In Iraqi Kurdistan, Vice's Ben Anderson met those involved in the fight from the frontline to the Kurd's former guerrilla president to ask why the group recently voted for independence and what hopes they have for achieving a state of their own.

That ending quote is rather powerful.
"When a people tell you "I want independence," by what logic is the correct response to go annihilate them? It's an existential battle for survival. They've killed and exiled civilians, tens of thousands of people. That's all not a crime, but a nation saying they want independence, is."

We wanted to stay and help the Kurds establish their own country, and our elected politicians also wanted to do this. Trump should not have had the authority to pull our US forces out of Syria. Our politicians in Washington and our US military are also pissed at Trump for doing this and betraying our friends. The Kurds are the heroes of the world, because you people are the ones that defeated Isis. You deserve to have your own country and govern yourselves.

Saman Hasani if trump was starting a war then congress could do something to stop it but since he’s just pulling our troops out they have no power over that decision since the president is the commander in chief of the armed forces. Personally I think it’s bullshit that is too much power in the hands of one person. Trump is ignoring his generals, his soldiers, the American people, politicians from both parties, etc... who are all telling him this is a terrible idea. Americans are tired of the endless war in the Middle East and we want to leave but bailing on our allies like that isn’t ok

@@brantley2171 If you want to be a world power, you have to act as a world power.
Europe isnt a world power. The US is. Right now the US has shown the world that it doesnt care about its allies. Trust me, the way this has played out scares countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia a lot. They need the US.
Anyway, just now the US gave away its power in Syria because Trump wants to win the election. And what do we see? Russia steps in. The US just gave a big part of their power away. And what that all means is even worse: the american allies do not trust the US anymore. Trust me, Israel and the Saudi's are not happy at all.
Again: if you want to be a world power. You have to act with arrogance and power and the willingness to force your way on countries. The US did exactly that for the last 80 years. Now its foreign politics is falling apart. So yea, it is America's problem. If the US politics wont change and keeps pulling back from the world stage, it leaves behind a gap for someone else.....

If the video merely referenced that battle but in 2019, it would have at least talked about developments since late 2017 (when the Iraqis took Kirkuk after the Kurdish independence referendum), but it did not.

The only thing that prevented a total collapse of iraqi kurdistan was Masoud Barzani telling U.S. Central Command Iraqi Kurdistan was going to fall. As a result Obama was pulled out of date with his wife at a DC restaurant in order to be breifed on the catastrophe and ordered the immediate intervention of the USAF.

The plan would have been to recreate what happened with Israel but this isn't the 1940s. The Iraq Kurds are surrounded by stronger regions willing to invade against their independence. Turkey and Iraq armed with US weapons plus Iran and Syria backed by Russia are much stronger than the Arab coalition against Israel in 1948. Moreover, the US government just can't provide the ground support it once did because sending troops is bad politically and costly. Even if Israel, UK and France send air support; Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt will definitely not help because they aren't too fond of a non-Arab region in the middle east.
