- Mario was just 15 years old at the time he burst on the scene, blowing up into one of the hottest new artist, with one of the hottest videos on the charts. His cover of Just a friend stormed up the charts, peaking as the 4th most popular song of the year in the U.S. Funny the song was actually given to Mario after Usher let the hit slip through his fingers because of a shelved album he never released. The song turned Mario into a household name, and honestly, was perfect and better suited for the teen star. His debut album would go gold behind that song and a few other singles, leading to his sophomore album 2 years later, that did even better. Album 2 had his biggest single to date leading it, a song called “Let me love you”. The song was an absolute hit, that became #1 across the charts in the U.S, going platinum and earned Mario a grammy nomination for best male vocal performance. That album remains Mario’s staple album and peak of his career. He’s released 3 more albums following over the years, but that was the final time he went gold or platinum, and hasn’t seen that level success or some would say anywhere close ever since. Mario is still extremely talented and has had a great career, especially with all the adversity he's had to overcome. His album "Closer to Mars" is really good and has that classic R&B sound.

I was a Sophomore going onto my Junior year of High School in that Summer of 2002. Hearing that single of his for the first time, I thought he was destined to last in the R&B scene for some time. Even though the 90's was over, Early to Mid 2000's R&B was still great and still had soul to it. It's a shame he never gained full momentum in the years going forward. He had a couple of other good hits too long after his debut.
We the same age I really miss those time especially 50¢ & ja rule era those days are like a fantasy compared to now
His issue with his mother. They got physical and that was a wrap. He can really sing
Mario was stunted by digital media prominence. He was one of the last teen artists that came out during a time of pure radio and television promotions and being more of the touring artist. Him, Bow Wow, and Romeo to be specific. Those around Bow Wow took advantage of new technologies and embraced the social media influences and Romeo was a brand all his own, even with Bow Wow adding MySpace and new cellphones to his videos at the time. Secondly, it was the fact that his songs stayed relatively mature when in comparison to his contemporaries Chris and Trey, he didn't pull party or fun in a young way. Which is a good thing now but in your early 20s as an artist is completely different. "Break Up" was a perfect example of the issue that I think he had in the late 2000s. Chris and Trey found that and "How Do I Breathe" was a Pop song on an R&B album and the DNA album really didn't have a direction that could have made him solidly in the R&B or Pop space. While this lane works for CB, it is hard for an artist like Mario to navigate.
Having three years between projects also didn't help him between 2004 and 2007. Because the 2007 sound was different and the singles released from "Go" just weren't what could have propelled him into the realm of popularity that was comparable to Chris or Trey at that time. Trey even didn't really blow until "Ready" and that was because of the rebrand that took three albums to get right.
I always felt as if "Kryptonite" should have been a single from the "Go" album and along with "Music For Love" and "Crying Out For Me". And that "Do Right" was a great song but out of place on the project. I think it would have been a dope move and another way to keep him feeling current. Because those singles did EXCITE us but I think there is still something left to be desired and I have been a fan since 2002.

Super underrated singer. I really wish they’d get him on tiny desk. Dude can still have a career. He could of take Chris brown lane after his incident or at least had a run during that time. He still makes music and I think had an album coming soon.

Marios debut single was NOT a cover. It uses elements of the original- which means it’s a sample. These days people like to say “interpolation”. But it’s is absolutely not a cover. Just wanted to put that out there.

I don’t think the labels shelved him. I think the traditional r&b sound died out when autotune started poppin, neyo Chris & the dream were writing more pop songs (irreplaceable, umbrella, disturbia)

Mario is still extremely talented and he really had a great career as a R&B singer. He’s better than Omarion as far as an entertainer. I remember they did a remix version of Just A Friend with the late rapper Biz Markie. He’s from Baltimore, too. Back then, when he was a teenager. Boom is still one of my favorite Mario song today as he worked with Lil’ Jon and Juvenile. Mario is more realer than Omarion will ever be. I get a gut feeling that Omarion is phony mane. Mario killed him in Verzuz as Omarion performed with the fake version of B2K. That’s messed up. He is very underrated as well as an actor when he appeared on a few movies and TV shows.

Mario & his music is legendary. One song that i found on RUclips called " This is How Love Feels" was THE soundtrack for a trip i took to Dubai to party in 2011. All his albums were great albums. Salute to Mario. A Great Talent.

Mario career is being revived now after that Monster Vocal Display in the 🆚 against Omarion (basically Mario in a group when you think about it) He just put out a song and video with Wayne and Tyga. He also did an acappella version of let me love you on a freestyle series at a radio station earlier this month. He just need that one hit record. Just collab with Chris or HER and he’ll be back
He already had his single with Chris a couple years back. "Get Back" was slept on and deserved more. Another collab would be great but being indie makes things take more time. He may be taking the time to be more creative on his endeavors and wanting to craft a sound that is his distinctly

"Mario" had some real heavy competition while he was out such as "Chris Brown" , "Trey Songz", "Lloyd", & "Marquis Houston". However, he had some hits under his belt to be able to stand with the big names I mentioned.....I don't think he "Growth Stunned" I do think his team should of do more to push his career harder....can you image how large he would of been today ?

I remember when I was a teen and Mario did a walkthrough at the teen club were at. He was like 16 at the time so he was out on the floor dancing with the girls. It humanized someone that we all thought was huge at the time.
