Night Operation Against the Islamic State: The Battle for Rojava (Dispatch 2)

  • The northeastern city of Hasakah is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse in Syria. Its population of Kurds, Sunni Arabs, and Christians was until recently politically divided between equal zones of Kurdish and Assad regime control. Immediately following the fall of the strategic border town of Tal Abyad from Islamic State (IS) fighters to Kurdish YPG forces in June, however, IS hit back with a sudden shock offensive on the regime-held half of Hasakah, causing regime forces to crumble in a matter of days.
    As the Syrian army and loyalist militias relinquished control to IS, the YPG entered the battle, first encircling IS positions and then launching a ground offensive supported by pounding coalition airstrikes. Despite IS using their elite forces in the offensive, the combination of airstrikes and YPG ground troops proved too much and IS fled its recent gains in the city, leaving behind only ruined buildings and mangled bodies.
    VICE News followed a YPG detachment on a night operation, providing support from Hasakah's Red Villas district to advancing Kurdish forces against IS fighters trying to defend the strategic al-Zuhor neighborhood, under waves of constant airstrikes from both the coalition and the Syrian regime's air force.

      @@jinxxintraffic The SDF is not mostly Kurdish, the PKK/YPG is mostly Kurdish. Kurds are recruited to fight ISIS under the name of compulsory military service, or by promising money to young people without money, or by making deals with tribes. Kurds mostly carry out attacks against Turkey. For example, more than 90 percent of those killed in Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor operations are Arabs. There are not many Kurds in Syria anyway, around 7 percent. Most of them are PKK militants from Turkey and Qandil.

Though we pay them to keep our own citizens in their Daesh jails where we don't have to think about them. They were able to defeat Daesh because the West gave them air superiority. Now that Turkey (a NATO member) has air superiority over them instead, Turkey could succeeded where Daesh failed - and have stolen control of much of their territory. Take fascist Turkey's bombs out of the sky and all their soldiers and jihadi militias would run away like the cowards they are. Rojava would be free again in two weeks.

    • @SuperSilkyJohnson

    Ιts a slow war isnt it? Use cycle movements to encircle them and cut them off from retreat or supplies. But you need numbers for that and supplies..

    • @MeLexdy
      @MeLexdy 8 лет назад

      collin ohlinger meh you need precision for that... expect friendly fire...
      But yeah since they obviously have no anti air support ,bombings should be no1 priority while in combat...
      Maybe force them to retreat and bomb the positions.

    While watching this, it really hit home to me, just how bad the decisions that were made by both the GW Bush admin and the Obama admin actually were and are today.
    First off, look at these guys fight. They actually know how to shoot/ advance and take over positions. Such a contrast from the iraqi and afghani forces that just run away and spray their guns into the air. How misguided was the US to not back the Kurds from the VERY BEGINNING? And now we have screwed them with the recent deal with Turkey. I am completely disgusted by both admins.

    What I think is worrisome is what we do after the war? America invaded Iraq and they didn't have a plan about what they would do after they won. And that went really well

    • @jebril
      @jebril 8 лет назад

      ***** It was nothing close to what it is now, the people Saddam killed pale in comparison to what's happened since he's been killed and the US gave Iraq "democracy", in no way of any kind has Iraq actually gotten better. It's ten times worse than when before the US invaded Iraq.

    • @jebril
      @jebril 8 лет назад

      ***** Well you gotta think man, the majority of people aren't really assholes there it's just that the assholes happen to be supported by third parties and have weapons because they have shown the incentive to kill. The majority of people are probably stuck in the crossfire and either pick one of many sides or end up dying in the crossfire. If you were in the same situation I doubt you'd want random people on the internet saying you deserve to die in a shithole.
