I've never heard of MGMT, but I was on an Empire of the Sun music binge and I saw comments about the similarities/reminiscence to MGMT. After checking MGMT out, I can safely say that I see what people were saying, and I love it! Adding this band to my playlist!
this was filmed in 2009. he was only 18 months old at the time, wow this kid would nearly be in high school and close to a teenager now?! time really does fly....
This is a really great representation of how terrifying childhood really is….sometimes I’ll come across some movie clip I seen when I was really young and I swear I remembering it being just the most insane scary thing ever, then find out 30 years later it’s just a sad pile of silicon and corn syrup.
Lmao, my Mum still reminds me that when i was a kid if she wanted me to stay put in a room all she had to do was place a Kermit the frog doll in the doorway, apparently it terrified me

As someone who grew up with a negligent mother, this music video describes the feeling perfectly, especially the animated part where you view the mother as divine, where her divine love is unattainable. And because of this figure, you get limited protection from this big bad world, and you are overrun by fear from everything. I know they maybe did this kid bad, but honestly this music video is such a good piece of art, and the song describes the same feeling accurately. It's no surprise to me that this song is this famous.

For the ones who care about the toddler: The video has been criticized for its treatment of the toddler who appears to be truly frightened throughout the video, although it is stated on the MGMT website, "No children were harmed in the making of this video." Stereogum noted that the video "essentially polarized everyone old enough (but not too old) to know what the internet is." While MTV noted that "They really don’t make videos like this any more … mostly for legal reasons", The band later released a "behind the scenes" video through their official RUclips channel that shows the toddler laughing while interacting with the puppets and actors in monster costumes. ~Wiki
Fun tip: If there’s monsters in your room, just keep your arms and legs beneath the covers. The monsters cannot legally grab you if you’re under the covers.
This is my child's face when I was an abuser The expression of her confusion and terror has forever been etched into my mind. I miss her. I hope they are doing well, and wish them the best. Remember. It's better to walk away. As long as you know you can live with the choice. You make; But do -- control yourself. You won't like being haunted by the memories.
GAMERLORD I'm a mother of two who fought for custody to protect my children from their dad who was actually for real for real abusing my children. I don't support child abuse at all.
Jack Yamat I took my share of abuse and I loathe those who take out their anger on their children. It only creates Monsters of us. I love you :) And thank you for protecting your children.
Considering if they didn’t completely traumatize the child, this was an incredible take on how scary the world is when ur young. Specially with such a vivid imagination already… I love how they portray the mother as oblivious too…. Like our parents will often write off children’s fear of monsters, or when they say they see something in their room and say something like “oh, you just have an . overactive imagination”… Exactly.. & that’s what makes it all the more terrifying… doesn’t make it any less real to that child
“He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster . . . when you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
He who looks into the abyss realizes that there is nothing looking back at him. The only thing he sees is his own character, Ricky, do you understand, bud? The abyss? The shit abyss?"
edgarhons The child isn’t acting lmao it’s just being told to run and cry. It doesn’t know wtf is going on. It is told to be happy and be sad. It does what it is told it’s not the same as acting I don’t know the word in English.

The phrase "if you gaze long enough into the abyss, the abyss gazes back into you" is often attributed to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It conveys the idea that when one is confronted for a prolonged period with dark, unfathomable, or disturbing aspects of life or existence, it can have a profound effect on the observer. The phrase suggests that such contemplation can lead to a personal, internal reflection of the darkness or complexity being observed, potentially impacting one's own psyche or being. It is often used to express the concept that prolonged exposure to negativity or darkness can have a transformative influence on an individual

I've recently read about them and that those most successful songs, kids, electric feel etc. Are basically the intentionally most generic sounding pop songs, made as an ironic statement in their college time. So it is double the irony that it has gotten as far as it has. I applaud them.
Sure they created the skeleton of the songs intending them to be cliche, but of course by the time they were producing LP they were clearly more authentically engaged with the whole creative process. If they wanted the final release to be trite and uninspired they surely could have done so, but they put some real craftsmanship into making one some of the only mainstream millennial music that'll really stand the test of time. The hook may be simple af but nothing remotely like this was in mainstream rotation before, and i think by the time it came around they were absolutely hip to all that.
"Control yourself, take only what you need from it" has been such a powerful sentence in my life

The song was made then the music vid was made in 2009
I listened to this song on the radio 😂 i feel old but i listened to it in middle/highschool.
he's probably not in high school yet i was born in 05 and i'm a freshmen
If he was 18 months old when this was filmed and published in 2009 he’d be 13ish

I used to hear this when I was younger but not the video only the song

Is Jesus your Lord and Savior?
This is a really great representation of how terrifying childhood really is….sometimes I’ll come across some movie clip I seen when I was really young and I swear I remembering it being just the most insane scary thing ever, then find out 30 years later it’s just a sad pile of silicon and corn syrup.
Lmao, my Mum still reminds me that when i was a kid if she wanted me to stay put in a room all she had to do was place a Kermit the frog doll in the doorway, apparently it terrified me
The Unsolved Mysteries guy used to scare tf out of me lol. That's the one that sticks out most
Bro you literally just described half of my childhood in a nutshell
We’re living in the time that’ll show the future that diversity and mixing of cultures doesn’t work 🤷♂️ cause if it isn’t working now what’s the chance it’ll work in the future. I only see the world getting worse as time goes on
Bill & Ted Bogus Journey's hell scene with the easter bunny stuck in my mind and I never knew what movie it was from until I was like 19. That scene still makes me feel uncomfortable.
You know normally I would say this kid's fighting demons trying not to punch any of them but literally he's fighting demons

you've probably heard this before, but actually, the hardest part of making this video was getting the kid to cry. in the behind the scenes, he's shown having a lot if fun filming this, no matter how traumatizing it might seem.

No
Imagine listening to this when it came out from a obscure snowboarding DVD and you can't find it on RUclips for 4 more years. Drove me nuts trying to find this song. When I heard it in 2007 I was upset I couldn't find it. Fast forward to 2013 and it becomes a popular song and is suggested on your RUclips. Everything comes full circle.
That's it, that's all! ;)
Haha
My brother showed me this song when I was really young. I was listening to a song that reminded me of it somehow and I found all the old songs I used to listen to. Gave me nostalgia.

You couldn’t have worded that better.

For the ones who care about the toddler:
The video has been criticized for its treatment of the toddler who appears to be truly frightened throughout the video, although it is stated on the MGMT website, "No children were harmed in the making of this video." Stereogum noted that the video "essentially polarized everyone old enough (but not too old) to know what the internet is." While MTV noted that "They really don’t make videos like this any more … mostly for legal reasons", The band later released a "behind the scenes" video through their official RUclips channel that shows the toddler laughing while interacting with the puppets and actors in monster costumes. ~Wiki

Thank you for your kind words. Also, I'm glad you survived. :)
What an iconic song. Anyone watching December 2024?
Considering if they didn’t completely traumatize the child, this was an incredible take on how scary the world is when ur young. Specially with such a vivid imagination already…
I love how they portray the mother as oblivious too…. Like our parents will often write off children’s fear of monsters, or when they say they see something in their room and say something like “oh, you just have an . overactive imagination”…
Exactly.. & that’s what makes it all the more terrifying… doesn’t make it any less real to that child

I feel like if that was the case they would be able to make more hits than just the most basic sounding song
Yeah I only found that out lately
