When our son first moved out he loved to tailgate, made him feel macho or something. After his 4th rear-ender in 2 months, his insurance company dropped him like a hot potato. When he went hunting for another company they wanted $900.00 bucks a month! He finally returned his plates to DMV, kept the car as a fancy driveway decoration, and pedaled his happy backside all over town (begging rides when it snowed) for 3 years. Not to mention the difficulty he had getting his dates to pick him up during that time...
Yeah, he doesn't tailgate anymore. People can be taught.

Set that bad boy in the back of my truck pointed out the tailgate and when Tommy Tailgater decides to get too close, just hit the auto drop on the tailgate and watch him slam on his brakes. I have had the police called on me several times for this tho, but once they see it's just pipe and the reason it's there, they laugh too.

Back when I was 19 and stupid, I got rid of a tailgater on my Ford Fairmont real quick. I applied my brakes and I heard his tires squeal as he quickly moved to the other lane. I laughed my ass off. I don't suggest anyone do that. There could have been serious consequences. Another story. My dad once backed into a parking spot with our 77 Ford Supercab at the time. When he put it in park, he forgot to set the brake, and there was enough play that the truck rolled back and tapped the Corvette behind it. There was a bit of damage. He found the owner, and I guess Dad left the updated policy at home. So he had the owner follow. Dad said the Vette owner tailgated him all the way. When Dad came upon a quick stop sign on his route home, he said he came very close to slamming on his brakes, and then after the collision saying "OK, asshole! Now you owe me!" But Dad was not that kind of person. He let it go, and handled his responsibility.

Unless you are going slow in a fast lane. I agree about tailgaters, I'm a driver and see people tailgate all the time for no reason. Many times when I drive in a left lane and someone is closing in, I would move to the right lane if its safe to do so, but often they don't pass, just get stuck next to me, drives me crazy. I really wish we could think of our roads as PUBLIC, meaning it's not my lane and I do whatever the heck I want, but think about traffic flow, not make other drivers route harder to accomplish, it's frustrating as it is.
It would be good for everybody if we would have more respect for the rule of law, not how I personally feel about it. Roads are public, my home is a private place and treat it as such.

Even going slowly in the fast lane doesn’t justify tailgating. At a push, it’ll justify flashing your lights or beeping your horn, but there’s really no excuse for tailgating. The distance between your car and the car in front of you is the your stopping distance. Leave an adequate gap and you’re more likely to stop using nothing more than the brakes on your car. It’ll be safe and incident free. Happy days. However, if you get too close to the car in front, you’re more likely to crash into it when it stops. Trust me, I’m a Miata owner. I get tailgated on the regular.

    • @flashgordon6238

I'll let the car drift into the right side as well, then jerk the wheel and purposely over correct, then back to the right edge. The back of the car swings pretty good and it looks like loss of control. The tailgater backs way off.

I'll choose a safe straight part of the road, speed up to get away from him, then suddenly brake and reduce my speed. They know I'm a bit nuts, then, and usually back off. NEVER do this on a curve, as they won't know you've slowed down so much when you're out of sight. It's the visual aspect of slowing down quickly that gets their attention.

I’m seeing SO MANY comments basically saying: If you get tailgated, it’s YOUR fault hur dur dur. You should move to the slow lane doi. If I hit you it’s because you aren’t going fast enough, doh! When I travel on a multiple-lane highway, I typically travel in the far right lane at about 5 over. There are still people who tailgate me. Sometimes to the point that I can no longer even see their lights in my mirrors. On other roads, there is just one lane and I typically travel 10 over and people STILL TAILGATE! I won’t go faster because I’m already pushing it and I don’t feel like getting a speeding ticket because YOU are an asshole.

A buddy calls it the barrel game. Those orange road barrels sometimes tip into the traffic lane. Full tread peels from 18 wheelers are another damaging gift for that small car that's drafting my 3/4ton pickup truck.
Tailgaters don't have a view of the road ahead because it takes all their concentration to avoid kissing my trailer ball as my speed varies. I move over at the last minute and watch the carnage in my side mirror.
Usually there's sand on the edges of the highway on dry winter days. Edging over slightly will kick up a cloud of it to sandblast the windshield of a vehicle that's too close. They usually get the idea and pass me or back off.

  • @howardkerr8174
    @howardkerr8174 5 лет назад +19

I have had people riding my bumper so closely that all I see in my rear view mirror is their windshield. No hood, no grille, no fenders, just the windshield and after slowing to a crawl....they still won't pass.
I haven't owned a car with a manual transmission in a few years, but I used to try letting off the gas and then dropping a gear but people are so stupid that they will hit you before it registers that you have lowered your speed without hitting the brakes.
As bad as tailgaters are, I agree with another commentor here that it is very annoying when a car rolls up next to you on a multi lane road...And then doesn't pass you. It's like they are side-gating(?) your car.

I rigged a spray system under my rear bumper using vegetable oil. When someone is behind me, I flip a switch and a spray of oil hits them and they try their windshield wipers and it makes it worse. They have to pull over and you can see they are pretty mad......but they think it was something on the road and not me. Works every time.

A folding tailgate on my trailer helps tons, I usually fold it up inside the trailer... Most people don't realize that things inside my trailer aren't just going to roll off but the fact they see equipment sitting there and the gate laying flat on the boards usually (most often) makes them keep a reasonable distance.

They hit me they're totally fucked. I had a lady hit me at 15mph i got out looked at truck and no damage, her car fucked my hitch went into her radiator. I asked her if she wanted to wait for cops which i told her she would get ticket or just leave that she can figure out later my truck is fine and dont have time to wait for cops. So she wanted cops which gave her ticket and i went on my way while she waited for tow truck. Dumb bitch what she gets.

