What Happened To The Omarion Era In RNB? Stunted Growth Music

  • Today’s feature is a guy that was on fire in the early 2000s and showed the potential to be the next it male act in rnb. It began with his participation in the group B2K as their lead singer and face. He could sing, dance, write and act as well, and at the time, all roads seemed to point to him being the 2000s version of and rnb superstar. Looking back did he fall below those expectations? There’s an argument to justify saying that he did, as he never went platinum as a solo artist, even though understanding not every artist goes platinum, but as far as potential, many saw him being an artist that could sell to the masses. He was also set to own or at least have his time where he was the it guy in rnb, having his very own era he can lean on and say I was the #1 guy and that didn’t happen. It didn’t last, but for a short time B2K were the it group and Omarion was expected whenever he went solo, to be even bigger than that. He has 7 solo albums, 2 of which went gold, his first 2 albums were #1 in the country, and he has an extensive film and television catalogue. But you can not be disappointing and still not have grown into your potential. For these reasons, Omarion’s growth was stunted, and he didn’t have the career expected. You hit it right in the head, once Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz Came On The Scene, Omarion kinda shifted to the background, a b2k reunion back in 07 might have helped him as far as staying relevant

He was in a STACKED era. It's well-known that he and his B2K counterparts were "visual" artists. Meaning that they were known more for the aesthetics of their videos and their dance moves than pure vocals.
IMO, "Touch" and Ice Box were defining moments in his solo career. He's at his best when he's doing music that brings his choreography to life. Those are songs where the choreographies are married to the vocals. They're visceral.
BUT let's not forget that Post ta Be was one of the biggest song's of the 2010's. It just went 6x Platinum and will soon be at a billion views.

The boy band phase died out when their fans aged with them. It’s many answers to this and they all will be right but in my opinion R&B died when they kept featuring rappers on their songs and then R&B singers tried to be rappers and then the sound just became vulgar. Almost none of them can actually sing including Omarion. His good dancing kinda hid those deficiencies.

When De La Soul was asked by fans in a podcast radio interview about why spiritually culturally conscious Hip Hop died, they responded "Look.....ya'll (Gen X) grew up, finished college, started families and working two jobs, buying homes, and had less time and money for music. You left and moved on!! And Gen Y2k took over." Damn. That was a punch in the gut for me, cuz it was no lies. So I don't complain loudly about current music anymore.

Bro, O came out in 2005, and Ollusion came out in 2010, So you throw in 21 and Face Off and that's four Studio albums in 5 years. Plus, he did numerous film and TV roles in that same time frame. He also changed record labels 3 times including trying to launch his own label all while holding the tour and appearance schedule of a top Pop/ R&B star at the time. Jay-Z was the only modern artist at the time dropping a new album every year. Omarion was putting in major work and taking full advantage of his star power at the time. His growth was by no means stunted.
Omarion was never going to be a classic R&B star the likes of the 80s and 90s stars we knew before him. Usher was still too young at the time and had a stronger vocal and music library, and Chris Brown had stepped into the Pop Star role that was typically filled by the white boy bands at the time. Omarion was something in between Usher and Chris and was always going to have to share his fan base with those guys.
It's never fair to try to compare artists to Michael Jackson or Prince, those are once-in-a-lifetime talents. Omarion has been in the game for over 20 years now and has never gone more than a couple of years without releasing some kind of content. Plus, he already has enough material to tour for the rest of his life. There are groups out there that have only released 2 or 3 studio albums that they have been touring on since the 80s or 90s.

Then he was supposed to sign to young money and the deal never went through and then he signed to maybach music for one album and now he’s independent.

Omarion shines! He should have went pop like Usher instead of doing R & B. Should have dissociated from Stokes and Houston earlier also. He wasn't outshined. He just didn't have a good label and music that carries.

  • @blakebrown84

Omarion was more of an entertainer as a singer and dancer after he left B2K. The girls really loved the heck outta him. He has released 7 solo albums and have some film credits to his resume. He doesn’t deal with his bandmates anymore because they were too toxic for him. B2K also didn’t last because of external issues and personal problems. The group disbanded because of Chris Stokes. They hated him. Doing an album with Bow Wow had him lose some credibility. He was a child star like Bow Wow. Also, he was signed to Timbaland’s label Mosley Music Group and Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group. He also appeared in Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood for one season before he decided to leave. He did that to get B2K back together and he dated Apryl Jones at the time. As far as his era, I just think Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Ne-Yo have dominated the R&B charts as one of the biggest superstars.

From Usher to Chris Brown, let’s take a closer look at some of the most iconic male R&B singers of the 2000s. There were a lot of R&B acts during that era and they were Lloyd, Jaheim, Tank, Bobby V, Lyfe Jennings, Anthony Hamilton, Avant, Pretty Ricky, Donell Jones, Carl Thomas, 112, Dave Hollister, Day26, Tyrese, John Legend, Maxwell, Next, D’Angelo, Seal, Justin Timberlake, Charlie Wilson, Pharrell, Ginuwine, Mario, Akon, Kem, Bruno Mars, Miguel, The-Dream, Ray J, Musiq Soulchild, Eric Benet, and Mario Winans

@@DontressSmith Usher was the most popular R&B acts during that era because he had a great run of hits. He has worked with Lil’ Jon and Ludacris for Yeah, Red Light and Lovers & Friends. Usher changed the game and made the genre for what it is today.

@@blakebrown84 I agree with you I'm not saying that he definitely was I'm just saying Omarion was Poppin around that time also I'm not saying he was bigger than usher at the time absolutely not but what im saying he was definitely doing his thang than what 2 years later CB comes along and takes over I gotta give him credit for what Omarion done around that time after B2k

    • @blakebrown84
      @blakebrown84 10 месяцев назад +1

@@DontressSmith yeah I do, Omarion is more of an entertainer than he is a singer. He has practiced his dance moves a lot. Chris Brown try to be a Michael Jackson, but he can’t never ever outperform him because Michael has put in too much work effort for someone like Chris to outdo him. Michael Jackson was the smartest musician to ever outthink the music industry when he was alive. It was those money-hungry monsters who were jealous of Michael’s success. Omarion wasn’t a perfect person at all. He did lose to Mario in Verzuz and it shows that he’s not great of an entertainer. I don’t think Omarion was ready when his bandmates refused to deal with him. B2K as a group never really got along with each other because they lasted from 1998-2004, then 2018-2019. They have disbanded twice. Omarion hasn’t succeed in building relationships with other musicians.

I was a huge B2K fan and loved Omarion’s first album. I wouldn’t blame Bow Wow for Omarion’s popularity declining. I blame it more on the fact that his music stopped being good and as I got older, I realized he really cant sing. Like, yea he looks good, can dance, but his vocals are not good.
