He gifted himself by being the human he wanted to display on Mr. Morale. Whenever people have ever talked about Pac, they've always done it under this romanticized lens based on the interviews he did over the year before his unfortunate death. However, they never mention that Pac was just a normal guy like everyone else who didn't have the answers to life's biggest question despite the wisdom he had, and with this line Kendrick is also coming to the conclusion that Pac didn't have the answers for even himself. Kendrick has come to the realization that people can only save themselves, and that rappers, celebrities, or athletes can't and won't solve your problems because they have them of their own.

Kendrick read that poem to Tupac at the end of that record with no response from him, because he’s dead. So with DAMN. and Mr. Morale is Kendrick finding the answers for himself. Also, whenever I listen to All Eyez on Me I think to myself “Man, Tupac needed some therapy.” Sure it’s a party record, but all throughout it he’s talking about suicidal thoughts and not wanting to be reincarnated. Kendrick is doing the work Tupac didn’t do. “I may not change the world, but I’ll spark the mind that will.”

Kendrick Lamar, by far, already has one of the best hip hop catalogs of any artist to date! I could shuffle his albums over and over again and still find something in a lyric or a beat that I havent heard before. Hope to see many many more albums from this great artist!
He has transcended Rap in that he is a consummate artist.. expressing himself: speaking on and critiquing issues important to him, with love for the culture~ He needs NO VALIDATION from us AT ALL. it's crazy , I never viewed Kendrick as this perfect person or role model, just a legendary rapper with a message. he's relatable in that he's not perfect or trying to be and that's why I relate to him so much. I even share some of the same experiences and have some of the same outlooks, but not always . this is how I know he's just as human as any of us .

A song that is very underrated storytelling wise by Kendrick is Good Kid on GKMC. Rap along with the lyrics by your side and you'll be astounded. Kendrick Lamar is... just an stupendous talent

My take on it is that this is his version of “4 Your Eyez Only.” Not saying it’s the same album, but it’s purpose is similar. This isn’t for everybody, except the people who need to hear it; fans or nah.
I really love that Auntie Diaries is the way it is. It's not for people that are in the know, so it makes total sense that some people are upset by the F slur in the song. The song is targeting people that aren't as aware of or supportive of Trans people, and that's why rather than expertly go into queer cultural identity, it simply humanizes the Trans people in his life, while also showing that he (and by extension the listener) can change for the better and support the people they care about so matter their past faults.
Agreed. People don’t appreciate how groundbreaking that song is; and the way he correctly genders his cousin at the end after describing how hard it was to come to terms with their gender identity is so beautiful and eloquent.

I could tell by the albums he's made from GKMC, TPAB, and DAMN! that this was gonna be inevitable. When I first heard him on “She Needs Me” he sounded like a rapper who enjoyed what he was doing, now it sounds like it's exhausting. This is because Kendrick is SIGNIFICANTLY more spiritual than Hov, Nas, Cole etc. He expresses that spirituality in his lyrics a lot. Kanye is in the same both too, being a staunch Christian. People view both of them in different light than their contemporaries because of this. I'd say Kanye is the more aggressive in that light, whereas Kendrick approaches the themes with more subtlety (Even though wearing a crown of thorns in your album cover isn't that subtle haha)

The great thing about kendrick, is he is truly humble. His conflict with his place on the pedestal extends to many other people in other genres and all walks of life. When it comes down to it, companies prop the artist up to make money, meanwhile the artist must reflect on this or be consumed by the culture they inspired. Kendrick not only was a victim to rap culture and the pursuits it brings, but he also is a man who is searching within himself and trying to make sense of the world around him. He pays attention to everything around him and he really shows that there's no use trying to deceive your audience. The money, jewelry, women, designer clothes and all that are not things that individuals need to grow and prosper. It's interesting to see Kendrick be challenged by all these things and to see where his decisions diverge from the average artist. Just wanna add, I absolutely hate how many terms RUclips makes creators bleep out.

I fell in love with Public Enemy, HipHop and music, in general, when I first heard "Fight The Power" in 1989, at 7 yrs old (one of the defining moments of my life)... that consciousness is what drew me to it in the first place, along with P.E.'s deconstruction of musical history. Back in the day, even the "gangsta" rappers like NWA were speaking on politics and social issues. In the late '90s and particularly the 2000s, mainstream HipHop became all about the club and "gettin' paid", and lost its way... thankfully, artists who grew up in the golden era brought back that raw, grimey feel in recent years, imo - beginning with Black Hippy.
Lil Wayne has a whole book where an English professor compares him with Shakespeare Jay Z has a book called Decoded Let’s not act like Kendrick is in a league of his own
Honestly loved the album, was raw and honest. Think people were expecting something much different and that’s why many people were on the fence about it. I think this album was about Kendrick trying to send a message that he doesn’t want to be as higher power juman that can solve anything and has the answers to all, but instead simply wants to be seen as human. Many people look at Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole as the role models of this generation of hip hop. In alot of ways they are they're just not perfect. They can't save the world. There's only one savior and his name is Jesus.
Problem is, ppl are seeing Kendrick as music, not an artist. Music isn't a human, an artist is, and by our standards seeing a perfect figure in non-human form can make people think he's some sort of deity. Tho his music is amazing, I would never call him a god, deity, or prophet.

