Boss RC5. Using a looper for backing tracks with a band.

- In this video I demonstrate why I chose the Boss RC5 as my backing track playback device for track and metronome playback with my band Kampala.
It's not the intended primary use of the RC5 but I've seen a few people demoing it in this capacity here on RUclips so I thought I'd show why I think it's such a great tool for this purpose. It's the ability to load tracks with the software, the ability to name the tracks and most importantly the ability to recall the preset memory slots with MIDI.
This allows me to call up the right loop for the right song from my HX Effects and so removes some massive headaches for me when starting a song at a gig. I demonstrate all of this in the video.
All in all an outstanding Looper that does this task particularly well.

And yes it’s a game changer. I was going through our set with my band last night at our rehearsal room. I have a different peda there for doing this (a digitech Jamman stereo) which was my solution before the RC5. It doesn’t have midi. So before each song I had to look at the list on the wall to see what number the next song was. It was a pain. I got it wrong twice!. It’s the midi functionality with the HX effects song patches that makes this setup so unbeatable live. I just love it.

Yep this is awesome I've been doing this for about a year now. Just this week I got the RC 500. Adding this will give me three total tracks. This way I can control the volume of each track on the fly. Instead of having to go back and remix your track and reloaded into the rc5. Connect to rc500 to the rc5 through the midi.
I'm basically in a three-piece as well. We basically use it for bass tracks, any keyboards and sound effects, and then a click.
Signal chain is RC 500 left and right out, one goes to backline, one goes to FOH. RC 5 goes to drummers IEM.
RC 500 is the master rc5 is the slave. Join them with a TRS MIDI. Both fit perfectly in the boss BCB 30X. It's perfectly on a music stand right next the floor tom.
This route makes it possible to do away with a laptop or tablet running your backing tracks. Way more robust and reliable. But I would recommend downloading A4 track app for your tablet and putting all your tracks on there as well. Just in case your drummer has has Fred Flintstone thumbs and factory reset something stupid. That way you can definitely get through the show or rehearsal. Not like I've had that happen Dave you know who you are.😂
This is interesting. If you are running bass live could you run it on its own track on the RC500 and run it out to a bass amp onstage?
Also we already have all our tracks on a phone with the show one app. Rey good app. Only on IOS though.

That's exactly right. They're going from the RC to a direct box. One goes to the bass backline amplifier, and one goes to FOH. Set the RC 5 for your click track which goes to my drummers IEM rig. RC 500 and rc5 are linked through midi and synced up. Program the buttons on the RC 500 for play stop. And the other two for up and down through the track list. This way you don't have to keep going back and forth remixing multi-tracks that are boiled down to one coming out of the rc5. Doing it this way I can put bass tracks on one. And all the other sound effects and whatnot on another track.
I would say about 95% of my tracks are coming from karaoke version. And needless to say from different bands and what not, not every Bass track is leveled at the same volume. RC 500 has two sliders ride on the top for each track. Super simple on the fly adjustment with the volume. No more glitchy ass tablets or laptops that are unreliable. There's another awesome product out there. You might want to check out it is called B-Beat. The BB unit has six outfits for separate tracks. Can control your effects pedals through MIDI and it will play videos and sink as well. Whatever you use good luck.

Still relevant today my friend! I use a RC300, FS6 foot pedal to change tracks zoom zoom ms70cdr for effects and it works 100percent! 2 ffot buttons to press and done. Thanks for your very professional vid post

