I say (along with others here), let it inspire. Understand what is possible, listen, study, practice and most of all, enjoy. The better you become at your instrument, the more you will love it. The heart of a musician is unlike any other. It's never work to play music even if you get paid. Playing is like a vital function that we can't live without. Jacob Collier has a gift for us...inspiration.
Yes! Yes! YES!!! If you let it inspire you, people like Jacob give you boundless energy!! It's honestly one of the best things I've ever done for myself. The way I see it, there are so many great masters across several styles that I thnk to myself "There's no reason I can't learn to do that, too!"
Big agree. Consider the flip side as well. It would be lonely if you were the biggest genius out there without anyone to look up to and learn from. We should be glad that there's someone out there not only as intelligent and gifted as Jacob, but selfless enough with their knowledge to share it with everyone who's interested enough to look. He does fantastic Q and A's where he goes into his views on harmony and many other musical concepts. In a lot of ways he is the musical embodiment of the age of digital communication. Without being able to grow up in an era where all the most important music is easily accessible through the internet I dont think we would have seen someone with the breadth of knowledge that he has.
That's beautifully said, and applies to all artistic comparisons. I will steal this as I explain to my daughter why she shouldn't be jealous every time she sees a better dancer her age! Jacob certainly inspires and reminds us how great art frees our soul.
I'm male, 54, musician, cold, hard, cynical, "solid supporter of family" in a modern world, I shove my emotions down. Jacob's music is the only thing I know of that forces me to FEEL. I don't even know how I feel about that per se. But I will say it's powerful stuff, that's for sure. It's weird to say the only human who can make me really feel anything now is some young dude I don't personally know.
It's not difficult to understand why a lifetime of hurt and "shoving the emotions down" results in not acknowledging our feelings...... It's not that we don't feel, but we develop ways of masking and hiding our feelings, so we can keep on going in our lives, doing what we need to do to do. It seems paradoxical, but the only way to let go of the pain is to first allow yourself to feel it. It may feel like this accumulated pain will kill you, if you "let it out", but there are ways to do it without this happening. Continuing to hold these wounds inside us is where sickness like cancer, heart disease etc come from. Jacob's great gift is to help people open their hearts, which IS the way home

Jacob, I cried during the rehearsal of this track, I cried during the concert and now I am crying again. This is beyond beautiful. This touches my inner soul like nothing else. And now when I listen to it in full audio you were right about the MO. You wanted to do this arrangement in a classical way and you didn't know what to expect from the orchestra. But you were blown away. Like I am blown away in the real early morning of Saturday the 27th of August 2016.

I’m 70 too. Just discovered him after article in The Times. I’m a pretty trad classical music lover, and I simply cannot get enough of Jacob. He has just opened my eyes. I too listen every night. I love listening to his technical stuff too. Amazing.
I seriously don't get it how people say Jacob's music has no soul and how no one outside of the music scene will listen to his stuff. I mean, I have no idea about music theory at all but he continues to tug my heartstrings in ways I didn't even know was possible before.

I can’t get my head around this performance. It’s some of the purest, human expression I’ve ever had the pleasure to witness and the fact that it’s happening in my lifetime is just nuts.

The silence of the Royal Albert Hall at the end of the song is just the greatest award a band can have, if the representation is majestic. That was definitely the case here... The silence speaks for itself... Just wonderful, I always have goosebumps listening to this...

5:35... his face. I can only imagine what emotion it contains. The feeling of having your very own piece played around you by a a hundred instruments in glorious harmonies. It all comes to a climax at 5:35 and I just feel like he knows that too. He is experiencing a moment of pure bliss.
Can this creative genius cover more traditional bases? - ha! Mr. Collier's artistry has the all-important ingredient of integrity. We are so grateful for this unexpected thrill-ride. I'm a 60 yr-old musician/songwriter. This musical richness might be as good as it's gonna get in my life, I'm thinking. God has some amazing legs. And what a good guy, to boot. When I listen to @Jacobcollier the word that springs to mind is ‘honesty’. Love his interpretation of songs and the clarity in his voice. His voice is definitely another one of the instruments he ‘plays’. Every note, every pause seems intentional. From the perceived falter at 4:38 to his voice control at 5:03 and the culmination of the piece at 6:21, it’s just beautiful. Encore Sir! Encore... and the orchestra... beautiful.
Some of the underlying chords provided by the orchestra are just so glowing. They sound just like something you'd hear from Joe Hisaishi in a Ghibli movie...
This just makes my chest tight, I'm wondering how many of the musicians involved listen to this and cry. Young man, the beauty of this music is astounding, please thrill us for many years.
The world is crazy right now. Everything seems to be hopelessly bleak. And yet, here we are... living in the time that Jacob Collier existed. If there is a future history, he will surely be a shining star in it.
I'm speechless knowing how at just the age of 22, Jacob Collier has so much control of his voice and such an amazing and constantly growing range. He's learned so much and genuinely cares about continuously educating himself on how to become a better version of himself everyday. This is the most moving piece I've heard in such a long time, and I can't wait to see him grow as a musician and person. If Jacob Collier were to ever reply to this comment, I promise to buy a ticket to the closest concert available to me. I don't usually attend live concerts, but I know I'd be so moved listening to someone who is so mature and talented in their passion. Very inspiring, and thank you for your lovely contribution to the world of music.
His tour isn't anywhere near my state anymore, which means the costs would be a considerable amount. If he were to perform anywhere near where I live, I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat. However, if it takes place in another state, then I would not have the expenses to buy the ticket AND airfair, hotel fees, etc. It would, unfortunately, take a considerable amount of time before I could see a concert of his outside of my state.

