Forty years ago, Transformers began doing crossovers by having Spider-Man team up with them in an October, 1984 issue of the Transformers comic. So this week I take a look at as many Transformers crossovers as I can and rank them. Angry Birds, Terminator, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Friday the 13th, and many more. Let me know what your favorite is.

Jokingly, I think ROM vs Transformers and Mars Attacks Transformers should be higher tiers- but only because I colored them lol. This list was great! I love Transformers and I really love how much it's crossed over with other properties. Nothing's going to top how excited I was seeing Spider-Man in the Marvel run of Transformers as a kid. Party Wallop might be the crossover I wanted most, though. What a fun toy!
Hey Chris! MASSIVE mecha fan and expert on DynamicPro robots here, Mazinger Z vs Transformers DOES in fact do everything one would want as a fan of both franchises. It's a fantastic tribute to both series and as short as it is, it's a fantastic romp full of the kind of heavy stylized action beats you'd want from a classic DynamicPro mecha manga. Optimus Prime riding Mazinger's scrander like a flying surfboard, Mazinger grappling with Devastator, the infamous fan favourite Mazinscream... and who could forget the true heroes, Boss Borot and Grimlock? All great! Us in the mecha community love this manga, it's a certified classic.
And yes, Mazinger was the first in what we'd come to understand as the fully formed Mecha Genre, though some giant robots do predate him, like Tetsujin-28 (Gigantor). Mazinger was the first to codify all the tropes though, so it's generally recognized as the true start. Another Nagai co-creation, Getter Robo, was the first combining robot as well, another direct thruline to the concept of transforming robots.

Great episode on Transformers franchise. Also kudos for acknowledging Go Nagai's Mazinger Z, the first piloted Mecha that started the trend that lead towards Gundam, Macross, and Evangelion.

Very fun episode, really like the idea of talking about a potpourri of misc information about a character or franchise and using the tier list as a way to present everything. Need a tier list of best comic characters that have paste themed abilities.
You forgot Universal Monsters (Dracula and Frankenstein), Knight Rider, Top Gun, X-Men, Jurassic Park, Street Fighter II, Stranger Things, Monster Hunter, Naruto, Tonka and Hot Wheels

And on the Japanese side, there's been crossover figures with Snoopy, Hello Kitty, Evangelion, and even Disney (Mickey, Donald, & Buzz Lightyear). There's probably a ton I'm forgetting, that's just what I remember off the top of my head.

Deaths Head was originally from Transformer UK.
Created for transformers UK, but technically debuted elsewhere so that Marvel would own him… and they’ve done nothing with him omaob

I own a random 90s issue from the run about a weird post apocalyptic future where some villain controlling the original Death Head’s body has destroyed most of the world and all that’s left is Death’s Head II doing some time travel shenanigans and also there’s a ragtag group of Avengers including a face turned Rhino
@@Cdr2002 That was the original Death's Head II miniseries. One of those ironic twists where AIM created the Minion android to save them from a predicted doom but the act of creating Minion set the events in place for their destruction, and Death's Head's personality overrode Minion's programming by the end of the story.

There's a very slight crossover in Transformers #3. One of the Marvel cameos in the issue is Nick Fury and Dum-Dum Duggan discussing what needs to be done and refer obliquely to the Godzilla comic where Dum-dum chased him across America.
Mazinger Z vs Transformers was a nice story, very simple, but nice.
IMO they should have had Optimus "die" in the story and being rebuilt as "Majin Optimus", an Optimus Prime with the power and weapons of Mazinger Z.

Marvel UKs Action Force comic had a Transformers cross over event story too, featuring
Wild Bill flying the Protector-Bot helicopter (Blades?), & Mualer tanks facing off against Megatron in the Docklands area of London etc.
And cameo by Richard Branson of all people!

I liked it, but it is not among my favorites. That said, Pinky Pie vs. Shockwave was a disappointment. A logical character versus a cartoon like one should have been funnier.

