Reclaiming Sinjar: Pushing Back the Islamic State

  • Islamic State (IS) fighters swept into the Iraqi city of Sinjar in August 2014, forcing Kurdish peshmerga forces to retreat. The city, primarily made up of Yazidis, a religious minority with roots going back thousands of years in the region, was soon overran with IS militants. They then set about terrorizing the Yazidis, who they see as apostates and devil worshippers who need to be cleansed.
    Tens of thousands of people fled, with many ending up on in dire straits on nearby Mount Sinjar, creating an urgent humanitarian situation that led to US President Barack Obama ordering American jets to bomb IS for the first time. Thousands of Yazidis were killed by IS, with women being raped and enslaved to be sold as property. Mass graves are still being discovered.
    Kurdish militias have battled for Sinjar since then without much progress. And up until now the city has remained under IS control.
    Over the course of two days in mid-November, VICE News embedded with peshmerga forces as they retook the city in a massive push involving 7,500 troops, with the hopes of cutting off the resupply routes between IS territory in Syria and Iraq. Snaking through the desert in large convoys with heavy artillery and tanks, and backed by international coalition air strikes, they faced little resistance besides snipers, mortars, and IEDs as IS fled and the city was taken back.

      Alex Whitehurst I did, i didnt see any ford, maybe missed it. But ye let me be clear that Toyota,Nissan,BMW and Chevrolet are the most common cars. You rarely see a ford and GMC's are mainly used as security vehicles. The truck category is probably only nissan and toyota for two simple reasons! they are a hard working car that always perform! very good cars with gr8 quality. Nissan Avalanche is probably the most favored one i would say.

      LügenpresseWatch Pakistan doesn't pay attention to sects and religions like the arabs, yazidis and kurds do. Pakistan has a very large army who is not sect divided at all. If Pakistan was to fall (God Forbid) it wouldve been a long time ago. This what you see here is just lack of education, years upon years of frustration and bad blood that goes way back even before Islam. Pakistan actually has a brain who doesn't let other countries fight their wars for them. No matter how right a foreigner is people from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya will not accept them because they are not their own even if they are right. Western Media will show Pakistan even more destroyed than Iraq or other war torn countries. You should visit mate, and see for yourself how much truth you saw in the news. I haven't been there in a couple of years myself though. Also the terrorists fighting in north western part of Pakistan (who have been defeated) are afghans, uzbek, krygiz etc mostly foreign because of the very porous border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. All these countries need is re education, true re education and things will be fine.

      This doc doesn't do justice to 150 PKK fighters who lost their life defending Shingal and Yezidis.It distorts the reality & the sacrifices of these heroes portaying solely as a victory of the nepotist,ally of Erdogan Barzani and KDP.
      .
      In of the past VICE dispatches,there was a Yazidi local saying ''at if it wasn't PKK there wouldn't be a Yazidi alive right now.''
      Some facts that justify these words :
      THE WITHDRAWL OF PESHMERGA.
      On the morning of 3 August, ISIL forces captured the city of Sinjar[13] as well as the Sinjar area.[23] As ISIL attacked Sinjar and neighboring cities, 250 men Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga forces in Sinjar withdrew in the night from those cities, leaving the civilians behind without warning.[4] ISIL then destroyed a Shiite Zainab shrine in Sinjar, executed resisters, and demanded the residents to swear allegiance or be killed.[13]
      PKK/YPG TO THE RESCUE
      Between 9[19] and 11 August,[53] a safe corridor was established from the mountain enabling 10,000 people to evacuate on the first day.[19] Kurdish fighters from Turkey (PKK) entered the Sinjar Mountains with trucks and tractors to carry out the sick and elderly into Syria via a path that was cleared by Syrian Kurdish militants (YPG). According to Dr. Salim Hassan, a professor at the University of Sulaymaniyah and spokesman of the uprooted Yazidis, the PKK and YPG enabled an estimated 35,000 of the initially 50,000 trapped Yazidis to escape into Syria
      Don't get me wrong peshmerga are heroes,the leadership of Peshmerga the KDP party and Barzani is the problem they made an alliance with Erdogan,the Erdogan who attacks Rojava and YPG and PKK bases.There isn't any logic when you deem as enemies brothers Kurds and ally with the devil and mass murderer of Kurds named Erdogan.

      Not sure if it was the Sykes-Picot BS but lines drawn on maps around 1920, with no thoughts to the ethnic and religious diversity, screwed the Kurds over big time. They have been forced to live and bow to the authority of Turks, Persians, Syrians and Arabs. Look up the Anfal campaign. World wide accepted as genocide by saddam and his thug army. Halabja was brutal. I watched a video of Kurds entering post attack and was deeply disturbed. I don't have time to go into Kurdish experience in the other 3 lovely nations.

      +The Victory Revelations So, have you filed the paperwork to become their new combat cameraman? JK, I'm not being antagonistic, just pragmatic. TBH, I doubt even the friendly forces would want anyone without a gun or med-kit anywhere near the frontlines, seriously, think about it. Would you want some reporter getting in the way of your operation and either giving away your plans or position, or getting themselves killed by fire from either side?
      I used to thirst for action and intense imagery captured by frontline photogs, but after the years of knowing all of the actual pain and sacrifice that is necessary to get such images, I am happy just to see the positive results of a successful campaign. You mind and body will thank you once you're my age, because the old saying "you are what you eat" is true in more ways than one...Aloha.

      +letreason reign apparently you have never read the Quran, it says multiple times to wage wars against non believers, to strike off their heads, to kill anyone who does not convert. Right there in bold print for anyone to read.
      Also have you noticed, anywhere in the world that Islam touches, it turns into a gigantic warzone of death, suicde bombers, and terrorists? But according to you thats just a coincidence right?
      Islam is a stone age religion that was formed by a middle eastern warlord who enjoyed killing people who did not beleive in "Allah". There are hundreds if not thousands of religions on this planet, and non bring as much war and suffering as Islam. Open your eyes.

      +PortableBacon dumbass typical misconception red the whole quran it say to kill disbelievers that make war with you.
      Islam touches, it turns into a gigantic war-zone of death, suicide bombers, and terrorists? no many Muslim nations are peaceful and stable.

    • @aluisious
      @aluisious 8 лет назад +2

      +letreason reign ISIS represents Islam, which is a brutal religion demanding the violent subjugation of all non-believers. If you aren't an idiot, look to the life of Mohammad as the prime example. ISIS is following the textbook.
      As for *Muslims,* most believers of all religions are just normal people, of course. Christianity is pretty whacky but no one takes it seriously, or they'd sell their possessions and live on the streets proclaiming the gospel.
      I don't really feel bad for Muslims being associated with ISIS. The solution is simple, drop the brutal religion and approach life with intelligence and humanity.

    • @willmyersw511
      @willmyersw511 8 лет назад

      +Gilgamesh its arabs who hate kurds so to speak as kurds can be muslims but kurds arent arabic so theyre hated because theyre diffrent basically

    • @Hephaestion96
      @Hephaestion96 8 лет назад

      +Gilgamesh It's not Muslims that hate Kurds, most Kurds are Muslims themselves. It's just the Arabs living with the Kurds and the south-eastern Turks that don't like them. The issue is one of ethnicity, they do not want to allow the Kurds to have a nation of their own.

    In order to achieve an independent state, Kurds will need to learn to stand as one and not act as partisan loyalists of Barzani, Talabani, and Öcalan.

    Considering that the Kurds have been stateless and oppressed for so long, it is surprising that they haven't turned to radicalism as a solution.
