I'd still urge you to add (home-made) steel edging 3 to 6 inchs deep around all your paths and bed edges, otherwise you'll always struggle to keep those beautiful crisp edges you've been digging out. But what a wonderful project, it's looking so good already.
Stick with the 'small' machinery, it will help reduce soil compaction which would not help.

As someone mentioned it's definitely worth using membrane under the gravel. I would suggest using metal eding to give permanent sharp edges. You can buy purpose made edging which we used initially but to save money we made our own. I used mild steel which i order to my exact height dimension and cut rebarto hold itin place, spot welded and it worked.
