MVP Thank you
I’m half done with Impel Down now and it’s EXCELLENT.
Also past Merphy was a dumb dumb. I love Boa.
We all love her because she's beaaaautiful
I was hoping you would review amazon lily and impel down together
Well you're going to love the end of impel down and the next arc which is my favorite in the series.
You are in endgame now.
Boa is a great (albeit) ally for Luffy! Excited to watch! Been refreshing this morning! Happy Friday!
Merphy: I love Luffy so much
Boa: I also love Luffy so much
Merphy: ...and I took that personally.
Their battle will be legendary!
Luffy : I love meat
two replies with 39 likes
Merphy: I don't really need boa to simp over Luffy.
Also Merphy 5 minutes earlier : I love Luffy so so much, isn't he the best! Gosh, isn't he perfect.
lol
Haha so true
Somebody's jealous
Accurated!
I mean Boa is literally romantically simping for luffy while Merphy is just appreciating luffy as a written character. They aren’t really the same all things considered.
Oda's answer to the reason Luffy didn't turn to stone is my favorite thing. "The reason Luffy is unaffected by Boa Hancock's power is that he is only in love with adventure and food."
We stan our asexual king.
He is the real ace, eh.
I am not sure if he is asexual. He could be as well aromantic.
@@sythrin144 Nope, Luffy is very Romantic, in fact the first arc is called Romance Dawn which refers to the Dawn of Luffy's Romance to be the King of Pirates.
I assumed it was more about attraction and because Boa is the most attractive woman in the world her power works on pretty much everyone, but luffy just doesn't care about anything like that.
Also haki is stated to be able to defend against some devil fruit powers but if the devil fruit user has better haki then it will work. Oda just kind of plays that as he feels but it gets a bit more consistent later on with the strongest characters
Merphy: "Who put this set-up arc in my way?"
*kicks Amazon Lily*

yes
Love this so much
Most people: "Merphy makes videos reviewing One Piece"
Intellectuals: "Merphy makes videos professing her love for Luffy"
Merphy is Boa Hancock confirmed.
@@emperorluffy6001 i mean in her videos she has often shot beams turning surrounding people into stones so checks out
Lol, unfortunately it is not Haki that keeps Luffy safe. It is because her powers only work on those that are aroused by her looks...and the only thing that turns Luffy on is Meat.
Lol
Yup
Spoiler
Boa can ask Ivankov if she can have some meat for Luffy
^that. Boa's power works only after she make people fall for her, and only for those. Marine captain hurt himself not to be distracted by her charm. And Luffy - he is simply not interested in sex nor beauty. Some theories say he is asexual and I agree.
Yeah, Luffy is Asexual.
Luffy bowing his head and recognizing that that wasn't a moment to fight but be diplomatic calls back to what Vivi taught him back in Drum Island when they were attacked by the natives of the Island and Vivi told Luffy to bow down because getting Nami healed was the priority and not fighting. Gotta love the consistency in this series.
Oh snap
Was about to comment this.

EXACTLY!!!!!
And after that, it was King Cobra bowing his head to Luffy for saving the kingdom
Ever since Vivi taught him to bow to people you want something from he does not hesitate to do so. I love Luffy
I never noticed this detail! Thank you for sharing
Boa is such a Giga Chad she looks down on people so hard she looks up.
Nailed it.
That's make Luffy the ULTIMATE Chad because he is the only one that seduced her and without trying
@@tarikizgua1835 nah Boa just decided he's the only one worthy.
lol
This is actually fairly common in One Piece where individuals have extreme personality and characterization. This due to Oda wanting it to be consistent with the "Classical Romance" theme in One Piece where everything is exaggerated. It's not only Hancock that has this over-the-top gestures and attitude. Some examples:
Zoro - So bad at directions that he can even get lost on a straight path
Sanji - Loves women so much that he is not able to hurt them, even if he gets killed in the process
Señor Pink - Is supposed to be the epitome of hard-boiled manliness that he uses a shoebrush to brush his teeth
Katakuri - Loves eating donut so much that he tore his own mouth by stuffing too much donut in it
Favorite line in this arc was Luffy’s reasoning that important people live in big buildings
Nailed it
It's kinda true though. 🤣
hes not wrong 😂
It makes sense
At the top
I think the Boa thing doesn't bother most fans because, in universe, she's already proven herself. She is the ruler, a warlord, and a notorious pirate and, while we don't see it, we know none of those things could have been easy to achieve. If anything, Oda having her "prove" herself would have made her look...weak. Bad b*thes don't go out of their way to squash bugs
Even with mihawk, Oda was careful to frame his actions (following krieg and fighting Zoro) as the whims of a bored man (like a cat playing with a mouse). When characters seem like they're trying to prove themselves (even just to the audience) it makes them feel like they *have* to prove themselves - and while Luffy's story does involve his need to prove himself to the world, established powers don't and therefore often have to be explored in different ways. it's what makes power dynamics so hard to write well and so interesting to delve into :)
Holy shit that's a good point Mihawk dosen't do much but we still respect him as the greatest swordsman
So making Hancock prove herself makes her weak
@@XJSPlays02 More than she already has? Yes, pretty much.
@@dfpl2554 what
@@XJSPlays02 She has already proven herself. To make it seem like she needs to prove herself more will make it seem like she's weak.

