Rear mirror would be nice too. I am lazy kind of guy, I won’t even attend to put the mirror on, as I would like to force myself turning my head for the eye contact with the Drivers. I feel safer that way. Anyway, it’s good to have you here.
I use a RearViz mirror when riding. It's a wearable mirror that you place on your forearm and adjust to the position you want based on your riding position. why not go one better and opt for a wired battery system 1 battery that handles both front and rear that you can detatch and charge elsewhere or charge it whilst connected to the bike so your not having to take the USB lights on and off the bike for bonus points you could opt for a system that charges the battery via dynamo so you always have power for your lights at night
Hi Peter, great to see you putting out videos from down under. Frank "help-my-lockring-is-stuck" here. Bromptons are generally well made and thus upgrades aren't necessary "essential"; so says the bloke that spent more on upgrades than on my Bromptons themselves. Anyway, here are 3 items (in no particular order), I would advise a new Brompton owner to look into for upgrades: 1. Hinge Clamps - agree that after-market ones work better 2. Easy Wheels (especially for non-rack models) - the stock wheels are just awful for rolling, and larger wheels also provide better clearance when wheeled around 3. Toss up between Handle-grips, Saddle or Tires - each can significantly change the comfort/feel of the ride
I added to my Brommie a telescopic expander for wheels near the seatpost. When Brommie is folded it is somewhat unstable. The folding system is build in a way that when folding it takes weight to the right side of the bike. So I extend the pair of wheels when Brommie is folded. I think this expander should come with Brompton factory delivery.
The extender is one of the great example of after market parts. Too bad they will never work on my Brompton. The extender added an extra bit of width to the eazy wheel's base, which causes me having a heel strike onto the eazy wheels all the time. I guess I will never get the benefits of that. Anyway, thanks for spending time with my video.
Just bought a Brompton yesterday (will be delivered in about a month). The first video in your vlog series really captures the mood of the present moment for so many of us. I rode my fixed gear bike for a couple of hours yesterday to get out on the road again and felt the sense of release in that first video of yours. I've been binge watching the whole series today after discovering your channel through this video. Awesome channel! I'm learning a lot and am subbed. Looking forward to getting my Brompton and exploring upgrades to it over time (I know I will want to do them as I've done that with all my bikes).
Thank you for your kind words and surely appreciate your time in watching my videos. I am very new to this, please spare some love to them. Lol. There is a shortage of Brompton everywhere now, it’s good to know you will be getting your Brompton soon. I enjoy riding my single speed Brompton (not a fixie) as well. Maybe I should just convert that into a fixie as well.
Thanks for your suggestions! I got the Brompton tool kit shortly after my Brompton purchase. I ordered a handlebar mirror and hope it will fit. My bike stand is coming soon and I will order a rear triangle protector. I have a Velcro strap that I can use; although your leather one looks awesome. The boo boo kit is a good idea and I’m thinking of getting the easy wheel and extender. I don’t have a rear rack. I want an open basket to put my groceries in but that will after wait until I upgrade my wheels.
Good grief? Has no one ever heard of Velcro straps? You can get them from dollar shops or Daiso! I even have them on my handles, so that if I need to load stuff onto my rear rack or do some simple maintenance, I strap down the brakes so the bike won't move. Velcro is the world's greatest invention! Lol!
Nice video! And nice green Brompton! I haven't seen those components before that you show in the video - could you please add links to the sources? The frame clamp is very neat and the leather strap looks classy and suits the frame ciolour very nicely. The rear suspension you show is also pretty unique. Many thanks and all the best, Rob in Switzerland
I’ve starting to watch your videos even without owning a Brompton at the moment (no stock till end 2021 and every sellers are jacking up prices online by 50-100%) thank you so much!
The clamps are definitely an annoying issue, but I’m not gonna replace them, the bike was plenty expensive as is. Should’ve been improved on the standard model years ago, but I suppose people buy m anyways so no changes keeps the price lower, sales up and the profit higher. That’s my guess. Great folder for commutes tho.
EZ clamp springs are a nifty little upgrade. Little 3d printed things that you add to the stock clamps which stops the clamp from spinning and also pushes the clamp away from the frame as you loosen. I recommend! You can buy them or print them yourself
The wheel frame strap is absolutely the most useful of these three modifications. 4th essential modification: Two chainwheels, 104 BCD and 64 BCD which enables 50T or 40T for riding on the flat, and a 22T chainwheel for climbing hills. Do you have any tips for fitting a front deraileur to this?

Hi there, may I know what’s the size of your easy wheel? Looks like there’s a lot of allowance for the suspension and it didn’t touch the ground when you tilted the bike backward. I’m thinking of getting the 6cm set but I’m not sure if it’s big enough. Thanks!
I want to upgrade the suspension block too. What is the green one you have on yours? I have heard of air suspension which seems to be adjustable. Thoughts? I am a heavier rider.
Hector, their are generally 3 types are suspension out there for the Brompton. I am making a video on the suspension block, i think it will be ready in about 2 to 3 days time. I will go through with them for you and there will be a brief installation guide there as well.
I am interested in the Matumura-Kohki Scrowave suspension block which I learned about on your channel. I gather it provides 30% more cushion and it is firmer for faster acceleration. Like your friend on Day 7 vlog, I have lower back discomfort after about an hour of riding, so this is a product I am looking for also. This was educational, thanks!
Yes, the Matumura-Kohki Scrowave suspension is the best one that I had ever tried. It must have been 6 years ago since I first trying them, I lost count on how many of them I had been recommending it to other Brompton riders.
Be careful with Swytch kit. Read the small print carefully... Brompton never used to honour their generous 7 year frame guarantee if a unit had been fitted. It classed as a "modification" a bit like a car. This original post is fairly old now. I honestly don't know what the 2022 situation is...