Cheers for the explanation and have just bought a RC-5. Me thinks what I want it to do for me should be easy, I am a hobby musician that plays the odd Open Mic and love covering my favorite old Neil Young songs. Until now I could only choose songs that would work with one Acoustic guitar but recently I bought the Digibox Band Creator Looper which puts Bass & Drums to the Rhythm guitar part and all that was missing was a simple small portable device that would go between me and the venue mixer, kick start the song, play and sing along but now be able to add the Guitar solo parts. You know how it is at Open Mics when your called up you (and whoever is running the mixer) doesn't want a long interlude while you have to reroute or rewire leads just for your 2 or 3 songs and its so complicated your head is concentrating more and worrying more on the setup than just actually looking forwards to playing the song. What I haven't quite yet figured out is the RC-5 playing the backing track to the P.A. is all good and fine but its only my Yamaha TH32 Wireless Modeling Amp that gives me that Neil Young 70s Guitar sound that you would find on Danger Bird & Cortez the Killer from the Zuma album. Am trying to visualize what I need to do and I suspect I need to bring that Amp with me and be playing through it for Rythem & Solos while the RC-5 provides the backing Track to the P.A. I think there is still no way round me having to bring the Yamaha and plonk it down for my non backing track parts but its fully portable and its internal battery lasts easily for up to 15 4 minute songs. The vocals will be handled by the Mic that is already onstage provided by the venue so that part is all taken care of. Still if you do read this post and you were doing what I want to do would you be doing it differently and how?. maybe there is a different better way as a solo player to play along to his backing track at an Open Mic when the one constraint is that he can only get the guitar sound he needs from the Amp he brings along with him. Hey. I love technical challenges like this so happy to help if I can. So a few things I’m confused about first of all:
1. Are you playing electric or acoustic?
2. Is your Yamaha amp miced, DI’d or just using the onboard speaker
3. Are you using the band creator and the RC5 or f so why? What are both doing?
Interesting approach, nice one! We re actually a two piece band (guitar + synth and voice) and I'm actually loading my ezdrummer drum tracks and bass to the looper. Maybe a bit easier cause we have the drummer in the... looper.
Hey. Thx for the comment. Yeah I can see how that would work. To be honest the thing that makes this work so well for me is the midi capability. The t means I only have to call up the patch on the HX and it’s ready to go. That’s the game changer for me

I'm also lead vocal and guitar in a 3 piece and used to use rc300 to start click (not tracks) to a drummer. We play a resident gig in an Irish pub every Saturday. Using all direct instruments into the pa.
The way I work at the moment is I use band helper (a phone app) to navigate the song via midi controller.
The rc300 would be programmed with tempo imprinted inside its patch.
The bass player in the band plays bass on keys with left hand and does all the synth and piano parts on his right hand and also shares lead vocal with me so he definitely has his hands full literally. So Bcs of this I'd like to introduce tracks for some complex songs with your method with an rc5 in the future.
The rc5 is also so much more compact and does do midi sync both ways unlike the rc300. The rc5 from my understanding also sounds a lot better?

I want to make the backing tracks go from my RC5 to the PA, but have my HX effects go to my amp (it not having amp cabs sims etc)...Are yours on two separate loops/tracks (for want of a better word) or is your HX also going direct to the PA?.....thanks BTW.....many of your vids have been super helpful (and costly !! ). 🤣
Hey. That’s actually exactly what I’m doing. The RC5 Goes straight to the PA. Has nothing to do with the guitar chain but tis just on the same board. It sends the click and tracks to the PA and the click goes to FOH and the click goes to the drummers in ears. Works a treat!!

I originaly thought about connecting the MIDI Out of the RC5 to the MIDI IN of my pedal board (Boss GX100). Ah OK. That’s straightforwardl. On the GX 100 plug a Pid I cable from the MIDI out to the MIDI in on the RC5. Reference the manual to see how to set the MIDI channel on the RC5. (By default I think it’s set to OMNI so you may not need to do this). By default when you select patch 1A on the GX100 It should automatically pull up patch 1 or 2 on the RC5

Great video! Do I need to use TRS jack if going straight into the PA? I have a JBL prx one that Ill be using for acoustic stuff that I want to add backing tracks to. So would the setup be: click panned left, out of output B, into a headphone amp using a TRS 1/4 inch? Im assuming that would take a hard panned click track and allow me to listen to it in both ears if I wanted (sometimes I alternate which ear i have monitoring click)? And then a TRS 1/4 inch out to the PA from output A? Or would regular 1/4 inch cables work just fine?
Hey man. I suppose when you think about it the click output is one half of a stereo signal going to one Jack so it’s just sending a moni signal out. If you plug it into a mono source it should give you the same thing g on right and left. The output won’t see TRS as far as I know.
Great videos thanks. I am also beginning to use the RC 5 for backing tracks. But I’m having issues with volume. The output from the RC 5 is really loud and I have to turn the loop level way down. Is there an optimum level I should use in the DAW while bouncing from logic.

This is great! Thank you for your explanations in this video. I have a question, can you change the tempo while your backing track is playing? What happens to the sound, does it warp in the same scale, or does it change its pitch? I mean, in the case that you have the RC5 as tempo slave and you change the tempo with another device. Have you tried this? Thank you again!
Hey Jorge. Thx for the comment. This is an Interesting one. Somehow recently the RC5 started somehow time stretching my samples to a tempo it was assigning internally. I do t know where it was getting the tempo and I dont know why It decided to time stretch them but it was only a tiny amount like 2-5 BPM. As a result it started stuttering the samples so moving them in and off it of time by leaving tiny gaps of silence in between laying them. Kinda like a really subtle tremolo effect. I removed all the samples, did a factory reset and put them back in again and it worked perfectly. So my conclusion is it can change the tempo but it doesn’t do it flawlessly

Great! How or what cabel do you connect the RC-5 to the Main? Like... is it a Mono Backing Track what people hear in the front?