All according to the keikaku
Merphy: I liked this arc... I did not LOVED it....

That's One Piece. Even the weaker arks are still fun
I mean, it's still One Piece... Can you really blame her?
We all know, Amazon Lily is just a set-up of what to come.
I take a shot Everytime she says that
That’s the effect of one piece
As someone who deals with PTSD from sexual trauma, I cried like a baby with how thoughtfully and compassionately Oda depicted (or alluded to, tastefully) Boa Hancock and her sisters' trauma, showed how trauma can replicate itself through traumatized people in different ways with the Sun Pirates like Fisher Tiger vs the ones like Arlong as compared to Boa and her sisters...and most importantly Luffy telling her she didn't have to talk about it but actively listening when she insisted and responding with such care. I pretty much tearfully fell in love with Luffy as hard as Boa Hancock in that moment and Amazon Lily is a really special arc for me. Oda really did knock it the fuck out of the park and so did Luffy!
Yea i know boa hancock isant high on most peoples ranking of the 11 7 warlords and this arc isant vary good compared to like 90% of this series but we gotta give oda credit where its due because the implied sexual abuce themes with boas character is vary hard to do right and most other writers probrably would have screwed it up somehow but not oda he managed to pull of these themes about as best as possible ang i gotta give him respect for it
I think Boa's backstory is the only one he's ever listened to too. I wonder why that is.
I fucking love boa
“She’s competing with Sanji for the role of the biggest simp.”
Truer words have never been spoken.
Another competitor coming in dressrosa
@@shivanshsinha6032 I mean, less of a simp and more of a fan boy, but yes, I know who you’re referring to.
Technically she's not a simp if you consider the etymology of the word - anagram standing for "Sucker Idolizing Mediocre Pussy". You could argue that you could switch out the last word for "Penis", but that still wouldn't be correct, because as established way back in an SBS and confirmed in this very arc, Luffy's stretches, so it cannot be mediocre. Despite popular opinion it can't become giant though, because Gear Three is literally called "bone balloon". We'd need some sort of "soft tissue balloon" for it to be REALLY impressive though.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
@@eskreskao wtf😅😅🤣
@@eskreskao I'm pretty sure that was made after people were already using the term and it's simply a shortening of the word "simple"
From the perspective of Boa Hancock, luffy was the first person to not judge her for her beauty or for the mark of the celestial dragon. He showed her she can be truly herself around him, she didn't have to hide behind the veil of her beauty or a false strong demeanour in order to earn his respect or liking. This fact made Boa fall in love with luffy and made me admire luffy much more than I already did
Yea, huge character moment when he covered up her sister's mark even though they were in the middle of a battle and despite not understanding why they are ashamed by it instead of taking advantage and winning the match. It has nothing to do with the fight so he doesnt care about letting it interfere.
@@parzival988 yeah and overall is a very funny and Oda concept, to grab a character that hates all men except for one guy, who she loves with madness, but he is the most asexual thing in the world so he doesn't correspond her 😂
@@salvadorsalgado5212 The interesting thing about this, Luffy DOES understand that she’s beautiful, but to him that’s just as superficial as saying “Oh this person is tall, this person have a mustache”, he is that innocent
@@salvadorsalgado5212 Oda already clarified that Luffy isn't asexual though. The reason he doesn't normally respond to seeing a naked woman was not only because he's innocent, but also because he's normally ignores things that don't have to do with adventure or food, so he forgets to respond naturally to other things. His brain works like that.
Thus, he explained that the reason Luffy responded to seeing Nami's naked body, was because of Usopp's influence. Apparently, when Luffy's near Usopp (who's his same age), he goes into "bad kid on vacation" mode, where he responds more naturally to things like a "healthy young man" (in Oda's words).
@@jackjacques7495 Oda never said "healthy young man"
Also, it's entirely possible for someone to be romantic and asexual. Luffy can be romantically attracted to someone without being sexually attracted to them. While there is room for interpretation, I feel like Luffy's more of just imitating Usopp for fun.
Boa is the strongest, so strenght is beauty applies. The women of her island know her better than the viewer, so the viewer can inferr some stuff, without being shown explicitly. Also, it was said she's the only one with "emperors haki" , so there is that. Also, also, you can forgive her, "because she is beautiful"....
yes and if she's fight luffy at that moment, luffy will be dead.
I think you’ll find more forehead more power is the rule on Amazon Lily 🧐
I agree with your point fully but there's a thing called "show don't tell" and i agree with merphy too because it would have made boa better than she was in this arc
@@xcalixus i mean we saw her absolutely dominating the marines so it makes complete sense that shes the strongest woman on amazon lily?

