Welcome to Gaming University where we discuss the Philosophy and Literature present within Video Games. The goal is to use Science, History, Theology, and other disciplines in order to gain a greater understanding of the story found within the games we cherish. Video Games are a form of Literature just like Books and Film.
In today's video we will begin our Seven Part course on the classic from Remedy Entertainment, Alan Wake.
Lesson 1 of Alan Wake Explained will deal with the Act of Creation which is a central theme of the story. The question that I seek to answer in this lesson is what is the Template and Mechanism that facilitates Creation? We will use various examples in Science, Literature, and Theology to address this question.
Free discussion is welcome in the Comments below.

Syllabus for Lesson 01: The Sound of Creation
In this Lesson we will examine Creation in its entirety using Cymatics, C.S. Lewis, and Theology as examples. During this time it will be established how all of the examples share common attributes. The Lesson will conclude with addressing how the Template of Creation we have discussed applies to Alan Wake as a character. This concept will be further expanded upon in later Lessons.
Free discussion of the material presented is invited in this comment section.
This is a legit 'gaming' university. You sound like a real proffessor
That was the intention! Discuss great games and learn a few things along the way. Thanks for the comment!
He's the Dean!
Very rarely does one come across a channel with the first video being as good as this one. This was exceptionally insightful. As a Hindu, I particularly enjoyed Alan Wake with its themes of what exactly shapes reality and destiny. For instance, the idea of how the characters in the series are supposedly "controlled" by the story, yet they also shape the story as they are ultimately united. I see this as being similar to how Advaita Vedanta of Hinduism suggests that we all are parts of an ultimate reality, which shapes us, and we shape it. But in the end, we are all one. Just like how the story is nothing without any characters and neither are the characters meaningful without a context, our soul/consciousness and the ultimate universal consciousness is one. I believe that these panentheistic and panpsychist views are becoming more popular.
Also, the point about many theological accounts of creation involving singing was pretty interesting. In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is said to perform a dance which will end the universe before its regeneration (the Hindu view of the universe and the natue of life is that it is cyclical) by the word ॐ (which has many meanings and has deep significance for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. In a brief way, it signifies the essence of the universe. Most Indian works in Sanskrit begin and end with om. (aum/om). Lord Brahma, whom you mentioned, is the creator God, whereas Brahman is the ultimate reality. Hope you have a wonderful day and a blessed life and that your channel continues to prosper! Namaste and love from India!🙏🇮🇳☮️☮️
Thank you so much for your insight on this topic. I've only done preliminary research in some of these topics so it is great to hear from someone with much more firsthand knowledge of the material.
I forgot which physicist said it regarding the human species but he said, "We are reality creating machines." I have a hypothesis that quantum physicists are finally beginning to understand what spiritual philosophy has been trying to say all along. Just using different words.
As you can probably tell I enjoy study many theological traditions but the further east I get the more interesting and relevant I find them. Hindu and Vedic traditions have become a particular interest lately that I look forward to exploring more.
Namaste as well, peace be with you and love from America.
This is mixed so quietly that whenever an ad pops my ears get blown out
Apologies about that. I hadn't quiet gotten the hang of mastering the audio yet when my first video went up.
@@GamingUniversityUoG No worries man, I already watched through the whole Alan Wake playlist and noticed that you improved throughout. Thanks for the great content, I really hope you get more attention, you deserve it!
Mate, that voice is smooth as butter! Alan Wake's lore, universe and themes are so damn good. I think the way this video is presented and told is seriously great! Can't wait to see this series continue, keep up the good work mate :)
I appreciate it mate! I fully agree. Alan Wake is a gem and I'm curious what Remedy does with the TV show and Control when its released in a few weeks. By the way I enjoyed your retrospectives for both Alan Wake and American Nightmare when you dropped them a couple weeks back.
@@GamingUniversityUoG Oh cheers mate, appreciate the support. 100% cannot wait to see what the tv show and Control have in store. Been researching Alan Wake 2 for weeks at this point, and it's got me amped for both of these! Can't wait to see more mate
Another example of a song of creation is the music of creation in the SIlmarillion, Iluvatar the valar and the maia sing the world into existence.
I really need to dive into LotR lore. I read then when I was a kid but not the prequel books.
INSTANT subscription. I did not even remotely expect to see this get analyzed with such concepts, but I absolutely love it. Onto the next video! lol
I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying my content! I wasn't sure if there would be interest in this kind of analysis but the feedback I've received is amazing. Thanks for your support and I'll see you around!