It's my favorite "actual" album from him (Untitled Unmastered excluded) but I genuinely think it's extremely dated in how it sounds. I don't like that term, but that's one album I think it applies to and people never point it out. The beats are extremely of their time. Some of the synths, choruses and samples are extremely corny. A good example of what I mean that I actually really like is Swimming Pools. Those synth hits in the chorus are insanely overdramatic but I think it works just because of how tongue-in-cheek it is.
And the crazy thing is the lean heads and xannie popping mumble rapper fans had the gall to call Mr Morale & the Big Steppers "Mid", just because they lacked the IQ to understand the subject matter of the album (it's multi-layered in true Kendrick fashion, this video breaks down just one of those layers quite well.). They were only there to hear bassy beats and switched up flows as opposed to listen to the lyrical content of the album.
It's better to be absent and respected than present and hated. Kendrick Lamar prefers his artistry to speak for itself than to bombard himself with social media that would eventually drain his soul, dilute his mind and reduce his energy. Their many artists that prefer to be obscure and lead humble lives because they treasure their privacy more than making appearances. If you value your sanity you would protect your mind and live your life away from the bright lights of glitz and glamour. You can't put a price on privacy and freedom. 👊🏿

This newest album definitely wasn't what I was expecting from Kendrick but upon my first listen I got it...I get it I can't even imagine how much weight he feels on his back with all the expectations placed on him. In my opinion I don't think Kendrick expected to blow up into superstar territory I feel it's been a massive shock for him and completely turned his life on its head, not to mention the things he has had go on in his life outside the music industry of which...hasn't been great for the last decade. I think this album calls to light the complexity and ugliness it takes not only in being human but also the intense pain and wreckoning that comes with reclaiming the Self and reclaiming our humanity. Honesty, healing- is hard work.
I've never agreed with someone or other people making themselves or someone else a "spokesperson" for any group of people sense contrary to what others may tell you not everyone is the same I get Kedrick not wanting to be made into a spokesperson for a generation of people or have people treat him like he's a perfect person who can do no wrong. As for him not wanting to be put up on a pedestal in relation to his talent as a rapper I think that's a bit silly if he makes music that resonates with many people then of course people are gonna except good music from him why wouldn't they? That's something all people not just rappers have to deal with when they have a reputation for being good at what they do. Personally I think he just doesn't like the pressure but he's fine with the accolades that comes with it .
Anyone that creates art knows how difficult it becomes once expectations hit. It traps the creativity within the whole experience. It’s suffocating when people EXPECT something from you. You gotta just live life and when something beautiful happens, embrace it, but STOP demanding artists entertain you exactly how YOU want them to. Let go of who you WANT Kendrick to be and support the ever changing dope dude that actually exists today. This man has already made enough music to forever be a legend.

Kendrick Lamar, by far, already has one of the best hip hop catalogs of any artist to date! I could shuffle his albums over and over again and still find something in a lyric or a beat that I havent heard before. Hope to see many many more albums from this great artist!

One thing about Dot for me is his ability to flex without making the listener feel left out, almost as if the fact that he's rich isnt enough of a factor. To me his index of relatability remains very high based off how little the lavish lifestyle he can have impacts the feelings and situations he describes, to me at least.

it's crazy , I never viewed Kendrick as this perfect person or role model, just a legendary rapper with a message. he's relatable in that he's not perfect or trying to be and that's why I relate to him so much. I even share some of the same experiences and have some of the same outlooks, but not always . this is how I know he's just as human as any of us .
That’s why Mr. Morale is his #1 album for me, it’s just so human and relatable, nobody is perfect, people make mistakes, and people can change.

I'm so happy that I am able to live in a time to watch such a legend come up from nothing and become one of the biggest names that will ever be remembered in hip hop for years to come.
My take on it is that this is his version of “4 Your Eyez Only.” Not saying it’s the same album, but it’s purpose is similar. This isn’t for everybody, except the people who need to hear it; fans or nah.
I really love that Auntie Diaries is the way it is. It's not for people that are in the know, so it makes total sense that some people are upset by the F slur in the song. The song is targeting people that aren't as aware of or supportive of Trans people, and that's why rather than expertly go into queer cultural identity, it simply humanizes the Trans people in his life, while also showing that he (and by extension the listener) can change for the better and support the people they care about so matter their past faults.
Agreed. People don’t appreciate how groundbreaking that song is; and the way he correctly genders his cousin at the end after describing how hard it was to come to terms with their gender identity is so beautiful and eloquent.