Luffy is simultaneously the most socially inept and most socially aware character. He kind of bumbles through a lot of situations but when things are serious and he usually ends up saying or doing the things no one else seems capable of.
hes socially inept but emotionally mature
Just clarifying two points:
1) Haki will get A LOT more explanation later on.
2) Luffy resisting Boa Hancock's ability was NOT haki. Her powers were explained as only working on people who have even a inkling of lust in their heart. Luffy is pure of heart, so he remained unaffected.
Luffy is the best ace representation.
Actually the reason is because of Luffy's drive. All of Luffy's thoughts revolve around two things: becoming the pirate king, and his friends. At this point he was thinking more of the later, but usually is the first. Those two things get all of hiw will, so much that he literally doesn't care much about anything else. That's why Boa couldn't turn luffy to stone, he just doesn't care about women. He does find Boa attractive, Oda has explained this, but he doesn't have an interest for that type of romance. He just wants to be pirate king.
Luffy's truest loves are meat and freedom
Assexuality is power
When Oda asked about Luffy's reaction to Nami's happiness punch during post-Alabasta, he said that Luffy was just mimicking what Usopp was doing.
Luffy, Jotaro, Saitama, and Senku are the Four Ace Anime Protagonist Emperors!
Merphy: *absolutely fawning over Luffy during the fight scenes* "I love him so much"
Also Merphy: "Well, I guess it is somewhat reasonable that Boa could eventually fall for Luffy"
She's just angry about the competition.
Omg ikr she talks about how much she loves Luffy but when Boa is it's a problem with
She doesn't have a problem with it, she just enjoys the personality of boa before it more, so she was sad with the switch its normal
Boa strength is only shown in the background of this arc and easy to miss how far it is, she doesn't have the information we have
@@a3-radio I don't think she has a problem with it, I just found it funny when she (deservedly) hypes Luffy so much about his actions during the fight with the Boa sisters, and right afterwards is so nonchalant when saying "I guess this is the point Boa fell for him or something".
@@leob636 oh yeah i got that from you comment i was responding to jarvis but i forgot to put his @ xD
I also found it hilarious
Boa is conventionally beautiful, but her people find her beautiful because she is the strongest on the island. Her whole "looking so far down on you that she's looking up" shtick is born from a history of established strength.
Can't say much else that hasn't been said without spoiling things, love the reviews!
Funny enough. Oda has gone on record to say Hancock is one of the hardest characters for him to draw, cause he draws her thinking "beautiful woman"
Luffy’s face when Boa uses her ability is the same he made when Enel’s used his lightning powers on him. It’s the “ohh that didn’t hurt me…. Sorry” face lol
Luffy resists Boa Hancock's powers because he's not attracted to her at all. The vice admiral stabbed himself for the same reason, he needed to feel a pain strong enough to overcome the attraction to Hancock.
No he does like women it’s made specifically clear but he only loves adventures abs good so he doesn’t love zoro or love nami he really likes them but doesn’t love them
@@misterbk1791 sorry, I really don't understand your comment, where you responding to someone else?
It's pure physics, if there's an opening, also known as a hole, the blood will flow out through it instead of gathering... somewhere else.
Oda said that its not like he's not attracted to her, its just that physical beauty isn't normally such an important aspect for Luffy, who cares more about what's inside.
In fact, Oda already explained that the reason Luffy did respond naturally to seeing Nami's naked body in Alabasta (twice) was because when he's near Usopp, he relaxes more which brings out his "naughtier" side ("naughty kid on vacation" was the term Oda used), which is why he does respond to seeing a woman's body in those cases.

