I let them tailgate until I get to the place where the cops regularly shoot radar, then I move over, watch them speed by, and let the police teach them a lesson.

This is similar to my grocery shopping strategy. I, sometimes, stand in the longest checkout line instead of trying to choose the fastest checkout line. It is a lesson in patience and I always feel better after checking out.

This is a profound lesson. If you are feeling attacked and can reframe your thinking and choose not to retaliate, or even see what has happened as an attack, you win. Defending yourself is justified, of course, but with road rage, we can confuse a personal insult with an attack that has to be answered in kind. When you rise above it, you are at peace.

Oh my gosh! I work in a college town and have had more than one tailgaters on me! I just want to slam on the brakes but if I did I'd probably be the one who was hurt or die! We have a few friends who were in Iraq and they found themselves thinking the same way when they came home. In their life a fast approaching vehicle was never a good thing! It sent off sirens in their head, a warning signal. I work in a college town and these people think if they get close enough you'll speed up! I admit, there's times I want to slam on the brakes but of course, I would never do it. I was rear ended last year and I drive even more cautiously now. Be careful out there!

I like letting speeding tailgater go by so they can clear the cops out up ahead for me. I also get the super slow drivers ahead of me then they pull off and the tailgater is up on me right away after they pull off. Some people speeding up have a real emergency not most but some. In my area, there aren't many places to pull off unless you pull into a business which causes sometimes 5 minutes to pull out again due to traffic so I usually slow enough at a passing zone to let em pass. I have to say I don't drive slow my average speed is the limit to 15 mph over the limit but here in CT if you give slightly to much distance between cars the entitled ME FIRST people will right turn in front of you then start using their phone or drive 10 mph under the limit or slower. I just wish people would learn to drive with the rules of the road. I also wish that with all this technology the DOT would make advancements on traffic lights that could sense when the lights changing for no reason or when there's only one car left to make it through before making that person stop. A standing car make more pollution and wastes more gas getting back to speed. End of my rant. Thanks for the honest videos! Love em!

    • @discerningmind
      @discerningmind 5 лет назад

I live in CT too, and I know exactly what you mean. And some sort of smart traffic light system would be welcome. As you know CT roads are always bringing you to a stop or causing a break in momentum. I swear our roads are designed to wear-out your car. And that's OK with the "Tax You To Death" state as the repair parts and labor taxes generate a lot of income for our greedy politician's.

You're certainly not the only one with a pet peeve for tailgaters, Kevin. Where I live (British Columbia, Canada) people are getting more and more impatient on the roads and insist on driving 10 to 20 km OVER the speed limit. They freak out and become abusive if others are driving at the speed limit. I hug that right lane and gladly let them pass by.... But why should I take abuse - when I AM following the rules? What I want to know is why there are not more tickets issued to these people who abuse their rights, exceed the limits and then harass others who do not? (rhetorical question for the authorities...)

Driving my RV, I know people can't see beyond it to pass … the result is tailgaters galore. However, I do two things … 1. move my RV over to the side when the way is clear to pass and slow down/signal (not all people are smart and understand what I'm doing) which leads to 2. pull over and let them pass when I can get off of the road safely. It's so much more relaxing to drive with all the idiots well ahead of me !! :-)

In the Waco area of Texas,
if you start to get close at all to a car ahead,
the lead driver pulls to the side to encourage the oncoming car to pass.
It’s the most courteous gesture ever.
Now I do it too here in utah.
I think it really puts smiles on their face.
I just hope they learn as fast as I learned this wonderful gesture.
    Pass it on,
Make them smile, let them pass.
    Btw,
it’s illegal to hug or travel on the inside left lane anyways at any speed.
And your supposed to by law to yield to oncoming passing cars on the inside lane as well
    AT ANY SPEED.

Oh my GOODNESS! I just commented on your thoughts relating to taking a break.... I watched your video where you showed me your son dancing on your porch! Then, I looked through your playlist and, OMG, you are feeling the same things I feel when I go to/from work from our homestead deep in the woods of Missouri! Tailgaters!!! I become paranoid about this.... and I never felt this way before! I lived in a huge city most of my life.... never thought about it. BUT! Now we live on long green lonely lovely roads and my life is filled with peace, wind, and 40 minutes to work.... but over time.... I became extremely nervous and frightened.... made worse at night in the dark and the new cheaper LED lights that burst in white light behind you as they roar up. FEAR!!! Then, I would talk to myself, try to keep myself calm. and after counseling for the concern.... I, too, just pull over and let the people pass. PEACE! Works every time. My husband is thrilled! Take care...... we have so so much in common!!!! My husband, by the way, is a great cook!