Hey Paul. Sorry for the late reply. Was in Germany recording a record with my band. So I don’t actually run it in my guitar signal chain at all. The samples go through the PA and the click goes to the drummers in ears.
It actually has nothing to do with the guitar signal at all. The reason it’s in my board is so I can pull up the right track for each song via midi from my pedalboard when I select that songs patch.

Hi. Thanks for posting the video. Sounds awesome and it's exactly what I've been looking for. The HX controls via MIDI the track of the RC5 you've loaded via the PC, correct? But how do you then send the (say) left track with the click to the drummer and the rest through the right to the front end of the band with the in-ear devices? I think you mentioned something like "iBox". Is that the name of the device? What model ar those? (The ones saying "click" and "tracks"). Again, a million thanks for posting. Cheers!
Hey. Thx for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. So all those two black boxes are are Jack extenders. Literally an input and an output as the outputs on the side of the RC5
are inaccessible on that board. What you need is a stereo or dual DI box or two separate DI boxes. Then you just take an XLR from the DI box to the pa for the tracks and the drummer’s ears for the click.

Good day sir! My band is also a 3 piece (guitars, synths and vocals- no drums), I just picked up an rc 5 to run the backing tracks which consist of drums and additional synths. I'm afraid of going mono click and mono everything else as it may make everything sound off as many of the studio synth and drums do have significant panning. Is the rc5 still the way for us to go? I'd rather not have a laptop.

Hey Steve. So I originally had that concern and as a result I bought a digitech jamman stereo. It has left and right out and a separate rhythm output for the click. It works a treat but there’s no MIDI so you have to order it and always stick to that set or memorise the locations of all songs. Neither is really ideal. The MIDI functionality with the HX effects instantly gets rid of that problem. But obviously it’s only if you are using a multi effects with MIDI out and using a preset per song.
HOWEVER, I didn’t know this until a few years ago but most venues (in Ireland and the UK anyway) run their PA in mono!!!
So using stereo loops is a mute point. Which actually makes sense when you think about it as it means you’d get an uneven balance depending on where you are standing in the room.
This setup works absolutely perfectly. I’ll be sticking with it end of.

Hi, I'm new to the RC-5 today. I need it to playing backing tracks with a live trio, except my drummer doesn't want to listen to click, only a count off. So, there's bound to be some flex in band tempo along the course of a tune. I've loaded tracks that have set tempos to them, which are written to the file. I'm having a problem with the tempo part of each memory not being the tempo I saved into the location before loading the song. Let's say one of the tunes is at 112 bpm. When I look at the tempo on the RC-5, it says it's at 112 bpm. But the tempo view is off to the file groove by 15-16bpm. If I use tap tempo while playing along with it, it makes the tempo drop down the 15-16ish bpm I spoke of, which in turn makes the song slow playing back - as if the real tempo of the RC-5 was 127-128ish.
I rendered the file without tempo also, no difference. I need some help to sort how to make the RC-5 tempo locked to the track, so that minor tapped in variation won't sink the tempo ship, if you will.
Here's a link to a clip of the song, my keyboard track, and a click from my DAW to show it's tightness. If you know the tempo of a created song, I think this'll hold true for any song, actually. If someone can try it with a f of their own or D/L this one (tempo is 112) , and load it into their RC-5 to see what I'm talking about when tapping in the same groove, and maybe see what I'm not seeing to get me past this. Hey John. Ok so I don’t think I’m gonna be able to help here unfortunately. I don’t use the tempo in the RC5 as you eluded to before. However I have experienced the RC5 changing the tempo on my tracks. When it did start happening I deleted everything g and did a factory reset and it hasn’t happened since.
I was a stress this is just my personal opinion now, but have you tried tapping in tempo to match the drums speeding up and down. Sounds like an absolute recipe for disaster to me!!
Ive got the Rc5 and the 2 button Foot switch ( up /Stop which is my setup mainly using the internal Drum machine)and a GR 55 Synth, this was useful info, I dont know if my setup can work the same? without the Patch box you've got here
Hey David. Not exactly sure what you are asking. Do you want to use the rc5 solely as a drum machine?
@@TheGuitarEffect well, yes and no, I generally play the Guitar straight in to the GR 55 ( 13 pin out on Guitar) then run the Gr55 left and right into Rc5, left and right in, but that's the issue, with my 2 button foot switch( current setting) up for left /stop for right but if say I want to play a song at say 20 on Rc5 having past it at say 28, any loops I've saved for any patches, there's no way of checking before ( hence my question about the Patch/bank box you're using. which leads to the ultimate question, is it possible to record whole songs on the Rc5, ie a bass line ( not a loop) and say a Rhodes piano ( not looped) sorry if that sounds vague, I'm probably expecting too much of the RC5!
Hey. Not sure I still understand exactly what you are asking but you can definitely record a song length loop on the RC5.
What I do is actually just move backing tracks I’ve recorded in my DAW over to the RC5 and play gem as individual loops that are full song length. And then I use the switch on the pedal it’s self to play and stop.

