robert trottier I agree! I just found him a couple days ago on RUclips. It's difficult for an educated person to explain things to people like us ☺️ Let's just say we're educated in different areas but not heart health. I understand everything he explains and he is happy to educate people. Something I, personally, haven't seen in a medical doctor before.

    From the video:
    1. Stop worrying about your palpitations if you have been checked out by a cardiologist and your palps were found to be benign. They are not dangerous, only inconvenient. Worrying and having anxiety about them only makes them come more frequently.
    2. Cut out excessive alcohol, particularly binge drinking. Also, the sulfites in wine contribute to more palpitations.
2a. Cut out caffeine, carbonated drinks, and energy drinks as they increase palpitations.
    3. Stop smoking. Smoking induces chronic inflammation in the body which increases palps.
    4. Start doing gentle exercise. If your palps are benign (see tip #1), don't worry about doing some exercise, it will be fine. Start with 10 mins of walking per day and build up from there. Exercise reduces inflammation which in turn reduces palps.
    5. Get good sleep and enough of it. Lack of sleep has a huge inflammatory effect on the body which increases palps.
    6. Reduce your stress levels. Stress is inflammatory. If possible, take time off work and take a vacation to someplace sunny and relax.
    7. Reduce or stop eating processed foods. They are pro-inflammatory and the processing of the food strips their vitamins and minerals while also adding in toxins, chemicals, and preservatives. Try to primarily eat organic whole foods. Organic means the food has not been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc., which are all poisonous to eat. Washing produce does not remove much of these poisons. Organic also inherently means non-GMO.
7a. Eat smaller portions. Large meals stretch the stomach which can worsen palpitations.
    8. If you have acid reflux, get it treated. Reflux is generally caused by LOW stomach acid, not high. So antacids and PPI's will only make the problem worse. Avoid eating foods that you know give you reflux. For many people this would be things like dairy and chocolate.
    9. Get your iron levels checked. Iron deficiency anemia can cause palps. Get your thyroid tested. Get your magnesium levels tested. Magnesium deficiency is most commonly caused by eating a diet high in processed foods.
    10. Supplement with magnesium. The best way is to eat leafy vegetables. But if you must take a magnesium supplement, use any form except magnesium oxide because it's bioavailability is very low.

I am so relieved to find a doctor that makes me feel like I'm not crazy about reflux and palpitations. How can you relax and not worry after a palpitation??????? It is so hard to not worry, but at least there is a doctor that addresses how difficult he knows it is to just ignore it. Thanks so much for these videos, just having knowledge from a professional in the heart palpitation field is reassuring. I hope you continue to make more of these. I newly suffer from heart palpitations and went to the emergency room, they said its no big deal, but did not think they are related to the reflux or vegas nerve??????? I know my body and I know they are related, so thanks for validating my feelings doctor! How great is it for you to reach out to the world of people suffering, not just to your paying patients, GOD bless ;)

I realize these videos are several years old but they helped me overcome almost debilitating anxiety over my benign heart palpitations. I don't know if the anxiety came first or the palpitations but either way it developed into a vicious cycle. I started having major and frequent panic attacks. Eventually, i was put on the correct medication for me and the panic attacks stopped. I still have palpitations but I don't focus on them anymore. I take a magnesium supplement called SlowMg that really does help. I gave up alcohol which helped the palpitations AND the anxiety. I do smoke and need to stop but I am very thankful for these videos. They helped me to accept that what i was experiencing was NOT going to kill me. I wasted a decade living in fear. Thank you Dr. Gupta for caring enough to make these videos. It really shows a level of compassion and empathy that people who experience these symptoms really need from doctors. THANK YOU AGAIN!