Thank you for your military service. And thank you for making this important video. I also live in a deep country area. I adopted the "pull-over and let them by" practice a good ten years ago and I can state that it is the best thing to do. I drive the speed limit or below it because I couldn't stand it if I hit an animal and caused it to suffer and/or die. However, pulling-over doesn't work on the expressway, so if I'm driving less than the speed limit I use the right hand lane and the cruise control, and if a tailgater comes upon me on I turn-on the 4-way flashers. It generally takes a minute or so with the 4-way flashers operating for it to sink into the tailgater's mind that my car is going to speed up for them, and as well the flashers are a clear warning that they're going to be in big trouble if they run into my car. A police officer won't take it lightly that a tailgater ran into a vehicle using the right hand lane, maintaining a consistent safe speed (cruise control) and the 4-way flashers operating to forewarn the tailgater to increase the distance.

Funny story for you guys....One time I was going down a County Road in the left lane at about the speed limit and a guy came blazing by my right and he gave me the middle finger as he came back into the left lane in front of me....
About a mile up the road he was in the last car of a line of cars in the left lane at the next stoplight, I honked my airhorn at him as I passed him in the left turn lane and laughed my face off as he threw an object out of his window at my work truck. I got through the next green light faster than he did even though I was driving slower 😂😂😂

Love that view! I'm right with you buddy on gauging your mood regularly to see how grounded you are, I've tried it myself when I've had issues with anxiety. You have to reward yourself for the things you did do right, even if the outcome wasn't 100 percent.
On tailgaters, I do the same thing as you these days. I used to be a real hoon but never tailgated simply for the safety factor if the person in front steps on the brake suddenly. The people that do will get what's coming to them eventually, you did the right thing by moving out of their way so they can get to their next accident as quickly as possible. All the best!

I have to agree with you on this one. I've been driving full time now since my husbands become disabled, and he thinks I'm nuts but I just let those people go on by me, and half the time I say out loud in the car, "Go on dude. You do you!" as they pass. I usually catch up with them at a light down the road and have a little giggle because they are so unaware they don't even realize that all the people they passed just caught up with them. lol

  • @mikemcnulty487
    @mikemcnulty487 3 года назад

Very nice thanks Crazy Lake, I like your approach to that problem. The point here is it is not just about tailgating per se, it’s about being aware of actions by other people that may negatively impact on your mental or emotional well-being, and finding a wise course of action to lessen the ongoing impact on your mental well-being. That may involve, as here, putting aside ego or self to achieve a better/happier outcome for you. You could apply similar techniques to negative interactions with people that can impact on your mental well-being for extended periods

I am always fighting against my ego which always tells me to "ignore them and get mad" but now I am just thinking to pull over and let them go. I have bumper stickers about tail gating haha so it deff helps so much but at the same time there are people who try to push me even more and bully me.

Put a reflection chrome vinyl sticker on the rear of the vehicle to make them back off if they don't know that they're headlights are hurting at your eyes at night. Or during the day when sunshine can reflect lights. The cops can't be there to correct these tailgaters. Ordering some chrome mirror vinyl sticker to put on my car rear. Or make a big 2 inches flipper to reflect their own lights on them or sunshine reflection on tailgaters. Turn off the flip switch so that the none-tailgaters won't be upset if i still have it on and needs to switch back to none reflection mode.