Do you know if you can save two loops separately ie verse on track 1 and chorus on track two and then go forward and back whilst on the fly . I’ve a Fs-06 . I have preset switch B to INC however when I press the B switch the looper flashes green and the looper numbers go up

Hey. Thx for the comment. So if you are using the RC5 through your amp as apart of your pedalboard the DI BOX is redundant but I use it to play backing tracks through the PA so I need to send line level signal via XLR. That’s what the DI BOX is for. Hope that helps. Thx

And then- I get needing a DI for FOH, but how is it that one is also needed for drummer's in-ears? Unless it's for physical/logistical (and not purely audio) purposes.
Hey. Technically I wouldn’t NEED a DI for running the click direct our drummer’s in ears but what I actually aimed to do was run the click to the desk and then send it back as part of his overall in ear mix because if I don’t do that he literally has just the click which I thought wouldn’t be a great playing experience. However he has actually decided he prefers just the click in his ears and he hears the band mix on stage even through the in ears. This is mainly as it makes it easier in multi band nights where we don’t have much time for setup or our own engineer.
I just use a cheap behringer dual DI box.

one question, instead of the entire song as backing track, can i import drum loops of, let's say only one bar, in the rc5 and loop them stopping and restarting the loop (according to the song). that's how i use my digitech jamman but i need to change it and was thinking about the rc5.
Hey. Thx for the comment. So are you asking can you load one drum loop in, loop it and start and stop it with the pedal. Yes absolutely. You wouldn’t need the RC5 for that either any of the cheaper ones could do it I think.

Hey. Thx for the comment. The chick is part of the actual wav that I load into the RC5. Click hard panned left and track hard panned right. Then I just send them to the two outputs. Works great

Hi, can anyone help, I've got an RC5 to play my own original guitar backing tracks, so guitar, bass and drums live with an added guitar track. With this set up how can I use a click track for the drummer to keep in time with the RC5 bits? Anyone know what's best to do?

Hey Paul. It’s actually really easy. But you’ll need a DAW. Basically get your backing track and load it into your DAW. Pan it all the way left. Then assign the click to a fader pan it all the way right. Then output a wav file with the click on the right and the track in the left. Load it into the RC5 via the usb.
Now when you hit play on the RC5 The tracks go out the left output and the tracks go out the right output. Send the tracks to the desk and the click to your drummers in ears.
You could maybe use the midi out of the RC-5 to send a time code triggering an external click generator/drum box ?

This is EXACTLY the problem I've been looking to solve! Really don't want to lug a laptop to shows, we are a 2 piece- bass and drums and I need to somehow control a few backtracks but also my bass pedals. May I ask how you connect the RC5 to the HX? I have never used one! And also is the HX separated from the fx pedals?
Hey Eleanor. I’m gonna hazard a guess with a name like that you are a fellow Irish person! If so what’s the name of your band I’d be very interested to hear ye!!
So to answer your questions.
1. RC5 is Connected to the HX effects midi output to the RC5 MIDI input with a special boss midi cable that’s standard midi at one end and 8th inch (mini headphone) Jack at the other. There a NO audio going from the HX effects to the RC5. It’s only pulling up patches on the RC5 Via midi.
The effects pedals are in effects loops on the back of the HX effects. So I can bring them in and out of the signal chain when I select different presets / snapshots on the HX effects

