McLaren's shock Le Mans win - 1995 race highlights

  • McLaren never intended for its F1 three-seater supercar to race, nor did it want the GTR version it hurriedly developed for a select group of customers early in 1995 to go to Le Mans in year one. But an irresistible momentum took the BMW-powered machine into competition, straight to Le Mans in its first season and then all the way to an unlikely victory in the world's toughest endurance race.

for those casual F1 fans that claim its "just a road car with a wing".... here are the stats.
the F1 GTR was based upon the road car, that's not special, all GT cars are based on road cars. that's the class it enetered.
the engine required homologation for the GT class, the power wasn't the issue, it was the power to weight ratio, and rather than making the car heavier, mclaren opted to reduce the power from 627ps (not HP) to 600ps using restrictors.
the bodywork was 90% factory, other than a front splitter, incorporating the front bumper too, rear bumper, rear diffuser, side skirts, rear spoiler, front luggage area and engine cover, which were changed for either lighter versions (plastic engine cover was thinner lexan)
the interior had all of the sound deadening material removed, carpets, passenger seats, radio (including the lightweight Kenwood cd changer) clocks, wiring, fuses, door cards, roof lining, dashboard etc, all replaced with racing versions for safety requirements.
brakes were upgraded to carbon ceramic Formula 1 technology for the repeated stops on the mulsanne.
the exhaust system had been made more free flowing, removing the huge titanium silencer in the process.
all the rubber in the suspension was replaced with rose joints.
    custom suspension arms were used.
the ducted fan used to help stick the car to the road at speed, was removed
the fuel cell was upgraded to a competition fuel cell.
but nothing was done to the car that couldn't be reversed, famously the Sultan of brunai has 6 or 7 mclaren F1's, including one of the cars that ran in this race, converted to a road car.
don't confuse the F1 GTR with the F1LM wich was a tribute to the 1995 winning cars.
the main difference between the LM and the GTR, well the LM still had its seats, all 3 of them. but due to it not having a roll cage, it was 49KG lighter than the race car, the engine was tuned for more power too boasting 680HP, the bodywork in "high downforce" models (there were only ever 5 in total) was identical to the GTR race car apart from an engraving on the rear wing noting "1995 LM winners" and some grilles in the openings for road regulations.
the final drive was also higher to facilitate faster acceleration than the road car. but coupled with the higher RPM of the engine, this was not what limited the top speed to 225mph, it was aerodynamics that did that. it also had steel brakes, albeit bigger ones than the standard road car.
interestingly, the 1996 F1 LM high downforce pack (with only 1 being in factory orange and later ones repainted) it had the same power to weight ratio of the Mclaren P1.
the F1 LM road car was the fastest, most powerful and lightest of all the F1's including the GTR race car and the longtail.
the GTR race car was NOT just a road car with slicks.
there is a road legal longtail GTR that was the mclaren test car, it raced at LM and was then passed around collectors in various countries, mainly japan, where it raced in LARK colours, it now resides in England, back at its home, in the original prototype livery of the pink and yellow scribbles, albeit now in road trim rather than race trim.
it does come with all of its spare parts though, should anyone who buys the 30+mil car, to turn it back into a race car.

You’re right, it’s not just a road car with slicks. But the reason why that saying’s become popular is because the sentiment is rather accurate; the McLaren F1 GTR was remarkably close to the road going variant, with the vast majority of the changes being made in order to make the car regulation compliant or being simple weight stripping.

This was supposed to be the year Mario Andretti would become only the second man in history to win the F1 title, the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24-hour race after Graham Hill did it in the 60s. Alas, mechanical problems meant he would fall short of his goal. The only driver close to equaling Graham Hill is Fernando Alonso, but racing at Indy with his current F1 contract is looking to be quite difficult, and it's possible that he never gets the chance to race the Indy 500 again.

I really want to believe this, however, all those main or minor machanical failures just kept the Ferrari away from winning. It's technical issue, it's bad luck and it's also part of the race.

Great historic win for the Mac F1.
Shame there was no mention or clip of the Honda NSX which took the GT2 crown particularly as it was this car that inspired Gordon Murray to design and build the F1 in the first place.
Of course, Murray did wish the NSX had more power, and that was one of the things he wished to solve with the McLaren F1. The 627 horsepower V12 that sits in the F1 right now gives it more power than the NSX, but most other design specifications remain NSX inspired.
The McLaren F1 is an amazing car, no doubt, but it owes a great deal of gratitude to the NSX for its excellent design and handling.

He asked Honda to make him a 580hp engine at no more than 180kg including exaust....Honda refused. The crown goes to Paul Roche and BMW. The F1 was mainly about the engine, and what an engine it is!
