- Based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft. This story revolves around a student of metaphysics, Charles Dexter Ward who befriends Erich Zann an aging violinist who lives on the floor above him. Charles is fascinated and then drawn to Zann's sinister yet wonderful music that he hears late at night drifting down from above. He, of course, discovers more then he bargains for when he peers at what beckons beyond that strange curtained window in Zann's room.

I love the original story by Lovecraft! And I've enjoyed very much this short movie!!!!
The best Lovecraft adaptation to date! It's also my personal favorite Lovecraft story, it's so ahead of its time
That 2001 Space Odissey vibe, fucking love it.
This brought life to the story that I just finished reading moments ago; thank you for making this available.🐙
Same here!
Yeah, I feel you. ^^
The creepy imagery and music starting at 13:20 is VERY effective.....!
Feels like an episode of "The Twilight Zone".
A very good adaptation. I don't quite like when they roll into one under a single title several HPL's stories. Mix wine, vodka and beer and call it "a creative cocktail"?And thanks for the subtitles in Russian. Russians got an oppotrunity to read HPL 50 years after his departure and a quarter of a century later that the non-Communist world. Even in Moscow, I suppose, very few people know who was HPL and a minority of those understand English. Damned utilitarian approach to foreign languages study - just for professional purposes of mutually beneficial dealings with foreigners.
"How do you do, sir? My name is Charles Dexter Ward."
NICE.
Merci beaucoup!
getting really close to the original tale, sweet. : )
Obrigada
Esse conto é fantástico
Very good adaptation! I really enjoyed it.
I love how they used Charles Dexter Ward in here even though the protagonist of the original story is unnamed.
But could be hardly him, Charles was a science student.
Creativity knows know bounds whether physical or spiritual or metaphysical. Old academics used to has so many disciplines. @@Daniel.W.Bridge
@@jeremysagan7895 Absolutely not. Creativity knows no limits, rather it sees the different connections between different disciplines. I was referring to the fact that in Lovecraft's world, Ward is a student of science and antiquity, whereas the protagonist of this one is a student of metaphysics. Obviously there is poetic license to name one after the other.
nailed it.
C'est magnifique
La mejor adaptación a este clásico
Looks pretty great, good adaptation!
A encounter with Azathoth
История не полная. Автор оставил важные аспекты за кадром.
Not bad at all!
One gripe I have with this adaptation is that Erich Zann seems to be playing a violin, not a viol.
That seems to be the case in every adaptation for some reason.
@@TheLeniverse Yupp, it is indeed. Bothers me too. I think it's because people are more familiar with the violin, and it's more popular.
I mean, they probably couldn't get their hands on a viol. I'm guessing they didn't exactly have a huge budget for this.
Not a bad adaption. Very faithful to the text. However, the original story didn't have the nude woman dancing. I think Lovecraft would be appalled at that.
I see the nude woman as a seduction attempting to draw Dexter to the window.
😏
I don't think the main character is Charles Dexter Ward. I could be wrong though.
In the original story the main character's name is unknown, indeed, so there was no need to give him the name of Charles Dexter Ward in the movie, imho. But, apart from this, it's a great adaptation.
Agreed. Naming him Charles Dexter Ward only served as a distraction to an otherwise good adaptation.
@@jamiebraswell5520 If I might respectfully disagree: In the original story, there is no dialogue - the unnamed protagonist merely mentions in passing that he introduces himself to Zann so that he might ask to watch him play. But films usually include dialogue, especially in scenes of introduction where we exchange names - so they had to name the character something. The choice of Charles Dexter Ward was just a wink to the audience, homage to Lovecraft's world. It could just as easily have been Randolph Carter, Henry Armitage, or Robert Blake.
Sadly, the atmosphere of the story is lost. It is not a problem that the main character's name is taken from The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (as unnecessary as this may be) but Alexander was the wrong choice for Erich Zann as he cannot act and cannot (pretend to) play violin (another unnecessary alteration, it should have been a viol). The director himself had good moments, but failed miserably with Erich Zann (the man would never have smiled) and especially with the dancing lady. That killed the attempt altogether. Oh, well, still waiting for a decent Lovecraft movie...
But the name of the student is never told in this tale. You think he is C.D. Ward?
