Ten years ago, when I was lost in Australia (backpacking) I saw the movie 'Garden State' on tv in the middle of the night. Aftar that I looked up the soundtrack, including music by the shins. I then found this song. It felt like destiny.
"But nothing happens every time I take one on the chin You're Himmler in your coat, you don't know how long I have been Watching the lantern dim Starved of oxygen So give me your hand, and let's jump out the window" I cant describe how this makes me feel, but its amazing. Amazing vocals and an all-round beautiful song. I'm so glad I discovered the song 16 years later.
I discovered this song while listening to an Indie playlist on Spotify and I just found out that it's been 13 YEARS since it was released??? Edit: 17 YEARS since it was released
i see question marks but i dont see a question. maybe you are looking for confirmation that it has been 13 year since release, ok yes it has been 13 years, you are correct
My mom went to high school with the brother of the drummer of the shins and they where in the same friend group. I think it’s cool cause this is one of my favorite bands
The planet is infact irradiated. Congratulations. Blackhole. Oblivion. I'm becoming God. I get to enjoy it with God. Didn't care to remember or read anything about the apocalypse, armageddon, or Ragnarok?
The Shins played such a huge part in my life for many years and when my daughter passed this is the song that didn't make sense until I lost her. Such a great song! So thankful for subpop records and the shins
Oh, I get it. This song is about living the way you want to, no matter how different you are. And in the video they are doing something as strange as stealing balloons from a car dealership, but it's part of their lives and they enjoyed it. I like how these guys can relate the videos to their songs in almost unnoticeable ways sometimes. That's cool. This is one of my new favorite songs and music videos. I love it! Every part of it!
Born to multiply Born to gaze into night skies All you want's one more Saturday Well look here until then They gonna buy your life's time So keep your wick in the air and your feet in the fetters 'Til the day we come in doing cartwheels We all crawl out by ourselves And your shape on the dance floor Will have me thinking such filth I'll gouge my eyes You'd be damned to be one of us, girl Faced with a dodo?s conundrum I felt like I could just fly But nothing happend every time I tried Woo, ooh! I’m an Aussie expat and this made me miss my home so much, even tho it seems to have nothing to do without Australia lol. When I was in high school I smuggled balloons out of the science classroom in my socks
Apparently James started writing the song while living in Perth. And he just never changed the title “Australia” from his notes so the band just kept it. :)
Kennedy640 this song is about boring 9-5 jobs and how they drain the life out of humans. if look closely to the lyrics you'll understand. I remember being a ski bum in Colorado with my flip phone having made this song my ring tone anytime somebody called. I’d listen to the Shins all day while snowboarding in the backcountry before work. Life is wild.

It's so creative (like all their other videos); the video starts with James Mercer dying as an old man and the rest of the video looks back on his relationship with his children. Brilliant.
I caught them live twice just a few years ago. They sound amazing. I highly recommend going if you can. Sleeping Lessons sounded even better in person.

Thumbs up if this song makes you feel at the top of the Empire State Building looking down at all the cars and then turning around to see yourself dead in your own bedroom then realizing that you've been dead this entire time
This has to be one of the most underrated songs of all time. Never fails to put you in such a good mood as well. Great video to boot!
Yeah in a world of garbage music that is massively popular this is so low key for some reason
Agreed: a canon its included in. Great band, thats why
One of the most underrated bands too
Yes. Been repeating this during work to help me focus, alongside with coffee. Perfect
@@MuhMuhMamaLuigi yep. I like it for that. It’s peppy and catchy but the lyrics can really throw you in a funk.

and lyrical
and musical
So true... His voice and pronouncing is just so unique... What a giant
Man 2007 was a rough year for me. Sometimes it's sad hearing songs you like when it vividly reminds you of a bad time.
Ya think?
Your name is " six beers for breakfast" no wonder why your life was rough
Cody Schiffel hahaha, your comment made my night!!! XD
Six Beers for Breakfast i mean, like, he's not wrong
Still a catchy song though, I'd say this specific song lifts my spirits.

More like synchronicity
One of my fave films. 😊
The banjo at 1:49 makes this song. Out of the blue, and then disappears just as quickly...
Agreed. Such a nice touch. (Although it appears in the final chorus as well...)
I thought my USB device kept connecting and disconnecting.

I heard it when it first came out and couldn't find it since then!! My 13y long search is finally over!
Ah, welcome to Mercerland. I't's never too late and we're never too many.
Australia is where my old teacher is!! He was my favorite teacher.. still is to this day, I clicked this song on Spotify because of that reason.
Video looks light-hearted
Music sounds happy
Lyrics are quite unpleasant.

This is such a cute video. Love the song. Great to skip around to with an umbrella.
The wonders of James Mercer. In my opinion, the best lyricist alive, and if he were a "poet" (which he is...), one of the best of our time.
I do believe he is the unsung Bob Dylan of our time.
Amazing tune. One of my favourites, from now until the end of all time. Thank you The Shins.