Semi-important note: Momonga is *not* an admiral.
There is only a total of three admirals and you've met two of them thus far: Aokiji and Kizaru.
He’s a vice admiral. Probably her confusion.
and if you wanna count him, fleet admiral sengoku
It's a minor inaccuracy really. In real world usually if your full rank has "admiral" in it you are addressed simply as admiral. So calling rear admirals, vice admirals, grand admirals etc as just admiral is not technically incorrect. Same with generals. This of course varies by country and by branch.
Murphy: This arc didn't have enough content and shouldn't be 10 chapters
Also Murphy: 46 min long video
Right? Saying that this video was going to be shorter. Lol.
I'm all for it, personally lol
Can't wait to hit the 1 hour mark!
Be careful Momonga is a vice-admiral, he is one of the man that he was able to resist Hancock's charm. "Boa Hancock: I see... You used the pain to silence your wicked heart. A mark of experience. However, your soldiers are no more. Your crew is down to one.
Momonga: One... Is not the same as "none"." This quote is absolutely perfect
And probably a reference to Luffy's own situation.
The quote is made even better by the fact that we're following only Luffy for the moment.
That's why Momonga is one of my favorite vice admirals together with the guy that got promoted in the post timeskip and garp
To be clear, he only resisted by clouding his mind with pain. He knew how her powers work (through attraction), so he stabbed himself in the hand to distract himself.

Originally, Oda planned on the story of One Piece lasting for a total of 5 years. Now, 20 years later, he is saying he really wants to end the story in 5 years, which we are still kinda skeptical about.
So yeah, we are taking a detour or 5 every now and then. We'll get there when we get there. It's all about the journey afterall^^

Same with every One Piece fan LOL. Oda knows what you want, and he is only going to give it to you when he is good and ready and after he gives you a slew of things that you never even knew you wanted, but really really did.
Is just one more build up that he can do: "lets send this guy away and only talk about him in 50 chapters (1 year in real life time). It feels good when they come back

Boa's people already know that she is strong. She is one of the seven warlords for a reason. Just because she didn't show her strength this arc doesn't mean her people don't already know shes strong. I think the point is that shes very strong AND beautiful which counts as double which is why her people love her so much no matter what she does
Also, boa's people know that she can use conqueror's haki which is a testiment of power in and of itself
One of the things Merphy mentioned before was that she loves that in One Piece's world, everything also happens outside Luffy's adventure. Amazon Lily knows Hancock's strengh, so I don't get why Merphy wants a constant reminder of her power.
@@OsSas3 I wouldn't say she's asking for a constant reminder. Just a demonstration. And who can blame her? We just met the only female warlord, the last one of them. All high and mighty, so cocky, and she's supposedly very strong. Of course we'd want to see her kicking ass.

I think the open-endedness of Hancock's backstory also makes sense from a story perspective, obviously the events were unbelievably traumatic, so she wouldnt go into detail about it, that would just be reliving her trauma.
Also the boa sisters weren't slaves at Sabaody, they were slaves at Mariejois, the home of the Celestial Dragons.
I said the same thing after the last video. I think she thinks only Saobody has slaves and that the celestial dragons are from there.
I think when Luffy had a chance to save the girls,
Luffy was very relieved that he got to save someone after not being able to save anyone just the previous arc. This is also the reason he protected the sisters back during the fight. He wanted to protect as much as possible.
He wanted that confirmation that he is still capable of saving someone.
And that's #508769567883 reason we love Luffy!
subconsiously yeah sure, but he would do it even if he did not lose his friends prior...
I also like to think that the reason why he protected the sister's back is because he remembered how Hachi covered his forehead mark in Sabaody and learns latter that he would suffer prejudice and that's why he was hiding everything about being a fishman. I like to think that he linked these facts since in that moment he was still thinking that it was the same mark.
And that level of compression and kindness made me love Luffy soooo much more than I already did 🥰
The passive-aggressiveness of "but maybe not, maybe we're gonna be doing something else for a while" had me go 🤣🤣🤣.