I'm surprised on the Death's Head comment - I would say it's more the other way around. He's a TF character who was spun out of TF into the Marvel Universe(s) proper.
His first official appearance was to be in Wanted: Galvatron, Dead or Alive! in Transformers which you took the stills from, and his creators were Simon Furman and Geoff Senior. They liked the character so much and didn't want it being owned by Hasbro - so they retroactively put a one-page backup strip called High Noon Tex with him in, so it'd be a Marvel character instead. Then at the end of Legacy of Unicron he got zapped out of the TF Universe, encountered Doctor Who, who shrank him down before dumping him on Earth in 8162 for Dragon's Claws, and then over to his own 10 issue series.
Side note, but if anyone didn't like the way he went out in the Death's Head 2 comic, I would strongly recommend reading the What If Death's Head Lived? Issue by the original creators. A much better sense of closure for the character. The runs by other creators after this unfortunately didn't capture the character - it needs the sardonic black humour that Furman injected in the character, rather than just sticking "yes?" at the end of every sentence.

There were some Disney and Star Wars Transformers. I have some of the Star Wars ones ,including the Darth Vader/Death Star one, with his cape.
The episode with Cobra Commander in Transformerms is one of my favorites on season 3.
They did a whole line of toys where they were Marvel Transformers, like Spider-Man that turned into a motorbike. Some of those toys were cool, although it doesn't have the same fun Factor as the characters from Star Wars turning into Star Wars vehicles, if that makes sense.
Also fun fact they literally just revealed that they're bringing back the Star Wars Transformers, with a new one based on the Mandalorian

For serious, I'm a huge fan of the Transformers/Joe crossovers myself. I got to meet Mike Miller, who worked on art for G.I. Joe vs. The Transformers - he was pleasantly surprised when I asked him for a signature on my copy of the trade version the first time I met him at a con. Wasn't a book he was used to seeing touted by fans of his work. I ended up getting the other collections from the series signed by him at a later con, and he recognized me then, and at a third con as well.
There's an AMAZING cover from the Transformers Vs Avengers book that has Spidey on Megatrons finger tip. As if we would look at a little bug crawling on our hands. It reminds me of Megatrons "Human Insects" line. It really is great enough to deserve a huge poster

Also, Death's Head did not necessarily cross over with Transformers, It was specifically created for Transformers UK then spun off into it's own thing.
But be that as it may, Death’s Head is 100% a marvel character now so it counts as a retroactive crossover just like the Transformers Spiderman crossover in issue 3.
If I recall correctly he was first introduced in their Dr Who monthly magazine to make sure Marvel held unto the character rights.
He was created specifically to spin-off into his own title. That’s why he debuted in a back-up strip in a bunch of Marvel UK magazines

He was created specifically for the Marvel UK Transformers comic, but due to the deal Marvel had with Hasbro at the time, any characters introduced in the Transformers comic legally became the property of Hasbro; so Simon Furman wrote a single page story introducing the character, which was printed in other Marvel UK titles prior to his appearance in Transformers, and that way Marvel retained the rights to the character.
After Death's Head was sent through time in a later TF story, he encountered Dr. Who, whereupon he was shrunk to human size before being sent to the 82nd century to encounter, and have his original.body destroyed by Dragon's Claws. Once he was rebuilt into the blue, more anatomical version in his first title, he started jumping through time again, and that's when he started interacting with Marvel Universe characters like the Fantastic Four and Iron Man 2020.
I was surprised that even through you mentioned IDW, you didn't go into the Hasbro Comic Book Universe (HCBU) / Hasbro Reconstruction comic book lines. Honestly, I don't think it would have landed very high on the tier list, but it had some very interesting concepts and moments such as: M.A.S.K. technology coming from reverse engineering transformers; Transformers being vulnerable to the Visionaries' magic and one of the Darkling Lords murdering Kup; Micronauts' and ROM's connection to the Transformers, Action man working with Kup before Kup was murdered; and of course G.I. Joe. I think that would be a great stand alone video, going over what went right, what went wrong and the BTS stuff like licensing and choosing not to include Hasbro properties like D&D, Stretch Armstong, Go-Bots, My Little Pony and Jem.
I always loved the Spider-Man cross over, it blew my mind as a kid that something like that was even possible.
I still play the shit out of Angry Birds Transformers.
Fun! I'm not much of a Transformers fan, but always enjoy a tier list. Perhaps it seems the low hanging fruit for videos, but I'd be down to see more if it was a light lift for you when a deep dive Comic Tropes video isn't possible.

