From the early 70s. The early Elton John is his best music by far. The Album "Honkey Chateau" is an absolute masterpiece. The other album "Madman Across the Water" is great as well.
Always love Elton John's performances. Fantastic at his career. Shout out, obviously, to Bernie Taupin himself...fabulous duo. Great reaction Shawn...🎤🎶🎹🇬🇧
I saw Elton live in Honolulu back in 2000. It was just him and a piano on stage... no backing musicians. He played for two hours, running through a bunch of his his songs, except that he stretched each one by adding a long improvisational section in the middle. Absolute genius.
@@MongooseTales Thats Elton ...good to hear you enjoyed. Here in Vancouver it was just Elton and his band but no guest band/soloist. Of course being his final tour he just kept up for approximately 3 hrs. Very much worth it...👍🇨🇦🎤
One of those early years and albums when Elton and Bernie had the Midas touch! Here are some other early great Elton songs; Madman Across The Water,Where To Now St. Peter, Burn Down The Mission, Your Song, Take Me To The Pilot, and Indian Sunset , are just a few more truly great songs by Elton!
If you want a truly great Elton John story-song, check out Ticking. Some words used in the lyrics will nowadays be considered offensive, but the story still holds up even 50 years after it was written (it might even be more relevent now, then it was then...)
We're so jealous that you get to experience this for the first time. We really love Elton's hits, and we've been checking out the deeper album cuts. We just went through the 'Madman Across The Water' album. Fantastic! We're sure we'll be checking out this album soon too. Great stuff. Thanks for doing this.
Hey man! Elton was the hottest thing on the planet during this period. Does he have better songs? Well, many just as good and many even better. So keep rolling with early Elton.
I find that young people are interested in lyrics first, music second. I think that's because Rap music is that way. The lyrics ARE the music, the instruments are basic just to set the rhythm. For us from the 70s and 80s, it's the other way around. Both lyrics and music were important bit I think for most of us, the music was first. Before the Internet, it was hard work back then to find out the lyrics if they weren't printed on the album sleeve. If we understood the lyrics then great, but most of us were lucky to know the chorus and some of the lyrics to know what the song was about. I'm still finding out the lyrics to some of the songs from my youth.
Very well said. I have no idea what the lyrics are in about 70% of the music I have heard and loved throughout my life - like this song - no idea, but it's a great song. I'm also like you learning almost every day the lyrics of old songs. Some times it's a good thing, some times it's not! Haha
@@snakeinthegrass7443 Exactly! That's why I really like this guy's reactions. He digs into what the song really means and what it's saying. I often end up learning about the songs I grew up with from him.
I fully agree with others who say that Elton's early work was his best and is most worthy of Shawn's further exploration. He continued on as a great musician and showman for decades after, but was at the height of his prowess as a composer in the 1970s.
It's okay to just call him Elton, LOL. That was the norm back in the day when nearly everyone in the world knew who he was. We also used to call him EJ.
Recorded in France at Château d'Hérouville - where Chopin lived for a time -recording studio established for The Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull, Elton John, David Bowie, and the Bee Gee's all recorded, mostly during the 1970's.
The most highly syncopated song I have EVER heard. Love it. As someone else commented, only the bassist knew where the 1st beat was, everyone else making with sycopated madness. Who even cares about the lyrics on this one - check out those horn charts!
Had this album at the time, age 17, fun to hear this great track again after so long😏 One of his best. Like you I love hearing a ton of things happening at the same time. It would be fun to know how many different piano tracks are overlaid here … 4? -> There’s a well known Bach piece that uses I’m pretty sure it’s 3 pianos (Elton trained classically so he probably knows it) and a great Steve Reich piece titled “6 Pianos” -with headphones? you’ll love it ✊🏽 1972 is the same year Stevie’s Superstition exploded planet earth 😄 I’ve always wanted to hear another band make a Honky Cat cover and hit it harder, make it even funkier - pump up the bass, more horns like Stevie, add a tabla 😁 Rocket Man of course thrust EJ into superstardom, and many of his early fans (like me) dropped out when he went glitter-bubblegum from Yellow Brick Road on. I’ve always liked and respected HIM, but I never bought another one of his albums. -> I was surprised how much I liked the recent bio-pic Rocketman (except the disastrous last song should be deleted)😆 much better than bohemian rhapsody (tho I really like Malek)
Shawn, please don't feel that you have to "get" a song on your first listen. I like that you typically do some research afterwards - but keep in mind, when these songs were new, we didn't have the Internet to investigate them. Sometimes it was years until I understood what a song was really about. The most important thing on a first listen is how much a song moves YOU. At your request, here's some of Elton John's best songs for you to consider. I'm including some deeper tracks that you might easily overlook. 🎹 HERCULES This wasn't a single, but it's an infectious little rock and roller about a guy wanting a girl who has a muscleman for a boyfriend. Elton's piano is powerful. 🎹 SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING This was a big hit, with Elton rocking his hardest. This song was blasted in bars across the country. 🎹 ALL THE GIRLS LOVE ALICE What a guitar riff, and man, does Elton pound that piano! Just try to sit still during this deep track! 🎹 SOMEONE SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT This beautiful ballad was a big hit and it really draws you in. The drum entrance is fantastic. 🎹 TICKING This little known track was way ahead of its time in the mid seventies. Sadly, it's so relevant today. It's about a guy who's lost his sanity. Elton does this one alone, playing the piano, synthesizer and all the vocals. Stunning.
Great album, but his next one - Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player - is my favorite by Elton John. Every song is good but man, Blues for Baby and Me and High Flying Bird are so great, and completely overlooked, sadly.
From the early 70s. The early Elton John is his best music by far. The Album "Honkey Chateau" is an absolute masterpiece. The other album "Madman Across the Water" is great as well.
Now add Tumbleweed Connection, The self titled Elton John album, and the Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano player album to great albums!
@@joelliebler5690 Captain Fantastic, Yellow Brick Road, Caribou, and even Empty Sky.
Elton John jumpin'!!! Nice to see how much you appreciate the best, best Elton like all of us older cats.
Sir Elton is having some fun with this song. Nothing but smiles all around.
Wow. What a gift....Bernie's words and Elton's voice and music. Lucky us. Blessings!
The entire album is excellent! "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself", "Mellow", "Susie", "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters", "Rocket Man"...
Crocodile Rock!
Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters is a beautiful song❤

