parents arrived the next day, in a van, to take him home.[6] As a sign of respect and gratitude to Baldry, Taupin wrote him into the song as the "someone" in the title, and also as "Sugar Bear".[7][8][9] According to Taupin, John had turned on the gas oven, but left the windows open, rendering the attempt ineffective.[10] The lyric "And butterflies are free to fly" is a reference to a famous quote from Dickens' Bleak House: "I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies." A few years prior to the song's release, the same quotation had inspired the title of the 1972 American comedy-drama film Butterflies Are Free, an adaptation of the 1969 play of the same title.
Yes...plus the entire album this is from "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy', is autobiographical and the songs are in chronological order. He really gives it to the music industry too..the song 'Tower of Babel' and 'Bitter Fingers' are ruthlessly honest. It's party time for the guys in the tower of Babel Sodom meet Gomorrah, Cain meet Abel Have a ball y'all See the letches crawl With the call girls under the table Watch them dig their graves 'Cause Jesus don't save the guys In the tower of Babel
💖💖💖 I love "Levon", "Daniel", "The Bitch Is Back" and "Benny And The Jets". But these are great too, "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", "I'm Still Standing", "Sad Songs Say So Much", "Crocodile Rock", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" (with Kiki Dee) and "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word". Dang, the list is long and there are so many more, LOL.
When I was around 12-13 Elton was HUGE on the radio. I loved his songs. My favorite is I Guess That’s Why They Call it the Blues. Enjoyed the melody soooo much. 🎶Lyrics hits me right in the heart.
undoubtedly my favorite ELTON tune of all time. still have my original vinyl of captain fantastic from '75. in PERFECT condition. was 22 then - 71 now - damn where did the time go ?
This is one of my favorites!!! It's so beautiful ✌️🔥🎶 "It's four o'clock in the morning Damn it listen to me good I'm sleeping with myself tonight Saved in time Thank God my music's still alive." FIRE!
Although I'm a few years younger than him, I feel like I grew up with Elton John. I love so many of his songs and this an all time favorite. His voice is magical as are Bernie's lyrics. Love your reaction, Shawn. Blessings all. :hand-purple-blue-peace:
That’s a great observation and take on the ending of this song. Hope, soaring high and being lifted into the light. WOW, I’ve been an Elton John fan since the early 70’s and never thought of this ending the way you saw it and felt it.
Thank you. I'm almost 65 and this song came out around when I was 14. Fast forward to now. I have a close friend whose husband died. Shot himself in the head. No note. No indication prior. It's been 3 months. She's broken. They didn't have children (which is a blessing). But, I have spent countless hours on the phone with her trying to talk her out of killing herself. I've referred her to the national suicide hotline many times. The very first time I did she was hesitant. Didn't want to do it. But I kept insisting. I talk to her often (we work together). She has lost her health insurance because of her husband. She's suffering from severe CPTSD. And is experiencing severe depression which is getting worse every day. As far as her deceased husband, I don't think bad of him. At all. He had to have been in such pain, feeling such trauma that he actually went through it and took his life. Anyway, I'm doing the very best I can to help her. I can't imagine. But I am desperately trying to keep her alive.
Just note that the album cover we see here is just half of it...the back of it is also fully designed. The inside featured photos of Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin on one side, and Elton and the band on the other. Nigel Olsson drums/vocals Dee Murray bass/vocals Davey Johnstone guitars/vocals Ray Cooper percussion The album also came with a poster of the album cover, a fully-designed lyric book, and a scrap book with photos of Elton, Bernie, the band, and their families.
Elton’s got an endless list of hits. Empty Garden is touching. A song dedicated to John Lennon after his death. I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues is another great tune
This and "Don't let the sun go down on me" go together for me. If I have music on shuffle and one comes on, I'm liable to turn shuffle off and listen to both.
This is my favorite song, and my favorite EJ album. Brother, you nailed the reaction. This song is about escaping a toxic relationship, with the help of people who cared about him. The Album is an autobiographical account of Elton and Bernie struggling to make it in the music business.
This was Bernie's perspective (of course) he knows looking back, after they made it, that if Elton had gotten married to that girlfriend, and had a child or 2, he probably would have had to of gotten a job and the probably would still have been average poor joes. That's why in one place he writes "Thank God my music's still alive"