Yep. He first appeared in Marvel UK's Transformers comic, but his creators liked him so much that they quickly did a one-page Death's Head strip that appeared in all Marvel UK titles so that Hasbro wouldn't be able to claim copyright on the character. He then appeared in a Doctor Who comic where the Doctor shrank Death's Head to human size (he was previously the same size as Optimus Prime) and sent him on a journey through time, resulting in the character next appearing in Marvel UK's Dragon's Claws comic before getting his own title.

OMG! Transformers and G.I.Joe were way ahead of the curve both in Old Snake before Metal Gear Solid 4 and "Old Man [name]" that Marvel (and DC to some extent) love so much in the last decade.
My fave was when Venkman psychologically reads and dissects Starscream - he reads him like a book, a book Megatron should crack sometime.

Best bit of the Ghostbusters/TF crossover is the genuinely rad Ectotron collab toy (a heavily retooled Hot Spot/Onslaught from the Combiner Wars line)

Joining the chorus of people pointing out that Death's Head was a character who originated in Marvel UK's comic (rather than "crossing over' with TF). Also, there kinda sorta was a Transformers/Ghostbusters crossover waaay back in 1989. Pretty obscure, but in Marvel UK's Transformers comic, there was a 4-part story called "Race with the Devil" and the Ghostbusters appeared in a few panels. It seemed to be an in-joke by artist Andy Wildman, who drew that story as well as stories in Marvel UK's "The Real Ghostbusters" comic. (OK, so more "background cameo" than "crossover" per se.)

The Japan-only video game Dream Mix TV was basically a clone of Super Smash Bros. with characters from Takara, Konami, and Hudson. The characters in it most known to English speakers would probably be Optimus Prime, Megatron, Tyson from Beyblade, Simon Belmont, Solid Snake, Bomberman, and Yugo from Bloody Roar.
Transformers has also had a ton of toy-only crossovers; just to name a few, the entire main Animorphs toyline was Transformers-branded, there was also a whole line of Star Wars Transformers, there's a Donald Duck that has Bumblebee features and turns into Herbie, and more recent collaborations have included Stranger Things, Knight Rider, Naruto, Zoids, and Monster Hunter.
Transformers crossovers are so wild that TF Wiki includes the sentence "Evangelion Unit 01 is a retool of Hello Kitty".
He forgot two: "Furby's" who were Soundwave's minions spying on humans in the first "Transformers" live-action movie. And also "Twilight", where Jacob is quite obviously a reference to the 1999 "Animorphs: Transformers".

I highly recommend more people check out that Mazinger Z/ Transformers manga. That artists name is Tsushima Naoto. He's not only a hardcore mecha fan, he is still drawing to this day! He loves Manga/Movies and American Comic books! He was also the guest artist for a Bot-Con Comic, illustrating rampage and transmutes first encounter back in their cybertronian / pre-beastwars days! It's an action horror, considering rampage was quite murderous...but an excellent botcon comic! His work is always enthusiastic and energetic!!! I recommend you all check out his work online!💪❤️
My favorite thing about the Ghostbusters crossover is that unlike every other crossover with Ghostbusters which involved the multiverse Transformers just exist in the Ghostbusters world.
My daughters loved the MLP crossovers book. With that said, I just thought they were okay. With that said, I have a Beast Machines Transformer called Battle Unicorn, who transforms into guess what, an unicorn. So they would play with him with their ponies. Sort of fun. They made up a back story where he crashed on Equestria and scanned and only thing that would closely match was an Unicorn.
The new Rathalos Prime action figure coming out next year looks awesome. I haven’t bought and TF toys since I was a kid, and I’m not a MonHun fan, but that figure is so cool I preordered it LOL