Merphy: We finally have a short video!
*is 46 minutes long*
One piece still long but not enough 😂😂😂
I guess in travelling from the Tekkingverse to the Murphyverse, you’ve brought his powers with you, Barry D. Brick.

@@DrakusLuthos I like Sawyer7. But man Tek brings back memories. I haven't tuned into him in a while.
Merphy: Soon. The video almost over.

Merphy: "the biggest complaint of this arc is just focusing on luffy, not the crew."
Me looking on the next arcs: 👀
She is not prepared.
Well I think her critique on this arc is reflective of One Piece criticism in general. The vast majority of time, hindsight is king in One Piece. People aren't always enthused, especially early on, when One Piece spends a lot of time setting up future events or reveals, but when the events or reveals happen are fully appreciative of the past insight and foreshadowing.
In this case, (SPOILERS), she isn't aware of the fact that this arc is Luffy-centric because the next saga is purely Luffy-centric, because as much as the Straw Hat crew is amazing together, the scale of the upcoming World War (Marineford) would have no place for them. Luffy alone belongs in that setting due to his relation with Ace and upcoming flashback, nature of survivability, and conquerer's haki. Therefore the short Amazon Lily arc is necessary to set up the beginning of this Luffy-centric saga and also the upcoming training timeskip.
I'm sure Murphy will talk about this next week, but Impel Down is also sort of a squad up moment so that Luffy doesn't have to handle Marineford alone. Not only does it bring a bunch of past antagonists back as allies, but it super expands the world-building of the series, which absolutely would not have worked if the strawhat crew was still together at this point.
During this arc the theme is beauty. The whole island believes that strength is beauty but what I think what Oda is saying through Luffy is that kindness is beauty. So when Luffy sacrifices his desires to save those girls Oda is saying that Luffy is the beautiful one.
I like that.
Regarding the whole "strength is beauty" thing, I think thematically for Boa, it's the exact opposite. Her beauty is literally a power she can use... and she's incredibly dangerous. Proably doesn't fix the issues you have with that whole thing (and I can see why), but I do think the yin-yang parallels with Boa using her "beauty as strength" counter to the mantra of her country is interesting.
SPOILERS
I mean, we see later on in Marineford that even without her devil fruit, Boa is still a very strong fighter. It's just that her Devil Fruit is pretty damn powerful on top of her already pretty formidable strength.
Boa would still be the strongest woman in the Island even if she were hutt ugly
And I mean physically she's easily one of the strongest ppl of this universe, so that still checks out. Merphy will catch glimpses in the future
@@Birthday888 Please... this is a spoiler
Both "Strength is Beauty" and "Beauty in Strength" applies to Hancock. Her having all 3 types of Haki is a testament to her physical strength and her initial bounty of 80 Million is the highest known first-issue bounty in the series.
I agree that it’s interesting that the snake sisters seem to be able to “do something to cut through Luffy’s devil fruit powers” as you put it.
It’s especially interesting when you see that almost the exact same thing happened about a hundred chapters ago when Garp shows up in the post Ennis Lobby arc.
It was played for comedy at the time but if you go back and reread the end of chapter 431 it’ll probably feel very familiar.
Garp: hits Luffy
Luffy: Ow! That hurts!
Sanji: It hurts? What do you mean?! He only punched you! That shouldn’t work on rubber!
A few interesting non spoilers points you might find interesting.
It took me until this arc to realize the warlords have an animal theme
Mihawk->Hawk
Crocodile-> Crocodile
Kuma (paw paw) -> Bear (Kuma is bear in Japanese)
Boa -> boa constrictor
Moria -> bat
Guy with pink frills -> flamingo (I don't remember if you've heard his name yet so I'm leaving it blank)
Ect.
Also the celestial dragons don't live on the not-island we just came from, they live on the red line, a strip of mountains going around the planet's prime maridian.
And finally, this is the arc where most people consider Luffy to be cononicaly Ace (asexual)
Little addition: celestial dragons are known to come down to sabody archipelago to buy slaves and be terrible people in general
Okay I am just mad that he couldn't remember Doflamingo's name. Lol he's only the most eminent one aside from Dracula Mihawk.
@@omarcook3663 Read it again, they didn't use the name because they don't know if Merphy heard it yet