Yes tailgaters are annoying but worse ... IMO ... are those speeding on curvy mountain roads in the dark with fog.
One morning I was leaving work ... it had rained all night ... stopped around 2 am and the fog rolled in. I was off work around 4 and the visibility was maybe 1/2 car length ahead. The headlights hitting the fog were not much help.
I was familiar with the road so that was helpful. About 2 miles down the road I caught up with 2 other cars that were creeping along in the fog. The 3 of us traveled down the mountain together until we were almost at the bottom. There was mountain on each side ... then a canal crossing that then leveled off into foothill flatter land.
Suddenly behind me there was a speeding car that passed all 3 of us on a 2 lane road between the mountains. Gone in the fog as quickly as he showed up.
We reached the canal and apparently that driver had stayed on the road over the canal because on each side of the road to the guard rails was gravel. Pretty slippery stuff for a speeding car. The fog was pretty much gone at this level.
Fog in this area is patchy and strange because part of the area is farm or open cattle range. The 3 of us continued on our way headed into town . We hit the final stretch just out of town when we see our speeding nemesis had skidded off a curve before the straight away ... through a barbed wire fence and into an open field. The driver was standing beside his car cell phone in hand stuck in the mud up to his wheel wells. Unfortunate for him a tow truck was not in our caravan.
Driver one pulled over ... driver 2 and I honked ... waved and went on.
I figured the *karmic bitch* was lending this speeder all of the helping hand he needed or deserved.

In my state we have tail gaters all the time. Moreso in business areas. Some places the freeway speeds are at 75. I never go past that, and set my cruise control. But there are times when I come upon some people older than myself that go slower. So I just wait for the traffic in the other lanes to clear and go around them. When I drive I do not tailgate. Reason being is that I never know if someone is gonna hit the break, and I don't want to damage my vehicle. We have THE most expensive auto insurance in the U.S. because of No Fault. I absolutely hate it, but they will not change. Problem is the seniors, like myself, are stuck with the high payment, but the younger kids are the ones having the accidents. I'll put it this way. It costs more to insure our vehicles than to insure a 2,700 sq. ft. House, with everything in it.

That's a great idea and where there are safe places to pull over I do. But there's not many places to pull over safely around here with all the ditches on the sides of the roads. I continue going the speed limit and when it's safe for the person tailgating to go around then I slow down and give them room and time to pass before picking up speed again. There are so many wrecks from speeders on cell phones that it frightens me to have to drive somewhere sometimes. Thanks for your morning ramble. Hope you have a great day!

I decrease my speed by 1 MPH every two minutes. The subtlety of it is very important. Never show a brake light. Let them be surprised that they are having to either slow down or hit you. They will soon tire of the constant attentiveness required for the act of tailgating a vehicle with an inconsistent speed.

I dislike being tailgated but dislike being in a car with someone who tailgates even more. Cars weigh about 4,000 lbs (I looked this up). I don't want to get rear end by something that heavy. Geez slow your roll tailgates and enjoy what's around you because it might not be here tomorrow.

Amen! Yes. They are always at the next red light or exit waiting no matter how fast and angry they pass me. I leave my cruise on 48 mph these days. My gas mileage is in the low 30s versus the low 20s AND I get a 33% discount on my insurance now just for driving slower. I'm saving money left and right. My auto maintenance costs are at an all time low. I've been investing in dash cameras to record the idiots on the roads. It is very entertaining. Leave earlier, drive slower, enjoy your drive.

Good for you. I'm with you, brother. A couple of weeks ago I had a 70-ish year old man on a motorcycle on my butt. He must have been a hair away from my car. I don't know how he was not touching my bumper. It was on a one way road, but I pulled over and let him pass eventhough it was not a place should have pulled over. Where does he have to go in a hurry? If I'm on the interstate and they are tailgating me and I am not in the farthest left lane, then I just take my time and ignore them. I'll be waiting for that chicken feet recipe demonstration.😁

you're smart for pulling over. in fact that's a form of respect to the other motorist. sometimes you happen to be in a little of a hurry and not going way to fast but stepping it up a bit. i drive kinda fast but sometimes i don't and i also have the respect enough to know if i see someone going a bit fast and catching up i try and move over to get out of the way. it also keeps the guy from having to swerve all over and switch lanes and possibly kill someone else just because you wanna teach that guy a lesson. he is gonna go around but now he has to do it dangerously. we are all guilty of driving too fast or too slow at times. just have respect for the other guy and drive your own car not theirs. also if you get out of the way they are gone and you don't see them anymore

You need to leave 2 seconds of space between you and the vehicle in front of you to give yourself plenty of time to avoid a mishap.