Fun seeing ROB in the lineup. My grandfather had a bunch of their comics , but I rarely ever see people talking about them.
I think the original idea with the first Transformers Spider-man comic was that Transformers could be in the Marvel Universe. They had done that with their Toy Licenses before, like Micronauts (and ROM the space knight I think). Then they realized that was a stupid idea.
I was a fan of the Visionaries in the 1980's. I watched the thirteen episodes when they aired, and I owned one of the figures. It has an interesting backstory of a high-tech planet where magic returns and reduces society to feudalism. But they never did anything with it and from what I understand the toy line did not sell. It faced a lot of competition from other toys with holograms, and more popular toy lines like Thundercats or Hasbro's popular lines, Transformers and G.I. Joe.
As for the crossover, it was during IDW's shared universe of Hasbro properties. It tried to reinvent the Visionaries, taking away a lot of the retro charm of the original toys and show. It didn't sell well, and IDW rebooted the Transformers comics while quietly getting rid of the other Hasbro properties in the shared universe. Then IDW lost the Hasbro licenses.
There are Transformers, GIJoe, and Power Rangers role playing games. They all are from the same publisher and using the same base system, so released a book for when you want to run crossover stories. Being a role playing game, people can tell the stories they want.
I remember some other crossover in the IDW comics, with a big Hasbro crossover with ROM and GI Joe and maybe some others. M.A.S.K. was there as well. Introduced themselves as "Muh-muh-muh Mask! It stands for Mobile Armored Strike .. wait for it .. Kommand!"

Growing up TMNT, transformers, and Power Rangers were what my mom would tell family "get him anything related to those and he'll love it" I've got the TMNT×Power Rangers, I need to get the Transformer party wagon now. It's baffling there hasn't been a PR×Transformers anything as far as I know.

You did forget the G.I. Joe crossover set in a pseudo-WWII, with Cobra in place of the German army. Dark, murky artwork, but still worth a mention.
I liked the Transformers Terminator crossover
I wouldn't mind seeing GI Joe having more crossovers with other properties. There's lots of potential. Since GI Joe has such a character roster you could take small groups of characters and place them in different situations. Imagine Storm Shadow fighting a Predator. Or a Terminator taking out a squad of Cobras. Or Snake-Eyes duking it out with Batman. Cobra could be messing with time and accidentally bring back Sgt Rock or Col Fury. Lots of places to go.

Some toy history. After the amazing G I Joe toys success, Hasbro went to japan to find their new big win. Thats how they ended buying the Diaclone license from Takara.

Even _this_ early, that Party Wallop TMNT Transformer has a third-party Metalhead upgrade kit for the figure released by Nonnef Productions. (I'm honestly not trying to promote it, I just thought it was interesting & maybe worth bringing up.)
Very cool episode! I think Transformers / Avengers and Transformers / Thundercats would have made very good crossovers.

I loved the Transformers /GiIJOE crossover by Tom Scoili, not only is bonkers with a SIlver Age type vibe to it, but I pretty much got to see all of my favorite Autobots and Joes. I also have a sentimental attachment to the first GIJOE/Transformers crossover from Marvel and the stuff Image/Devil's Due did as well. I loved The New Avengers/Transformers crossover. I want see a crossover with The Transformers/GIJOE/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Voltron/Thundecats/Masters of The Universe/Ghostbusters/DC/marvel/The various Proto-superheroes from before Superman's first appearance/StarWars/Star Trek/Astro City/Flintstones/Jetsons. If we could get that one massive crossover I really want, I'd die happy.

A Transformers/TMNT comic would be great! And..a lot of these books are out of print, for some reason. I can't find some of them anyplace.
IDW made most of them and don’t have the license anymore. Makes for some fun back issue hunting!
If you counted the Bumblebee cosplay in TMNT: Out of the Shadows.
When IDW had the license, they were able to reprint past Transformers material from Marvel and Dreamwave. I'm hoping that Image's current license would similarly allow them to reprint previous works, including IDW, but I don't know for sure if they have those rights. And I imagine their new material is a much higher priority for them.

In the X-files crossover, it was part of a mini-series where the Gunmen crossed over with the TMNT and the Crow and didn't the Turtles and the Transformers meetup the final episode?