@@arenkai she defiantly has, they been introduced Doflomingo past this point
Your point about the "strength is beauty" mantra is something I agreed with for a long time, but on a reread of the arc a few years ago, a thought occurred. If strength is beauty, if strength and beauty ARE THE SAME THINGS, then beauty must be strength. Boa's devil fruit, as I understand it, requires her targets to be enamored with her on some level to be affected, and, as such, her beauty and her ability to be disarming IS her strength, and so I think the fact that Boa is beautiful enough to get away with anything works. Her power makes her the most dominant force on the island, but her beauty is what leaves her subjects helpless to resist said power.
All of that said I agree with the analysis of another commenter, I think that Luffy's act of kindness breaking Boa's walls makes it clear that beauty is kindness and not strength. A thought which I think is echoed through the series. It's clear that not all pirates are benevolent. We see that as early as with Alvida and Buggy, but the Strawhats are, almost unfalteringly, kind, and that's part of why we love them.
This is some dope insight thanks!
@@willtimme3411 I'm happy you enjoyed it :)
Strength = beauty. Hancock is the strongest on the island, so she is the most beautiful. Also, she's the most beautiful in the normal sense too. So she's double most beautiful haha
It's interesting to see a motif of rebranding oneself reappear in the story. Originally, we saw Nami rebranding her Arlong Pirate tattoo, but it's interesting to see that the very same thing happened to the fishmen. Both suffered lives of pain and rebranded themselves to forget the past. As always, loving the reviews!
It’s also interesting that with slaves in that world there seem to be 3 outcomes.
Some let their hate and mistrust go wild and hurt people unrelated to their issues. Many Fishmen did that and even Nami for a while let out her anger of her situation on the crew.
Then some give up on freedom all together and come to the conclusion that death is preferable to slavery. We’ve seen 2 slaves of the Dragons commit suicide due to that.
And the last option. Once you are free, you accept that what happened is a part of you and focus on becoming someone new (rebranding). Nami did it. The Sun pirates did it. And the gorgon sisters will do it after AmazonLily.
There's also the strong and constant theme of choosing your family, which is often shown as a way to escape an abusive system. Really the whole story is about freedom from tyranny in all its forms, strong and just leadership that depends on those it leads to survive, and comradery and fun.
Just like how the Sun Pirates covered up their slave brand with their new sun mark, Nami did the same thing with the Arlong Pirates "brand". Just thought that was interesting
I just realized this omg 😳
it's ironic that nami basically did the same thing as the fishman pirates
@@detaaditya6237 narrative symmetry
imo one the reasons for the Luffy focus and minimal Straw hats interaction is so you can relate and share in his distress over losing his crew, and it seems to be working on you :)
Shhhh
Just wanted to clarify that the celestial dragons and their slaves live on top of the red line in "The Holy Land". The reason you find them on "not island" (Sabaody Archiipelago) is because it's a very close destination when they descend from their homes. I think you get to see that part of the map when they are arriving at impel down
Luffys "brainstorming" moments in this arc are brilliant.
Actually Usopp was never really afraid of bugs. If you recall in Jaya when they were hunting for the bird, a bunch of small bugs fell down and Usopp was fine though it freaked out Nami. It is when they are giant bugs, he is terrorized but that is typical of most any giant wild creature to Usopp.
Of course for me, I felt each Strawhat was sent to the place most beneficial to their growth rather than most terrible for them. JMO.

Luffy's emotional intelligence is not talked about enough. Yeah the guy fools around and doesn't understand what's going on most of the time, but when it comes down to it he knows what makes people tick. He knows what they need to set themselves free. He knows if someone is redeemable or not. He is a great judge of character. He just intrinsically understands the very core of people which is why most people he meets end up becoming his allies.
Underrated comment.
About the Beauty-Strength consistency thing.
I believe the mantra " Strength is Beauty" thing is what The Amazonian believes in and so does Boa Hancock, but she Also believes in another mantra with it called " Beauty is Strength" and she has rolled 20 on charisma so she makes other bend their logic to match with hers.

