Doesn't matter what cars in the future will "beat" it. Doesn't matter if even Ferrari made a "better" car. Nothing will be the F1, and it'll always be my favorite super car ever made.
No need for disappointment, there are little or no production cars that can "beat" a race car in anything other than in some cases straight line speed. But drag racing is hardly a skill compared to track driving!
Almost 13 years later, I'm back again just to hear the most epic road car downshifts ever. And did anyone notice how damn FAST those revs jump??? from like 2k to almost 6k in the blink of an eye. Take a bow, Paul Rosche
no one actually likes the p1. its a joke. you can't seriously drive a p1 because it doesn't have any recovery or generator system for it's engine. so you just tug around an enormous amount of weight that offers you a short period of power.
I've probably posted here before, but I revisit this video several times a year, months apart, just to hear this car's exhaust note. I'd love to duplicate that sound on my 350z
That thing is a absolute animal.......the fucken sound of the down shifts and engine is astonishing. Surely there nothing like this could be produced again.
+ManWhatever1 how is the p1 a failure if it's because it's slower than the f1 that's stupid because it's only due to electronic limiters without them it does about 247 mph
15years later… I swear I just shed tear watching this video… I’ve seen the F1 before but this particular video with the striped out F1 converted roadcar weighing less than a ton, with the most glorious downshifts I’ve ever heard… it literally had me in tears 🥹
That's how I start off in my ZO6 every time. I think anyone could drive a stick today with the way the electronics run the car and a gentle release of the clutch. I really believe that my C5 ZO6 that the designers must have loved the McLaren F1 because there are signs of that design all over my car down to the wagon wheels that were available in the first couple of years of the C5 ¿`_
Good question. Shorter gears give worse top speed but more acceleration. On a track there usually isn't a straight long enough to hit 240mph. As a result, shorter gearing will give this car a better 0-60 time, 60ft time, quarter mile time, probably a better half mile time too.
The single most desirable car in the world. More than a Ferrari La Ferrari, more than current McLaren, more than a Bugatti Chiron, more than anything. That brand, that model, that individual example. That was chassis number 10, which was the first ever GTR. A Bugatti Atlantique from 1937 would be worth more money, but you wouldn't actually want to drive it anywhere. A Porsche hybrid (number with a 9 in it) from 2030 might be faster, maybe, but it comes without a steering wheel, because people are not allowed to do silly things like ride motorbikes or drive sportscars any more... The all-time high point of beautiful fast exotic road-going cars, is this exact one. This is the greatest sportscar man has yet made.
I believe the Noble M600 comes close in spirit. As well as the Aston Martin DBS (manual) & Mazda MX-5/S2000/original Supra/WRX STI/ BAC Mono (manual) versions on the lower pay scale. Cars that have been f\or their primary purposes. To be enjoyed while giving the car hard driving and a good thrashing. With minimal hand holding.
OMG i don't think ive ever heard a gear change quite like that. I'm ever more glad this car exists now in the presence of the upcoming P1. Regardless of how awesome it is, i cant imagine it would be as enthralling as this. Pure drivers cars will be left to the likes of Caterham, Noble for a good few years. While Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren develop their cars so their sickly rich clientele have something to brag about.
I have not had the good fortune to drive a McLaren ever. I have the 911s4. It is quite a sweet ride and a rush as the volume goes up while controlled by the right foot.. Not even close to this McLaren. Nick Mason has a very nice collection of toys. Thanks Nick for sharing them on youtube.
Without the engine the car is nothing lol. Imaging if it was 130 hp less like mclaren Originally wanted it. It would not be the legend today If it wasn't. The British made the chassis yes but the engine is the heart.

I come back to this video year after year just to hear that. Nothing else like it. Doug De Muro's review of the Cayman GT4RS is somewhere in the ballpark, though, and it a car that is (slightly) more accessible for us dreamers.
If I was driving that car. I would have blown a load in my pants also! That car is insane. I would take that over the Ferrari F40 any day. But I'm probably stating the obvious.
i've never driven a sports car before. i've only driven a small displacement 1000cc 3-cylinder car since i got my license. so,if i suddenly switch into this car, what do you think it's gonna happen to me? i think you can give me the answer because you are a very experienced motor journalist. ah, i just got one more question to ask. may i know why this f1 gtr has a lower top speed than the normal f1? should it be faster?
1) This IS a road car. 2) With the same gearing this one will be victorious over a normal F1 when its about acceleration. Top Speed however the normal F1 is the winner

