Flying Mercedes and fierce competition - 1999 Le Mans highlights

- There were 15 full-factory cars bidding for Le Mans victory in 1999, more if you include a pair of Panoz. It was only fitting that this field should create one of the great races of all time on the Circuit de la Sarthe. The race quickly came down to a straight fight between BMW and Toyota. Actually, it was two races: the first was fought out by the quickest of the cars from each manufacturer; and the second, in the closing stages, between the slowest.

The Toyotas gives me so many nostalgia to when I use to play Gran Turismo
Good times 👍

Same here. GT2 and later GT3 💚 were the golden years of racing games for me.
Well, we're out of luck now, since they stopped putting their cars into games for brainless ridiculous reasons. Idiots.
@@t_wilson01 4 too.
The Gran Turismo 3 and 4 memories with these legendary cars😍
Yesss!!!
Of course 😁
And 5?
People in 1999: I wonder if any of these cars can fly
Mercedes CLR: *observe*
Lmao
Proceed to do sick 1440 flip
People in 1930: in future there's will be a flying car
1955: say no more

1999 : Toyota against bmw, Mercedes, Nissan etc... 2019: Toyota against themselves.
*Insert picture of Spider-man point to himself
Poor Porsche and Bentley
Yeah i know they went the distance but its a shame toyota got the first one when there was no other competition.
Now: toyota against Porsche, Cadillac, Ferrari, Peugeot
Now it's Toyota vs Ferrari vs Porsche
Keep making more of these videos. They are great
better than the official WEC channel
Thank you Gran Turismo series to introduce us to these beasts. Toyota GT-ONE, the 1st dude to show up. Love at first sight.
A golden era! Just look at that GT One
End of the GT1 era, and start of the Le mans prototype.
Did you buy any scaled model.
@@Orcawhale1 well to be fair toyota and mercedes were le man prototype but the rules at the time allowed that, mclaren f1 is the true last gt1 car
@@theylivewesee1674 They were prototypes, but still built after GT1 specs, and not LMP.
As for the F1, it wasn't a purpose built GT1 racer, like the 911 and CLK GTR.
Just the best road car who happend to make a great racecar aswell.
@@djorksolo8544 Dafuq are you on about?
The designer of the Enzo, is Ken Okuyama.
And the designer of the TS020 is André de Cortanze.
Toyota's sheer persistence to win this race is why they deserved 2018's victory and why they deserve to win this year's race too despite being the only realistic contenders
They won because Porsche and Audi did not enter
@@4ndyr0g3r50n isnt that what the op said ?
Meh. Toyota win on merit because they are better at engineering and I doubt the others could keep up at this point. Any simple check of road car reliability puts German manufacturers (and western manufacturers in general) way behind Asia. If you don't believe me, look up JD Power survey results 2018. In particular, German cars are overrated. Mercedes design and build their F1 cars in England because they can't win any other way. As for Le Mans, Audi only won over the years due to a lack of competition. When they had competition (Peugeot) they lost. On the other occasions, they lost in-house battles against Porsche or Bentley. Big deal. @@4ndyr0g3r50n
Andrew Rogerson porsche win because they had No luck And audi win a lot because of No competition
So what
@@4ndyr0g3r50n You're the typical stupid porsche fanboy ! Toyota in 2016 is clearly superior to Porsche, bigger engine, but lower fuel running than the smaller engine of porsche. porsche only won as every german manufacturers, because Toyota is unlucky like cursed in LeMans. 2016, the Toyota finaly restarted, and complete the last lap. In 1999 Toyota overtook BMW, but suddenly tire puncture took the victory away from them.. etc ... nobody deserves the victories in LeMans more than Toyota!
This was so weird to watch live as a kid. The CLR flying all of a sudden was wild, and I was rooting so hard for Toyota too
a lot of people cofuses the CLR (flying mercedes) with the CLK. The CLK is a GT1 car meanwhile the CLR was a LMGTP car
That was the GTP class correct?
The CLR wad the FLY whip

It's a toss up the Toyota and Mazda 767. I have a soft spot for rotary engines, especially if there are 4 of them. I think the rotary engine might be the best racing engine.
The Toyota was an aero engineers wet dream, they looked so slick, I think they should have stayed in lemans one more year. They would have won
Nah 787B is another level
@@futwizards yeah your right the loser level.... Won 1 race out of 21 races in two years of competition.... So uncompetitive and the Only race it won was from luck....... But the jdm fuckbois over hype the Mazda......at least the GT1 was very competitive.......and sorry the 917k and the mantra simcas with the lieger v12 sound better.......

Mercedes management: "This year we need to be *above* the competition!"
Engineers: Builds airplane

I absolutely loved all of these gt1 cars. Probably my favorite set of cars to have ever appeared together on a grid.
I appreciate those cars too, they bring me so many memories of when I used to play Gran Turismo.
That Viper Team Oreca that flew past the stricken #1 Toyota brings back so many GT2 memories
I remember watching the race on TV and seeing the Mercedes flipping through the air off the track and into the woods. I remember thinking: "I hope the driver is okay and lives!"
You absolutely HAVE to show that 2011 nailbiter between Audi and Peugeot!!!!!!!
Yeah fantastic year
Amazing video thank you autosport!!!
The constructor "straight away" decided to withdraw, after it had already happened to Webber. Twice. This was the third flip.
this was the race of the Century with so many works entries in the top class

Before this puncture, Katayama's car badly blocked by Team price-bscher's car(#18,BMW V12) .
Why you cut block scene?
I love these Le Mans summaries. I just wish they covered more years and were longer

those were the golden days of BMW..

The Toyota GT-One TS020, one of the greatest"What Ifs" in 24H of Le Mans history.
The GT-One, I love this LMP 😍
The flip of the Mercedes CLK is incredible 😨
They're not gt1s. These are LM GTP, the video is wrong. Mercedes had the CLR, not the CLK. The CLK is a gt1.
The Toyota GT-One is not an LMP
GT-One is a LM GTP car
Those GT-One were absolute beauty..
1899: we will have flying cars in the future!
1999:
Still the most spectacular crash I've ever seen, even in 2021
War live da, Le Mans ist das Beste.
Always thought the TS020 Toyota had a 1UZ-FE block but it's a heavily modified 3.6L from their Group C program. Still, if points were awarded for looks the TS020 would have walked away with the victory.
The best Le Mans 24h ever!
These are the best/pretty cars ever! Love this era of racing so much
Brundle didn't have a 'crash that then ended his race'. It was tyre failure.
I loved the old open top Le Mans Prototypes
The following year someone won because all the other brands left the sport
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee fast forward 20 years and the same thing is happening again

Mercedes-Benz celebrating the 44th anniversary of flying cars at Le Mans
1998 to 1999 was the best era ever!
I'd say 98 because we got the full GT1 championship that season.
2 years can't be called an era
Wrong. Gt40 vs Ferrari and 1984ish to 1991 are possibly the best
I'd say 95-99
1:04 That's Mario Kart
You mean to tell me that LM24 and WEC used to have more to it than Toyota GR #7 vs Toyota GR#8?!?!
My mind is blown.
and here we are in 2023 where Toyota repeated the History of having only 1 car left in the race and made it into the 2nd place

Looks like the TS-020 had too much downforce for the rear tires, they explode one after another.
Too much downforce?? That rear wing is tiny.