It definitely does sound like it, but I am not Irish, it's a middle name :) but if you are still interested in listening to my music, it is under Eleanor Kelly (this RUclips channel) and on streaming services! Planning upcoming live shows as a 2-piece to simplify things, which is why I am trying to find the best way to use backtracks without a laptop.
Hey. So you do t need the HX effects to run tracks off the RC5 at all. The ONLY reason I use this setup is because it calls up the right backing track when I select the right preset on the HX effects. Which means I only have to select the current song in the set on one device. Does that make sense.
I will also add if you don’t need to use the midi on the RC5 To cycle through presets from another device you can actually just use any of the boss loopers. The only reason I need the RC5 is it’s MIDI capability

Does it matter whether the tracks/ click goes out of output A or B? also, how do you then connect the DI boxes to the in ears?

Doesn’t matter which side you put tracks on for click and tracks. As long as you make it the same for every song.
You need an in ear monitor amp like the Behringer P1 to amplify the sound coming from the RC5 atop the inears.
I'm trying to find out the best equipment for me to be able to create some songs with drums and bass while I record the guitar lines and be able to mix it. Is it possible to use on a pedal or a program on a computer and if so which one do you recommend?

Hey. So I don’t think this would be the solution to that. Do you have a Mac or a PC? If you have a Mac I’d recommend GarageBand as a way to make music. It’s very easy to use and making music is fun and intuitive on it. You’d need an audio interface though
So I'd be able to make songs with my guitar parts with the drums and bass options in garage band?
I'm a newbie and I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me. I don't use any computers now but people are suggesting I get a Mac for all the digital guitar pedals options and recording needs.
Do you recommend a Mac in general for these types of needs?

Hey. So if you want to write songs and then produce / record full band versions of those yourself I think GarageBand on a Mac is a great way to go. It doesn’t have to be a new max either. Anything up to 5 years old will do the trick.
This is just my opinion but if you want to write songs and make full band recordings of them I’d buy a bass. The Drummer feature in Garafeband is amazing but I’m not so hit on programmed bass. It lacks feeling. It’s a much more useful songwriting skill to be able to play bass. And it’s not hard to do if you can play guitar. All the amp simulators and pedals you’ll need are available in GarageBand and their free.
So here’s what I think you’d need.
1. A Mac (GarageBand is free with every Mac)
2. An audio interface
3. A guitar
4. A bass
5. A cable
6. A microphone (if you want to add vocals)
That would be a great place to start.

Hello from France ;-) I have prepared a stereo wav files with backing tracks on the left and a click on the right. I checked with Adobe Audition and audacity and the left and right are very distinct but WITH my Boss RC3, I can hear a bit of the click with the Backing Track et vice versa. My question: is the Boss rc5 would do the job? Thanks.
Hey. I don’t have an RC3 so I can’t really answer that but there’s no cross talk between the right and left tracks in the RC5 that I have ever experienced.

This is great - what midi message do you use to tell the Boss which track to play?
Hey Cranney. Thx for the comment. It’s just a standard PC message with the number of the preset on the RC5. But to be clear it pulls up the preset only. I have to hit the RC5 to start the loop. Though I could start it too with a cc message from the HX effects.

Yes, did you change anything in the settings of the HxEffects or RC5?
No changes. The only thing I would’ve done is set the RC5 to receive on a specific midi channel and made sure to send the message to the RC5 on that specific channel.

I may have missed it….can you show what you were using for the click track?
Hey. The click track is baked into the backing track. The click is hard panned right and the track hard panned left. I then send the two signals out separately using the L and R outputs

Hey. I’ve not tried that so I don’t know. But I do know that you can start a loop with a CC message. So it’s theoretically possible
Cheers! Im receiving my es8 and rc5 shortly. Seems like a couple of viewers are asking the same question- so once i figure out how to do it ill post back here with how i did it.
Im assuming id take a pc message to pull up a track thats saved in the rc5 then send a cc message to start the loop?

@@TheGuitarEffect no worries. So i got the es-8 and the rc-5. I managed to get the patches to change. That being said- the es-8 CANNOT make a patch play because the es8 doesnt send midi start/stop/ continue messages- which is a total bummer.
Ive asked them if i can use the control out on the es8 as a footswitch to start the loops ( u can get the boss switches and it will do start). I mean logically i dont see why not seeing as these control outs are usually used for channel switching.
@@ziadtarab86 Hey, I hope you got it sorted because this is incorrect. The ES8 can very much trigger an RC5 preset to play or stop via midi.
How much memory space is on the looper?