Thank you so much - I wish there were more doctors like you! I'm very very athletic and developed arrhythmia (PVCs, occasional Tachycardia, some Flutter) about 11 years ago. Had an Echo, holter etc. and all was fine and diagnosed benign arrhythmias. It took 5 years after this for a doc to finally take my extremely low ferritin levels seriously (hemoglobin and RBC were fine) and put me on iron supplementation! This really helped. In addition, I take magnesium (I did this on my own after researching it a bit....my doctor knew nothing about it) and I quit ALL caffeine. I rarely get PVCs and never get tachycardia anymore. I do get the occasional flutter but I try not to worry about it. You are helping so many people :)

Glad you are discussing ectopic beats. I have them constantly, accompanied with brutal brutal symptoms of "hunger" sensations (not hungry, not appetite), dizzy, lightheaded, weak legs, cold sweats, disorientations. A holter once showed 192 ectopic beats in on hour, othertimes, at random, less. The symptoms are brutal and scary, not the ectopic beats. I had a fasting serum glucose test (normal) but then again, tests for diabetes are unreliable. Had hormones tested, they were normal. Hypothyroid tests fluctuate, and antibodies for Hashimoto was slightly elevated, thereafter normal. Again, those tests are unreliable. Input welcome. Many thanks.

Thank you so much for explaining this. I am a 38 y/o Firefighter Paramedic in California, long time athlete. Like a light switch, I started experiencing bad PVC's, 1-5 every minute. Your explanation is the best and most re-assuring I have heard thus far. You are right, it IS infuriating to hear ectopic beats are benign and ablation is not necessary. I am going through the process now, holter monitor, echo, ECG etc. Labs came back normal - so maybe some electrical aberrant pathway. But this has been so helpful for me. Thank you for your compassion and calm demeanor. Wonderfully helpful.

Very glad to come across this video. This started happening back in June. Suddenly my pulse was 136-140 and would last that way like 3 hours. I started having chest pain & palpitations. This obviously led to anxiety! This lasted June 27 until the end of August.
Labs & EKG fine. Very scary. People didn't listen when i explain THIS is causing anxiety - not anxiety causing the palpitations. I'm embarrassed that I've had 3 ER visits and 2 regular Dr visits. I have a cardiology appt scheduled next month. Don't drink, don't smoke, no drugs, & cut back coffee & soda even.
It's hard to wait. Taking magnesium really seemed to help because it's helped control my pulse even when I do have the pain & palpitations.

I really enjoy these vdeos. I started having heart palpitations a few years ago and chalked it up to menopause and being overweight. I ended up going to the ER one night after being awakened with an irregular heartbeat. They kept me for a day and ran an Ekg< echocardiogram and blood work to check thyroid and other levels> i was given blood pressure meds and told to follow up with a cardiologist (which is scheduled for next month)> It took 8 hours for my heart to return to normal. IHAVE ALTERED MY DIET< EXERCISED MORE AND FOLLOWED THE OTHER SUGGESTIONS> MY PROBLEM IS THAT I HAVE DIFFICULTY WITH SLEEPING> WHEN I LIE DOWN< I AM USUALLY AWAKENED WITH PALPITATIONS AND I AM BECOMING NERVOUS ABOUT LYING DOWN> I FREQUENTLY SLEEP SITTING UP< WHICH LEADS TO OTHER PROBLEMS SUCH AS LACK OF SLEEP AND NECK AND BACK PAINS> I WAS WONDERING IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR WAYS TO AVOID PALPITATIONS AT NIGHT>

Thank you so much for this. Went to the ER two days ago for palpitations and your number one tip (to simply not worry about it) was one of the most comforting tips I've ever heard. The anxiety and panic palpitations can cause -- especially if they're new to you -- is overlooked, as I've now experienced it myself. The simple fact of acknowledging that your heart is racing for apparently no reason is enough to propel you into a state of panic and fear, which of course, compounds the issue. Some background; I'm a fit and very physically active 30 year old whose palpitations started after switching to a ketogenic diet. I stupidly left out a lot of leafy greens and didn't happen to be eating enough magnesium-rich foods and it caught up with me. I'm now supplementing with magnesium and palpitations have declined dramatically. Occasionally I still have a bit of shortness of breath from time to time but I can manage that if I don't worry about it too much and bring myself into a state of panic.

God Bless you sir. I have been suffering mental anguish for almost 10 years now because of the palps, and these palps have been an albatross that have ruined my quality of life for a decade. It has turned me into a basket case. I constantly wait for the next round and constantly obsess over it. It is just awful. Your videos have brought me comfort. Thank you for this selfless act, it is so greatly appreciated. I haven't really found yet your description of my heart palps. I do have GERD and when I have my palps it feels more like flutters in my lower chest, or as if my heart is rolling in my chest. It's hard to explain. I also have a strong desire to cough when these palps occur. My heart flutters then my fear kicks in which causes my heart rate to increase. I'm able to calm myself relatively quickly and then my heartbeat goes back to normal. I'm really hoping to find this explanation. I've watched your videos where you describe the different kinds of palps and really didn't find anything that I felt fit my scenario.

