    Friendly advice.
    Instead of using 400gr for scuffing the whole wheel, just buy a some red scotch brite pads. This will do the same thing and is a lot easier to work with and will take a fraction of the time to do.
    Spraying silvers are tricky because with all the metallic, if paint or clear coat is laid on too heavy in one spot you can get "pooling" of the metallic flakes.
    Spray, medium wet coats, not heavy or wet wet coats of the silver.
    In between coats, when paint is dry, use a tack cloth to pick up the access silver or metallic flakes that have dried on top of paint.
    When spraying the clear. First coat spray a fog/light coat of clear. Doing this will lesson the chance of getting runs in your clear coat. Also try and keep the same distance when spraying.
    With that being said, this is great for those who really don't have the equipment and professional supplies.
    Have a great day!

    Very nice. You could always wetsand those runs with 1500 grit sandpaper and then use some compound to buff the shine back.

    Looks good! It’s been a few years since I have painted wheels, using the same process. With the runs, now that the wheel is dry, you can sand them out with 1000-1500grit and polish it out if it bothers you.

    Excellent video - thanks for making it! You inspired me to paint my 951 wheels and they turned out beautifully! Used the same paint and clear coat that you did. I took my tires off before painting them. I was able to do all 4 wheels and center caps with a single can of silver and a single can of clear.

    Sand prior to masking otherwise you need to re-mask. There will be dust on top of all that plastic inside the wheel.

    Great video, to those who thinking about value of time to some projects like this, it is about how you enjoy the whole process, if you enjoyed your time is worth it, if you are not enjoyed what you are doing, even you earn $1000 dollars per hour, but you hate it, then you decide what to do with your time.

    Just bought a 2010 GTS with same wheels and color combo a couple of weeks ago...and wouldn’t you know it, curbed one of the wheels yesterday. Was pissed at myself but luckily, that wheel already had another imperfection on it. Like you bought another silver paint thinking it would match, no luck. Just ordered the Wurth paint and will be doing it properly this weekend.

    Looks good. Only thing I'd do different was to paint the inner parts of the wheel then spray the perimeter. The runs shouldn't bother you. After brake dust and a few other road defects it won't matter. Again great video. Thank-you.

    Great video!! From what, 3-5 feet away you can’t really even see the runs? Pretty cost effective and you get that quality one on one time with your vehicle. The most important ingredient when doing a DIY like this is patience, of which I unfortunately have very little. Great work!

    Great vid, very clear on the process. How does this hold up over time? Curious to know what they look like in 2-3 years. If I wanted to take my bright silver wheels and darken them to a smoky gray, would you recommend this painting method or taking them somewhere and having them powder coated?

    • @waterboy1628

    man i don't know if i got a bad batch or wurth silver wheel paint or what, but my results were terrible and i prepped perfectly. the paint barfed out of the rattle cans spitting specs of bright silver here and there but mostly a nasty dark gray paint color. and i shook those can like a madman beforehand. i am so disappointed. i prepped my wheels for days and all i got was the worst imaginable results

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  6 лет назад +2

      Sorry to hear that. The prep is almost all of the work. Did you buy more than 1 can? Sounds like the paint wasn't mixing properly.

    • @megaman4201
      @megaman4201 3 года назад

      Did you hear the ball rattling inside? Definitely sounds like it wasn't mixing or the can was extremely old so the pigment and metallics settle hard on the bottom and don't mix with all the solvent.

  • @jdstarek
    @jdstarek 6 лет назад +14

    5 hours per wheel. Decent results. Cost of materials is what...$40/wheel? ($160 total).
    It would cost about $150/wheel ($600 total) to have it professionally done.
    Not sure how valuable your time is, but I’d rather spend the extra $450 to save 20 hours of difficult work (which might yield questionable results).
    That said, great vid and tutorial. If I was 20 again, and working on my Acura Integra (which I did every weekend) I’d be all over this.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  6 лет назад +2

      +jason starek I would not paint all 4 wheels. That would take too long to do it right. That said, I've never been quoted $600 to have my wheels painted. Removing the tires and mounting them back on using Road Force balancing is $100 or so already. I paid $950 to have my 997 wheels powder coated. Single color would have been $800. Also, if you don't care about using this special paint, Duplicolor is much cheaper per can. But yeah, it was a lot of work.

    Ahhh ya know it looks like total garbage but looks fine to me....🙄 Ummmm howbout u wet sand it and paint it again one more coat. How hard would that have been? And u need to remove the tape BEFORE the paint dries otherwise u risk it flaking off and peeling part of the rim finish off with it. Not to mention u will want to RE-USE ur tape on another wheel!

    • @megaman4201
      @megaman4201 3 года назад

      No, you are not going to reuse the tape on other wheels.
      No, there is not much risk of paint peeling when removing tape as spray cans are far less material than if it was painted with a spray gun... Would highly doubt there is any "bridging" of the paint.

      No, it's not necessarily a bad habit to mask first. Sanding dust is very fine, that's not what you see stuck in the paint when you're done. Also, spray cans are VERY low pressure so it's not going to blow surrounding dust all over the place. You just need more care in cleaning and blowing the dust away when masking first. When I do my Cayenne wheels, I will be masking first... But I do have 30 years collision and refinish experience.