I've been watching your channel for a week now, all of your videos about creation and about your dark side, are similar to the law of attraction, i was just searching for control lore a few weeks ago but didn't expect to find (at least to me) motivation content, thank you for giving me hope, when im a famous basketball player i will be sure to link up with you, good day.
I believe in you friend. When you make it in basketball let me know. I'll cheer you on!
Came here from Max Derat. Amazing work sir.
I really appreciate it! Thanks for stopping by. I'll thank max for sending you over. His work is phenomenal.
I first discovered these guys through their Control lectures. I played and beaten both Alan Wake and Control. Loved both games because of their stories and meta concepts. I played Alan Wake on both PC and Xbox. PC was much harder because I preferred console controls but I still managed. Control, on the other hand, I beat on the PS4.
I picked up AW on the xbox360 originally. Can only play it in PC with a controller. I'm a weirdo and am not good at using a keyboard to game.
I played this game in 2020..but still it is fresh..so deep writing. To understand it completely I came to RUclips and looking for explanation and luckily found your channel.
You did such a deep analysis I can't explain in words. Thank you for this.
Apart from this, your video editing and sound mixing is a plus..what a amazing voice you have...if Alan wake have RUclips channel..it looks like yours 👍👍😁
This story has so many layers to it. Absolutely incredible narrative and setting!
Thank you so much for your kind words! My mind tends to branch out to random places when I experience a story as you probably noticed here.
I'm glad you enjoyed!
I love this game and I love that theirs a channel that shares a philosophical perspective on Alan wake.
There is so much in Alan Wake that begs to be discussed through s philosophical lens. I'm surprised there isn't more people talking about it.
@@GamingUniversityUoG I played the game a couple months ago and it's by far my favorite horror game if not my favorite game in general. I'm so disappointed it took me 10 years to finally play a game that was so unique and refreshing. The second I heard the narration and the quotes from Steven king I was hooked. And the second the game ended I had an itch. I instantly bought both dlcs, then I played the game two more times, then I bought American Nightmare, and then finally found my self at Control. I even waited a whole day to download quantum break just to get the drops of story I could find that related to alan wake. Its such a well made universe with so much to talk about and Remedy I feel doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's funny that the day I played Alan wake for the first time was on September 14th. 1 day before dearfest lol. Anyways your doing gods work giving these games the voice that it deserves to have.
Worked my way through all your videos today and I gotta say you're my new favourite channel, the work you put in really pays off man, you've earned a subscriber, can't wait for the next video 👍
I'm so glad to have you aboard! I truly appreciate your words and am glad you enjoy!
Keep it on going man, you have so much potential! Control first big expansion it's coming out tomorrow 26/03. You should use it to promote your Channel in social media
I absolutely will! Thank you so much for the support. After TGA 2019 I used it to help promote as well when Control won Best Art Design.
I'm looking forward to The Foundation so much! I tested out some of the changes from the patch last night. Energy recharging while shield is up is amazing!
So underrated channel
I'm proud of the community we have and I'm looking forward to see it grow! Honestly, talking with all of you is the best part of this.
No, the purpose of this video is to give me something calming yet mind expanding for me to fall asleep too, I wish I could hire you to record audio book versions of my favourite series. Sadly I doubt you have either the inclination, time, or a price I can afford.
What's your favorite series out of curiosity?
Alan Wake is one of my favorite games of all time and the way you explain the story is beautiful.
Thank you so much! This game has been enormously influential for me. One of those stories I'm passionate about.
It is nostalgic coming back to this video after 4 years which at that point of time I had been in a bad position in my life where a year prior my mom passed away my second oldest brother was taking care of me & my youngest brother Adam for years at a apartment in Clovis New Mexico; at first it was good until he and my other oldest brother was bringing their friends over at the place 1 side would either get drunk and the other would be smoking stuff like weed, blunts and/or tin foils and I wanted no part it was to the point where I didn't even want to leave my own room and even if I did I didn't want to interact with my bros or with anyone else so did my young sibling but when adam started dating his girlfriend (her name is Hayley) a few years back I rarely saw him it felt like I was alone because I have dementia even now I still do after a while I honestly wanted to just give up and die but it was your content videos on Alan Wake (the game that got me invested in the horror genre) and the other Remedy Games that made this suffering of mine bearable it also reignited my faith in games again, as I am typing now I am living a apartment in Portales New Mexico with Adam & Hayley because a year ago they were working a few jobs that was enough money to move out of our old apartment and honestly I finally feel normal again, finally do stuff for once and I want to say thank you for everything Dean!
Listening to this as I fall asleep. Ur voice sound sooo peaceful.
I sing a song, and create a universe. Imagination is an amazing thing, you know.
It absolutely is. We all create worlds in out heads all the times. Mostly, they only exist there. Sometimes we can share them with others.