You would be surprised what leaving a trailer hitch in your receiver hitch will do if a car runs into the back of you. If you can moderate it a bit by letting off on the brake before they hit you, it will just go through their front bumper and radiator, slice sideways as they attempt to steer to the side, and then come back out a new hole. Basically two keyholes and a slot cut between them. Had that happen once and all it did to my pickup was knock a bit of dirt off my trailer hitch. Kind of felt sorry for the woman though, so I spoke with her husband on the phone and told him that everything was alright and no one was hurt, but the car probably should not be driven due to all the coolant rapidly exiting the radiator. I told him that I would stay there with her until the tow truck arrived to get her off the freeway. Just a normal day during Houston rush hour...

It gets worse every year. Use to be any model of Jeep were the worst tailgaters and drivers. Now BMW's are the all time worse tailgaters and traffic violators. And I mean aggressive reckless driving. Get yourself a front and rear dash cam ASAP. Saved me from a wealthy BMW driver who side swiped my 2000 F150. Kept my dash cams a secret from the two cops. Got a sworn statement from other driver who lied lied lied and was faking outrage. A week later I handed my video to cops. Get call from an officer telling me the county prosecutor may prosecute the liar. Haven't heard back since. I have been driving for 30+ years without a single traffic ticket.

I'm a retired trucker and when ever I got a tailgater,
and if I was on an Interstate highway after snow storm
and the highway was dry again, I would drift over and
run down the emergency rumble strips for a few hundred
feet and let the big tires of the rig kick up all the sand,
dust, road salt, small gravel that is down in the louvers
    of the strip..
That would create a cloud of dust, small rocks, salt
and sand into the air and back at the tailgater.. They
would back off real quick and if they approached again
without dimming their lights I'd do it again and repeated
this until they got a fucking clue..
Dropping small marbles out of the vent window of the
cab works too.. But it's better done at night when they
    can't see it coming..
Just a couple of tricks I learned during 30 years of driving..

Your vehicle would be fucked up, and I would probably not even feel you hit my truck (unless you drive a semi also, which I highly doubt). It's also used as my personal truck, and I drive it everywhere, even to get groceries at the supermarket. It's old, but it's mine, and it's heavy. I don't drive slow and I leave for work at 3:15 a.m. I drive an '04 GMC 2500. Those that tailgate me always have their high beams on. I turn my mirrors out and down and shine their lights back at them. They usually move right and try to hide but I move over also. And if I come upon a "drunk" driving too slow (45-50 or less), and I often do at this time, I politely shine my high beams to help them see. But I don't tailgate.

having electric remote mirrors, you wouldn't really need to 'move over also'; simply keep playing the remote mirror knob to keep tracking their eyes...
Myself, well what I also did is to buy a coupla 13 yard rolls of 2 inch retro-reflective fabric tape.
Set up a small cargo rack in the back window.
Rollout the tape and wrap a lattice of it around the rack.
Tailgater at night will get all his overbright lights, back into his own eyes.
Fringe benefit is that the tape will also reflect light forward, to also passively punish oncoming traffic that hasn't dimmed their lights too!

Fill your windshield washer fluid reservoir with diesel and stick the hose in the air intake. Push the wiper button and belch smoke at people behind.

Jackson Steiger Automatic transmission fluid will make a beautiful white smoke cloud when injected into the intake. As with any fluid, do it in short bursts so you don't hydrolock your engine. Either way, kiss your o2 sensors goodbye if you do this.

I cant stand idiot drivers either, I don't brake check anymore, I stopped doing that 15 years ago, instead when I have a tailgater that tailgates at all speeds, I slow down and look for the right place to wave them around, I cant stand the idea of being the reason for a wreck that got children hurt or worse, believe it or not, the slow down and wave around works better than anything I have found, I have also been known to exit wait 5 mins and then get back on the road, I might be mad as hell but that's better than causing a wreck and hurting people, the reason for the change in my heart was a wreck that I come up to where a person got mad at someone , and caused a wreck that got innocent people hurt, One other, motorcycles splitting lanes, or filtering , back in about 1979 or 80, I seen a wreck in person where a guy was splitting lanes, A child dropped a toy out of the window and opened door to get the toy, a guy on a bike doing about 30mph ran into the open door killing the child getting his toy, killing the 12 year old sitting in the passenger front seat, and the bike rider lived for about 6 hours, I cant forget that and everytime I see or hear a bike rider getting mad because he cant split lanes gets me mad because it reminds me of that wreck

If you have any age or any brains, you know that back in the 70's things were different. For you to say something like that with you being told that 2 children died and the motorcycle rider died because the bike rider was splitting lanes or filtering like I heard someone else say, The bike rider was 100% at fault and was reasponsable for all 3 deaths, and you say that the child should have been taught to not open the door, I wish that the childrens father was close enough to see you and reach you, what if it happened to your kids, and you seen it coming and happen without being fast enough to stop your kids from being killed? I HOPE that no parents have to deal with anything like that, INCLUDING YOU, PROFESSOR WALRUS, what a fool you are for saying something so heartless

When I was in high school, my father and I put a 3-speed on the floor in my old pickup, but we left the gear stick from the automatic on the column, no longer connected. One day when someone was tailgating me on one of the back roads near my hometown, it suddenly occurred to me to just casually drop the old AT lever into reverse. That woke the guy up pretty quick. :)

I own a full size 1841 mountain howitzer with carrige and all, and I do cannon shoots with it, as a joke I always load it with barrel pointing backwards in my truck, I rarely have tailgaters LOL, but I have had a couple cops pull me over just to check me and it out, but your idea is pretty good too. P.S. another good way is rig some smoke gernades up so like at the push of the button it looks like your truck is about to catch fire LOL.