Thank you so much for all your videos. I've been dealing with palpitations for 7 years after going for various scans and tests i was told my heart was normal and not to worry. After that i was still living with them and was told it was down to stress in my life, although i knew the stress was coming from the palpitations! You've taught me how to manage and deal with them and I've been feeling so much better these past months. I now only experience the odd faint skipped beat from time to time, whereas before they tended to be quite strong like a heavy thud. Exercise, eating alot healthier and taking magnesium supplements are definitely helping me. :-) Much love.

    Hello sir!
I'm a 20 years old male from Nepal. I had been having abnormally fast heartbeats for a couple of months especially before I intended to sleep and while I was physically inactive. I completely ignored it assuming that it was not a big issue. But last night, I felt very uncomfortable as my heartbeats were too fast and loud. Due to this, I felt short of breath and nausea also. I guessed it was a symptom of heart attack. Then, I began to search on RUclips about the symptoms of heart attack. After watching few other videos, I saw your videos as well, which I found very helpful, relatable and complete. After watching your all videos carefully, I came to know what I had were palpitations. Keeping this in mind, I went to a nearby hospital this morning. The doctor checked my BP and had an Electrocardiogram(ECG) test. All reports were normal. He told me that the cause of my problem is stress and suggested me not to have it.
But I'm still not satisfied by his answer. It's true that I've been in a stressful situation for a few months, I've been having a lot of caffines, I've been having an unhealthy lifestyle as I was unaware of the degree of seriousness of my health issues.
After knowing about it, I'm really committed to live a healthy lifestyle onwards. I'm prepared to avoid all the possible causes of such problems.
But the most important help I need is to know whether I should completely rely on my future lifestyle to be completely healthy, or I need to take any medicines now also? According to my doctor and test reports, I'm normal. According to my problem and your videos, I have palpitations. What should I do in this dilemma??
    Please help me out sir.

When you can’t sleep and when you enter viscious cycles of fatigue driving adrenaline and cortisol driving palpitations and driving bad sleep. I appreciate the holiday comment, but when stress is unavoidable: sick kids, covid lockdowns etc. Please keep up the good work. You’re saving lives.

You mentioned reflux. It only took me about 25 years to work out that my morning porridge (oats) was a major heartburn trigger for me. It became most apparent during my second pregnancy when the heartburn was so bad after eating porridge that I had to stop eating it for the rest of the pregnancy. And then after I gave birth I was out of the habit of eating porridge. When I started doing it again, or eating biscuits with oats in them, I realised that I had not been getting heartburn that much anymore and suddenly there it was again after eating oats. Of course other things give me heartburn too but the thing that has helped the most was starting a low carb / keto diet. You tend to avoid grains (including oats) on this diet. I eat a lot of dairy, cheese, milk yoghurt, but they don't give me heartburn at all. When I eat grain carbohydrates, rye, wheat, oats, and possibly in combination with dairy (milk in porridge, cheese on toast, etc) then I would get heartburn. But I also drink goat's milk rather than cow's milk, and I find it's much easier to digest too. But OATS! They were my number one daily heartburn trigger!

Thanks again so much Dr Gupta. You and my doctor helped me so much, and I’m so grateful. I’m going back on magnesium now as I’m beginning to get them again off and on, but it’s mostly following bouts of anxiety. Even if the anxiety was quite a bit earlier I still get them later on sometimes. However, most days I have either 1 or no ectopic. I’ve been going on forest walks about every second day and I think it’s really helping. I only ever once got an ectopic beat in the forest, and it was while I was standing still, not exercising. If anyone wants to talk about their ectopic beats, feel free to reach out to me as I know how it feels.

Thank you for mentioning sleep apnea. My sleep doctor said there is not just an Epidemic, but a Pandemic of this condition emerging.
When people stop breathing, their body shoots out stress chemicals (adrenaline, cortisol) which are very stressful on the heart and body.
For people who cannot get sleep testing or CPAP, the worst position for a floppy airway is 'on the back'. Try 'side sleeping' to reduce apnea events.