Hell No! Somebody tailgates me they get brake checked! Be a cold day in hell when I let some idiot force me to pull over! Of course if you're not driving near the speed limit, then get the hell out of the way! Everybody needs a dash cam nowadays.

It's the thing to do. Just pull over and don't let it affect your day or mood. When we drive it's usually at scenery enjoying pace. I don't want to say we are Sunday drivers, but I guess that's what we are. We are retired so every time we get in a car for any distance we are not in a hurry. We look for deer and other wildlife, and see a lot more of it than most. We pull over and let a tailgater or anyone that's behind us pass. It's not that we go at a snails pace we usually drive close to the speed limit. But some people are always in a hurry and some just drive like lunatics. Country roads are winding and often drive ways come on to them. So we drive with others in mind. The interstate is a different story, we go with the flow of traffic. But yeah.......tailgaters don't get me upset.

Nice work! I too, frequently assist tailgaters to get beyond me, such as by turning into a parking lot, then resuming my trip, once they're long gone. And, if there's no convenient place to turn into, or to pull over, leaving several spaces between me and the car ahead ensures the tailgater needs only pass me to get one car ahead. Just a quick thought though, about that white van: Is it possible its driver makes a quick stop, like for coffee, along the way, which might help explain why you never fail to catch up to him?

If I have a load of junk on my truck and going to the landfill station, I will pull off and let people go past. Usually, at those times, I am going slower because I don't want something to blow off onto a driver's windshield. On those times that I am doing the speed limit, and I have someone right on my rear end, I just maintain the speed limit, never brake check them, just continue on figuring they should have left 5 mins sooner. There are a lot of little speed traps in our town. I make sure to do the speed limit at those spots bc there will be a cop sitting where he can't be seen at the beginning of them. One day, I was doing my slow 24 mph with an out of state driver right on my rear. As we came to the stop light, he honked, motioned for me to roll down my window. This guy actually THANKED ME for slowing him down !! I told him...watch your speed !! Just because you saw that police car sitting there, there will surely be another one farther up the highway, and sure enough, there was !!

I had been taught well from my Dad to be on time wherever I go in life no matter what. So from a teenage driver to a current day adult I have always given myself plenty of time to get to my destinations. It annoys me that some people on the road with me who are "late for work" or just a natural lead foot driver and they feel the need to ride my a$$. I live in a rural area where when I'm in those situations I will pull over and let the jackhorse pass me. And sometimes there's miles of road where I cannot do that, which causes some to pass me up a winding hill without knowing what's on the other side and risking several lives if a vehicle were to hit them head on. I would rather arrive safely than in several pieces. Ya do what ya gotta do, Kevin, to keep enjoying your life, friends, property and family. Peace.

Our single track country roads are so narrow here in the UK that it often impossible to pass for miles that I always let the tailgaters pass by as soon as I can pull in safely...let them crash if they want to..I know what's a safe speed on country roads You never know what might jumpout on the road deer cattle sheep etc.
The other thing that really buggs me is people that don't know how to reverse... I have over the years come to love the expression on usually male van drivers when I back up roads often for half a mile ( or much more ) smoothly, especially as I am an older female that can barely look over the steering wheel. Their expression is priceless as
I put my hand up to them from the pull in to say you are welcome! DX

We go on a "deer ride" out in the country every other night. we have abt a 40-45 mile route and we count the deer, quail, raccoons, rabbits, and tom turkeys and peahens. We love it. and we drive slowly too. @40 -45 mph. with all the bumps, and potholes, gravel roads, and curves in road, we feel safe going that speed. When someone comes up behind us and doesn't pass within a few minutes, he puts on his R turn signal and pulls over to the right as much as possible. and waves at them out the window to pass. If they dont pass, we pull out and go 10 miles per hr slower. we only had to do that once. We are both retired veterans.

Was just on a ride in our side by side and a Nissan Titan was tailgating and a Cummins was just up ahead and he was going the speed limit so I was going around 37 (limit was 35) so I slowed down and let the Titan driver view the truck he should have bought.

May God bless you and yours this beautiful morning! Save money up for a hydrolic log splitter. Thing has saved my life. Burning wood for 40 years paid for it, lol. As to tailgating: you are doing the right thing by pulling over. Might I suggest the 1 in a million chance that they are in a hurry to be somewhere more important than I am headed?