This does happen with the original EZ Wheels the bike comes with. There are some nice ones at eBay that are a bit narrower, and they look better as well. That can be purchased for cheap from the Far East, but they take a while to arrive.
Happens with me with the original wheels when I am wearing my low hiking shoes and have them tied a bit loosely. In that case the wheel may actually get caught in the cuff of the shoe. Extremely annoying.
Hey Peter! I noticed where the hinge clamps are, paint peels due to the contact of the hinges. Is that rust I see underneath? Does that pose a long term problem for bike maintenance? Sorry if this is a stupid question and maybe it's been addressed by other riders already, but since I've seen it first on your video, I thought I'd ask you.
Bryan, those paint that are coming off from the hinge clamp area it’s something that we can’t change. There is nothing to worry about here. The Brompton is a steel bike afterall, rust is part of the deal. Those rust that you see at the hinge area and along the inner tubing inside the frame are called surface rust. As Long as it is steel and exposed to air, you will get abit of it. So nothing to worry about. As long as they stay at surface rust kind of level anyway.
Bryan. You got me right there. I had been controlling how much I ate since day 1. I started to target for 250km per week now, hopefully the effects will start to kick in soon.
Does anyone have a link to the leather wheel frame strap he has in this video? All my searches lead to different ones. I like how clean his look while on the frame in the unfolded mode.
Great honest upgrade tips! But it is almost impossible for me to push my brompton with the seatpost up, my front wheel is always touching the ground in the folded position. Does upsizing the rear mudguard wheels help?
Sorry about the late reply. I am assuming you are either running on a e type Brompton with no fenders. If it is the case, you will need to "tilt up" the Brompton and push it from there. Larger wheels will help, but too large your Brompton will fall to the right hand side when it is folded, Try to look for some wheels which are 66mm or less in diameter.
My most essential upgrade would definitely be the Coaster wheels you can get at Home depot, you can attach it by removing the rear reflector on the back of the rack, allows for relatively easy and smooth 360 degree movement, and is way quieter than omni wheels with the added benefit of a lockable wheel for transit purposes
Great upgrades. Just seems sad that zillion dollar bikes need any upgrades or changes but I get the customization. These changes do seem somewhat essential though
I agree with the hinge clamps and the easy weheel completely. The one part which I still wish to find for my Brompton 3gear bike would be a chain ring with 46 or 48 teeth. Any idea where to get such a chain ring?
Thanks for spending time on the video. There are plenty of 46/48 teeth chainring on the world of internet. I just did a quick google with the keywords “46 teeth chainring with 130BCD” and there are plenty of them. Just make sure you are getting the standard 130BCD with 5 bolts mounting at it. Cheees.
Another great video ... I've purchased new hinge clamps and a suspension block after watching. Do you prefer a titanium or aluminium seat post? And, do you use the stock pentacle or prefer an after market one?
Darren, you are the best. The intention of the videos being made were to help people getting the right stuff and putting them to the right use. You are giving a lot of energy to going forward with it. Thanks. I will always prefer the titanium seatpost or handler bar over the aluminium version of them any time. The titanium one are just more comfortable. The green bike that you are seeing is using my own house design and made titanium seatpost, it doesn't required any penta clip. For the other bike that I am not using that seatpost, I am just using the original penta clip, it works for me just fine.
What size(diameter) is your easy wheel? Thanks. I looking for one that is high enough so the suspension block wouldn't hit the floor when we tilt it and push around.
For the price they cost, it's incredible how much they can still be upgraded or fixed.

Hi the last point happen to all super light model ?
I agree with the hinge clamps and the easy weheel completely. The one part which I still wish to find for my Brompton 3gear bike would be a chain ring with 46 or 48 teeth. Any idea where to get such a chain ring?
Thanks for spending time on the video. There are plenty of 46/48 teeth chainring on the world of internet. I just did a quick google with the keywords “46 teeth chainring with 130BCD” and there are plenty of them. Just make sure you are getting the standard 130BCD with 5 bolts mounting at it. Cheees.
@@Petrellionwheels Thanks for your quick response and keep up the good work
Pull it by the Handel bar
Where did you buy these parts
A brompton kickstand would be a very useful upgrade too, if you want to stop and take a photo of your bike but couldn't find anything to lean on.
Can you put the link or information to shop the frame strap please?
The hinge clamp design team was on vaca and the design deadline was due in 12 hours, so they got a 12 year old to knock something out rq.
Hello, may I know which suspension would you recommend?
Thank u
What size(diameter) is your easy wheel? Thanks. I looking for one that is high enough so the suspension block wouldn't hit the floor when we tilt it and push around.
Shopping this very thing myself! Those easy Wheels on the green bike look great
The seat post stopper is one of the first upgrades I’ll make. Extend the post to the exact same size every time!