But... 20 is great on a 20 scale Oo
@@rafaelmonte4263 yeah, it's awesome, I just wanted to point the D&D ref :p
Boa has the love-love fruit so the love people feel for her is a by-product of her fruit and isn't "real". So the fact that people forgive her for her beauty is also a part of that. However the fact that Luffy isn't affected by her fruit since he doesn't see her as attractive (her fruit only works if a person finds her attractive) means that he is the only person who's feelings towards her are genuine and not affected by her fruit. Thus her falling in love with Luffy because he's the only person that sees her as she is I think was a brilliant move on Oda's part.
16:15 "[she] decides to tell him her BACKstory" hey i thought you hated puns!
Lmao
Boa Hancock is the strongest woman in the island, so therefore the most beautiful one
Boa’s powers works by turning anyone who is attracted to her into stone, the reason it doesn’t work isn’t because of luffy’s Haki but because he isn’t physically attracted to her at all.

@@synaesthesia888 so what exactly did Oda say? Cause the only time we see him react to a woman’s body is with Nami, and I remember Oda saying he only acted that way because he was easily influenced by the other men around
This arc is the start of Oda reminding us that One Piece’s main character and whose story we follow is Luffy, first and foremost. We’re lucky he’s the best character at least
The phrase “strength is beauty” literally means “strength and beauty are the same thing”, so strong people are beauty, and beautiful people are strong. Boa’s people love her because she is beautiful, which means, according to their mantra, she is strong.
But she is also strong
That and she is literally strong enough to be a Warlord of the Sea, she is both strong AND beautiful.
Oh well yeah, that too, I'm just playing devil's advocate for the complaints about the strong female character who happens to also be conventionally beautiful
Adding onto what other people have already mentioned, regarding Boa's power and the island's mantra, I would say that the people of her island should be familiar with how strong Boa is. Her ability is strong because she is perceived as beautiful. Not because she is beautiful strictly, but because she's the strongest at wooing people. She's skilled at manipulation, at seduction, at pure charisma. Her power works when other people are enraptured by her, and since she uses it successfully on anyone she pleases, including the women she turned into stone that made Luffy get angry with her, it's clearly more than just based on male sexual attraction. Her talent at beauty and charisma woos everyone, and that is her power. She'd be powerful even without the devil fruit with this level of talent at making people fall for her, the devil fruit just gives her talent a physical form. It also ties into her backstory and hatred for men and the established order, as her ability is malicious towards those that harbor impure thoughts towards her. It's vindication for whoever would've wanted to take advantage of her before, it turns their desires against them. Some have speculated that Luffy is asexual and I'm on the fence for this interpretation, but more than that, Luffy dislikes authority, and has no weakness to charisma. His only affectionate feelings towards others are feelings of respect and loyalty, not blind admiration. He puts no one on a pedestal, obviously, since he wants to be king of the pirates himself.
The women on the island know that she's a very powerful warlord and that they can only live their because the Kuja pirate are so strong, so I don't think it's very necessary for her to perform physical feats in front of them, even though she easily could. Everyone knows that she's strong. But beyond that, you said that she didn't lift a finger in front of her people to demonstrate her strength, but technically, she did turn those women to stone in front of everyone, which is her primary source of physical power.
Luffy not bowing to her authority is a nice subtle way of showing why he has conquerors haki. Also when when they first meet and Luffy tries asking for a ship like they're on the same level in that situation.
Also she will have physical feats of power but no spoilers for her
Very good an interesting comment i wish more people see it
The best part of this arc to me was when luffy covered up Sandersonia's back. In the middle of a life and death fight he still thought about what the right thing to do would be. Sure he was in that fight because of them but it didnt mean that he had to be heartless towards them. I loved luffy's response when one of them asked him what he was doing. He simply said well you guys don't want people to see this right? Yeah you're trying to kill me but even so this thing on your back doesnt have anything to do with it. It showed them what kind of person he really was with one act of kindness alone
LOVE the review! ("too long" is NEVER a problem, lol)
Regarding the way the population of Amazon Lily works, I always interpreted the "women leave and come back with a baby girl" to mean that they came back bearing girls who were orphans or kidnapped (they are pirates, after all), rather than that they were gone long enough to get pregnant and have a child that is somehow always a girl. This could also explain the huge diversity of looks in the population, such as Aphelandra who seems to be much taller than any of the others.
I also completely understand your issue with the relationship between Boa and the citizens of the island. It isn't something I ever noticed before, but I think you make some really good points.
I like that idea! I always thought that it was the former and if it was a boy, they'd give him away or leave him for dead/kill him
honestly i assumed they got pregnant and if it was a girl theyd brig it along, if a boy they'd leave it to be raised by the father
I like that idea, it's probably both tbh. With the general idea being "Leave and come back with a little girl."
Wow, I never thought of this but you might just be right, that's brilliant!
I mean none of them look different to each other boa Hancock has two literal sisters and the previous empress left the island for a long time specifically when she was in love and she makes it clear every empress was in love at one point it’s clear they got pregnant

