I was just bony hands as cold as a winter pole You held a warm stone out new flowing blood to hold Oh what a contrast you were To the brutes in the halls My timid young fingers held a decent animal. Over the ramparts you tossed The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers Tied to a brick Sweet as a song The years have seemed short but the days were long. Cool of a temperate breeze from dark skies to wet grass We fell in a field it seems now a thousand summers passed When our kite lines first crossed We tied them into knots And to finally fly apart We had to cut them off. Since then it's been a book you read in reverse So you understand less as the pages turn Or a movie so crass And awkwardly cast That even I could be the star. I don't look back much as a rule And all this way before murder was cool But your memory is here and I'd like it to stay Warm light on a winter's day. Over the ramparts you tossed The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers Tied to a brick Sweet as a song The years have seemed short but the days go slowly by Two loose kites falling from the sky Drawn to the ground and an end to flight
"When the kite lines first crossed We tied them into knots To finally fly apart, we had to cut them off" This perfectly describes what I'm experiencing right now, the aftermath of a relationship I thought and hoped would never end. When something so powerful and meaningful dies, the only way to avoid being taken down with it is to divorce yourself from it completely. To deny or ignore whatever feelings remain. I can only hope in the end that we both learned something, that it wasn't in vain.
The overwhelming feeling of nostalgia, memories of simpler times when we felt more innocent and falling in love was the biggest adventure in the world, and as time passes, the overbearing burdens of life's realities come to the surface to tarnish that hope and innocence until everything is a bittersweet memory. To me, this tune makes me miss myself and my youth and makes me wish I could just remember how it felt like to be so free and open-hearted.
2022 here, I came to say that this song is still one of the most beautiful ever written, and it should be FAR more known than it is. Actually no, I take that back. I like it the way it is, one of my little secret songs that I’ll listen to till that day when I’ll finally head to the clearing at the end of the path. Until then, this song will remain close to my heart.
Yes, with the current state of the music industry for the most part, being able to go back and listen to these beautiful and well written songs is just a joy....
17yrs since this upload. I was broke , had no means to support myself. Comes an angel & lifts me off poverty. She’s my wife & thanks to her , I’m on my feet. Have a career & will leave everything to her my dearest & only boy. ❤❤❤
I always loved this song growing up, but it hits extra hard once you've had some life experiences that kind of mirror the sentiment of the song in some way.
The Shins are a band that I can listen to their songs for years, and never totally get it. It takes a bit to pull apart the meanings but once you do, it's amazing.
For example my favorite song by them is Australia, it took me a long while to find the meaning of that one... it refrences to freedom (I feel like I could just fly) while Australia was a prison continent.
This song is just flawless. The lyrics, riffs, tone, the feel, the video, and pretty much everything about it truly amazes me. This band is just so amazing.
My first boyfriend introduced me to this song...To me it's all the feelings of first love, feeling "understood", heartache...Somehow listening to this song feels like listening to my life lol. Deep.
If we're talking favorite lines, "Warm light...and a winters day." It's how I always felt when that special someone was sitting there just waiting for the daily hug. Relationships really are about as thin as paper, and it's so easy for these connections to tear, whether it's disease, misery, differences, etc. Treasure the people in your life and love them for who they are now.
lets me remember, and feel the exquisite pain of my mate dying. It was unbareable, but Im still here, out on the other side. He loved this song, too -- the sad, little, paper cows hooked us from the first time we watched the video. How wonderful that it would come to remind me of him so.
The Shins are just so relaxing. On a bad day I hit The Shins on my iPod and I'm almost immediately happy. They make awesome, meaningful music that should be more relevant today. It's just peaceful...
I 'discovered' these guys years ago, but only recently started really enjoying them. I didn't know what I was missing. I would almost go so far as to call Chutes Too Narrow a masterpiece.

it's such a beautiful thing to have a deep feeling, insightful person share these thoughts and feelings with us and through music. what I love most about the shins is Mercer's lyrics.they're so true to human life, never apologetic and sometimes harsh. but so honest. will love this song and the Shins and Broken Bells forever. and my kids will too lol..
@@TheInfamousBertman yeah, there aren't many recent comments and yours was the oldest one I found. 14 years is a really long time and so I felt I should reply; when you commented this I was just 4 lmao. Hope you're doing well!

Some songs have power that exceeds their notes and words. This is one of those songs, but it’s been a while and so I forgot how powerful it was. I’m sitting at work now trying to hide the tears so my coworkers don’t think I’m weird. Well maybe I AM weird, but I know the Shins would understand.
For years I've had the '60's, '70's and a bit of the '80's on something of a loop. So refreshing to have somer newer, great musicians to get into. James Mercer's voice is superb. Discovered Broken Bells first and checked the band members’ music further. The cows add to this (I think), it's just lovely. Thanks for sharing.
As canções do The Shins são maravilhosas. Trazem uma leveza que a música sempre deveria trazer. O vocalista tem um timbre muito especial e o seu jeito de cantar atrai. Enfim, The Shins traz um universo musical novo onde é prazeroso viver.
Love that this song can still give me chills after listening to it and playing it on guitar hundreds and hundreds of times. Was the first Shins song I ever heard and I was immediately captivated, a very rare thing for me.
I used to listen to this song walking to school in the snow in the months following my dad's suicide, and every time I listen to it, it brings me right back. And funny how perfectly the lyrics portray how I felt. A stinging but subtle, horrific but beautiful grief
I've loved this song for the longest time. I first saw this video in American Eagle of all places, and though weird, it just seems like the right video for this song
this song (and album) reminds me of my first trip out to montana, and the rocky mountains, in my early 20s. remember driving around marveling at the incredible beauty of the scenery, and this was the perfect soundtrack for that. #memories
I don't listen to other songs from this band, not really my cup of beer. But these are still to this day some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. Impressive.

This reminds me of the time i toured part of Europe with a band and me and this girl musician spent most of our free time together seeing the sites in the various cities we played at. Her name was Morna. She was really shy and had green eyes. We spent the whole tour together and she friendzoned me so hard at the end I thought my heart was going to explode. She went home with one of the vocalists who looked like a young Dave Duchovny that she barely knew. That's just how it goes these days.
How the hell does his mind conjure up words that encapsulate a feeling so well?
Umm…drugs?
Talent! A true creative.
James is an amazing poet as well as musician. He reminds me of Paul Simon when he was with Art Garfunkel.

Does anyone ever think a paper cow will make them cry? Gosh, me too. I'm glad I'm alone right now. Thank God for The Shins.