These videos that you recorded before your goodbye video are kind of upsetting, because I know you’re just going to disappear any minute! I really wanted you to do more Duran Duran. They’ve always meant a lot to me. And I love the face you make when you enjoy music. Dude you can’t stop.
Nice treat for this morning. One of his and Bernie's more powerful songs. Turning the volume up. My neighbors are gonna enjoy this one with me, whether they'd want to or not. ;-) The title track is just as sweet. someday...
LOVE that piano intro. I think this song has to do with his struggle with substances. Suggestions: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Daniel, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.
It’s about him almost getting married to his then girlfriend he didn’t love & feeling trapped. He attempted su*cide… Alter bound, hypnotized, sweet freedom whispered in my ear…
He wasn’t doing drugs at all in the time period that this song was referencing. Drugs didn’t even register in his life until late 1973. The song is purely about his relationship with a woman who he was to marry in 3 weeks, back in 1968, when Long John Baldry told him to call the wedding off. Sugar Bear was gay and everyone but Linda knew that Elton was gay. Linda was not supportive of the aspiring musician wanting to make a break into the music scene which was the most important thing in his life.
This was the album's cover. Funny enough, the ordinal album came with a comic that told the story of how Elton and Bernie met. The story used Elton' s real name of Reginald, but his into how they became Csptain Fantastic and the Dirty Brown Cowboy
Hey Shawn! You can't go wrong with Elton. Candle in the Wind is great that was written about Marilyn Monroe. And a great see live is when he changed the words some to the same song for Goodbye English Rose for Princess Diana's funeral. Thanks Shawn and hang in there with us here. We love you!
FOOTNOTE The "John" in Elton's name came as a tribute to John Baldry. (If you haven't heard him "Don't Lay No Boogie Woogie ( On The King of Rock N Roll)").
My favorite Elton John' tune by far (i even have the original 45). Thanks so much for reacting to this incredible song! )P..S. I'm also a longtime comic book geek, so I share your appreciation of comic-like artwork.)
Elton was obviously very conflicted about his sexual orientation in his early years, and even though I was just starting high school when his first hit "Your Song" came out I don't recall any publicity about his suicide attempt until years afterward. I recall he came out as bisexual sometime in the late '70s or early '80s before admitting he was gay a couple decades later. I think he was concerned about how the music industry would react, more than fan reaction. If Liberace's fans could support him in the '50s and '60s, why wouldn't Elton's fans support him? And for the most part they did.
I always want more Elton John reactions! I know you've done quite a few Elton John songs. There's one that gets overlooked a lot called "Harmony." Also, Shawn, watch the "Rocket Man" movie. It will explain so much about him. Elton approved the various scenes in the movie, particularly the way his parents are portrayed. It is a triumphant movie!
YES, MORE ELTON JOHN, ALL GREAT SONGS. BUT YLOVE "YELLOW BRICK ROAD", "DANIEL" AND "YOUR SONG". AND THERE'S AN EPIC DUET BETWEEN ELTON AND GEORGE MICHAEL, LIVE IN CHICAGO, WITH THE SONG FROM ELTON "DON'T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME".Big kiss from Portugal. Ana Ah, and please dive more into ABBA
CAN'T ever go wrong with an Elton and Bernie song! And just to give you a few suggestions to keep you going for a while with future EJ tunes for you to react to, you can start with the songs from his FIRST album, Empty Sky, from June 1969 and carry on through his decades of songs and music until you get to The Lockdown Sessions album, from October 2021! Enjoy your continuing Journey down their historic and Magical, Musical Rabbit Hole! Hope Shanna enjoys The Ride as well ! S.
I've always heard that this song is about Sir Elton was suppose to get married (to a woman) and the night before the wedding, a close friend talked Mr. John out of getting married because he hadn't come out as gay. Dunno if this was true or not, but that was the word back in the day! Personally, I don't know!
This is Eltons self-proclaimed favorite album about he and song writer Bernie Taupins music beginnings journey. Check out the track Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy about their beginnings
Human jukebox back with a list for you. Other Elton John songs about relationships "Your Song" "Tiny Dancer" "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" "Little Jeannie" "Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word" "Nikita" "Sacrifice" "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" "I Don't Wanna Go on with You Like That" "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" "I'm Still Standing" "The One"
