  • I have been painting in my sketchbook since May 2023 and I notice a build up of feelings of perfectionism creeping in... and I don't love all my paintings.
    In this episode - I chat about the productivity trap, finding lessons in every type of art I make. I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did.

    Just what I needed to hear today as I feel that all my art is "ugly" and I am on the verge of quitting! Thank you for the encouragement and today I will paint even if it's ugly.

    I'm a beginning watercolor painter. When I share my sketchbooks with someone, they oh and ah over my good paintings then look at my quizically when they turn the page and see my ugly art or scattered practice. I feel all attempts (good, bad, & ugly) are learning experiences. Your kind words and philosophy behind what you expressed here is very encouraging. Thank you for sharing. I learned so much from this video!

    I’m new to your channel and watercolor in general. I’ve been avoiding painting in a sketchbook because I didn’t want to keep any of my ugly paintings. I thought I needed to get better before attempting keeping a sketchbook but I think now I will just start using one.

    Thank you for this very real video! As an artist, we all have beautiful and not so beautiful art. What matters most, is that we tried.

    Excellent advice. I will try to put your wise observations into practice. I love the idea of using ugly art as a form of freedom instead of being consumed by frustration and "failure." Very liberating and encouraging. Thank you for sharing your experience!😊

    Everything you said today really resonated with me. As I was painting in my sketchbook today I was thinking to myself “I really don’t like this.” Like you said, that is when you just relax and lean into the fact this is not going to be a great painting and that is when I discover something new or have “happy accidents.” I always learn something from my bad paintings!

      So glad to hear how you feel and also you painting in your own sketchbook today! First off you need a pat on your back for showing up. That counts! Here's to learning more everyday from the good, bad and ugly....

    Thank you Jillian…I’m glad to know that artists such as yourself also struggle. I had assumed once you reached a certain point you always were able to get it right. This is freeing. **I still think it’s beautiful!**

    I watched an interview of Sandi Hester (Bits of an artist’s life YT channel), and she said “All the bad goes into the good.” I try to remember that when I make ugly art. In each piece of ugly art I also try to learn something from it.

    I can't count how many times I have wanted to throw out something I am working on because it looks "ugly" to me- but I found if I press through it, it ends up turning out well...if it doesn't I don't call it a fail, I look at it as learning and getting better the next time :)

      You couldn't have said it better!! :) just this week we had an art social session with my paint community and I dropped a my brusho pigments over my flower. Disaster! Almost gave up on it during the live session but pushed on. I posted the finished painting here in the community. Loved it anyway! Happy accident!

    We should strive to paint every day, even if its just a few minutes. And dont expect a masterpiece every time we paint......just enjoy those moments of getting to paint.

    I cant give up there is nothing ugly about your painting today, so encouraging thank you so much you told us not to buy too many materials, however is Gouache a little easier to deal with than watercolours for a complete beginner? fingers still a bit frozen to start on beautiful new sketchbook same as yours! thank you so much Margaret❤

    • @brushmovement
      @brushmovement  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Margaret!! I find that gouache is different from watercolor even though they are both water mediums. But maybe it moves less with water as compared to watercolor so you get a bit more control. I do find layering with gouache to be quite different because the underneath layers get reactivated😅