I could tell by the albums he's made from GKMC, TPAB, and DAMN! that this was gonna be inevitable. When I first heard him on “She Needs Me” he sounded like a rapper who enjoyed what he was doing, now it sounds like it's exhausting. I can tell he hates rapping fast all the time or that he can't just be spontaneous as Drake or Kanye, he's also exhausted with feeling like nothing is changing for the better in society which also puts more of a burden on him to address it all.

This is because Kendrick is SIGNIFICANTLY more spiritual than Hov, Nas, Cole etc. He expresses that spirituality in his lyrics a lot. Kanye is in the same both too, being a staunch Christian. People view both of them in different light than their contemporaries because of this. I'd say Kanye is the more aggressive in that light, whereas Kendrick approaches the themes with more subtlety (Even though wearing a crown of thorns in your album cover isn't that subtle haha)

The great thing about kendrick, is he is truly humble. His conflict with his place on the pedestal extends to many other people in other genres and all walks of life. When it comes down to it, companies prop the artist up to make money, meanwhile the artist must reflect on this or be consumed by the culture they inspired. Kendrick not only was a victim to rap culture and the pursuits it brings, but he also is a man who is searching within himself and trying to make sense of the world around him. He pays attention to everything around him and he really shows that there's no use trying to deceive your audience. The money, jewelry, women, designer clothes and all that are not things that individuals need to grow and prosper. It's interesting to see Kendrick be challenged by all these things and to see where his decisions diverge from the average artist.

Kendrick is great because he’s conscious but the white folk act like he’s the one and only. Hip hop is rooted deeply in that level of consciousness. Hip hop is now the most popular genre becoming a commodity to be consumed rather than a true reflection of the art. Not to say that we don’t love to dance but to pretend k dot is the only conscious part of hip hop worthy of acknowledgement from academics just show how little they cared about hip hop. Fr, fr! I fell in love with Public Enemy, HipHop and music, in general, when I first heard "Fight The Power" in 1989, at 7 yrs old (one of the defining moments of my life)... that consciousness is what drew me to it in the first place, along with P.E.'s deconstruction of musical history.
Back in the day, even the "gangsta" rappers like NWA were speaking on politics and social issues. In the late '90s and particularly the 2000s, mainstream HipHop became all about the club and "gettin' paid", and lost its way... thankfully, artists who grew up in the golden era brought back that raw, grimey feel in recent years, imo - beginning with Black Hippy.

Honestly loved the album, was raw and honest. Think people were expecting something much different and that’s why many people were on the fence about it. I think this album was about Kendrick trying to send a message that he doesn’t want to be as higher power juman that can solve anything and has the answers to all, but instead simply wants to be seen as human. Essentially saying He shouldn’t be forced to be a savior or spokesperson for what society has turned into today.

Many people look at Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole as the role models of this generation of hip hop. In alot of ways they are they're just not perfect. They can't save the world. There's only one savior and his name is Jesus.

It's my favorite "actual" album from him (Untitled Unmastered excluded) but I genuinely think it's extremely dated in how it sounds. I don't like that term, but that's one album I think it applies to and people never point it out. The beats are extremely of their time. Some of the synths, choruses and samples are extremely corny. A good example of what I mean that I actually really like is Swimming Pools. Those synth hits in the chorus are insanely overdramatic but I think it works just because of how tongue-in-cheek it is.

They were only there to hear bassy beats and switched up flows as opposed to listen to the lyrical content of the album.

I never viewed Kendrick as a savior or as like a higher being if you genuinely have listened to his music over the years he has plainly said plenty of times he is just a normal guy. This newest album definitely wasn't what I was expecting from Kendrick but upon my first listen I got it...I get it I can't even imagine how much weight he feels on his back with all the expectations placed on him. In my opinion I don't think Kendrick expected to blow up into superstar territory I feel it's been a massive shock for him and completely turned his life on its head, not to mention the things he has had go on in his life outside the music industry of which...hasn't been great for the last decade. I'm glad he made this album it just cements Kendrick as an honest dude love him or hate him, he just wants to do what's best for himself and if someone doesn't get it...they probably haven't dealt with mental illness.

I think Kendrick is reminding not just us, but himself that he is human. I think this album calls to light the complexity and ugliness it takes not only in being human but also the intense pain and wreckoning that comes with reclaiming the Self and reclaiming our humanity. Honesty, healing- is hard work.
I've never agreed with someone or other people making themselves or someone else a "spokesperson" for any group of people sense contrary to what others may tell you not everyone is the same I get Kedrick not wanting to be made into a spokesperson for a generation of people or have people treat him like he's a perfect person who can do no wrong.
As for him not wanting to be put up on a pedestal in relation to his talent as a rapper I think that's a bit silly if he makes music that resonates with many people then of course people are gonna except good music from him why wouldn't they? I'm not really an expert on this topic, but it was nice to read some interpretations on Auntie Diaries and how the song may show some "ignorance" about the best language to use on trans ppl, but at the same time, that shows that Kendrick is not doing this bc hes afraid of getting canceled or bc he "has to do it" in this era, that song is just how he genuinely feels, he's just trying to express genuine love.