The picture is the album cover for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy fromm 1975. I had the album, I'm pretty sure I had the cassette, and I have it now on my iTunes playlist. An eternal favorite. One of the songs on the album is Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
The backside of this cover had the band and producer cartooned in as well. FANTASTIC album, marking the end of the old Elton John band. The old band recorded this, but his new band played it live on tour.
David LaChapelle made a stunningly beautiful video for this song that was played along with this song at Elton's Las Vegas The Red Piano shows at Caesars Palace.
YEAH, BERNIE SAID ' THANK GODDDD MY MUSICS STILL ALIVE '😊YOU BET THANK GOD FOR THAT SHAWN! 💯 I'VE SAID IT BEFORE SHAWN, NOBODYYYY IN ROCK MUSIC DID IT LIKE BERNIE & ELTON, THEY WERE SO DAMNNNNN UNIQUE👍, BERNIE WROTE THE LYRICS AND ELTON WOULD WRITE THE MUSIC TO THOSE LYRICS, THAT'S HOW THEY DID IT FOR MORE THAN ( 50 ) YEARS!😮TAKE CARE THERE GUY!
Shawn, never knew the stuff you telling us after the song. Feeling sad for him.... Have a story lighten the mood, when in school (long ago) ( T-Rex was around) our music teacher taught us this song, when it came to the part 'damnit' we were surprised to have to say it( like i said the days when T Rex was around....the band) during rehearsals for a public performance at school, a lot of my classmates would yell various things instead of damnit. when we did the public performance no one said damnit( surprised us too) but said f bomb, very distinctly , crowd was silent for a moment then some laughter , lots of tension. music teacher furious. Suggestions: "Bang a gong" by T Rex....." More than i can say" by Leo Sayer......" Roxy roller" by Sweeney Todd" (Nick gilder)........"Hot child in the city" by Nick Gilder
Hi, new viewer, just dropped a comment on the Neil Sedaka video. Big long-time Elton fan here, have seen him in concert about 5 times. I see you've done a lot of the - um - 'usual' stuff, so I'll just throw in 5 of my favourites that are probably considered deep dives. 5. The One. An immense twinkly-piano ballad, 1992. 4. This Train Don't Stop There Anymore. From his 2001 album 'Songs From the West Coast'. 3. I've Seen That Movie Too. From 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', a forgotten masterpiece. 2. It Ain't Gonna Be Easy. A slow-burning song from his 'comeback' album, 'A Single Man'. 1. Friends Never Say Goodbye. From the soundtrack of 'The Road To El Dorado', Elton's version with backing vocals by the Backstreet Boys. And may I suggest a new artist? It's only my second favourite singer/songwriter. Chris Rea. I would suggest 'On The Beach' or 'Curse Of the Traveller' to kick off with. Very different songs but they give some idea of what he can do. Thanks. 😊
I think I was in 8th grade when this one came out. I remember writing a paper in English class about what I thought the meaning of the song was. Yes, I had a cool English teacher that let us select our song. This was mine. I remember thinking he was saved by a friend from a bad relationship and he was thankful to be free. Great reaction to this. Good to hear it again. Other good ones are “Your song” and “Bennie and the Jets”.
Nigel and Dee were Elton's original touring band (they were a trio). To hear what they sounded like pre-fame listen to the live album 11-17-70. Why were they fired? Elton's manager introduced him to cocaine in 1974, and between his spiraling addiction plus the exhaustion of two albums and three world tours a year took their toll. After firing them, he created his so called 'super band'. That band fell apart in 1976. Elton's career limped along afterwards, not recovering till the original band returned for 'Too Low for Zero' in 1983.
@@javlohudzlin4829 The new band? Honestly, I think that Pope and Passarelli were distinctly sub-par compared to Olsson and Murray. The original rhythm section was so...odd and interesting, where the new band's rhythm section was just dull. Of course it's all opinion, but you can compare the sounds pretty easily, because of the disastrous Wembley concert. Listen to their version of the entire Captain Fantastic album, or even of the fan favorites. It just sounds soulless to me. At the time the fans thought so too. The new band fell apart during the Blue Moves tour. On Caleb Quaye...he was amazing. If Elton just brought him into the band instead of gutting it's soul, they may have continued on top. Blue Moves (an album I like) bombed critically and with the fans...then Elton's slump began, which didn't stop till the original band returned in 1983.
@@Ocrilat Roger Pope was anything but dull and was there at the beginning... Also, "Rock of the Westies": tremendous album. Wembley's fine, I have no concern of the supposed people leaving who didn't want to hear the new music they were unfamiliar with. Their loss.
Nigel's drumming on this song is perfect.
This song only gets better the more times you hear it
This is what happens often when you have two genius’ collaborating…Elton and Bernie.
Elton John has a music catalog that is simply incredible, Brilliant!
You're too good at this Shawn. Please don't leave!