And can play with all of that simultaneously and do it live is almost beyond belief. This sort of talent is once in a century. He is surely this century's J.S. Bach!

Simply stunning, Jacob. Lovely arrangement. Oh, and your vocal performance..... not only your trademark inhuman tonal range, but a dynamic range that has me in tears as I write this. Such a mature and emotional rendering of a classic song, with a cheeky sprinkling of jazz fun at the end of some phrases....some of them surprising, but all serving to make the performance your own. I can tell that the entire audience were sitting on the last millimetres of their seats as you began the last verse. Me? I would surely ended up on the floor.
This music is so beautiful that it makes me feel stupid, corny and dumb trying to explain how it makes me feel. I don't know if there's anything that makes me feel more alive than this music.
When I started looking into this 'musical genius/prodigy' I did not understand much of what he was doing. I am too old school to appreciate most of it. I kept searching... Then I found this. I do understand what it is to compose, write lyrics, and arrange a song for an entire orchestra. I do understand the foundations of performance, the use of phrasing, vocal coloring, dynamics, glissando, vibrato etc to keep an audience engaged. He is an inventive and creative musical genius - who also happens to know what the hell he's doing with a microphone, and a piano and a live audience!
Jacob is God’s gift to the world. Light years ahead in the realm of music. I would give anything to see him in concert. He has made me smile through COVID.

His music is sometimes like wiggling your toes in a burbling little brook, it's clear and gentle, maybe a bit chilly. Then he comes in with some chord, or lyric and suddenly you're in a warm enfolding ocean, no land in sight, but you're floating with the current and you know the country it's taking you to. When I listen to @Jacobcollier the word that springs to mind is ‘honesty’. Love his interpretation of songs and the clarity in his voice. His voice is definitely another one of the instruments he ‘plays’. Every note, every pause seems intentional. From the perceived falter at 4:38 to his voice control at 5:03 and the culmination of the piece at 6:21, it’s just beautiful. Encore Sir! Encore... and the orchestra... beautiful.

Some of the underlying chords provided by the orchestra are just so glowing. They sound just like something you'd hear from Joe Hisaishi in a Ghibli movie...

I'm speechless knowing how at just the age of 22, Jacob Collier has so much control of his voice and such an amazing and constantly growing range. He's learned so much and genuinely cares about continuously educating himself on how to become a better version of himself everyday. This is the most moving piece I've heard in such a long time, and I can't wait to see him grow as a musician and person.

His tour isn't anywhere near my state anymore, which means the costs would be a considerable amount. If he were to perform anywhere near where I live, I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat. However, if it takes place in another state, then I would not have the expenses to buy the ticket AND airfair, hotel fees, etc. It would, unfortunately, take a considerable amount of time before I could see a concert of his outside of my state.

And can play with all of that simultaneously and do it live is almost beyond belief. This sort of talent is once in a century. He is surely this century's J.S. Bach!

Simply stunning, Jacob. Lovely arrangement. Oh, and your vocal performance..... not only your trademark inhuman tonal range, but a dynamic range that has me in tears as I write this. Such a mature and emotional rendering of a classic song, with a cheeky sprinkling of jazz fun at the end of some phrases....some of them surprising, but all serving to make the performance your own.
I can tell that the entire audience were sitting on the last millimetres of their seats as you began the last verse. Me? I would surely ended up on the floor.

When I started looking into this 'musical genius/prodigy' I did not understand much of what he was doing. I am too old school to appreciate most of it. I kept searching... Then I found this. I do understand what it is to compose, write lyrics, and arrange a song for an entire orchestra. I do understand the foundations of performance, the use of phrasing, vocal coloring, dynamics, glissando, vibrato etc to keep an audience engaged. He is an inventive and creative musical genius - who also happens to know what the hell he's doing with a microphone, and a piano and a live audience!
Jacob is God’s gift to the world. Light years ahead in the realm of music. I would give anything to see him in concert. He has made me smile through COVID.