Absolutely fantastic video, you clearly know your stuff!! Amazing commentary and discourse. I've subbed, lets stay connected!
I appreciate it and glad you enjoyed! Absolutely. I have my media links in the banner now if you want to connect.
0:30 first time watching this video after you played over the weekend Night Springs DLC. Its not a loop. It's an spiral. 12 Monkeys. Back the beginning. Back to the source. Where the channel started
really interesting. please continue
I'm glad you found it interesting. Currently I'm about 70% through the script for part 2 but I wont finalize it for a week or so. Im planning to sit down with a psychologist to discuss the Jungian interpretation of the psyche before I sign off on it.
You have a lot of knowledge on the world .... thank you for inspiring me...
You got it! Glad I could be of assistance.
Amazing!! How did you realize those theories while playing the game? Keep it up and please analyse the other games too...
Frankly I read a lot and study a lot of random stuff. So when I get into a story I make comparisons the narrative and rules of the world with other things.
What other games would you like to see me do? I have a couple God of War videos up but I'm working on ankther big series as well as some indie stand-alone games.
@@GamingUniversityUoG I would like to see you analyse about the game ''some day you'll return''. 😁 Of course, that's my wish and I also understand if you are busy with other games. This game has five different endings and I think it'd be interesting if we see it from psychological and philosophical point of views.
@@meomo8742 I have a couple games I've been requested to do. I will add it to my list! Now that I'm trying to do a stream schedule weekly maybe we can play them that way and discuss it live.
I absolutely adore your content ❤️ thank you for your work and efforts in putting this together
Oh wow! You found my first ever video I did. Thank you! Glad you enjoy the work we do here
@@GamingUniversityUoG You have no idea how much I most likely annoy people in gaming communities recommending your videos! 😆❤️ the first one that got me hooked was the one about Control, the nature of sound and the concept for Polaris and The Hiss. I’m very grateful for having found your content! Can’t wait to watch whatever you have in store for AW2! I’m almost finishing the game 🙂
Old Gods had the gift of music as a source of creation ...I see
A lot of theologies thought of sound and music a basis for things. That's why having the Old Gods of Asgards musicians makes perfect literary sense.
@@GamingUniversityUoG I am going to play it again... this game no doubt is a masterpiece
Great video my dude, keep it up
I appreciate it man! I'm aiming to wrap up the next video this weekend so it should be dropping soon.
Thank you
You got it!
So I can't afford alan wake because like a dragon ultimate right? But I'm going to experience "Remedy" through youse guys. Time to binge 😉👌🇺🇸
Amazing
Thanks! At the time of making this I had no clue how to use a video editor. All in all I'm happy with how it turned out.
Nice video, bro!
I'm glad you enjoyed! This is going to be a 7 part series so stick around for more.
@@GamingUniversityUoG I certainly will! When will the next video be uploaded?
I'm about halfway through writing the script for part 2. Hopefully within a few weeks I will have It ready for release.
@@GamingUniversityUoG No hurry, thanks for the reply :)
🤯
My god has this aged well after aw2
0:28 there is no spoon.
hi from the future spiral.
Hello!
Holy shit did the movement in this game suck and the gameplay get repetitive. Alan couldn't jump more than 3 inches, the platform jumps were garbage and his asthma running +the taken were so stale in types(there was 4: chainsaw, weak ones, fat ones and fast ones) with no backstory to them(who were they? how did they turn into "ghost zombies"? what was their plan, world domination?). But my biggest issues was how you could only have the shotgun or rifle, why not both? They had two types of "grenades" and the weapon resets in each chapter. But besides the issues the game was alright in story, does it need a sequel? Eh not necessarily.
Also your mic is super soft, very soft is volume.
I think Remedy tries to spend more time in how the story unfolds and the universe you're playing in rather than the gameplay aspects. I agree Alan needs to spend more time in the gym and less brooding about everything! The Taken do have some backstory if you go through the live action prequel, The Alan Wake files, as well as some of the manuscript pages. The main narrative itself doesn't address it as clearly as it should though.
I'm intentionally trying to talk softly in this. In your opinion should I add more gain in my voice as compared to the background music?
@@GamingUniversityUoG Absolutely, if I have to turn up my speakers there is not enough volume in the video
Sounds good. Thanks for the input. I'm hoping to wrap up part 2 this weekend so I will keep that in mind. Cheers!
I really hope the rest of these videos actually focus on your subject, rather than getting lost entirely in the philosophy. The philosophy was neat but did not need this in depth of a discussion given that the subject matter of the lecture showed up for less than 3 minutes of the total runtime
