A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq.
The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons.
When the peshmerga captured Iraq's strategic junction of Keske in January 2015, they cut the main IS supply line between their strongholds of Mosul and Raqqa.
In the conclusion to our three-part series, VICE News follows legendary peshmerga colonel Abu Rish as he defends a vital base overlooking the junction from against any potential IS counterattack.

I find it ironic how the Kurds hold their positions and in some places actually advance despite the lack of ammo and heavy weapons and despite the struggle they're facing yet the Iraqi army entirely equipped with tons of US stuff are losing everywhere. It shows there's only one side willing to fight , give the peshmerga thousands of humvee and all the nice toys the Iraqi army received and it'll be a matter of days before they reconquer the whole country

xutianyangkevin How so? Their position is already known. The smoke creates an obstacle for the jet fighters to exactly pin point where they are. Making their attacks less effective/precise.
That's why you should do it the good ole fashioned way----carpet bomb
Its to provide cover from the IR imaging cameras that drones and jets use to conduct airstrikes. Thing is it wouldnt be very effective at all since the IR cameras can see past the smoke. The only likely place a human IR reading would go undetected is right next to the fire since the fires reading would conceal a humans reading. Overall, not very effective.
