- I was at least 14 ft away quietly observing this alligator resting in the marshland and was just about to get up and leave. I guess he feels threatened when I was about to stand up and hissed at me.

They’re a lifeform that prefers isolation. Even from their own kind. That’s why when they’re in groups you tend to see a lot of videos of them attacking eachother. Basically, they’ll stare at you if you’re far away but if you get closer they’ll hiss.

Translation: F**k off, it's Sunday and I'm trying to sleep.
I'm here because I was just sitting on the pier on a canal in cape coral fishing when all of the sudden I heard this sound at what seemed like about 6, maybe 8 feet behind me in the water. It was nuts, I was like what the f@$% was that. About 30 seconds after I hooked a catfish and started to bring it in when at the end of the pier I hear this huge thrash in the water! I never seen what did it as it was kind of dark and I couldn't see under the pier. So I came looking for sounds, I did assume it was a gator, but couldn't be sure as this is a pretty salty canal. Anyway, that thing was pissed at me for fishing I guess and was definitely either coming after me or warning me not to get in the water...lol! Can they get up on a pier from the water? I'd assume not right?
Whew, they can do a short charge but if pier is too high then probably not!