I love One Piece particularly because of Oda's ability to make us empathize through his story-telling. It was fascinating to see this as a cultural anthropology student when I re-read and re-watched the story so far. After all the (recent) fucked up past of the discipline, the first and recurrently emphasized thing that we were taught was that we, as professionals, must be empathic, because empathy means to be able to see and understands actions, motives, beliefs - people ultimately - through their perspective and not our own. Therefore empathy does not really imply agreeing (or disagreeing), but understanding. Of course, absolute objectivity is not all that possible, but you can get out of your shoes for some time and see from a different lens and understand how minds work and actions take place, and that is something that Oda shows beautifully with his world and characters.
Beautifully put. Too bad empathy is taken advantage of to push narratives in today’s world. People think with their feelings.
I literally can’t take this anticipation. Gonna go to sleep for a couple weeks waiting for the next few videos.

15:42 I think the best part of him bowing down his head is that it is something he learned in Alabasta. When he and vivi bowed down for nami when she was sick and asked for a doctor. And when the king of Alabasta bowed to him to thank them. He learned from that and realized a good leader knows when to bow for help and thanks
Luffy does respond to seeing a woman's naked body. Particularly Nami's. He did so twice during Alabasta, first when Bonclay transformed into her, and then in the castle bath house.
Oda explained in an SBS long ago that its not like Luffy isn't interested in those things, its just that he's normally so pure and single-minded that his brain tends to ignore things that he doesn't automatically correlate with "adventure" or "food". According to Oda, the reason he responded to seeing Nami's body was because Usopp was there. Since they're the same age, Luffy relaxes and goes into "naughty kid in vacation" mode (Oda's words), so he responds naturally to those things, like any other "healthy young man" (again, Oda's words).
Didn't oda say luffy was just imitating usopp? Just to play along with everyone
But he also mentions that he does find Boa attractive. Therefore, she didn't affect him not because he doesn't feel sexual attraction, but because he has no time for that.
Luffy isn't straight, gay, pan, or ace. Luffy is adventure-sexual.
I just read that sbs and it doesn’t seem like Oda is implying that “usopp allows him to react naturally.” More so, Usopp brings out the naughty side of luffy and his natural reaction is his reaction to Boa.
Also, I’d like to point out that Copper also reacts to both Nami and Bon Clay, but now its pretty clear that he is only attracted to reindeer.
in what SBS did you read that?

She is the new Tekking.
Nah she is her own

well i can say it was hilarious ridiculous and fabulous at the same time lmaooo
We gotta talk about the kintama
I think one of the best parts of Luffy bowing his head here and any other time, is it’s all bc of Vivi for yelling at him back on Drum Island for always trying to get his way through brute force. So it really shows that he’s learned that he can humble himself to achieve his goal too
I am so glad that you also like their dynamic with each other. Some of my favorite fight scenes were the ones where they all fight together to beat one strong enemy, like the Straw Hats vs Oars in Thriller Bark, and Straw Hats vs Pacifista on Sabaody.
Granted I like the other fight scenes too but its just more exciting for me seeing them all work together against one enemy.
Her name is Boa Hancock, and her sisters are Boa Sandersonia (the skinny tall one) and Boa Marigold (the short one). Boa is the family name, Hancock is her name.