SuperSedans 200kg makes a world of difference anywhere !!! hell, if i had 200 less Kg in my car it would make it run near 5s 0-60mph... i cant quite understand the point of ur comment on my reply here...
The F1-GTR has always been my hero car, it's just so beautiful in so many ways. Aesthetically the body seems to have a timeless quality to it, the fact that performance of the vehicle is still comparable to that of today's hypercars and just the purity of focus in the design and engineering of the car are what makes it so special.
@Jarhead362 Mercedes and McLaren are seperate companies. They worked together in F1 and for the SLR road car. The F1 is from the era before the two companies partnered up.
I had originaly saw this car in the first Need for Speed game back in the 90s. I was suprised that the driver is seated centeral, rather than on the far sides. The GTR is truly, one of a kind. :D
@kmk021 Don't be ignorant. Emission test back in 1992 and 2005 are totally different. And you've not accounted for the weight difference of 700 kg. The Bugatti's engine had to be built to today's emissions whereas the McLaren F1's engine is not bound by any emissions.
@1987LOZ1987 the display obviously cannot say MPH when the speed is in KMH. there's a law that says that road legal cars must have speedos accurate to within 10%+/- the actual GPS speed, manufacturers usually make it 10% faster so that cars don't overspeed. This GTR is road legal. Its a converted LM racecar. if this were meant to be a racecar and not a roadcar, it wudnt make sense anyway to decieve the driver that he was doing 190mph instead of 190kmh. There's a LM rule banning this too.
Normally I think spending millions of dollars on a car is ridiculous, but the McLaren F1 is the lone exception. Greatest supercar ever made, and the fact that today's supercars are still being compared to the F1 speaks volumes.
as steve had mentioned, super short gears make this car slower than the regular variant but what i don't understand is how do super short gears make the car slower? although i'm a car enthusiast but actually i don't know much about the mechanical staff of a car. can you please explain what is super short gear is all about in detail to me. your explanation will be highly appreciated.
@csimi85 190kmh is not likely. 5th gear and doing 125kmh and getting it to rev like its roaring at 6000rpm , means the gears are ridiculously closely spaced, even for a racecar. thats like one gear for every 30kmh. the driver would be like accelerating for half a second, then shifting....thats not very convienient in a race. the stock f1 does 100-200kmh in 6.2s,125-190kmh in 5.5s would be slower than a stock f1. its also illegal to own a speedo that wrongly shows mph instead of kmh.
Those downshifts at 3:18 are the most jaw dropping sounds to ever come from a vehicle.
It’s vicious
That's a whip
The F1 GTR is not to be taken lightly. Despite the livery on this one it's really, really serious car.
3:18 That is the most insane sound that I've ever heard coming out from a car.
Same here!
I dont think its insane . I think just that evolution been mistaken . We drive not what we really deserve in 2019
I come to listen to exactly this every few weeks
Best downshifting noise ever.
Every downshift sounds like a puppy being hit with Bruce Lee's one inch punch.
I just came.
Schleberger those downshifts makes everyone tear
Schleberger sounds like a whip, it's just amazing. Never heard something like that.
Down shift eargasm symphonic beauty! 👌

