People (especially of the time) attacked him for advocating "Tyranny" or being "evil". But it really seems like his philosophy was "If you are going to be a autocrat you might as well rule over a peaceful realm"

It was the hypocrites that attacked him most feverishly.

This is my 7th time going through _The Prince_ (over about a 30 year time period). I didn't see Machiavelli as "Machiavellian" the first time I read it and I still don't now.
Whoever made that association either didn't grasp the context/purpose of this book correctly.... *OR* was "Machiavellian" themselves (wicked and scheming) and made that association so that people (especially righteous ones) would reject Machiavelli and _The Prince_ without investigation.
I'm just speculating, but I've heard this about other books too. Doing this is sometimes known as "poisoning the well."