Coming in the morning with a truck to take me home
Someone saved my life tonight
So save your strength and run the field you play alone"
From 1970 to 1974 Elton John conquered the world!
Yes. The early days. Definitely.
His band then was so good too
It went past '74.

They actually put that in the film biography of Elton John which was fantastic btw.
It's party time for the guys in the tower of Babel
Sodom meet Gomorrah, Cain meet Abel
Have a ball y'all
See the letches crawl
With the call girls under the table
Watch them dig their graves
'Cause Jesus don't save the guys

Elton John/Bernie Taupin.... a songwriting duo right up there with Lennon/McCartney.
Another stellar reaction to an incredible song! 😀⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had this album when I was 12 yrs. old I'm 62 now. Just a fantastic album.
Which would have made me 15.
The drumming on this is majestic.
💖💖💖 I love "Levon", "Daniel", "The Bitch Is Back" and "Benny And The Jets". Please dont forget " Philadelphia Freedom" 😊❤
THIS is my favorite Elton John song. Love the lyrics and music. So heartfelt and emotional.

Of course we want more Elton John! 😂
You can choose any song, you can't do wrong. He's the best!
I can't suggest other Elton John songs. It's like asking to suggest a "Beatles" song. Take your pick!
undoubtedly my favorite ELTON tune of all time. still have my original vinyl of captain fantastic from '75. in PERFECT condition. was 22 then - 71 now - damn where did the time go ?
butterflies are free to fly....fly away....LEGEND!!!
We all have the potential to be that someone who saves a life, just by being there, just by patiently listening
I love how Elton amps up the piano flourishes toward the end of the song.....
This is one of my favorites!!! It's so beautiful ✌️🔥🎶
"It's four o'clock in the morning

I'm sleeping with myself tonight

That's my favorite verse, too. Brutally honest.

Elton's masterpiece. GREAT reaction!
Fantastic album, pun intended! Great from start to finish.
My favorite Elton tune!!! Thanks!
My favorite album cover art of all-time! Great album - Captn Fantastic is another super song!

The "someone" mentioned in this song is 60s singer "LONG JOHN BALDRY" He also mentions SUGAR BEAR who is The aforementioned 60s singer
I didn’t know that! Cool!
He convinced Elton not to get married, thus saving his life
🌸 love Elton
I rarely listen to this album anymore, but when I do, I listen to the whole thing! Every track is brilliant!

Thank you for understanding this song. Elton was everywhere on the radio in the early 70s. Thank you for your reaction.
One of his best! Gorgeous arrangement!
Nobody sounded even remotely like Elton John back then. I've been hearing this song since my older brother played his 45 of this!
"Philadelphia Freedom" is a banger, although all his music is bangers!!!!
You listen well.
You have give a listen to Levon. Still my favorite Elton John song.
Mine as well
I saw him in concert promoting this album. What a show
This entire album is an Elton and Bernie autobiography!
Elton’s got an endless list of hits. Empty Garden is touching. A song dedicated to John Lennon after his death. I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues is another great tune
The first album I ever bought with my own money. It was a huge hit. I love the title track and the rest of the album is great.

That is the album cover. I loaned my album to my friend’s brother and never got it back.
Elton n Bernie Are The Best Dou😊😊
David LaChapelle made a stunningly beautiful video for this song that was played along with this song at Elton's Las Vegas The Red Piano shows at Caesars Palace.
Daniel
You should watch the movie Rocket Man about Elton's life. It's really good.
It really is excellent
Shawn, never knew the stuff you telling us after the song. Feeling sad for him.... Have a story lighten the mood, when in school (long ago) ( T-Rex was around) our music teacher
taught us this song, when it came to the part 'damnit' we were surprised to have to say it( like i said the days when T Rex was around....the band) during rehearsals for a public
performance at school, a lot of my classmates would yell various things instead of damnit. when we did the public performance no one said damnit( surprised us too) but said
f bomb, very distinctly , crowd was silent for a moment then some laughter , lots of tension. music teacher furious.
Suggestions: "Bang a gong" by T Rex....." More than i can say" by Leo Sayer......" Roxy roller" by Sweeney Todd" (Nick gilder)........"Hot child in the city" by Nick Gilder
BTW...another unreal tidbit. On the day of it's release... this album entered the charts at #1!
Thanks. 😊
Brilliant album, featuring sledge hammer drums from Nigel Olsen, you need to hear the whole album!😎
Played this over and over as a young teen...lamenting over possible romance
FABULOUS SONG HUH? HEHE I LOVE ELTON YOU SHOULD DO CAPT FANTASTIC & THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY I LOVE THIS WHOLE ALBUM
❤❤😊😊❤❤
Nigel and Dee were Elton's original touring band (they were a trio). To hear what they sounded like pre-fame listen to the live album 11-17-70. Why were they fired? Elton's manager introduced him to cocaine in 1974, and between his spiraling addiction plus the exhaustion of two albums and three world tours a year took their toll. After firing them, he created his so called 'super band'. That band fell apart in 1976. Elton's career limped along afterwards, not recovering till the original band returned for 'Too Low for Zero' in 1983.
That band was great with Roger Pope and Caleb Quaye returning!
Their loss.
Good song
I always thought this song was about someone breaking away from the drug scene before addiction set in?or before they got started.
Man that library goes,1974