It's funny Ferrari has and never will build a "better" car.
I’m curious to see about how people compare this and the T.50
The downshifts sound like a Bruce Lee punch.
JAJAJAJJAAJA
Hahahhahahah
Extraordinary!
Exactly mate. Fucking exactly. It makes me so angry and happy at the same time. I wanna build a powertrain like that
Ya... punches to the engine.
The downshifts at 3:17 changed my life.
Me too bruh
Geezus the sound of the clutch is amazing.
same and that statement is no exaggeration.
3:19 to 3:39. best symphony in the world. no mozart or beethoven
Almost 13 years later, I'm back again just to hear the most epic road car downshifts ever.
And did anyone notice how damn FAST those revs jump??? from like 2k to almost 6k in the blink of an eye. Take a bow, Paul Rosche
Yep, back again
so there is porn on youtube
The spike of revs while downshifting...my god.
This thing was really ahead of its time...
+doomie61 it will probably hold that record too. Since every car now days is being Tubro charged due to pollution control.
doomie61 on its leman debut mclaren entered 5 cars and they got a 1 2 3 4 5 finish no one else has done it
every downshift rev match sounds like a punch from someone from dragonball z
Enrico Bagarotto It sounds like a punch from One Punch Man lol
yeah those downshifts hit pretty hard haha
I still prefer this over the beloved P1. It was built for a purpose, and that's what makes it unique.
I dont like P1 :( nothing special
no one actually likes the p1. its a joke. you can't seriously drive a p1 because it doesn't have any recovery or generator system for it's engine. so you just tug around an enormous amount of weight that offers you a short period of power.
Bo Huggabee, yea no one likes the P1 lol. You have facts to back up that claim too? Don’t worry, I’ll wait....
@@treatb09 you have no idea what you're talking about
Itsbuukt by Gordon Murray CBE that's why. Too much overheads and involvement now hence, enter the T.50. Can't wait
The 90s were the peak of supercars
I would say the 90's up to early 2000's (Enzo, Carrera S, SLR McLaren, Murcielago).
I'd say up to 2004
Don't forget the SL65 AMG V12 black series 1000 nm@@joaoandrade2828
3:18 SOUNDGASM
over the last 3 years I've been coming back to this video every 2 months on regular basis. Best video ever made!
Those down shifts are mindblowing!! reminds me of the 787b!
amazing!
Insured for £2.5 million, must be up near £20 million in 2017
Insurance is 25 million now
$30M now.
Wow that is truly mind blowing
Only maintaining and keep it in running condition per year is more money than 99.9 percent of us will ever make in a lifetime
Still can't get enough of those sounds. Shifts are beyond explaining. P1 GTR coming soon, would be a great time to get a F1 GTR out for a small test.
The sound of the clutch is from another dimension. Geezus.
The sounds of the downshifts at 3:17 sound pretty awesome, I can only imagine the acceleration of a car that can do 240 compacted to 190mph
OMFG the shifting sound
I've probably posted here before, but I revisit this video several times a year, months apart, just to hear this car's exhaust note. I'd love to duplicate that sound on my 350z
Same!
Same
That thing is a absolute animal.......the fucken sound of the down shifts and engine is astonishing. Surely there nothing like this could be produced again.
Why can't there be cars made like this anymore???
Because of the rules and regulations are so strict today that manufacturers must comply with factors such as emissions, design, safety, etc.
Leftists
This isn't the road going car actually. It's a converted race car.
Go check Gordon Murray's T50 and now the T50S.
I still think this looks a lot nice that the P1.
Best Super Car of all time and it's great to know that it was designed and manufactured in the UK.
Too bad nothing that comes from the UK now is worth mentioning.
ManWhatever1 What like the McLaren P1???
David Lyon
I think it's a failure.
David Lyon I was referring to the P1 not the F1.
+ManWhatever1 how is the p1 a failure if it's because it's slower than the f1 that's stupid because it's only due to electronic limiters without them it does about 247 mph
I'm having a hard time picking this or the Pagani Zonda R. don't matter because I can't afford neither.
Have to go with the Mclaren just for the history and legend behind it.
The F1 GTR is way more expensive
well.. you can drive the F1 GTR on the road. Cant drive the Zonda R anywhere... lol
It'd be this hands down
Why don't have both :v
you know why a drummer owns that car?
CAUSE OF THE ENGINE SOUND :D
Best car engine ever and best sound
Steve's face @ 2:40 is priceless. That tells me how amazing this car really is considering everything else he's driven before this.
It's 2019 and I still come back to this video for the downshifts.
So do i in 2020. Still no car existing with such downshifts.
3:17 those downshifts.. I'm thinking of how to describe it but I actually dont know what to say.
They're orgasmic.
nothing beats the Mclaren F1 GTR , every boy s wet dream
This beast is basically the Frankenstein Monster of super cars, cheers UK!

the down changes... the fucking down changes. satans fucking whip!
940kg... 620hp.... super short gearing.. this makes a Lotus Exige look tame.. what a masterpiece
the look on his face at 2.41 is classic. Why would u want anything else
This is probably the first video that got me interested in GT racing and the technical aspects of cars.
Good god almighty!! And I dont even comment on RUclips videos.
omg i love the sound of the engine when he down shifts :D
I would do unimaginable things just to be able to smell the seat you were sitting on
That gear change is ferocious and phenomenal. All gear changes should sound like that
I really wish they would race it half a mile vs Veyron just to grt an ides jow fast this McLaren is. The f1 is my favorite car of all time.

This will age very very greatly. :) wonderfully engineered and made. A piece of art.
Watching this now in 2023 and hearing it's insured for 2 million is crazy, X that by 10 now days lol

still watching it. ❤

The downshifts are overwhelming, genuinely shocked how insane they sound.
Yup. Not to mention the thing climbs from 130-190mph in like 4 seconds.
You can't TELL me the F1 isn't the greatest driver's car ever made.
If i were given the option to take a p1 or this I would take this with no hesitation
3:18 the downshift hit harder than inception music
£2.5m insurance on a McLaren GTR sounds like a joke these days.
This got me very very excited for the T50!
Number plate checks out on car check apps registered 1/12/99 dope car! 👌 best bmw engine ever
Still watching this in 2018
I have never in my life heard downshifts like that. UN.REAL.
The downshifts at 3:17 just gives you goosbumps... What a machine!
Why start a rolling race in 4th gear. That's just demonstrating low rpm torque.
Low down torque is the most important torque in any internal combustion vehicle, that's why!!
you answered your own question
Those downshifts into lower gears give me goosebumps.
Those downshifts man, those fucking downshifts. Face expression at 2:40 says it all about this car.
love the sound it makes when he shifts gears!