Early Elton John is the best . If I had to pick one, Tumbleweed Connection is my favorite album.
I haven't listened to this in a long time. Forgotten how great a record it is.
"Talking Old Soldiers" on Elton's Tumbleweed Connection album is a really deep and powerful song with great lyrics.
I LOVE this whole album!!

Elton. Like Elvis, it’s just Elton.
Early Elton was great, Take Me to the Pilot, Burn Down the Mission ( especially live)

I just adore Elton
The level of syncopation between the piano and the drums is amazing in this song. Such a wild rhythm.
I fully agree with others who say that Elton's early work was his best and is most worthy of Shawn's further exploration. He continued on as a great musician and showman for decades after, but was at the height of his prowess as a composer in the 1970s.
Just keep going down the Elton John rabbit hole so many great great songs; Elton has a great band and he can bang the Hell out of the piano keys
If you haven't already, try "Madman Across the Water," from the album by the same name, circa 1971-72.

Elton's (and Bernie's) masterpiece album.
That whole LP is crazy good. Thanks for sharing this one!
Pronounced "Honky SHA-TOE". Wonderful album. The style is called "Honky Tonk".
Masterpiece. Love it. Even if the bassist is the only one who remembers where the original beat is, and every other instrument is dancing around it. 🙂
Elton John’s songs, music, lyrics, just fantastic!!! 🔥👏🏻he’s got it all!! Love him♥️♥️♥️
He wrote a song called: Blue Eyes! “ This song made us think of our very blue eyed son.👍💙💙💙

I love this song. Elton John is my favorite artist. My favorite is "Philadelphia Freedom".
Oh, you should indeed listen to the other 47 songs!😄
Look up some of Eltons performances on The Muppet Show.
Shows his lighter/funny side.
It was a great show when he was on.😊

AND THAT'S THE OPENINGGGG TRACK FOR ( HONKY CHATEAU ) 😊AND THEN IT GOES INTO THE 2ND TRACK WHICH IS : MELLOW 👍
